Three does had just cruised through barely out of range and as I watched them feed their way up the hill, I had full intentions of slipping one of the old gals a broadhead if given the chance, but it wasn't in the cards for tonights sit. I was later lulled into a trance by the cool breeze and the constant skittering back and forth by countless grey and fox squirrels. I don't know how long I had heard it, but finally the heavy foot falls of a deer in the bone dry leaves snapped me out of my squirrel induced coma! I slowly looked to my left and saw a long tine and some main beam. Enough to know he was a mature buck. He had a partner with him, but other than the fact that he had antlers, I really couldn't tell much about him. Buck number 1 was standing behind some briars on the hillside above about 20 yards away. For a brief moment, I thought about waiting to see what kind of deer buck number 2 was, but as I glanced back towards the first buck, he was making his way up a trail, quartering away. I really don't recall the draw, anchor or release, but I vividly saw the bright colored fletching just before the arrow buried itself into the buck's rib cage. An instant crimson smear appeared on his side and all hell broke loose. No mule kick, no jump, just instant power and speed as he fled the scene, tearing up the woods as he went. I could hear the distinct metallic clank of the XX75 deep in his side. Within a few seconds, all was quiet except for the piercing of a squirrel chattering and barking his head off in the direction the back made his last sprint. After the shakes wore off, a buddy and I took up the track. It was solid, but nothing to write home about. We lost blood a short way into the trail, but quickly found his escape route and 150 yards later, I was able to put my hands on him! I thanked my friend for allowing me to hunt on his place and whispered a prayer to the Man upstairs and then pinched myself to see if it was real...the pinch still hurts!

Great buck!! Congrats! :clapper:

This might work for you. That can't be an Indiana deer. My guess is it walked over from IL or MI. Maybe OH or KY. That happens sometimes. We have nothing but fawns and four points here in Hoosier land. It's cause we have such a long gun hunt right in the middle of the rut. (http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc13/woodys-photos/2010%20Archery%20Buck/IMG_1138.jpg)

Now that is a buck!!! and one fine story told that makes us able to relive the thrill with you! Thanks for the awesome pics!! Can you tell us about your bow and set up?
Thanks guys for all the kind words...it really has been humbling. But in all honesty, I was blessed to be on the right spot at the right time. I have a great friend who lets me hunt his 80 acres with him. We have spent a lot of time together in the woods and on some different hunting trips, but I'm always cautious not to "wear out my welcome" on his place. I hunt it maybe 3 times a year and on this particular evening, it was the first time I had been out on his place for the season. I left my stand in from last year and had already checked it to make sure it was safe and sound. We knew there had been some good deer around by his trail cameras, but he hadn't seen a buck on the place in over 3 weeks. My stand is in a cherry tree on a steep hillside loaded with briars, osage trees, cedars, and walnuts...just some real nasty thickness. Trails criss cross the whole place. My buddy had been hunting the opposite side of the farm where there are more mature, open hardwoods and not had much luck, so I thought, maybe, just maybe the buck were in the nasty stuff on my side. As luck would have it, they were or at least two of the them were. Cool thing is my buddy has video of this guy sparring with another buck last year and a couple trail cam pics from last year. Same antler configuration, but a lot more horn this year. We didn't have a good tape, but an old metal tape measure showed the left beam to be a little over 24", the left G2 was over 12" and the G3 was over 9". Those are the only numbers I know at this point. As for my setup, I was using my son's Samick Sage takedown, 45#, 2216 XX75 camohunters and some seriously old school Bear Razorheads that I had bought at an auction about 7 years ago. These were the old ones that are sort of an olive drab color in the middle of the head. They sharpened up to a razor edge. I am lucky that the buck came in pretty quick because I know I'd have came un-glued if I had too much time to think about the shot. Anyone who has seen me shoot 3D knows I'm less than average shooting foam, but if I get some meat in front of me at 15 yards or less, I can usually get it done. Thanks again guys and I hope everyone has a great and safe hunting season. Now to get my son back out to get a deer!
Congrats Woody! Great buck....
