3 more long days before Saturday morning's opening day! I've got all my chores done for my property owners. The woods smell of falling leaves, there are lots of acorns still on the ground, the stands and blinds are set, and I'm shooting better than ever. I've been seeing lots of deer and turkey. The air is cool and I could use some peace and quiet. I am excited! :D Life is good!
Deer Hunting Time Is Here Again
Deer hunting time is here again
And many hunters take to the woods
After months of planning with family and friends
They gather in common brotherhood
It's a freedom that fills the soul of a man
With the peace of God's nature all around
Lessons that have been taught since time began
And lifelong memories and friendships are found
Hunting is taught by tradition still yet
Knowledge passed on from man to man
And you'll learn things that you'll never forget
And respect nature more, our wildlife, and our land
So all you hunters enjoy this time
May you be skilled and have lots of luck
May God bless you as you hunt today
And may you bag that ten point buck! !
Bless you, and may your hunts be graced with the gifts from above.
I will be out there in a couple of weeks, and your poem hit me straight in the heart. My buddy was out there last weekend, and he saw no sign. Not unusual for this time of year, but I have such hope. Ten point or a doe fawn, it is the doing, and the hoped-for gift that keeps me going.
The freedom of walking the blessed land with a bow in hand is the greatest gift of all.
Killdeer
Thanks Killie! All the best to you! Charlie still asks about you! Doing great as a Boy Scout. I have no doubt that he will become an Eagle just like his dad.
Brian,
I'm a fellow Eagle and my name is Charlie so I know it can be done ;) :readit: . I wish him and you the best in his journey.
Unfortunately Saturday is Out I was hit with an unexpected training that will cost me 50 bucks if I miss. :readit: :banghead:
There is always Sunday.
Good Luck all you NY'ers this weekend.
Charlie is an autistic boy that was in my Pack. I'm the Cubmaster and a Life scout. He really took to archery so somebody donated a bow to him an Killdeer made him some sweet arrows. He's a great kid from a truly awesome family. He is focused on scouting and continues to confront and overcome hos challenges.
Sorry about Saturday. I hear the deer have training that day too! (does that help at all?) :dunno:
Brian, have a safe and productive season..... :wavey:
Tell Charlie that I think about him often, and wonder what kind of arrows a growing young man might be shooting these days.
Killdeer
Good luck !
That's awesome Brian. You too Killie :notworthy: :notworthy: :archer:
Brian,
As the father of an 18yo Autistic young man, Thank You for taking Charlie under your wing.
Good luck and be safe out there.
Good luck out there everyone. I will be pulling a double....I am hoping I can hunt Sunday...then who knows after that.
It's about time. It is ridiculous that the season doesn't open on October 1st!
Good luck to all and be safe.
As a former Scoutmaster and father of 2 Eagles, thanks for all you are doing. It does make a difference.
Good luck guys! Long Island opened on the first but haven't had a shot yet. Hopefully this weekend.
Looking forward to Saturday.
Been too busy to do much this year, but will at least be out there Sat afternoon.
Good luck all.
Opening Day can't come soon enough for me. If all goes well I'll have a week at my place upstate. Maybe I can close the deal this time around... Maybe.
Best Of Luck To Everyone!
... mike ...
Weather forecast where I'll be hunting. Sounds great to me.
Saturday: A chance of showers before 2pm. Partly sunny and breezy, with a high near 55. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
GoodLuck to everyone....Aimsmall...Shoot Straight...
Saturday is opening day of muzzleloader up here in the northern zone.It seems like archery season is getting shorter every year before the guns start going off..Going to keep at it though...Good luck to everyone in the southern tier of NY...Mike
First year out with no wheels for me. Wicked pumped. Good luck everyone!
