I have always been a long bow guy, but aquired a Robertson Fatal Styk, sweet bow! I just got it today and have shot it alot already. My question is are all recurves "loud"? It has a buzz after every shot. My arrows are around 9.5 gr per pound and I messed with the brace ht both ways, no luck. Am I missing the obvious or have long bows spoiled me over the years? Thanks all
They're definitely louder. You don't want it buzzing, though. A change in strings, some pads under the limb tips (where the string hits the limbs), and some silencers on the string should quiet it down.
If that's not enough, the surest way is to shoot a heavier arrow.
It has Musk Ox silencers on it already. I will try the pad under the string and have a listen. Heavier arrows wont be too bad either, that sucker has power to spare....wow...if it weren't for the buzzing it wouldnt have any noticable noise.
looper is right, then again a recurve is easier for me to shoot.
But I like a recurve..
Recurve are usally louder then a longbow.I like to use Bow Hush and Hush puppies on recurves I've had.I had them on a BW recurve and I would get comments on how quiet it was.And I find that different type of FF type strings can sound different.I have bows that are quieter with 450+ then with D97,and some are quieter with 8125.
yes, the heavier arrows would be a big help. Also try 4 silencers on the string, 2 on top and 2 on the bottom.
The string is FF, but I cant tell you the material. Its not a skinny string.
Put some limbsavers on the limbs per instructions on the package and I would bet your problem with the buzzing will be solved. Your longbows will still be quieter.
I've always had "issues" with my Widow recurves and noise. I just recently tried a 450+ skinny string on my PCH and am amazed at how much quieter it is.
I own several of Dick's recurves and they are great bows and very quiet to me.maybe you have a too stiff arrow, this is a kind of problem that arise when a too stiff arrow hits the side window.Otherwise you can try those skinny string that really make the difference.
Probably need to adjust your brace height a bit.
Sounds like I need a skinny string first. Thanks for the input all!
Yup, if its the original string its probably a fat one. They put like 18 strand FF on their bows for some reason.

Thats the ticket
Sure, most recurves can be tamed considerably. Most likely not as quiet as your LB. If you put in as much effort in quietng your LB, then your curve will remain noticeably louder.
Sixby may be right on the money. I'd try shortening the string a bit first b4 buying a new string.
Try shooting the Astro Flight string and using a wooden arrow... that will quiet it down :)
If you have antler burr knobs on it they may be the problem. Had a bow that developed a buzz and discovered the burr was loose on the screw. Epoxy had come loose. Pulled the burr off and re-epoxied it noise went away. I have a Fatel styk also and no buzz.
good luck let us know what fixes it
I tried woodys already, no luck. I ended up adding 100 grain tubes to the arrows I am using, it gave me 610 grains total. Thats heavy enough for me. It didnt make much difference so I am going to try a few of the suggestions I read here, string first. Thanks eveybody!
Nephew bought a real nice Predator recurve, and it was loud we did string silencers, strings and checked for anything loose, brace height etc! Added limbsavers and that seemed to quiet the bow the most!
Well I got her as quiet, or more quiet than some of my past long bows. I padded my loops with yarn, took those blasted fur silencers off and installed cat whiskers. PRESTO! She is dead silent and feels 10x better than before. I cant lie, the noise and vibration really shot my confidence in the booty, not anymore! Thanks for all the tips everybody!
No, they are not *always* louder....one of the quietest bows I never heard was a recurve with BowHush and Hush Puppies with a Dacron String....it was selfbow quiet.
That is why I developed BowHush....to make recurves quiet as longbows.
Glad to hear you got her calmed down, that is one sweet bow, with a lot of horse power.
what kind of fletching do you have on ya arra's?
I have the same bow, it will never be as quiet as a longbow, but it's pretty darned quiet. I shoot arrows that weigh 12 gr. per lb. of bow weight. Bow is 51# at my draw, arrows are 605 gr., I have a 9 strand D-10 string with cat wiskers, braced at 71/2 ". Works well for me. R.W.
I use 5.5" fletching, my arrows are 32" long so I like the extra help from long fletching. R.W. my arrows are 605 grains and my bow pulls about 53-54# at my draw, 7 1/2 brace as well. Im VERY happy right now. That Next miss is going to feel better! HAHAHAHA!
Get those silencers off and put on cat wiskers - good article in the last TBM about it. I know the look is the look but they don't work very well.
Flemish twist padded loop string. My favorite for my weights are a 8 strand padded to 16 in the loops. I am also on the string leeches.
Brace height is also more of a factor with sound on a recurve over a long bow. There will be a distance that is much quieter than others on most recurves.
Arrow weight is also more critical. Lighter weight arrows are louder than heavier shafts.
I see you got her quiet. I am another proponent of low strand strings. I have a BW Compact Hunter that was just plain loud. Put an 8 strand, padded loop D10 from SBD and it is quiet. I even used the spider silencers from Widow, that I don't think are the best but look pretty dang cool, and it is like night and day.
My Whisperstik is very quiet with muskrat silencers on it. I have seen some loud some quiet, guess it all depends on the bow and arrow combo as well.

Bow Hush and Hush Puppies are the answer. Had'um on my BW before I sold it. Dead quiet. I'm mostly a longbow shooter now, but big believer in Terry's products. Besides that, the girls need the money for their education. Good luck.
The fur silencers are cool no matter the species. But if a bow needs quieting down, they dont work for me. I use them on long bows because they usually dont need help, but they look nice with fur. The difference between my 497 gr and 605 gr arrows isnt very noticeable now, but I still like those heavy sucka's!
