What an evening........
The wind was kinda of crazy this evening and I almost didn't even go to the woods.
But by 3:30 I was in a stand about 1/4 mile behind my house in a holler which used to be a cow pasture about 15 years ago. The same stand where I killed my avatar buck last November to be exact.
The wind would blow from the northwest then the west than the southwest and was wipping along pretty good.
This spot works well on any of those winds but I didn't figure the deer would be moving much in it.
About 30 minutes before dark a doe and button buck walked by about 30 yards away in a thicket going from north to south. They browsed there way along clueless to me being there. Cool I thought maybe this will work tonight.
Five minutes later I hear another deer walking the same trail the first two had. I was actually expecting it to be another yearling lagging behind and was suprised when I saw white antlers come into view. It was a good buck, 22-23 inches wide with great mass. ten points but didn't have exceptionaly long tines his G2's and 3's were probably around the 8 to 9 inch range. Huge bodied deer though and a definately one I was interested in shooting!
He worked his way the same direction the other deer had and s
Not ughhhh..... if ya saw a buck like that.
Wow it only posted half!!!!!!!!! ok let me try again.
He worked his way the same direction the other two had and about 30 yards away from me he makes a scrape. Then begins working a rub beside the scrape.
When he paused in his rubbing i wheezed at him with my mouth. I could see him in a small hole in the thicket and watched him bristle up raise his tail straight up and stare at me.
He ended up walking a few yards north and rubbing another tree. when he stopped I couldn't resist I wheezed agian.
He bristled again and begin circling to my north and east trying to catch a scent of the other buck (me)!
He made a miscalculation though and circled short putting hime 23 yards or so broadside and upwind from me!
I came to full draw and burned a hole in the sweet spot. When i released i saw my arrow go over him as he ducked.
The arrow had a lighted nock on it.and it was glowing like a camp fire. he bounded about ten yards north and stopped and stared at that nock and snorted about 20 times.....
Then circled the nock to the north west and snorted at it some more.
Finaly he walked back down the holler the way he had come. I don't think he was really spooked just confused as to what that green thing was!
Anyway it was a good evening and pretty exciteing. I'm sure he will be back but i am gonna give that woods a rest until Sunday to let things settle down.
Sounds like a good evening. Keep after him Dennis. I haven't saw one yet. Don't understand what's going on there, but it's early. Hap
Been slow here to Hap until the last two days. This was the best buck I have seen since season started though!
good luck adeeden. I havent seen any good bucks yet this year. Only saw a couple last year. I was hoping that it was due to the crops being in so late (DEC)
You had a great evening and one that won't be shared by many of us all season long.
Just why I love hunting. As exciting a story as could be told.
Keep at it and keep us posted on your hunt!
Thank you for sharing!
I love close encounters. Do you think it was the lighted knock that spooked him?
God Bless,
Nathan
Good luck with him.
I slipped back in there this morning even though I said I was going to let that area rest.....I coundn't resist the wind was perfect.
I saw him again this morning from about 40 yards away heading up to the bedding area. I will not hunt this spot again until Sunday though and only then if the wind is good.
I did snap a picture of one of the rubs he made last night though!

Exactly ten days later and i hunted the same stand tonight. He's back! H followed a lone doe through at about 40 yards.
I hit him with the grunt and he stopped and stared but wasn't leaving his doe. he put his head back on the ground and followed along behind her as she made her way down the creek bank.
I'm gonna relocate that stand about 20 yards and be patient!
Good luck to you sir!
Sounds like a plan to me. Go get him. Hap
Good luck, you got a plan there!!