Just in time for opening day, my shooting s##ts the bed!!! Silly me runs into this every now and then.I mean, I can hit vitals but not pick a hair. Got a few days to tune back in or I just wont shoot until I do.I hate to make excuses but this really hit me after I had a really bad cold. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
To be more specific,,, this is with a particular bow that I planned on hunting this season. "Old Faithful" is still stacking em in the bullseye but I was hoping to take another gal to the dance. The good news is all 5 of my tree stands are very active and I have 2 separate ground blinds that I put quite a bit of effort into building that I will hunt this year.
Good luck men.I agree with the October first opener.
2 more long days!!! You'll be fine Izzy!
Hope you get your wish Mike!
Hey , it opens on the 27th of September, Take a drive and hunt the big woods..........
Good Luck guys!
Terry, not sure if we talked about it but I didn't know you were the father of 2 eagles. and a former Scout Master. I was an assistant SM for 2 years after graduating Scouts . My Father was a SM and had 2 Eagle sons. That's cool.
Izzy, Take the bow you shot the squirrel with. If you can kill a squirrel while trying to sleep....
Oct. 1st? :dunno: thought I was the only one who thought this way.
I wasn't going to do this, but I can't help myself. This is where I'll be. :wavey:

Be glad your guys season is over the rut.Ours ends the last sunday of October. Was wanting to get a NY license this year but with the moose hunt next week and the Ohio trip next month it may be too much.Might still get one...kinda still up in the air.
I hunt near Morrisville & Otisco NY. If anyone wants to come on over just PM me. Very pretty areas around here with a fairly good chance of some close encounters.
Phil
Brian, that is some beautiful country. You are just across the river from where I am. I'm not real far from the Stockport Creek railroad tressel.
Izzy, your bad shooting is better than my good shooting.
Charlie, I've been in scouting for over 20 years and have been everything from a merit badge counselor (still am) to troop committee chair.
PhilNY, that is a very generous offer and you certainly are in some very good looking deer country.
I'll be meat hunting on Saturday so if it's brown it's down. Unless it's a 1 1/2 year old buck. I just can't shoot them. Actually passed on a @100" 8 pt last year from the tree I'll be in on Saturday. I'm hoping he made through and added 30" of bone. All out of deer steaks. Got a little ground venison left, but the roasts and steaks are gone and I put 5 in the freezer last year. Beef tastes funny! Some good butterfly backstrap wrapped in bacon and cooked on the grill with some mushrooms on top. Ummm, ummmm!
Good luck to all you folks. Brian, your pics look like Iowa! Im at the range with work today and tomorrow and then 4 days of hunting barring heavy rain. Mikey, Ron ,Charlie and Brian,,, Im crossing my fingers for you fellas. I know you all got what it takes!
I can't wait. Good luck everyone.
One more day of work.
Made a final check on our stands after work today
Updated weather forecast...
Saturday: A chance of showers, mainly before 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 55. Breezy, with a northwest wind between 17 and 23 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Brian,
That Forecast sounds great. I'll be looking out the window form a stupid work training then going to a surprise B day party for the wife's G-Ma.
I can Justify the work only because 2 reasons, I'm glad to have a job and 2 the overtime will help a couple extra bills this month.
Cant wait for the stories. I may have to check in on our break from the training.
Thanks for the good luck blessings guys.
Ahhh, use the overtime for a new bow! The bills ain't going anywhere! :deadhorse:
since we have 5 weekends this year, I'm taking a 5 day pass on opening day to go chase them up north with a smoke pole in some back woods on a canoe/tenting opportunity. Good luck all, have fun, and leave me one in the southern zone please.
Brian, Don't tell anyone! :readit:  There is always a portion of overtime going to the bow fund.
Good for you Bob. I'm Taking the first week of November myself.
