Title: cutting carbon shafts
Post by: Andy Cooper on October 11, 2010, 08:09:00 PM
How do y'all cut your carbon shafts to length? What types of saws will work?

I have an Easton saw... 5000 rpm.  Although I've heard folks say you "have to have" a 8000 rpm saw... I've never had a problem cutting shafts.

David

P.S. I've cut Gold Tips and Carbon Express shafts.

I have one of these see link below tough to beat the price. I have cut every kind of shaft with it no problems.

I also have the harbor freight chopsaw.  You have to buy the blades to cut carbons with when you order it cause it comes with a wood cutting blade on it.

I clamp them to my bench and use a dremmel with a cutoff wheel. It works great. If I need to square it up after the cut I just clamp a block of wood to the table of my disc sander and use it as a guide to make sure  the shaft is perpendicular to the sanding disc. Just tap it on the spinning disc once or twice and its all squared up..

I made a simple jig with a piece of aluminum angle and use my Moto tool. Does a great job!

I use a Harbor Freight mini chop saw, mounted it on a board and made a adjustable stop for repeatable cuts.

I snug my dremel to the bench with a 2 hole conduit strap, works like a champ.

Made from scrap lumber laying around. Crude, but works like a charm!

Just be careful with breathing the dust, if you do a lot of cutting, carbon dust is NASTY stuff to get in your lungs. Ask your doc!
I use an Apple cutoff saw with a HEPA vaccuum set up to suck up the dust when I'm cutting a lot.
I like the Dremmel set though!

There is a thread on this where the poster just clamps a Dremel down to a bench, clamps a block of 2x4 with a field point in it and uses that.  I have tried it with very good results.  No need to buy a saw if you have a Dremel (or want one) unless you are going to cut lots and lots of arrows.

mini cut-off saw from Harbor Freight. Use an abrasion wheel on it.

free hand with a dremel tool!!  I cut a bit shy of the line and then get precise with the little chamfer stone that comes with axis shafts!!

i built a jig stand for a dremel with carbide wheel but that just became another dedicated machine in a shop with too many of them already.

so now i just mark the length on the shaft (any shaft material) with a sharp pencil and then free hand cut off the excess with a carbide dremel, making sure to leave 1/8" proud of the mark.  i square up on a 6" bench sander loaded with 120 grit gold 3m.  for carbons, i always slow-set epoxy in the insert and make sure the epoxy smears 1/4" above the cut line, to "soak" the cut end well.

I use an apple pro with dust collector to cut my carbons.
