I'm wanting to start making wood arrows and wondered if I should go with the 3rivers water-based sealer or go with bohning products. I understand that you have to use bohning paint and glue with the bohning lacquer. Which one is going to be the most weather-proof finish? Thanks for the input!
I have used Bohning paint for 40+ years.
Water proofing has never been a problem.
I have and still use many arrows that I crowned, crested and fletched in the early 1970's.

You will get a bunch of opinions on this. I use a water based stain from HD and then Testors paints.Follow it up with 3 coats of water based floor polyurethane mixed 1-3,1 part poly to 3 parts water. Most important part is to let everything dry at least 10-12hrs in between coats.
I use water based stains and poly urethane (several coats with steel wooling). NOTHING! That I can think of, could be more weather proof! Very very resilient too! I think weather proofing would be later on your list of concerns though, seeing you have not built arrows with wood before?! Much attention need be paid to spine, straightness, mass weigh, cut the tapers or grind them.....once you got a feel for how all that is working for ya, there are many ways to finish woodys. Wood arrows are alot of work! But 100% worth it! Thats all Ive used since I opted for traditional gear exclusively about 3 years ago now. Nothing like good old wood IMHO! Heres the last batch I cranked out for a buddy of mine. Last year I stayed with him for 3 weeks in Indiana and he commented several times on how much he liked my arrows....he shoots aluminum. So I told him Id make him some. He'll have these in a week. Just take your time when you make yours.....youl pull it off! :thumbsup:

There are advantages to both, but once dry they both serve the purpose. Bohning is more expensive for the crown dip, clear coat and cresting lacquers and highly toxic. Good ventilation is always important.
The Bohning stuff is not a water based poly and you will smell up the house or shop for days.