I say forget the early morning sit and go into the woods about 8:30, the rain will have stopped or let up and the deer will move than. I have from Nov. 5th. to the 22nd. off! Should be good hunting than!! Shawn
Brian, I hunted that property years ago with a rifle!!Looks kind of the same still!! Izzy 5 stands? You better get busy buddy!! I just finished my 57th. yesterday!! I know, I know, how do ya hunt them all? I don't I usually sit maybe 25 or 30 different ones each year, but I want a stand for every wind and changing conditions and I hate hanging a stand in mid season, although I hung 4 last year during the season! :bigsmyl:
Good to see ya Shawn!
Wow Shawn I would be happy just to have enough energy to hang a third of those stands. My hat goes off to you bud. Have a good season.
Phil
Shawn, some of my stands are 80 miles apart so I cant even use them to take advantage of changing winds. :banghead:
Well everything is set now and Im still getting those nigt before butterflies (Cool!) after 25 years of hunting. Good news is that my shooting problem worked itself out, it was a poor anchor. Hopefully I can put Jackson on a blood trail tomorrow. Its date night for wifey and I so Im outa here. Be safe, enjoy yourselves and good luck!
The week is finally over. Just gonna wait on the rain and sharpen some broadheads. I have a stand set up in a most beautiful spot that I can't wait to sit in. I've seen lots of deer near it and sign all over the place. Its a win win for me. Just hope I get the shot and finish it off. Best of luck to everyone and thanks for helping me through the past 3 days! See you tomorrow for the stories!
Good luck guys! Im so bent that I have to work...I will be hoping for you all!
Jamie can ya do a evening sit? Izzy, I know that is tough for ya!! I will be hunting in the evening in a bottom out of the wind. I killed a 100" 8 pt. in there last year and never sit it before November but I have a feeling, so if the wind is good, I will be in there. I just got back a long lost friend, a 7 Lakes LB that Bob Brown bought from me years ago and I just got it back two days ago. I have it tuned and ready to go!! I hope we all enjoy our first day!! Good Luck boys!! Shawn
Good luck and shoot straight gentlemen(and ladies),I just have to double check my lumbar pac for all the goodies, sounds like it's going to be a nice day in Western N.Y. tomorrow. Gerald
Shawn,
Make some meat with it.
Bob
At work right now. Get out 7:30 this morning then to bed for a few hours. Will be out with the ML this weekend then heading south to bowhunt Monday & Tuesday. Good luck to all.
Just got back from the AM hunt. Overall pretty successful. I set out of my house at 0545 and start the walk in the dark. I start nearing an area that Ive been scouting with plenty of sign at about 0640. I hear a very near coyote, followed by a full orchestra of howls that send a chill up my spine. I decided to hold what I got at that location for a bit. After I no longer hear the pack I continue the move to my spot right behind a rock fence. Im in place by 0700
At 0720 I was within 40 yards from 4 mature does that came from right where I had walked through. Everyone of them offered me a broadside shot. I observed them for about 10 minutes and was praying that they would move closer.
The wind was howling in all directions and the closer doe, spots something out of place or smells something. Her and I get into a stare down and in one quick blow, they are all gone.
Im very happy with this mornings hunt. I'll be heading back this evening.
Good luck to all the others out today.
I saw three small bucks this morning...beautiful morning...life is good!!
You should talk to your wildlife management agency. There is no biological reason for the opening of deer season to be delayed so long. When I arrived in KY as the wildlife director in 1995 the season opened on October 1st. Now it opens on the first Saturday in September. Some complain that September is too hot. On opening day this year the morning temperature was 53 degrees. In fact, every morning since the season opened has been very comfortable.
Once the fawns have lost most of their spots (by late August), they are fine without the doe.
Sometimes agencies get stuck in the past until sportsmen wake em up.
I'm not suggesting your season start the first of Septembrer but the 3rd week of September or October 1st would be fine and greatly increase hunter recreation days with no threat to the deer herd.
I had a fat doe jump the string on me this morning. I had to stop here from walking with a little grunt so she was alert on the shot.. just caught the top of her back, took off some hair but she's fine. Happy it wasn't a bad hit, just wish I could have connected with a good shot. One more very smart doe in the woods of wny now.
