I'm currently using 2016 XX75 arrows with 150gr Snuffer heads for a total arrow weight around 530gr +- 5gr.  My bows are all 49-53# for my 29" draw length.  I'm thinking of increasing the arrow weight and FOC.  Was considering getting brass or steel inserts, 100gr.  What size arrow should I be looking at with that setup for proper spine? 2216?

It is a little harder with aluminums because there isn't a big selection of heavy inserts for the sizes.

I don't know of any steel inserts.There are only 3 sizes of brass inserts for aluminum-2016,2117 and 2315/2317.

2016 are .531 deflection,2117 are .407.I'm not sure if 2117 would be quite stiff enough for a 100 gr weight increase.It might be if it could be cut shorter than your 2016's.

It could be done with the 2315's which I believe are 340 spine but I'm not a fan of that fat a shaft as it will slow penetration compared to the thinner ones.

A really good shaft and tough,is the 2020.You can modify the 100 gr brass insert to fit in it.You screw a field point into the insert.Chuck the field point into a drill or drill press.While it is spinning,use a mill file to reduce the shank of the brass insert.Stop the drill occassionally and test the diameter with a piece of shaft.It will probably end up at app. 90 grs which probably would be very close.

The easiest way to increase the front end weight would be to get a different broadhead-a glue on,and use either a 75,100 or 125 gr steel broadhead adaptor,in conjunction with the standard aluminum insert.

I would get 2020 shafts and shoot a variety of point weights till I found out which they liked,then pick a glue on broadhead that would give me that weight when combined with the right weight steel adapter.

Like I said,the other option is to reduce the 2016 brass insert.I have done this with 2018's.It takes a couple minutes per insert.You still don't know exactly the proper head weight till you shoot them though.

At 530gr you should have no problems with penatration out of a 50# for anything from moose on down....I shoot pretty much the exact same arrow out of a 60# hill style bow and it zipps right through deer and pigs.

I shoot 2216s cut to 30 inches , 58# at 29inch draw, 250 gr. up front , total 680 gr. Martin Super Diablo Recurve. I have 2117s same set up , they work also, but they are close to to weak. Hope this helps,  Mark.

I have a 27 1/2 to 28" draw depending on the bow and I shoot a 2018 out of both my 55# Fox LB and my 57" Bighorn recurve. I cut the arrow 29" BOP and put 75 gr. steel inserts into a 125 gr BH which gives me a 600gr arrow.  The shoot great and will blow through a deer.  With your 1" longer draw this setup should work well with what your shooting.  If you don't want that much weight you can use a stardard 125gr to 150gr head and get an 525 to 550 weight arrow from the 2018".

Instead of insert get glue on Snuffers with 100gr adapters.

So far the only penetration problems I've had is on alert deer where their movement at the shot may disrupt the path of the arrow.  I'm looking more for the benefit of quieter arrow/bow and quicker stabilization.

Thanks for all the input.  I may try the glue on head method.  I have some 2117 and 2216 shafts I can try with different weight field points.
