Title: Unusual White and Burr acorns!
Post by: Bob B. on October 11, 2010, 12:08:00 PM
Well, it is like walking on marbles in the woods - so many mast crops on the ground.  I have noticed the deer are not moving far at all, just staying in thick cover near water and eating like crazy.  So, I tried some.  Usually a white acorn, although less bitter than a red, is still tough to eat, kinda like alumn.  Anyway, this year they are ok to me.  Not too bitter at all, with a real nutty ( almost hickery ) kinda taste.  So, I guess that is why they are just pounding the acorns.

Just an observation from South West Wisconsin.

Time to up your game and close the distance to knife range on em.  Ground pounding sounds like the best option to close in for a kill.

My best luck has been slow, walk, sit for an hour, slow walk, sit again, always keeping in the mid to near tops of ridges of good mature white oaks stands ... using my gillie of course.
