Title: Another Versus Longbow Hunt...
Post by: Milk River Stickman on October 22, 2010, 03:14:00 AM
Hey everybody!

First, just want to extend a huge thank you for all the support from all the Tradgang members.  I truly appreciate it and take all of it to heart.  I have leaned on some of you for your insight based on experience and have gotten some excellent feedback to use in the future.  You know who you are, and thank you.  My goal is to promote our sport or "way" of hunting in the best light possible and have as many people on the same boat as possible.  I am starting to film another hunt for Versus t.v. show "The Buck Stops Here".  I will again be hunting with my longbow.  That last show I did with them was there number one episode of all time, thanks everyone!  A great thing for us here at Trad Gang I think.  I am looking for an open discussion for any suggestions for this hunt.  Constructive Criticism is welcome, let 'er rip.  We start filming on Sunday.  Anyone have any thoughts?  Thanks and shoot straight.

I think the first episode was fantastic!  I can't offer much in the way of ideas but I always like to hear what guys are shooting. Bow weight, arrows and broadheads for example.  The only other thing that I could think that would make it better is if I was out there with ya!  :bigsmyl:

The first one you did was their "number one episode of all time"?  Well, that wasn't just TGers making it so.  Sounds to me like people - at least the ones that watch VS - in general are interested in longbows.  That's a very good thing.

Keep up the good work!

A. How can I see the first episode?

B. I will be excited as long as I do not hear the words "shooter buck" or "just a doe".

C. Awesome job getting a film on TV using a longbow!

Just hunt bro`.

Get it on film, and let us see it. Be it a sweaty forehead, or hypothermic shivers. Missed shots, or a perfect hit.

Just don`t place the camera behind a downed animal, and act as if you are seeing it for the first time as you walk up.

Luke I have seen the first one several times, awesome footage. Do the same thing again and I will watch that one several times again as well! Maybe throw a short 1-2 minute "how-to" segment in there to breifly desribe your bow, maybe a few target shots as well?

Luke, I really enjoyed the episode.  I think it would be extremely cool if you explained why you hunt traditionally and what it means to you.
Also would be cool to see like pearl drums said above about a short how to segment and some target shooting.
Good luck and i can't wait to see the episode

I'd really like to see the episode somehow too.
Hard to find trad bow hunts on TV.
Think I have all Tred's hunts recorded.
I wish him the very best.

Ditto for me

The only criticism I have of most trad equipment shows I've seen recently (especially Tred although I do watch his show) is the way that the hosts portray the difficulty associated with this style of hunting. I fear that the uninformed public will perceive the "I have to be closer" as an indication of the equipment's lack of efficacy. When in fact the equipment is quite capable of killing deer or anything else in N.A. at long distances. It is in fact the ARCHER'S limit on accuracy that makes the shorter distances necessary for most not the equipment. The last thing we need is the general public thinking that a longbow is an unethical weapon because it is harder to kill with it or that it leads to more wounding or unrecovered deer.

This is my only caution to you, talk up the equipment's capability and benefits, but temper it with the hunter's responsibility with ANY WEAPON to only take shots he or she knows he or she can make. Too many hosts out there saying "I have to get inside of 20yds" and then fling arrows at game at 30 or 40 yds.

My two cents.

I watched the first one several times. Very good respite from the normal 'whack em and stack em'. I enjoyed seeing your clothing choices (I wear camo most of the time, but still wear plaids and subdued regular clothes). As mentioned, it would be nice to see a short tutorial for the great unwashed who don't know about trad equipment, and maybe some target/stump shooting so folks could see our equipment's accuracy when in the right hands. Thanks for putting a good and honest face on traditional bowhunting.

Thanks Luke that was a great show and such a treat to see on the show as normally I really do not even like the show that much and actually have deleted it from my DVR but your show on there was exhilirating to see and really enjoyed it.  Hope you do many more and will definitely consider watching the show again.
For suggestions, how about more trad and less compound/Rage crap.  I always get a kick out of watching Mike Hanback on his bowhunts and seeing all those broadheads in his quiver with the blades hanging out and loose, noticed him pull an arrow before, look at it and put it back to get another, just thought it was funny!
Keep it up and good luck to you and consider doing some more on your own as well.  Thanks

The first one was good...just keep it real. The shooter buck nonsense and the fist pumping is not needed. I also would like to see someone shoot a doe or a spike horn.....what most of us see or get to shot at! Good for you to do this......thanks!!

May not be a popular thing (no kills), but a brief show of your equipment, how you shoot it, how it is different and a little blurb on why you choose to use it might be of interest to those on the fence.

I agree with some above. .  no hooting and dancing when  / if you make a good shot.

Show some of the "other things" that we experience or see or hear, not just a deer coming in and a kill.

Good luck

You guys did really well last time Luke. That was a great episode.

If anything I'd go along with what others have said.  Find a way to introduce the capability of a traditional bow to the viewers.  A lot of people think you're at a disadvantage using a stickbow which isn't the case.

Again, loved the show last time!

Not alot to add, Luke, other than my perspective that you and your father are very good representatives for traditonal archery. It appears that you and Mike Hanback have a very good relationship and he seems to be very aware of the challenge involved with traditional gear.He better be careful hanging out with you and Tred!LOL. More shows like your first would be highly anticipated.I enjoyed it immensely. Let us know when it is going to air so we can get the word out, bro.

