Well it's here, Joe and I will be heading out shortly. Good luck to all have fun and shoot straight and most of all be safe.
Just got up, will shower and head out, shoot straight. Blessings, Gerald
I decided to give the arthritis a rest, take the morning off, and what do you know, it stopped raining at six here in Syracuse. Already second guessing myself and I havent even started hunting. Get out there and enjoy guys.
Best of luck.
Good luck guys, looking forward to the stories......
David
Same to you bud.
just came in for lunch, the neighbors decided today was the perfect day to ride four wheelers, so I don't think I have much of a chance today.
God speed boys!! Joe
I couldn't hit a bull in the butt with a snow shovel today :help:
So.......is there a story to be told M.Knife???
I ment Mr. Knife!!
Well I had two different bucks within 5 yards of my stand today but no shots on them. It's the does that are giving me fits, I need to let them walk out a bit farther my stands are still too high and the angles are steep.
At least your seeing deer.........
Oh Jim stop it. I've seen you nail bunnies at 20 yrds. Those women folk are shaken you.Just pick a spot.In the morning.I'm sure you will do it. Settle down it's just a big bunny..Big white tail. It's all the same..
Keep after 'em Jim!Only deer I had in range tonight was a button buck.Got winded by a doe and fawn and saw afox just before dark. Was good to get out.Good luck everybody!
Hey Jeff good to see you are still around.
Good luck guys!
Had a small buck walk by my hide this afternoon. I hadn't been sitting down for more then 10 mins and here he comes.
Wish it was a doe.
Real windy this afternoon. One of those nights where you can't hear one coming and everything is moving. It's tiring hunting in those conditions. You're always on alert, every movement is a deer coming.
I like half sleeping, waiting for the crunch of leaves much better.
Kieth,
Glad you were able to make it out. Hope you had a good weekend. I hunted with en today, North and saw a owl land in a tree close by. That was pretty neat. No deer or Bear sightings to speak of!
First time out tonight. Sat in my climber in a funnel made by two ponds. Had a spike come in right before dark....5 yards, and I even had a solid anchor and a spot picked. Eased down and let him enjoy his acorns.
Had about ten hen turkeys behind me at 35 yards too. It was a great first sit after the year I have had.
Good luck out there guys.
I'm setting up in the DB early this afternoon. I saw 13 deer on Sat. one yesterday morning Joe shot that with his compound his first deer ever. All I saw was fox this morning so I'm camping out in my blind for the rest of the day.
Went out around 1 PM, sat behind a root ball on a blowdown for 3 1/2 hours. Saw a few squirrels but not much else. Wind began to swirl so I thought I should get out of there before the spot got made. Walking out I saw a deers back so I froze and just waited. It was a nice big doe and her fawn. I watched them feed for a few minutes and realized that the skipper was going to offer me a shot. I slid an arrow out of the quiver and got ready. At about 18 yards she turned and showed her backside and fed away. I started to stalk them to get a shot. Then caught movement to my left ....it was 4 more does. Stalked and watched them for 25 minutes but no shots were offered. For someone who sees 3-4 deer a year it was a great afternoon. Maybe next time! :campfire:
Ron "the deer magnet" Waldron..... and a new hero is born!!!!
Ronny!!!!! :bigsmyl: WOOHOOO!!!!! when ya taking me huntin? ;) :wavey:
Jamie good first hunt!
Congrats Joe on your first deer even though the equipment was unmentionable ;) ;) :archer:
I was sitting in my ground blind reading my Bible when I looked up I saw a deer at around 80 yards. About a half hour later i see two bucks working my way. The one came into about 25 yards and didn't like the looks of the blind even though I had it brushed in good, he started foot stomping and walking away stiff legged. The other one angled into 15 yards I was ready to draw on him but they bolted, oh well at least I had some action.
Had a momma and her 2 little ones at 15 yards on Saturday morning and let them walk. Couldn't go Sat. evening or Sun. Went this morning and didn't have any luck. Went this evening and had two yearlings at 10 yards. Let them walk and then thought they would sure be good eating. Saw them again, but never offered a shot. Pulled in my driveway and on the edge of my yard was our local piebald doe and 3 other deer. There are actually 4 piebald in the area.
Terry, you have more than just rabbits in the yard? I just had a thought  :dunno:
Charlie, I think you may be right. My treestands may be too far from the house!
My son,Tyler, was sitting tonight when 2 does and a fawn came up the trail and busted him at 15 yds.He said his heart was pounding and that he's "hooked".He'll be back in the woods tomorrow after school in another spot...trying to get his 1st.
Jeff, That's great! With the way he shot at the Muzzy, Its the deer's hearts that should be pumping. They have every right to be nervous. I'll be pulling for Tyler to get one.
Terry, either too far from the house or too far from work? whichever allows you the most time to play.
That apple tree stand looks like a nice place to sit and reflect.
Yeah Charlie,I'd love to see him get one...gotta few good bucks running around too. He's got spots on rub/scrape lines for different winds.Good luck this season!
Im sure if given the chance Tyler will do well. Tell him to focus, and no thinking about the "no no" spot....isn't that what messed him up at the muzzy? :D
Had a fun hunt with Mikey yesterday afternoon. Heard a few deer but never saw them. Did see a huge grouse though.
Gonna be a few days before im out there again. Good luck to all of you.
If Tyler gets a chance he will connect, that young man can shoot, he shot the pants off us guy's at the Muzzy.
Yeah Jamie, the "no no" spot is definitely not the spot he should focus on. :nono:He just had a laugh reading this stuff. :biglaugh:
Saw a nice fat lil buck this AM, no shot offered but he was neat watched him for 20-25 min. Had a goofey rack maybe a 5 pt.
My brother & I got out Monday AM on some public land we hunt. We covered over 2 miles and saw almost zero deer sign. One small rub and a couple piles of droppings. You would never go back if it was your first time scouting the area. We went to a farm we hunt for the evening. My brother saw 4 separate deer all does and everone of them busted him. He's a wheelie guy anyways (ha-ha). I was wanting to hunt just off a little pond but when just about to my spot a coyote jumped out of there. I left and moved a couple hundred yards. Well, 10" before dark a big doe & fawn step out where I was going to hunt. I stalked them but very loud on the leaves but they could not see or wind me. I was about 50 yds away when mama wanted to find out what was making the noise. She came prancing in facing me directly at about 15yds. She bolted and I blatted. She stopped and so did the fawn. They were about 40yrs broadside. To far for me. They never did figure out what I was.
Good luck to all.
Quoteand no thinking about the "no no" spot....isn't that what messed him up at the muzzy?
I went out after work got setup then it started to pour, rained so hard I left. I didn't want to end up just loosing one. I have a four day weekend :bigsmyl:
Saw 8 last night and had a giant doe at 30 yards in the wide open. Just out of my comfort zone though. I whapped a coyote at about 35 yards recently but respect a deer more than that. So close! They seemed to be moving well before the front came in. I'll give it another try in the AM.
I jumped ship I'm back to the Titan.
Haven't seen a deer in four sits :banghead: Going to the other side of the woods tonight about a half mile from were I have been. Checked out the stand this morning and there was fresh sign.
7 does between 15 and 25 yards at first light. An 8th deer forty minutew later at 45 yards. Too thick to see what it was or went.
Wish I could shoot does on this property...hunting til ten or so.
Going after work at 3:00. Suburban hunting but it will have to suffice. Pulled a nice 8 out of the road where it died yesterday after he was shot when he was following a doe.The rut is in the air if only a bit.
Ended up seeing 13 today. Im sure 3 or 4 were duplicates though. All does or yearlings, the one I saw alone in the brush was probably a buck, but I couldn't tell.
Wind kept flipping on me all morning. Steady out of the west, then a few minutes worth of due east. Hate when that happens.
Heard some turkeys too, but never saw them.
I will be out there tomorrow am. Good luck guys.
saw one this morning but she had me pegged AGAIN, finally took that stand down as it is out in the open and replaced it with another better hidden.
I think she smelled the Stewart's coffee on your breath..... :biglaugh:
I had a doe feeding at 40 yards then two small bucks were fighting it was pretty cool to watch. Joe shot the spike with his compound. looks like I solo now he's tagged out.
Good for him......I have never tagged out on anything. Joe did good  :notworthy:
Hey Jim,that's great!Tell Joe that "T" and I said congrats
Congrats to Joe.