Went out this afternoon. Other than some heavy wind gusts, it was a gorgeous sit. I got winded at about 5:30 while in my popup blind and when I checked there were 8 deer downwind in the field right behind me at about 50 yards. I was going to set a stand on the treeline where they were but couldn't settle on a tree. Guess what I'm doing tomorrow.
Hunting? good luck!
Did not sit this morning, I believe most morning sits do more harm than good where I hunt! Sat last night and had one 2.5 year old and one 3.5 year old within 30 yards. I also saw 2 does and a fawn. As it was getting dark I had a nice 7pt. coming and I grunted to him at 40 yards, my mistake. He came in but took his time and by the time he got to me it was too darkto shoot, 15 yards for 10 minutes. He fed off and I snuck out of there, if I get the right wind I will be in there today but in a stand that every deer I saw walked within 10 yards of. Hoping for NW wind again, I believe these bucks will be visiting this same area as it is rich in apple trees and I have three stands that overlook them!! Best of Luck!! Shawn
Is that the stand in the bottom that I hunted Shawn? Pretty good spot......
David
David, no about 100 yards from there. I killed 3 bucks in there last year. All 3.5 year olds and and all within 100 yards of each other, two from the same tree and the second one fell in the others gut pile. No wind at all here yet so if it don't pick up I will not be able to hunt it. This is right on the edge of bedding and unless it is real windy I don't go in there only during the rut. The wind covers my movement and I can sneak in and get set up! Shawn
Wow I missed opening day!! If I dont get some serious stuff done, I may miss this afternoon too! Gotta get my gear rerady, sharpen my BH's, and I still have to remove two treestands from a "former" friends property....
I hope you guys are taking pictures and stuff so that those of us with little or no time to hunt can live vicariously!!
Hunted opening morning and had a momma and her two little ones at 15 yards and standing nicely. The two young were good sized and certainly would survive without mom. I just couldn't bring myself to loose an arrow. Maybe later. Could be Shawn switched my thinking. He would've shot one of the little ones because it only takes out one deer and when you take the doe you take out 3.
Couldn't hunt the afternoon due to finishing some siding on the house and a church event that my wife felt my attendance with her was important. I don't argue that point. I never hunt on Sunday as that is our "family" day. We go to church in the AM and then spend the rest of the day together. I'll be back out in the morning before work. I had good luck and took 3 before work last year. I'm hoping the luck holds.
Good luck everyone and let's see the hero pictures.
Another beeeautiful afternoon sitting. Thinking the wind kept the deer quiet today. Tomorrow I try a different view.
A slow start for me so far.No sightings sat am.Went out sat evening and saw 4 does and fawns.Too far for sure.My good friend and hunting bud shot a real nice doe with his wheel bow so we had a blood trail to tend to followed by a challenging drag.Saw two fawns this am .I am going to an unmolested spot behind our home after work tommorow.I have killed at least one deer a year in this patch 17 of the 21 years I have lived here. Not all with traditional gear, but quite a few.Plenty of time Brothers.Good Luck.Glen
First sit this afternoon. Saw ten turkeys, about 35 yards.
Had a spike at 5 yards broadside just before dark. Drew, anchored, picked a spot and eased down. He was enjoying acorns way too much. LOL.

Beautiful morning, but very little deer movement. Nothing offered a shot. Only sat until 8 AM and then headed off to work. The sun lit tree on the right is an apple tree. I don't think they are hitting the apples real hard yet due to all the acorns.
Neat Pic Terry however, the arrow is in the wrong spot and the wrong color ;) :readit:
I'm glad people are seeing deer. That makes things a little more exciting!
Look at all the NYers.. good luck fellas.. only another week left in SZ archery before the gunners start shootin' up th woods. www.nyantler-outdoors.com (http://www.nyantler-outdoors.com)
