Just recently pulled my cedars out of the closet, and I really want to get into the woods with these things. I have 160 grain Snuffers on them now, but I think I'm a 2 blade man.
I have a "Shmorgasborg" of broadheads up for trade right now in the classifieds, and I have them up for trade for Magnus 1's 160 grain.
After using the search tool extensively, I am finding there is quite a following for STOS 2-blade.
What are your thoughts in comparing the two? Anyone try both? Thinking about changing my classifieds post to include STOS if I get some good feedback.
Thanks guys!
Matt
I shoot STOS and ABowyer Brown Bears-the BB are superior (single bevel and amazing edge) and more expensive.
Both will give you way better penetration than a Snuffer.
Both are great heads. I use both, the STOS has become my go to BH for Elk. Both are easy to sharpen. You won't go wrong with either in my opinion.
I believe you'd find the STOS more forgiving of a poor release or strong cross wind than the Magnus. Both are quality heads with excellent factory grinds, making sharpening a snap. The STOS gives up 3/8" of cutting width to the Magnus though, there are always trade offs.
I've used both and prefer the stos. The blade and tip are thicker and much stronger. I've shot them both on accident into a block wall and the stos always seems to survive the hit. The magnus has folded at the tip a few times. The stos seems a little more accurate, probably because it is narrower. Both are good heads tho but I'll stick with the stos.
I'm another STOS broadhead fan. I shoot the 145 grain with my 37# bow and shoot the 160 grain with my 42# bow.
I have used both and shot animals with both. I had better killing results with the Magnus, but shot different animals with each. Stos were easier to tune and flew great every time. I have shot both the wide and regular width Magnus and both needed a bit more tuning or arrow matching. That said I would still hunt with either head with confidence, just get them sharp.
Used the STOS on Sunday to take a nice doe. It blew right through her and stuck in the dirt. They were easy for me to sharpen, and fly great. I agree that you give up more width with the Magnus, but have no personal experience with them shooting at animals.
Both are great!
STOS is my favourite, if it helps any it is Magnus that makes the STOS from what I've heard.
STOS! very easy to get shaving sharp with the near perfect factory starter grinds. They have become my favorite over 4 other major name broadheads Ive worked with. 145 gr are my favorite flavor! PERFECT on my woodies out of my 50# recurves! Heres some pics of some on some arrows I just built as a Thank You to a friend that I stay with when I go to Indiana for a few weeks this time of year (not going this year, trips to N.Y. instead for a change) but Ill be back next year!

Both are very good heads.Lots of guys use them in a different way;on whitetail the 3 blade Snuffer is really deadly, while the Stos is prefered for bigger animals like elk and moose, expecially for those that haven't heavy poundages.
Drive a Magnus into the ground and damage the tip, and they will replace it.
Thanks guys. Lots of good info here.
Looks like the STOS is the winner in most people's books.
Great info, thank you!
I thought Mike Sohm (Magnus) also manufactured the STOS as well as the Wensel Woodsman broadheads. In that case, the quality should be similar - just different designs.
I would use the STOS
STOS are made by Magnus so you are really getting a variety of the same thing. The STOS has a different geometry than the other Magnus heads but the quality is the same.
Just to clarify I'm in no way associated with the broadhead company. They're just my favorite head. I wish I was but I'm not. They all work as long as they're razor sharp and put in the right place.
Keeping the Faith!
Magnus
I use the STOS for bigger game, and Magnus for deer. Both are excellent. STOS is brutally tough.
I have shot both and prefer STOS.
I use different broadheads on different animals for reasons I believe in.
I killed my biggest moose with a 160 gr. Magnus two blade but I have killed my last two moose with 160gr. Stos broadheads. You never have too much penetrating power when you hunt moose and I also find Stos a little easier to sharpen, as well as taking up less room in my quiver top.
Like most of you, I like experimenting and if I can find cedars that are stiff enough for my draw length and weight I may try heavier Abowyers next year for moose.
For black bears my favorite head is the 160 gr. Snuffer.
For the other two animals I usually hunt, caribou and deer, broadhead choice is still important but less critical so I may use any of the above as well as Magnus with bleeder blades.
I love the stos , found them easier to sharpen and tune and the design is awesome the tip will not bent as the Magnus has bended for me before
Both are excellent heads... that being said, I shoot Magnus 1's myself. I like wide 2-blades.
Couple of years ago I had 4 shots at 4 critters with 4 hits (one was a spine shot with a quick follow up into the lungs), with a total tracking job of 105 yards.

One 11 point buck and two does in Texas (Solana), 12 to 28 yards perfect flight to their mark.
Heads sharpen easily, and do massive damage when they get there. Three of the arrows were sticking in the ground and the 4th (28 yards) was to the fletchings about 2" above the heart. Ribs, spine, and off shoulders hit. They were shot out of that Shawnee, 60# @ 29".
STOS broadhead doesn't come in screw-in. Anybody use the STOS with the Magnus 11/32" screw-in adapter, the long adapter? How well does it fit and align for you? Thanks.

I've used both short and long. They work better than non magnus for me. Magnus adapters seem to be just a tad wider and most of the time, but not always, you don't have to play around on a spin tester to get em straight, just push them in tight all the way, spin a little, let er harden and you're good to go.
Magnus or stos but i like the old Bear Green heads as well
I personally shhot the ventilated Magnus and they fly like DARTS! My go-to head this year. Both are great.....
Is the STOS single or double bevel?

I use the the Magnus 11/32" long broadhead adapter with my 160 grain STOS broadheads. They fit fine and work for me.
I have had a great deal of luck with the STOS heads they are easy to get scary sharp and fly very well.
The STOS is double bevel.I have only mounted them on steel adapters but found that the ferrule is very true and all I mounted spun perfectly without tweaking. They also come with an excellent tanto tip and are less apt to bend or tip curl.
I like'em both ;0
JimB where are you from in MT?
Jason
I've been using STOS for about 7 years and am very pleased with them. Jim