I didn't make it out today. One of those alarm clock malfunctions...
:clapper: Great Job Joe!
YEAH BABY!!!!! Joes new name is KILLER!!!!!!!!
Thanks guy's, I went out this morning and saw squat, it's pretty hot here but I'll give the pm a try. Tomorrow I'm setting traps so I'll be hunting the pm only after that.
Jim , Tell Joe congrats for me and hang in there you will get it done I'm sure of it . Drew
Congrats Joe and Jim, you fellas got some vittles. Finally saw a couple tonight.Got outa work at 3 and was in the woods by 3:30 Saw a nice one following a little doe. This was a suburban hunt less than a mile from my house and although I dont get into that woodlot often I think I got em figured out (yeah right). At least 5 fresh scrapes on the ridge.
Why is Joe tagged out?? He has the either or tag and he can use his other tag during bow season, he does not have to wait for gun. Shawn
QuoteWhy is Joe tagged out?? He has the either or tag and he can use his other tag during bow season, he does not have to wait for gun. Shawn
Because he needs to leave one for the old man
Good for for you Joe. Nothing wrong with a youngster wanting to extend his season.
Jim, bet you are a proud father. A proud father who needs another freezer :bigsmyl:
You got that right Charlie, well i put out a few traps this morning now I'm going to play in the rain with my bow :bigsmyl:
Just got back a little while ago, didn't see any deer this afternoon, did see a woodcock and a rabbit. Really pretty quiet in the woods.
No deer this after noon, I have 46 hours in my stands so far but the best is yet to come.
Don't feel bad bud, like I already told you, I haven't even put tension to string yet!! You are right though, the best is yet to come!!
Did see my first buck running the hell out of a doe yesterday though. Mark it on your calendars boys!! :readit: :archer:
Nathan
Just got out of mediation. Tweaking a fed application, and hoping to get a couple of hours in the woods to decompress.
Got out yesterday morning and saw a something chasing a something behind my treestand but they never came out of the brush. I didnt hear any grunting but it sure enough looked like a buck chasing a small doe. I saw a real nice 120 or so buck feeding with a doe in the middle of town today while I was jogging at 1:00 pm.Man he was something. Now if I could get one like that broadside under my tree.
My hunt was cut short at 4 with a text saying my son needed me. Rushed out of the woods, called to say I was on my way and got "oh he is fine now". Let the games begin...
All the scrapes and rubs look like they havent been touched. Think the weather has something to do with that. Probably wont go out again until it gets a bit cooler.
Ouch!!!!! Jamie you gotta at least turn those contraptions off when your hunting. I leave mine in the truck or turned off in my cargo pocket. Im still fighting texting, Ill probably get beat into it when my sons get phones at like 18 years old if I can help it but until then uh uh! I hope to get out for a quick couple of hours after work tomorrow. Ive already been hunting a lot more than last year.My minute is coming and it better come soon, Im hungering for some fresh backstraps.
Do you fellas think this years rut is coming early? I remember way back when when I was hunting with my dad we saw an 8 poiter chase a doe across the road on opening day, cant remember the date but it should have been close to 10/15. Thats the earliest rutting activity I can remember but it seems like we got another early rut.
Izzy,
It seems as if everything is early this year. Even Striped bassw ere being caught Early this spring. Carp spawned early, and Oaks were dropping early. I think the rut is more or less here. At leats you will start seeing rut like activity.
Jamie, there's nothing wrong with being responsible. I know it sucks when people play games but you will never regret being there for your kids.
Going out in the afternoon on Wed.,going to sit till late and see what's happening. Hope the cold front starts and gets the critters moving. Been out over 45 hours so far......hope'n for a good afternoon!!
Good luck Ron. I wish everyone well. Looking forward to making it up north again soon.
Ive been having some SUPER experiences since the southern season opened. Ive been IN the deer every day Ive gone out. Been putting in about two hours before work and and again when I get home each day during the week and even more on the weekends. Unfortunately Im working the next two weekends, and tomorrow Im booked for a 18 hour shift.
Anyways, Ive been hunting totally from the ground right outside my doorstep (50 acres), and have been either busted or been just outta range each time Ive gone out. Every experience has been under 40 yards so far. Im feeling really good about this season, and how my still hunting/stalking has developed. Yesterday I was 4 yards from a nice doe coming right at me while I was resting on a log. I didn't feel comfortable with a frontal shot, so I just waited to see how close she was going to get before noticing me. WHAT A RUSH!!! I thought she could hear my heart beat. I just gotta wait for the right shot.
I was about to buy a new treestand, but I'm having too much fun still hunting. Im just worried that the season is going to pass me buy before I get a shot off.
Ken M, I'll have a package in the mail for you shortly.
Casey
Hakuna Mattada. Good luck out there guys.
Went out yesterday & saw nothing. This evening I wish I had the same luck. Had a buck walk in 10 yards turned broadside and took the shot. Hit him high and last time I saw him he was going into a big swamp with my arrow protruding from both sides of his chest. So unhappy with myself for hitting him high. No blood or arrow was found by me or my brother. Going in the morning with a friend to look some more. I am hoping I got enough of the tops of his lungs to put him down or not enough to hurt him bad enough. He had been chasing a doe earlier when I first saw him. No sleep for me.
Good luck Dan. I haven't laid eyes on a deer since Sat.
Good luck on that trail Dan. Jamie, hope you get some peaceful time out there.Ron, I hope you call me for a drag soon.
Daniel,
Please let us know how you make out. Good Luck!
I spent 4 hours in the stand this morning and seen 7 deer in my back field. Four of them where bucks. One had a nice rack on him. All to far to shoot at. This is the most activity I've seen yet. I think the bucks are on the move now. I'm going to have some lunch and head back out. Good luck guys.
Good luck out there. Well, I have lost my first trad buck. Poured there last night so much the dog could not even find a starting point. We grid searched the swamp for a few hours with no luck. Never even found a piece of the arrow or blood. I can testify how cold the water in upstate NY is. Es & I were both up to our armpits at times. Hurts but I understand it is part of it. Just hoped it would bot happen to me. Thanks guys.
Have a couple days off going to spend it in my treestand.Hope I can keep it together nexttime though.Goodluck to all tradgangers...................
Sat in a tree stand for 4 hours this afternoon, just saw a squirrel or two and some birds, chickadees and blue jays. Really warm, I guess the cold front is taking longer than the weather man thought.
Sat all afternoon only saw turkeys. I'm not sure where the deer went. I'm back out in the morning.
I was in my ground blind this afternoon I had a decent buck in range but he was nervous and in some cover so I passed the shot.
Heading out Friday morning for 9 days in the woods. Can't wait to get out and away.
I'll be camping and hunting on state land, Burnt Hills State Forest in Schoharie County, 10K acres.

If anyone has some time available and wants to hunt, your welcome to stop by. There's room for more.
Here's where I'll have my camp set up. You can Google: Line Road, Summit NY 12175 and get directions to the intersection in Emenince. I'll be set up where CAMP is written in red.

That's cool No sage....best of luck my friend!
I hunted that area for many years, maybe I'll take a ride next week!!!
maybe i'll ride with Ron, Charlie????
I have next week off. Perhaps a day or two are in order.
Good luck Keith.
I'm trying something new to me. I sit on an edge of a large field. on one of the couple of travel routes on to the field. yesterday I seen 7 deer in the field but none by me. I set up a deer decoy. Last night I had 19 turkeys enter on the other side of the field and headed right for it. I'm hoping it will work on the deer as well. Anybody ever try this. tips and advice needed. gotta get out there. good luck!
By the way I missed on the tukeys. Fast little buggers. lol
Ive been using a 2D doe head decoy this season but everytime out with it I havent seen deer.
Real nice camp Keith, Im glad your feeling better. You know the Little Bull Rider claims to have taken a few good un's from that area.
I've seen pics Izzy...... if Scott says he's gotten some good un's.... I beleive him.
Im gonna give it a go of sneaking out there for a day hunt with you. Thanks for the offer.
Good luck Keith! Looks like a nice camp. You should be hitting it just right. I love this time of year. My favorite time to hunt is Nov.1-12. The bucks are looking for love and cruising. The does aren't quite ready so the bucks really move. Once the does get ready the bucks stick with one and don't move as much.
I'm getting ready to head out this afternoon and get back in the saddle. I think I'm done sulking now.
