Title: how to wrap a riser for a friend?
Post by: kevshin21 on October 14, 2010, 04:18:00 AM
So as the title says, I have a friend in need of some help. I am kind of stumped since I am pretty new to archery so I am asking you guys for help. My friend has this shelf less bow that has a pretty round but flat grip on it. I found a picture of what his riser kind of looks like. The edges are rounded off of course.

Now he does not want to wrap the riser completely because he wants to show the prettiness of the wood. So I recommended something like this

Now I am wondering if this is even feasible to do? so basically the belly and the back is covered and there are small strips wrapped around to secure the whole thing. Also if anyone else has an idea, I would love to hear it.

also we are not using traditional cow leather. He wanted to use sting ray leather for a different feel

Does your friend want to wrap it himself or does he  want someone else to do it?  What you are suggesting can be done but I would suggest a little different way.  To get the desired look that you are proposing the strips would have to be rather skinny, there really isn't a lot of real estate in a bow handle, and the piece of leather to fully wrap one is not really that big.  The purpose for wrapping a handle is to build it up for the feel of the grip, to match the person shooting the bow, and for a better ability to hold on to the bow, wood and other materials being slickery espically when cold.  Looks are a secondary reason for wrapping a handle.
Hope this helps some..................

Why cover it up at all-just leave it. Or you could lace the grip you want with some criss-cross.

I asked him why and he basically told me that he wants that white part in the middle of the ray skin to be showing on the back of the bow. Sorry he is not very tech savvy so I am talking for him. Can this work by just getting a strip of the leather and adding it on the back of the bow like how people do it with snake skin?

kind of like in this thread
