Title: Getting the shakes already
Post by: 2Blade on May 22, 2007, 10:46:00 PM
Ive been thinking about October with my recurve and im shaking already. I cant imagine what im going to feel with a deer in recurve range. For some reason I dont think I can pull it off I get pumped as it is I dont know what to do!

Small game hunt. Get some blood on an arrow and things will get better.

What he said! Also go to a place where theres a lot of deer and spend some time close to em,takin pics or just watchin. Learn what body postures mean what, etc. Good luck BTW

Yep, what David said.

After making one of the best shots I have ever made on this rascal last night, I was MUCH MORE confident if I drew the string on a Bear, it was going DOWN!!!!

Thanks ive had the worst luck small game hunting I shot at a squirrel at 19 yards and my arrow was on a direct course but he jumped at the last second! As close as ive got to chipmunks I had one jump the string at 10 yards last night I didn think they could move that fast at that range.

Tune your bow some to quiet it down a little. Brace height, string silencer position, arrow weight, etc. Sounds like you might be having some noise issues though squirrels and munks are notoriously skittish but who wouldn't be when you're food to just about every predator in the woods.

I do need to get some string silencers. In reality should my recurve be more quite then my compound? They have jumped both

Your recurve should be a lot quieter than your compound if tuned right.

Yes, your recurve should quieter than your compound...much quieter.  I developed Bow Hush to quiet string slap on recurves, and the Hush Puppies do a good job on the string vibration as well.

Uhhh...just try keeping your heart rate down...... (if'n your heart rate gets to high... the bodies ability to perform is highly degraded..) lots of practice and being able to hit with your curve should give you the confidence... Think positive and you'll do fine...

my mantra is remeber to breathe...    :knothead:   the other is just trying to relax and let it happen!!! Oh yeah, and don't forget to pick a spot...

a lil breathing exercise is to slow your heart is to count back wards in your mind...I do this when I feel myself getting a lil amped up watching a deer approach.... (99.98.97. 96. 95...etc) while trying to do a slow 3-4 count breathing cadence (in 99,98,97,96 pause95-out94, 93, 92, 91...pause)

I just installed my string silencers made by Kwikee Kwiver ill see how they work today. Ive never tuned a recurve so I dont really wanna play around with it when I dont know what im doing.

I am happy to see I am not the only one that feels that way.

The day I stop getting "amped" from hunting is the day I take up knitting...may that day never come.

Embrace the excitement, let it wash over you and through you...enjoy it. Life's too short not to savor the rush you get from being close to an animal.

Eventually, you will learn how to enjoy it...then control it so you can make the shot. IMHO, that only happens through lots of encounters. Like Dave and others suggested, the best way to learn how is to take small game first, then med game, then deer sized game. The more successful shots you make, the easier it will get...but make no mistake about it, I don't think it ever goes away and still hits even the most seasoned heros of our sport from time to time.

I shot my Kempf and wow the Kwikee Silencers made my bow whisper quite actually deadly quite. I got that taken care of now which is great my biggest thing is my shooting I really want to use the back tension but it changes from day to day for me one day ill be shooting great then I cant hit a dang thing. I recall a squirrel hunt with my recurve where I was really pumped for some reason and with the BT I couldn't pull my bow it was like my back muscles were just locked up and wouldn't move. I started stalking squirrels and I found I shot better on at an actually animal with no back tension and tense fingers like ive always shot. Should I keep shooting this way or just keep going with BT? Im pretty sure you guys are going to say BT but im scared im gonna get locked up on a deer like I did with the squirrel and not be able to draw.

Welcome to bowhunting for squirrels. Bring a sense of humor and leave your pride at the truck. Those little critters have humbled me more times that I could begin to recall.