Got stuck with some appointments today so I never made it out.2 deer got hit by cars during my shift alone, always a sign that the boys are getting anxious.Illl be out tomorrow, leaving work early.
Saw two when I pulled into the driveway of the farm I was hunting and that was it. Nothing else moving. The wind really kicked up. Our very own bunny hunt host appears to have made some meat tonight. I'm sure he will chime in with his story after he gets it taken care of.
Cool Guys! The wind was pretty strong today.
Shawn, Cant wait for a story!
Well, it was a beautiful day to be in the woods. I put up a new stand(#57)about a week before our opener. It overlooks an old orchard and I need a west wind to hunt it,wsw is ok but dead west is perfect. I sat it last Thursday and past a small buck and had a nice 110" 8pt. at 30 but that is too far for me on some days. I let him walk. Well this afternoon I decided to shoot the first buck thru as Iam due for some surgery and wanted some meat before this may happen. I, as some of ya know am hunting with an old friend. A 7 Lakes that I once owned and was returned to me by Bob Brown(WapatiChaser). I got home after work and did my usual scent free routine and made it to the tree by 4:10. I climbed up and was settled in by 4:15, and my first text message came from Terry at around 4:30 I think. I had 6 does come in a short time later but wanted a buck. At 5:40 I did my usual series of doe bleats followed by 3 grunts and wait 15 seconds and 3 more grunts. I no sooner tucked my grunt call away and here he comes. He was roughly 25 yards and walking, I drew and bleated to stop him and let it fly. The hitlooked good but forward, right smack dab in center of shoulder. I saw the arrow bounce out some and snap off as he ran off. I did not wait long and got down and checked my arrow and marked blood 10 yards from from arrow, I always only go this far if I don't see them fall, it gives me a line to start the blood trailing if no more blood right away. I called Meathead one of my buds(he comes to bunny hunt)and told him meet me at the house, I do not think he went far. Long story short we found him within 50 yards and it was a nice walk along blood trail. I was shooting 125 grain Snuffers screwed into 50 grain brass insert and Heritage 150's out of the 58# 7 Lakes. The arrow went thru both shoulders and hit the off leg and bounced back out and the deer snapped it as he ran. He is a 4pt and will eat great, now only big bucks from here on out. You guys know I don't do many pics.but will email one to someone if they will post it for me, no hero shots for me. This one is special due to getting the 7 Lakes back after many years!! This is the 3rd. deer I killed with it. The last 4 or 5 years ago at least. Shawn
Awesome bro!!! Was he looking for ladies or on the feed?
Way to go Shawn!!
David
Congrats Shawn
Nice going Shawn
Good job Shawn
Shawn, Glad to her she made meat for ya ! I'm off starting now until Nov 8th. The rut has started !! I will be in a stand in 15 min ! Good luck to eveyone.
Happy For Ya Shawn!
... mike ..
CONGRATULATIONS Brother!!!!!!!!!! :archer: :clapper:
Congratulations Shawn - don't you have to wait until the regular season for a 2nd buck?
just went on vacation today!!!! need to spend some time helping my mother but will definitly get some quality hours in the woods now!
Good luck Ken
I started Vacation Today as well. Not as long as Ken's Vaca but I will be hitting the woods as well. Cant wait.
No I don't have to wai as I hunt a bow only area and earn a buck tag by shooting a doe. I can kill up to 4 bucks a year this way. Izzy he was coming out of bedding but also he was just starting up. His tarsals were just strarting to darken and he smelled a lil' rutty but another week and they will be chasing good. The real heavy breeding will be around the 15th. this year in my area, but now is the time to out there for the next 3 to 3 and a half weeks. This new stand is the best I have put up in a few years. In and out is a breeze. Izzy if ya can get away next week during the week and we have a solid west wind call me, I will PM ya my #. I will put ya in there. One real good one in there and another 6pt. Plus a good doe group. Call mefor sure!! Thanks everyone!! Shawn
This is for SteveB as well, I also can use my regular season tag to take a buck in the bow only area anytime during the season as in a bow only area the seaon is considered regular season, DEC website says this is good in westchester county as well as all bow only areas in the state. From website: Regular season tag may be used anytime in areas restricted to longbow use only. Shawn
I start vacation the 5th. to the 22nd!! OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn
I was checking traps at 4:30 this morning and saw a nice heavy beamed buck not far from my stand :bigsmyl: I was undecided on were to go this morning kinda bummed at the lack of deer sightings, now i have some renewed interest
I got him, I'll start a new thread later.
Congrats Jim!
YEAHHHHHHHHHHH JIM!!!!! thats where Joe gets it from!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Way to go Jim!Looking forward to hearing details.Had a good 8pt at 15yds this morning, but had no shot, and then a forky came through an hour later.Things are heating up in the woods. :archer:
Im hoping to get my butt out of bed and hunt the am tomorrow. A lot of activity in the woods, just no time to get out there. Only been out three times! :banghead:
Had a 4 hour sit this afternoon with Adk-Ken ,just tree critters until the walk out at dark. Saw 2 on the way back to the car. Maybe we should just sit in the car and listen to the radio.........
Saw a spike and a doe plus something that was chasing the doe. it was another deer but noit sure what. It caught my scent and boogied. I hate swirling winds. I was unfamiliar with the spot but I had a good sit. Nothing in range.
Way 2 go Stone!
Sat for 3 1/2 hours this AM, nothing move'n, real windy , even the tree critters were sleep'n in. Not seeing much buck'n sign. I know there is a good one around but he's not active yet!!
Need to get back put there ron. Somethings blowin in.
I have been seeing a lot of chasing...at work. :banghead: I saw three different bucks chasing different groups of does yesterday while on my patrol. Scrapes and rubs are taking a pounding.
got out of work at 11 last night, and back in already. I am going to try to get out this afternoon. I have a core area that is perfect for a N-NW wind, and im going "Mikey style". Low and slow. :goldtooth:
1st day on vacation and i'm SICK as a dog AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!! headed out shortly to put up a tree stand anyways! will be out tommorow morning unless dead!!!!!!!!
Suck it up ,your not that sick if you can still put out stands..... :biglaugh:
IZZY, is there a story????? I'm going to try something different in the AM, going to set up in the wide open behind a skinny tree......we'll see!
That stinks Ken, I hope you feel better quick.
I saw two deer(in the woods), heard a bear woof and run away, saw a grouse, and found two very large piles of bear scat. I also found two dead deer...one a skeleton, and one...just shreds of skin buried in "piles of debris and leaves". Hard to explain...six foot circles of bare dirt, with piles of hair, hide, leaves and twigs heaped in the center. I have never seen anything like it. Winter coat from a deer, and smelled pretty ripe so I would guess a week or two old. I got pics, but they don't show too much detail and I have to wait until I get home. Any ideas?
Not a bad evening in the woods, although I must admit I was a bit miffed when I walked into my yard and saw a forkie harassing three does. Best part was he was broadside at 18 yards. How do I know? He was standing infront of my bh target. Bastages have a sense of humor!

Excuse the quality of the pic, it was a cell phone after all. Here you can see the two "piles" of debris containing the hair and hide segments.
Does a bear...well now ya know. For a rerference, the rock that is "loaded" is about the size of a 5 gallon bucket.
You already have your answer grasshopper , bet there is deer in that poo
Hey Jamie, you can answer the age old question, was there any out in the buckwheat :bigsmyl:
Could be guys. I have never known bears to "cover" stuff up like that, atleast around here. The scat did not appear to have one trace of hair or bone in it, and if I am not mmistaken, it would have looked differently if it was a meat diet...
this is the third time I have found dead deer, or their remnants, in the last two years. I am wondering if some other predator is at work here.
Jamie, did you find it anywhere near a road? I found one just like it. Deer covered up with leaves and chewed on. It was next to the Taconic Parkway so I was thinking bobcat on a road kill. Because you know there aren't any mountain lions in NY!
Going to try an after lunch attack for a few hours...change things up a bit!!
Terry, it was a few hundred yards off the road. An over grown field that was last cut about twenty years ago. The kind of stuff the bunny master would drool over. I know there are bobcats around, just saw one the other night. My issues is where is the skelton, bones...the bigger pieces. To only find hide and fur, well it has me perplexed.
I know the picture doesn't show it too well, but the circles were approximately 6-7 feet in diameter, and the "piles" were about a foot high.