That is some great insight, everyone. Thanks for the thoughts, It sounds like everyone has similiar ideas and perspectives.  The suggestions for the "why" I shoot and showing my bow's efficiency and really ease of use is important...I had actually done that for the last show and a few Mossy Oak shows before that...unfortunately it has hit the cutting room floor.  I have even gone as far as to talk about the sacredness of our sport.  I will talk about my bow and what I use again as well, I hope it gets on the show.  Just in case you are wondering...I am shooting an older Robertson longbow, a Mystical at 64" and 64#, 145 grain STOS heads, and undecided on arrows even yet, have been shooting 700+ birch, like the heavy arrows but been tough on the recently
I will instruct the videographer no scenes from behind a downed deer, I hate that too.  I also hate the "shooter buck" and "just a doe" stuff as well, good point.  I do admit, I have done that past shows when I was just getting started doing them because that "is just what they did".  I have several doe tags and am not afraid to add some venison to the freezer during this hunt.
Oh-no stumps really where we are at, but lots of other stuff, roving in the hills maybe.  I would love to hunt a free-ranging bison, tough tag to get.  Also, a know a fella used to be able to get onto Versus.com and get the clips from that hunt...I am not sure how to do it.  If it can't be done, I'll burn a pile of DVD's from my copy for anyone that wants one.  I'll take care of that after next week perhaps if anyone is interested.

Thanks again for responding to this thread.  I am seriously taking notes to use in the field. Please keep them coming.

Luke

Luke. Not to over emphasize all this, but there is a growing number of us that are desiring the kind of stuff you are putting out. I remember seeing the first show you did with Mike Hanback. You and your dad were shooting with him at your ranch, I believe. I remember thinking at the time how awesome it would be if there were more shows like that. I have no idea what your relationship with Versus is but we have been waiting for traditional shows for quite some time. they need to know that. Their success with Tred is not just a fluke.

Luke can you get us the contact info for the right "ears" to hear how much we want to see more of this. We could start an email campaign and see if they will consider making it a separate series.

We are all viewers and consumers. I believe Versus mught have a few class acts there given they have been supportive of Tred given his condition. I know that made me think better of Versus.

Bob-I'll look into the u-tube thing...I don't do any of that, so I'll see what I can do and what I can put up legally...

Vesty and Chopx2- I agree and have been pushing for the same for years, I am just now getting to have some influence, so we'll see where that goes.  I'll see if I can't get a topic started on Hanback's website, he's probably the #1 hunting website blog on the net, it would be a great place to try...

I harvested two does and a buck this past week on film.  I used a lot of the thoughts that you all here at trad-gang suggested.  I think I'll be getting my own episode, all trad and no gimmicks, next fall with this one.  My camera man was struggling with the cold and other issues, so I hope there is enough quality footage to use for a show.  I had a lot of stuff as far as thoughts in there, we'll see.  I made two great shots on the does, one from a treestand, one from the ground.  I made a crappy shot on the buck, but made no excuses and owned up to it.  Rather lucky than good, and the buck didn't go 80 yards and tipped over...ham shot.  Sorry for that guys, but I think I made lemonade out of lemons that day and didn't try to hide anything like so many do on t.v..  I stressed it happens to all hunters, from guns, wheels, etc.  I shot him on the ground, no camo, kneeling, hunters orange.  I hope I don't dissappoint any of you.  I haven't gotten a bad shot on an animal for many years.  Anyway, I'll see if I can't get some pics posted soon if your interested.

Luke

Luke,
I also enjoyed the first episode a bunch.  Just be yourself, keep your footage "real", and enjoy what your doing.  It will be great!  I did like the request above- offer to take a couple of us guys on a hunt.... I'm willing to sacrifice some time to hunt with you!
Good luck and hope it goes well.

Congrats Luke on this season's deer(plural)!
I thought you were very well spoken (on the last episode) and really captured the spirit of trad archery.I would be interested in a copy of that episode.
My young son and I can't wait to see the new one.

Any thoughts on making a trad DVD?
Hope you are still wearing the plaid/wool!

Thanks for that, I get so irritated listening to guys claim they made perfect hits just because the animal went down quick or was recovered when they clearly missed what they were aiming at often by a lot. You are right S*** happens and sometimes we get lucky.

Thanks for all the positive remarks, guys.  It should air next October (2011)...I hate waiting that long.  I think you guys are right on with the kids stuff, that is our future and they need an alternative to "newest rage".  I am glad to get a nod on the shot I made, and you are right, no bones and no lies.  I have guided long enough to know less-than-perfect shots happen all to often.  As far as a DVD, I have plans for my own production company, but I wouldn't be able get the amount of content for up to possibly 5 years.  And yes, Tarponnut, still wearing the plaids!   www.classicbowman.com (http://www.classicbowman.com)  is some good stuff.  I did, however, have to throw on my cold weather fleece jacket one evening...it is outfitter camo!  The wind chill was killing me!  My interview lasted over an hour (for a 20 minute show) as I tried to get everything in that was suggested...we'll see what makes it.  you guys are great.

Here are some pics of my two does and buck for the show...hope this works, haven't done this in a few years.  Killed the big doe from a stand (center lungs), small doe on the ground shortly after I shot my buck (center lungs).  15 yards doe 1, 10 yards doe 2, 15 yards on the buck (pretty far from lungs).  Robertson Mystical Longbow, 64" 64#, cedar arrows, 145 grain STOS heads.

In some respects, Luke, you've opened a can of worms but in a good way.I consider you and Tred as ambassadors of our traditional heritage. Tred has proven by his courage in the face of adversity that he is the real deal. You exhibit an enthusiasm and understanding of the ethical and challenging dimension of our pursuit. The love of the hunt,so to speak, and all that goes with it.Stay humble and thankful. We all look forward to what might develope.

Here's a link to the shows. I haven't seen one yet. But looks good to me! Ordered a catalog too. Sure is nice to see a trad guy wearing plaid on T.V....wow! It was nice to hear a longbow hunter talk, even if briefly, about the importance of our heritage as bowhunters. No "fist-pumping", no high fives, just a soft word of encouragement and recognition of how great that was to kill a whitetail with a longbow. Well done.