Put a nice five point down yesterday afternoon. He came into the grunt call. I missed him first shot cause my bottom limb hit my stand. He ran off about twenty yrds. Hit the grunt call and he came right back in. Broadside at fifteen yrds hit him a little back. So I let him go for the night. Worried that the yotes mite get him. Went back in this morning and found him about hundred yrds from the stand. Nice buck..I'm a Happy Boy..Now it's Doe time..MUZZY PHATOM..OH YEAH..
Nice Tucker! Congrats!
way to go tucker
Mid day attack was a nice change....no deer but had a close encounter with a bunch of turkeys. Almost had a shot but the old girl smelled a rat and beat it out of there. Second time this year.Beautiful day!!
Well done Tuck.Fresh venny!Might regret it later but I passed on a 5pt. this morning at 12yds but there are some big ones running around in there and I have all next week off.Hope I don't end up eating 'tag soup'. :scared:
Jeff they do good in a crock pot
Way to go Fred!!
Haven't found a good way to cook 'em yet Jim...always leave a bad taste in your mouth.
Jeff I'm sure you will tag out. It's only a matter of time...
Way too much season left to be talking about tag soup!
I just found out that my vacation time got approved. I will be hitting the woods hard!
Im sitting here watch turkeys feed through my back yard....and im off to work. Typical kind of luck for me this year. Lol.
Hunted yesterday morning and saw 30 turkeys and 1 doe. The turkeys were at 30 yards and the doe at about 400 yards. I thought about a shot on the doe, but decided against it. :) Went again this morning and saw the same little 6 point I missed a couple weeks ago and he was cruising for love. I tried to sweet talk him with a little love grunting, but he seemed to know where he was going and it didn't involve the sharp end of my arrow. I did get wet though! I'll be back at it in the morning. I was thinking of going and sitting in the rain this afternoon, but I have a dentist appointment instead. Kind of the same isn't it?
I went down and Visited Keith at his camp in Schoharie. He put me in some really nice spots. Unfortunately it is 10,000 acres of acorns and apples. I hunted over a few scrapes and had a great time. No deer sighted and no squirrels in Range.
5 days hunting and no deer sighted except if you count the 4 I saw on the way to camp. (guess that makes me a bad hunter :readit: :banghead: )
I got wet this morning and home a little to late to head to the woods for a rainy afternoon. I'll be back at it in the morning.
Congrats Fred
Things are getting cranked up . Saw a nice buck trailing a doe grunting last night. I shot a eight pointer this morning and just drove the 4 wheeler up the road and saw a huge buck standing in the dirt road looking down the hill for does. It's rainy and turning to snow flurries tonight. Get in the woods !
Charlie, you are a great hunter. It's the finding part you need to get better at. Besides you'd probably just shoot over them. Now Becca, she'd probably make a good shot on one! :)
Terry, I cant disagree with such logic after I assume your conclusion comes form hours of observation in the outdoor labratory.
Tomorrow I am going to try still hunting. Stand hunting properties where deer only travel through temporarily is tough. you have to be there when they are moving through and if they have any distractions on neighboring property, guess what, you are not seeing deer or they will be running. Usually they have been nocturnal.
I have some public property that has deer but they are a tough hunt too. They hang out in areas that they can sense you from a half a section away. My hope, with this rain and a slow walk, and the geothermals I may get a shot opportunity. I also hope they are somewhat acustomed to smelling hikers. Most hikers dont stink as bad as me though :readit:
Charlie, you are definitely getting after them. It is only a matter of time I'm sure. I thought you were just across the river from me. How far North are you? You need come on down and hunt with me for a sit or two. I'll be going in the morning before work and Sat. most of the day. Mon. before and after work and maybe Tues. morning before my son and I head to Indiana to try our luck.
Congratulations Bob
Sorry, I got off topic!
Congratulations Bob. We'd love to see a picture if you got it. Also, tell us a bit more of the story.
Good for you Bob..Story and pix please..Congrats..
Way to go Bob!Lookin' forward to the details.
I started a seperate post under Morrison works it's magic. The rut is cranking up good. THIS is the time to be in the woods.
With my job being the way it is, I can't get back into the woods until November 13th. Hope to still have some action then..... I've go the following week off from work and you can bet I'm gonna use it!
... mike ...
Hit the woods Mikey Style this morning.
I was still hunting and had a deer on my back trail. I hunkered next to a couple trees but the deer smelled my track and went back the way it came. Later on I happened up on a little buck who was bedded about 30 yards. I didnt see him and he jumped as soon as I exited the brush. I dont think he knew what I was but he didnt stick around to find out. Wjen he stood up I went for the grunt tube only to find I must have dropped it. Finally I saw a deer after 6 days of hunting hard.
I'll be back in Washington County Tomorrow!
Good luck to all. Hope to get out some Sunday then hunting PA with the bow Monday & Tuesday.
Going for a throw back hunt in the AM. Taken my 67' Bear Kodiak ,3 cedars with Bear Razor heads and going for walk on some state land not far from home. Same as I did when I was a youngster.....and that was a long time ago. Hope everyone has a good and safe hunt this weekend  !!
Good day for making meat! Beautiful day to be out there. Wish I was but I love my "daddy time" too. Work at 3, and hopefully putting a few hours in tomorrow.
Heard there has been some blood trailing today though....
QuoteHeard there has been some blood trailing today though....
:saywhat:
"THE" Killer is back. He doesnt have a long drag but I hope he post a better pic when he gets home.
I wouldnt be moping if I was engaged in Daddy time , Id take it over hunting but Im working. A real nice day to be out there. I hear the deer are throwing themselves at hunters this morning, dang near jumping in the truck bed! Ill be out there Monday morn again. ;)
Some great stories guys. I haven't read all the posts on here, but I will.
Had a doe come in first thing this morning. she came in just as it was getting light. I was set up on the end of a small ridge where 2 "saddles" come together. I kicked about a 140 in buck out of there last week walking out of the woods.
I had the doe at about 10 yrds, but she was quartering towards me. she turned and walked to my right, I had her broad side at about 20 yrds. Now, so far this year I had a miss on a doe and a lost 8. It didn't really kill my confidence. I kept hearing Terry Receveor's voice telling Jen to pick a hair (its burned in to my head from our bear hunt!!)..well, I couldn't quite find a single hair, so I focused on the crease just above the elbow. the shot looked and felt good. It hit right behind the shoulder.
I hunted til about 10. I could see a few bucks chasing through out the morning, but nothing closer than about 80 yrds. the wind picked up about 930.
I climbed down, paced it off to 20 paces where I shot the doe. What a blood trail!!!followed it about 100 yrd right to my doe. I hit her dead center of the heart, and the point of the woodsman came out the armpit on the opposite side. It was the best shot that I've made in a deer with a recurve.
I'll see if I can send a picture.
Congrats Sean! Nice.
Thanks Jamie. It was the first one with the new PCH.
Yea Izzy, they are just throwing them selves in to the truck :saywhat: :saywhat:
Sean, that is awesome! Great shooting.
I actually followed my own advice this morning and mustered all my limited skill and talent and this was the result after a really tough 3 - 4 yard shot. :)
Thanks Terry, and congratulations!
While waiting a little while before taking up the track this little 5 pt came sauntering by at 5 yards.
A little while later I climbed down and didn't find blood right away. Since the deer was so close the shot angle was a bit steep. I shot all the way through as you can see and I thought the bottom hole would give more blood. Fortunately, the deer left good tracks as you can see from this photo and you can see that the blood started.
Well it didn't take long and the blood trail got quite a bit better. This is a nice little puddle of some bubbly blood. Fortunately, the deer was doing a great job at traveling right toward my truck.
I went to the Guru school of story telling so I have to run to the store with my wife real quick. More later.
Nice going Terry
I lost a large doe last Saturday and although it still sucks Im dealing with it. I shot her at 10 yards and nearly at my level while crouching. Shoulda been a gimme but I blew it. I hit her high about 5 inched down from the back and in line with her heart. I thought I had lungs but apparently I didnt. No blood until 30 yards and then a decent trail for about 75 then nothing at all. It was as if she was picked right up by a giant hawk. Two 4 hour searches and nothing. Saw a big boy while looking and a couple small ones as well as a few new stand sites. 1st one lost to trad gear and it hurts! Im finally ready to get back in the saddle Monday morning and Lord willing Ill catch back up to that big ol gal if shes still out there. Congrats to all you fellas making meat.
Hang in there Bro.
That is tough Iz. Think we have all been there, or will be. I hit one very similarly when I was younger. Never found her.
better luck next time bro.
Congrats Terry! Now on with it! Lol.
I feel for you Izzy, I did the same on an 8 last week.
I kept on the trail and while moving along this guy was giving me the business. I thought what the heck, squirrel for dinner.
Fortunately, the trail was easy to follow and this is what I found at the end. He died on the lawn of the farmers house where I hunt. Fortunately, they are out of town. They would not have had a problem, but not what I would like. He died about 25 yards from my truck. He really only traveled about 125 yards right down the hill to the house.
Here's one with him cleaned up a little.
Nice One Terry! Next time park your truck a little closer. ;)
... mike ...
Nice buck
You're right Mikey! That squirrel was a tough drag. :)
Nice! A double. Hope the squirrel was running at least....you know, to make it a challenge for ya. :D
See Ron, dang near jumped in his truck bed! T REC is that good!
Way to go fellas!!
I have to share this.
I went on my patrol at work. I typically see about 30-40 deer each time, mostly does. I saw that many does today as well. BUT every group of does was being harassed by a buck. Spikes and everything else imagined. The biggest was about 130" 8pt with a broken brow tine. I saw a total of 53 deer, including eleven bucks.
Then I got back to my post. As I was unlocking, I thought I heard a grunt. So I mouth grunted. BAM. Three different grunts from the suurounding woods. I tried my hand(mouth) at a snort wheeze. Got a response! First time I have ever heard one!
I played with what turned out to be three bucks for about ten minutes. Two (a six and a respectable 8) came out. Thought about scrapping but the six backed off. I heard them grunt. Saw them lip curl. Watched the 8 rub his tarsal glands together and urinate over them. The other one never showed himself, but kept grunting.
I know I wasn't hunting, but my heart rate was elevated! That was cool! Too bad I can't hunt here....some serious deer running around here....testimony that the three point rule does produce decent bucks in a few short years IMO.
I can't wait to get in my stand tomorrow!?
Thats pretty cool!!...dumb question...how do you post a picture?
Sean you can send it to me and I'll post it for you or you have to use PhotoBucket or some other image hosting site.
Jamie, that sounds like a ton of fun.
Izzy, I'll take lucky over good any day.
Congats Sean, Great job!
Way to go Terry, love trained deer that know where to die! :bigsmyl: Been sitting here patiently waiting to see something like this from you, knew it was just a matter of time.......
David
This morning was awsome! No shots. But seen deer to far away. Bucks chase in does. Here it was 30
Degrees and quite.
Tonight was about the same except the nieghbors were cutting wood still seen deer. To dark to see if they had bones on there heads
Be safe out there!

Izzy we don't mean for it to happen but it does. Takes a little soul searching to get through it. Just mean your human. Good hunting Monday.
Thanks Dave
Congratulations Sean :archer2:
Congrats from western n.y.
Here's Sean's great looking doe! Hey Shawn did you make the arrows I'm shooting? They look just like mine. We got them at the JLMBH.
Congrats Sean :clapper:
Very good!
Thanks all,
Thanks Terry for putting the picture up. thats all pure Koinkydink. I do like them in yellow though, they really show up.
CONGRATULATIONS Sean!!!!!!!!!!
Great going Guys as already mentioned earlier via phone.
Izzy, I had the same thing happen a few years earlier, Sorry you had to go through it but I'm glad you had enough respect to keep looking for the animal.
I had a great day in the woods.
As Terry was texting me about his buck I had jsut finished watching a spike chase off another spike and kake about 6 scrapes. Then I saw five toms but all the deer and turkeys were a bit out of range and completely unresponsive to calling. They didnt even look.
Then I saw a deer who spooked at my radio when my buddy called. I then saw another deer who was running a ridge. he was skylined and I coulndt quite tell waht it was.
From 11-12:15 I shared company with a nub buck who was munching on acorns at about 30 yards. My ride was waiyting for me at the trucjk so this brush pile waved him off and then snuck out of there.
To make the most of the day I hunted a horse farm close to home. I have sat there at least 20 times with no deer sightings. Tonight however, I had 3 deer wind me. Now at least I have an idea which way they travel at night. I think I am getting them pinend down but may need to spend some time next summer building some serious ground blinds for every wind possibility.
Great day to be in the woods.
Congrats everyone.
Sean and Terry congrats..Nice photo's
Tyler took his 1st shot ever at a deer with a bow yesterday morning and missed. He was on the ground when a doe came along and he made a bleat to stop her and shot high.Says she had him pegged and thinks she ducked the shot. That's bowhunting!
Jeff,
Tell Tyler it happens to seasoned pros! Suck it up, enjoy the experience and get back out there
Bet he was still smiling Jeff. Glad he missed, if not, could have gotten ugly. There will always be a next time!
Im hitting the woods today! Due west wind here, and that opens up a few great funnels for me to hunt, just need to figure out which one.
Debating on whether or not to take a shot if one presents, as I have some serious hunting planned for next week....hmmmmmm. LOL.
Good luck out there guys, and hunt safe!
i had a small spike or 3-4pt chase a doe by me at 6:45 this am. i grunted the buck back and he circled downwind of me. i had a small window at 20yds and took it. the arra hit a branch halkway to the deer and im pretty sure its still goin.... oh well..... 2 misses in 2 weeks...both at bucks..
its gettin me thinkin crazy thoughts. i think u know what i mean.. :(
gaff
Jeff, when a deer is alert, it doesn't matter how quiet the bow is, they all ways seem to duck that arrow! He'll get'em next time.
Don't give up T..You'll do it. You need to get one down befor your Dad..
I just got a text that tells me there was some more blood trailing today!
Jamie (gaff) Keep your head up. You'll get one soon enough.
Jamie (ishi) good luck. I am just ending a week of vacation and wish I could do it again.
Terry, you said you were done here in NY for a while. hmmm.
Maybe Izzy is making a comeback.
I had an oriole serinating me this morning. Other than that Nada.
Wow...im kinda tired in a very good way.... :goldtooth:
I snuck my way into the woods at about 2:30 today. I had a nice and steady NW wind, and it was perfect for a funnel between two ponds behind my house.
I climbed a nice oak I have used a few time in the past. Here is the view.
About 3:30 I had a very loud flock of turkeys walk behind me at about 120 yards. Man they make a racket!
I bleated three times, and stowed my call. Hearing crunch crunch crunch, I looked to my right. A tree rat. As I slowly moved my head back forward, I caught movement...
A buck had literally snuck in on me. Already he was at 15 yards, and moving with a purpose. He went behing a large oak, I grabbed my bow. Another, I stood. Then he hit the area where I laid some scent, and stopped. 9 yards, broadside.
I see him look behind him, head low and I hear leaves. I shift my eyes, and see a squirrel running towards him. I zone in on that pocket right behind/by the elbow. I slowly draw, hit anchor and the string slips. The arrow is on a cruise missle trajectory. Then he reacted. He ducked, and turned away from the shot. I caught him really far back(nicked a tenderloin), and it angled forward into the goodies. He took off, bringing my arrow with him. I could not believe the amount of blood gushing!
:coffee: :coffee: Congrats are in order already Jamie!
I was really worried about the hit. I knew it angled forward, but I hit him really far back...I got that sickening feeling...
I called my brother, had him start on his way over anticipating a long hard trail.
Once I climbed down, twenty minutes after the shot( I was shaking a bit, lol), I walked over to the where the shot took place.
The blood was, by far, the most incredible trail I have followed. It gave me a very good idea that I had made a lethal hit.

I didnt have to look hard for blood, that was for sure. It was sprayed everywhere. I did notice there were some bubbles mixed in, and I grew more confident.
I followed it through a small patch of "Shawn Leonard" multiflora, and paused to make sure the deer stayed on the same course. I scanned the area...
He made it about 90 Yards. His tail is left of the large white oak.
Not a huge deer by any standard, but I told myself, with this being only my fourth trip afield this year, that if I got a shot, I would take it.
Thankfully, a very sharp razorcap and the fact that he spun away from me instead of towards made this a very good hunt. Im very thankful that it went so well....
Way to go Jamie, looking forward to the rest of the story......
David
Congrats :clapper:
Thanks guys! The post mortem showed that I got real lucky. The razorcap took out the artery right below the spine, then angled forward taking out the liver and demolishing the offside lung.
I never found the BH, and the arrow snapped after about 50 yards. I hope to find it tomorrow when I retrieve my climber.
Goes to show ya, a sharp broadhead can make a difference with a marginal hit!
As soon as you described the hit, I thought "artery under spine"....I hit my doe there last week, the blood was immediately gushing!
Awesome Jamie! That will be some phenomenal venison. Congratulations.
Charlie, I'm done hunting NY until I get back from Indiana. I wouldn't have time to process another deer. I hope you are getting after them.
Congratulations Jamie.Glad you were succesfull.glen
CONGRATULATIONS Brother!!!!!!!!!! :clapper:
I knew you'd get one!!! It was just a matter of time.....
Did you try full helicle on that snow shovel?
Dianna truely smiled on you.
Nice shooting Jamie
Congtats Jamie, great story.
Nice bud!!! Damon texted me about your hit and than you texted me with the pic of the arrow! Looked good!! Congrats! Shawn
Thanks everyone! Much appreciated.
Nice Buck Jamie! I'm happy for ya brother. Enjoy the cutlets.... I should be up at my place Saturday. Can't wait to be back in the woods again.
... mike ...
Going to the bow only section of Albany Co. Tuesday. Hope'n for a good day!!
Congrats Jamie,  :clapper:
:clapper: :clapper:
Great Job Jamie!! Thanks for sharing with us! Really glad that you were able to make meat with that bow.
Awesome Jamie  :clapper:
That is great, I cant wait to get home and see the pics. They dont show at work.
Awesome Jamie. Get that grill fired up and share those tender loins with your son. :clapper:
Hunted Herkimer this morning and am still dizzy from the wind whipping my tree around.Saw a beautiful fisher, watched him for some time.He acted like he owned the mountain. Had a grouse land about 10 ft in front of my mug but he was in vines so no wood sent his way. Bad weather but a good morning none the less.
Thanks guys, the boy was very excited that I "knocked deer down with my bow". Think he will be going with me next year if he has his way!
I'm sure it wont take too much convincing Jamie. :D
I bet if you go and build a blind together this summer he can sit with you comfortably and have fun doing it together. You guys can take your bows along and both practice from the blind you build too. :archer:
Congrats Jamie!
Izzy, I own a little land in Norway, Herkimer county. One of the reasons the deer population is down is because of the fishers. They really do a number on the fawns. Love watching them though. Hunted up there this am. Saw a nice buck chasing three does on private land. Hunted south this pm. Saw 36 deer total this evening and had 3 unsuccessful stalks on does. 4 of those deer were bucks and one a beauty that cost me one of the stalks. He chased everything out of the field I was hunting. First time this in many years I have seen 40 deer in one day of hunting. Great day but the best part was one of the bucks I saw tonight looked a lot like the buck I hit & lost last week in the swamp. Maybe I did hit him above the spine after all. Didn't look like it to me but I'm hoping.
Good luck to all.
Keep at it Daniel. You will complete a stalk before long
nice story, good tracking.
Nice deer Jamie thanks for sharing >>>>----> ED
YEAH MAN!!! Good deal..Congrats..
Just got to work, and I saw a PIG of a 9pt bedded with a doe on the lawn. She got nervous when I stopped. He only watched her. She got up and ran, and he almost tripped himself trying to keep up! They are still amorous guys, good luck out there! And again, thanks for all the kind words!
Crotch Horn, this is the 1st anyone has mentioned to me that fisher might be fawn killers. Its very likely though, theyre a ferocious little beast. I see a lot of lone doe on the property I hunt but theres still enough of em. I was thinking all the bear and yotes were putting a dent in them but never really thought about fisher. I was told by a Maine guide that the state of Maine transplanted fisher to some areas to thin the yote population as they were known to go into their burrows in spring and kill and eat the pups. Interesting little fellas.I have had a few tanned and have a golden female at the taxidermist now.
Alright Jamie...good for you man!
Spent the day out and about....the saga continues, 60 hours in the woods............ :dunno: I must have a black cloud over my head!!
Keep after them Ron. The one that wants to ride in you truck just hasn't decided to jump in yet.
Izzy, I was talking to a very skilled trapper about the fishers & he is the one that told me about it. Said he even saw it once. Just the fawns though. We have lots of bears & yotes as well & I always blamed them, but now I know the population is down for another reason.
Just what we need up there, more competition. Like I was saying, I see a fair amount of deer there but its strange how seldom I see a young deer with a doe. I dont spend much time there in summer so I never see real small fawns. Ron, you must be doing something right, it keeps bringing you out there.
Fisher take fawns at every opportunity, don't think bears don't get there share and don't ever think a Bobcat won't take a fawn. Throw in our friend the coyote and it make things pretty tough for a young deer. No wonder I can't see one!
I always wondered why they dont allow fishers to be hunted?
Ron, Maybe you should try hunting where they do on TV? :dunno: Seems they are crwling with big bucks everywhere they turn.
Keep at it, it makes success that much tastier. ;)
Just got out of the woods. Had a good morning. Got in a little late this morning about 6:30am. On the way in I bump a deer. Don't know if it was a buck or doe. Got to the stand settled in and did some contact calls for does. About ten minute later I heard loud grunting at first I thought it was coming from down the hill. Then I turn to look up the ridge and there stood a ten point about 35 yrds away. He was wide, about 20" and just perfect. I'm sure he was 125 to 135" Nice brow tine 4 to 6". I wish I would have had the camera with me. Then he just walked off the way he came. Man nothing like being tag out and hunting does. I think the bucks know cause thats all I'm seeing.
Gee Frederick some of us wish we had that problem
Sounds like a good morning indeed :clapper:
I'm heading out in the AM I have the day off and my friend wants a small doe or a button :bigsmyl: Touched up the heads tonight
Good luck Jim..
congrats Jamie  :clapper:
Nice story Jamie. Congrats!! Joe
Had a forkhorn under the stand this morning, could have jumped on his back, and a 8pt. that hung up at 40yds.Forky made a rub to my right and then the wind swirled and he got a wiff of me.Walked stiff legged back to the 8 and they walked off to the north. There's an active red fox den 30 yds up the hill and saw a female go in and out 3 times.Shot over a coyote the other morning  .This has been the season of "almosts." :dunno:
Keep at it...
I had a fork horn under me this morning, no does yet.
Just got back and watched a good 10 pt. harrassing some does around 3:oo...same spot I saw 2 bucks this morning. If the wind is decent in the a.m I'll be there.Good luck filling doe tags Jim & Fred.
thinking about giving it a shot in the morning, have not been out for 2 weeks now.
Well, I connected today. 6pt. Bad shot from tree stand. A little high, and arrow still in. Its got me sick. I can see it over and over in my head. Not much of a trail to follow blood wise. Gonna give another look in the A.M.
17 yard shot, broad side. Lone buck. All of the sudden another buck comes out to give chase and spooks my target as I release. This is my first connect with trad equip, and I just cant wrap my head around feeling positive. I feel bad for my old lady who is putting up with my low hung head all day.
I thought today was the day....
Wish me luck tracking tomorrow. Good luck to everyone else.
good luck bro think positive! grid search and don't give up.
Been there Casey, know how you feel.Did it look like you got lung.Do a grid search...if you got vitals he may have bedded and given up the ghost.Let us know how it works out...goodluck!
Casey, How far from the top of the back was the arrow?
I did that once and found the deer lived. The arrow was about 7 inches from the top of the deer's back for me. I saw her feeding the next morning from about 45 yards and could clearly see the wound I inflicted.
From what I have been reading these hits are not uncommon and the deer almost always recover. I know it doesn't make it better but hopefully it makes you feel better.
And like Ken said give it a good grid search ad dont give up.
If you hit anything serious the deer will bed down and die close by unless he is pushed.
Also when looking for him in the morning keep an eye out ahead of you, sometimes they lay down and get stiff, you may be able to get a good follow up shot.
Good Luck Casey.
Thanks guys. I have been on the fence all day about posting anything regarding this due to embarrassment, but I'm glad I did. I feel a little better about it. I know this happens once in a while, and there is nothing you can do, other than practice more. Ive replayed this in my head over and over, and everything felt perfect. I just wish it wasn't my first.
I'm very thankful for the tradgang support group and to have this piece of land to hunt. Im most thankful for my family and their support. I have been stalking these does in my area every morning, and today, two bucks come outta nowhere. Its exciting seeing the rut take place. I gotta bring home some venison to keep the wife happy and to justify all the hours Ive put in.
I'll keep you all posted.
I wish I was seening the deer that you guys are, it's been a very slow season,I go out 2-3 times in a row and see nothing. went out all day today and saw only 3 deer that i ended up bumping.I don't think the deer are moving at all.
Good luck in the am.Unfortunatly ,bad hits or misses have happened to most of us.All you can do is give it your best effort.Hope you find your deer.glen
longrifle , your not the only one............
Had a lot of action today hunting not-so-tame deer in Westchester County with our Super Guide Greg (Skipmaster1). Enjoyed the company of Jamie (ishiwannabe) and Chris (bowspirit) also. No deer down or hero pics but you can bet your tree rat camo jump suit that I'll be going back!

Zmonster take your time in the morning. Grid the area like Jeff said. All you can do is you best. You only fail when you give up.Don't give up. Just do your best. It happens.
Zmonster,
it happens. Did the same thing two weeks ago myself. Did not find the deer but 85% sure I saw him again a couple days ago. Wish I could have gotten a better look to see if there was a wound/scar. I was as low as you get. Have not got a deer with tradgear yet but will. Had never lost a deer either. Good luck and take your time looking for him. Best of luck & pics if you find success.
I'm hoping to give myself a B day present, a nice fat doe. Heading out here soon.
Happy Birth day Jim..Good Luck..Stay warm!!!
Happy Birthday Jim! Hope you get that gift.
Nothing yet, didn't even see a squirrel :banghead: Going to try this afternoon.
Had some more action in Westchester this morning... Check it out in "Does Almost......."
I'll be hitting some public property in the morning. Last chance to bow hunt b4 the rifle season starts.
I saw zero yesterday, but today is a new day and I'm heading out before church
Saw 2does,2 fawns,a spike and 2 coyotes this morning...couldn't get a shot at any of them but looks like I need to do some predator control this Winter with the centerfire bow. ;)
Know just what you mean Jeff... Gonna use my .243 recurve for them this January. :D
... mike ...
Got out at 3 after work. Saw nothing but squirrels and 2 "fellas" walking through the woods doing who knows what. Unfortunately I did not bring blunts out in my quiver.
Nothing this morning but 2 squirrels and a few song birds.
Unfortunately, I'm Done bow hunting for a bit. I was really hoping to loose an arrow by now. Good luck to anyone who has time to hunt this week.
Just looked at the weather channel and Tuesday is looking really good.Lat time I checked it was looking like rain.Hang in there Charlie, we still got time.
Today is the first day in 2 weeks without seeing a hair. I have averaged seeing 2 bucks a sit. I generally only hunt in the morning from sun up to 11 to 12. Most of the deer I have seen are with in gun range, Ive missed 2 bucks, and that was my fault for trying to hunt wearing my new contacts. They changed my perspective on distance a little.(one ducked) I pick and shoot a leaf right before I get down. still no deer in the freezer.
5 days left. I suppose thats why they call it "hunting".
Pete
Should cool down next week, it aint over till the fat lady sings ;)
I missed a beast of a 4 pt I rattled in this am. Ten yards on the ground.....can we say jello?
I too am without a deer yet. After at least doubles for the last 4 years.A bad hit,a passed chip shot at a glorified spike, and a miss at under 15 yds and I am deerless.5 days left, all of gun season, and winter bow.I still have some time to arrow a deer. You are only a loser if you give up.To all my brothers still on the prowl, good luck.glen
none for me either yet, its been a slow season so far,not much seen, i drew on a small buck while ground hunting on sat. nite but he spooked befor i could shoot, your right its not over for me until about 5 o' clock on fri, there is still time,Lord help me.my family of 6 is getting hungry.
Youre right Glen plenty of season left.
I am done for the early season as I have to work up until Gun season starts.
I will be using a rifle for Rifle season this year but plan on setting it down after this year if I manage to get a deer with it. I will then pick up my Muzzle loader also for personal reasons and then my bow will be back in my hand. through February.
I wish I chose to take this week off from work instead of last week. Its hard to chose the right week when you have to take your time off 4 months in advance. I had a great week off last week though.
Good luck to whomever will be hunting the rest of this week.
Discouraging season--not many deer seen, 3 different bucks 2 of which are spikes. My vacation is almost over and I have been hunting really hard for the entire season with poor results--gets worse every year as hunting properties dry up for various reasons. I will hang in but man am I tired!
Got some stuff to do, then maybe hitting some state land for a doe hunt. They were chasing like crazy at work today....
I'm thinking about taking off Fri all I have left is some doe tags and a friend that wants a small doe.
hey guys congrats to all so far, me and dad have been hunting pretty hard this year with not whole lot to show for it, we have each had several opportunities at illegal bucks(3 on one side in our area) all with in 10 yards, and i missed a nice doe a week ago, shot rite over her back at about 15 yards.
but last Friday morning our luck changed a little, at 7:15 i saw a big doe feeding her way down towards me on an opposite hillside from my stand. She worked her way in a large circle and disappeared down a hill into some really thick brush. about 20 minutes later i hear footsteps in the river behind me i turn and see her walking out to the middle of the river trying to cross. she made it out about 50 yards and decided to turn around. she came back to shore shook off and headed rite for me. she had about 150 yards to walk and a steep little hill to climb but she came straight in and stepped into that one "perfect spot" for my tree stand, wide open and only 10 yards and stopped on her own, the situation was almost hard to believe.
i had big doe fever and was shaking pretty bad so the shot was a little high and back but i too caught the major artery under the spine, she ran about 60 yards and stopped and fell over. She is one of my bigger does with any weapon and i couldn't be happier. (http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k5/tkosteczko/Hunting/DSC00034.jpg)
Nice big doe ...well done  :notworthy: !!!
Nice deer Tom, congrats!
I haven't been out In a week and a half due to work. I've had quite a bit of action up until the last time that I went out, which is when I shot a doe. I've hunted Delaware, Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester counties, and have had pretty good action in all.
I'm going to try to get in the woods Thrus and Fri between shifts. Who needs sleep????
Nice doe Tim, great job!
David

Hang in there, I have shot deer on the last day last thing. Like I tell my son you can go for days even weeks and not see anything, but don't let your guard down
Just back from the evening hunt in the rain. Last 5 minutes a 6-point buck snuck in on me, and he spooked when I turned my head. I need some good luck!
NICE JOB..She is beautiful. That is a big girl..HUGE..What a tank. Good for you..Don't give up you still have a buck tag..That is so cool.Meat in the freezer. I can see the big smile on your dads face..Big high five..
Nice Tim! Big doe.
Hit the state land, stalked right up on a six pointer. Such is my luck with no buck tag left.
A few more days left. Don't know if I will make it out again or not.
good luck guys and girls.
That's a lot of eating right there! Great Job!
GLENN
Nice Doe Tim
Nice doe Tim.Congrats. Nothing but a tree rat and a grouse in a 6 hour sit in Herkimer this morning. A rifle will feel good in my hands saturday morning. I thought about toting my bow saturday but Noah aint having it. To make matters worse, while driving home I checked my voicemail and I had a message from animal control. The big 4 I was hunting close to home was deceased!!! Car got him a half mile from my house. I still have almost a month to hunt in my bow only area, Im just tired of suburban interruptions.
I'm done for the season with the bow unless I have an unused tag after the gun season. Was a good season but still have not brought one home with the bow. I will be happy with the bear & turkey this year though. Good luck to all those still at it. The shotgun will put meat in the freezer.
Real nice Tim.Happy for your success.glen
what a pig of a doe tim nice job, looks like you got her with a 76 super-k. i to might take all day off on fri, self employment is good to me that way.
One last sit friday night, Good luck to all this weekend!
Pete
Timmy, that's a big ol' gal....congrats again buddy :clapper:
Thanks everybody I'm real happy with her, and fillin the freezer just made my bowseason a lot longer.
Longrifle, that's exactly rite good eye, ever since I got serious about the recurve I've been shootin a 76 super k blue striper. This one is 60lbs
Today is the last day before kaboom season, I'm not going to work today. I have a few doe tags left so I'm going to give it one last chance here.
Good luck to those going out!
Good luck everyone and be safe this weekend.
Jen and I are off for a youth hunt in Ohio.
Youth hunt???? You sho aint no ute Terry! Good luck to Jen. Ill bet she puts at least on on the ground.
Good luck Jen!!!!
David
Good luck Jen. I stayed in the stand till last light and saw no deer, but I did enjoy the last day of bow season and have no regrets.
Well ended the season with my 6 yr. old son hunting with me tonight,he sat on the ground about 10 yds. behind me while i was in a tree,we saw 6 deer with one small buck in the group. They only came to about 30 yds, which is way too far for a shot. I was praying that I would be able to get a shot with him with me, but it wasen't in Gods plan today. Tommorow it's hunting with my 76 year old father, brother and a few friends,I'll be using my new .45 cal T/C Pro-hunter muzzleloader. I would like to put 5 deer in the freezer for the winter, with 6 people in my family we will eat it all.Good luck and be safe to all.
Hey Jen enjoy the time with your Dad. No matter what happen at least you have this time together..Good luck..
A little birdie told me of a deer taken with a bow during Gun season :saywhat: :bigsmyl:
And that birdie's name would be...........?
CONGRATS!!!!! to whom? :dunno:
Hopefully he'll chime in later. I'll Give you a hint though. He lives in NY's Southern Zone. :smileystooges:
WELL??????? Let's Hear It!
Well, we made it back from the Ohio youth hunt and Jen had a great time and actually passed up several bucks at point blank range. She had a nice buck at 8 yards but it had a broken rack on one side. She didn't want to shoot it. On the last hunt she had a decent 8 pt and took a shot. She felt she had a good shot but unfortunately the shot was off a little. Overall, it was a wonderful time with Jen and Tyler.
I was finally able to get back into the stand yesterday morning before work and a young doe decided to commit suicide. My wife always tells me to shoot the small does, so I did what she said yesterday and added a very good eater to the freezer. It was a gift from above and the deer simply came right up to the stand and posed for me broadside at 5 or 6 yards. I fortunately, took my time and picked a spot and had a nice short tracking job. Sometimes you just have to be grateful for the gifts given to you. I still have a buck tag and I'll be back after them tomorrow and Saturday. Good luck to all. They are still moving. Unfortunately, it was a hunt before work and I didn't get any good pictures. I simply have one of it hanging in the garage. Not a good photo.
Hey Terry, sounds like it was a great time. When I get some time, I'm going to pick your brain on some DIY hunts.
Anytime Sean! I keep detailed journals, gear lists, etc. Been real lucky and have done quite a lot of them.
Finally Terry, I thought they were going to tie me up and Torture me to find out who was successful.
Congratulations again. :clapper:
Congrats again buddy :notworthy:
Way to go Terry!
Congrats Terry!!!! Sounds like a good hunt with Jen and Tyler too......
David
Congrats T Rec!
Another bloody arrow and short tracking job this morning. I'm sure the lucky hunter will chime in with a great story. It was a nice buck taken with a bow in gun season. Ohh yeeeaahhh....
Awesome. Now who was it? :saywhat:
YESSSSSSS.......this is a good one too.... :clapper: :clapper:
David
:clapper:
:knothead: Congrats to whomever you are.
Go take a look at Guru's thread "Hard to put into words".
Yep seems like a heck of a story on the way.
Thanx fellas...

That's a sweet picture Curt
Love it when the N.Y. guys do there killing during the gun season as well, nice.
hey guys, braved the cold yesterday and scored on a year and a half old doe, she isnt a monster but she is my first deer with the bow during gun season.
This particular doe was starting to become trouble as i had missed her during the bow season and now every time she came in she would look rite into the tree and stare me down. although she didn't spook she knew there was something that didn't belong in that tree so she would always turn around and never give me a shot, we had done this same dance three or four times since the day i shot over her back, only this time i passed the test enough that she decided to take the 3 more steps i needed her to take.

Great job Tim on a nice looking doe!
David
Way to go and great persistence.
Great job Tim. I'm dealing with the same thing. I have to change my strategies to deal with this doe in my area. They learn so fast.
Alright Tim! Nice!
Congrats again buddy...dad looks cold :clapper:
Nice deer Tim
Can taste those back straps now!
... mike ...
Way to go!You finally got her,and during gun season too.Very cool.
Nice going Tim.Congrats..
Great job Tim ! She looks like a real nice deer. I shot my first trad deer in gun season quite a few years ago. In the morning when I showed up with my bow all of the other guys made fun of me. They were all hunting with guns from tree stands. I ground hunted and was the only one to take a deer. Nobody has ever said anything about bow hunting in gun season to me again.

I could see you pulling that off Bob
Bunny's soon for me after this weekend, I'm not as worried about the smoke poles as I am the gun hunters. I have a batch of Bunny arrows just waiting to go  and three beagles that wont quit no matter what.
Man,I wish I lived closer to you Jim...would like to do some bunny hunting. You gonna get out for deer with the bow?I'm thinking of taking a sickday this week and give it one last try.
I'm done with deer, I'm in Bunny mode now. If you lived closer than you could be in trouble with your wife too, you would be hunting with me all the time, and that's all the time :bigsmyl:
awesome fellas. I too cant resist looking closer at the briers for bunners They are looking better than the deer sign daily.
Jim if ya need help killing them bunnies you have my number.
i too have been thinking about the bunnies, it is so much fun.i can't think about them until next week. i have to be out there on the last day.
Well, the season is winding down, so today I thought I would pull a tree seat I had left in the woods. Grabbed the old Mahaska longbow, put on the snow camo and took a walk for a few hours.Cold and windy and not much activity in the woods. Some old tracks from different critters but no game seen. It has been 4 weeks since I have seen a deer. Still nice to wander around for a bit. Will go out again with a friend on Sunday and see what happens!
Another deer hit the ground this morning. I'm sure the persistant hunter will chime in pretty soon.
Couldn't have been me, I was busted by a sixth sense.
Congrats, can't wait for a story.

Nice going Curt
As if it was meant to be.Good for you,Curt!
Went out the AM with a friend, did a couple of small pushes on State Land, actually saw 2 deer does, no shot offered. As the season winds down I now have 103 hours logged in the woods, 15 deer total seen no shots offered. I'm thinking it is not meant to be that I shoot a deer. I did see more deer this year, mostly because I spent less time up North. But it is frustrating to never even come close to getting a shot!! It's been a long time......
Youre still a spry fella and you still have your health Ron, you have plenty o' time. If you run out of patience maybe you can just follow Curt around.Wear a leafy suit instead of plaid wool and he'll never know your there.
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/DSCN1413.jpg) And besides,,, anyone who can shoot like this and not split his britches is "GONNA" get it done, its just a matter of time.
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/FSCN1498.jpg)And then theres this killer whos not far behind. If either of you are in the witness protection program I apologize, I just thought a couple of pics of some good times and warm weather might cheer us up a bit.
Wow Izzy,I had almost forgotten how short Mikey is. :p
Congrats Curt..Your filling the freezer this year..
I'm thinking about a combo Tree Rat Hunt with 3D and Muzzy Blocks this February..... So long as my wife is up to speed after surgery and we don't have three feet of snow. Keep It In Mind.
... mike ... aka WAYSIAH ... :p ...
He aint short hes my bud! You put that deal together Mikey and Ill be there. I had a blast last time.Hope your wife is well.
Us wee folk have to stick together..Easy there Jeff..I'll bit your ankle..Mike let me know when..Speedy recovery for the Mrs..So Mikey can come out and play..
Well folks the fat lady done sang her song for me.Today was to be my last NY hunt but I got roped into taking my mother in law Christmas shopping.Either play along or the rut would come to a screaching halt in my neck of the woods if you know what I mean. No deer with the longbow but I had some good hunts even though sightings were way down from last year I think due to the windy and rainy days of late October.Looking forward to stumping and small game with some of you in the coming months.Congrats to all the successful folks out there this season.Off to see if I can get it done in TX next week.
Happy Holidays,Izzy
Congrats to everyone for a good deer season. Dead deer or not, it sounds as if most put in a good year.
I'm pretty much done in NY as well. Freezer is full and I don't need to kill another deer. Gonna try for some rabbits, squirrels, and thump some geese with the shotgun.
Mikey - Tyler, Jen, and I would be honored to lose some arrows shooting at squirrels with you.
I'm going to give it one last shot tomorrow morning. Its my reg. day off. I really can't complain about this season. got a doe in the freezer and had a ton of action early on, even though my time was limited this year. I still may hit a few of my old haunts down in Westchester next week.
this was a great thread, with a lot of great stories.
Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year every one.
