My Red Wing Hunter is dead quiet but those short limbs fling the arrows so fast that they whistle or hiss. Why are the arrows so noisy? If I take a shot, they won't jump the string but they might jump the arrow. They are Easton Camo light 2016 with a 125 3 blade head and 5.5 inch 3 fletch feathers. They don't make as much noise out of my other bows.
How do you quiet down an arrow?
Thanks
sam :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:
Do they whistle with field points or just with broadheads?
It might be the broadhead and not the arrow.
Field points. I only shot the broadheads a few times to test them out before I sharpened them and I don't remember the noise with them. I can try one again tomorrow. But field points for sure. Could it be when the points get loose?
sam
Could be the shape of feather and the hight.Had the same problem with 5"Shield cut feathers , went to 4" shield now dead quiet.I also hear parabolic cut feathers are quieter.
If they are 5.5" high parabolic they are just like mine that I fletched up last week and you can hear the feathers all the way down. mine are really high with a hard right helical and they are very loud!! Im gonna strip them and refletch because I know these old slickheads around here will duck em!!
Instead of taking them off trim them some .RC
Good idea, will give it a try.
I think I'll try that too. Mine are full 5.5 feathers and I just had a doe duck mine this AM. Perfect shot too but she ducked under it and off she went. I have a feeling that the whole season will be like that unless I trim them. The broadheads are quieter btw. Still noisy however.
Thanks guys
sam
I just had some 4" feathers put on my 2018's and I noticed the difference. I have 5" on my GT 5575's and a little louder. I will say the 2018's weigh in at 565 grains with 4" feathers vs 535 grains with 5" feathers on my GT 5575's. The heavier arrow with the 4" feathers may be the difference.
Do you think the noise is from the feathers?
The wind gods..
This may sound weird but put a little Vaseline on your broadhead and see if that helps. And cut the rear tip off on an angle 1/4 inch the high back fletching and see if that helps.
LOL mamba.
I have vaseline on the broadhed. So cut the rear tip off the fletch to make it like a banana or parabolic fletch?
Makes sense. thanks
None of my 5.5 shields make a whistle,But I did burn my own traditional style that were higher in the back and they whistled.I just took the corner of the back of so what I cut off looked like a small triangle.that lowers the tail end,it should help
OK Trimmed the trailing tips off the 5.5 shields and they still whistle. About the same. I also reduced the feather on another shaft and still whistles. Wondering if it's just the feather? I'm going to fletch one of these shafts with a different feather and see if it still whistles.
sam
How smooth is the transition from the shaft to the feather? If it's an abrupt bump, it'll make noise. Try to create a smooth transition with some fletchtite.
It was not to smooth looper. I sanded it and used fletchtite to make it smooth. I guess it can be better.
sam
Did smoothing the transition make a difference?
I chop my own 4.750" shield feathers, didn't notice any whistle or sizzle with factory feathers, but when I fletched some with wild turkey feathers I got sizzling goin on. I don't know why natural wild feathers would make that much difference, if anything you would think they would be better?
depends on the bow and speed (at least that's what I think) I have a longbow that will shoot a modified low profile banana but if I shoot it from a Predator recurve she's loud - these are 4 7/8". I can shoot a 5" parabolic from recurve - and 4" 4 fletch - lower profile=less noise. I have also shot high back banana and they sound like a helicopter.
Have a report on this. I took the 5.5 shields off and shot bareshaft. Quiet
Re fletched with 4" shields and straight fletch and what do you know -- dead quiet.
It's the 5.5 shield feathers with the curved fletch that did it.
Nice when you shoot target - not nice when you hunt deer.
Keep it in mind guys and thanks for all the help

This thread was a real plasure to read! Thank you for all the suggestions!
cheers
First thing I noticed when i shot some arrows I fletched with 5.5 " feathers was the 'hiss' of the arrow all the way to the target, compared to 5 inch they were really noisy. Whether this can be heard in front of the arrow I dont know.
Feathers were parabolics and shot from quite a fast 65lb bow.
I currently shoot 5" but the next ones will be 4" to try and eliminate more noise and drag.
Wolfkiss, it's the high profile rather than the length that causes the noise. Try trimming the height to quieten them down.
SEMO, were your natural turkey feathers from a mature bird, or a jake? I found jake feathers to be noisy.
I'll give that a try, save buying new feathers,
Thanks,
Andy.

That I believe was exactly the problem. My neighbor gave me the wing feathers off his bird he got a few weeks ago and it was a young turkey. I don't know if it was a hen or a jake, but the feathers were small and thinner than a mature gobbler or a hen and mine not only hissed, but almost like a high pitched scream. I stripped them the other night and re-fletched one with 4.5" parabolic white fethers, the arrow is completely silent now. Lesson learned, don't fletch with young bird feathers.
My broadheads still have a little hiss, but not real bad and there's not much I can do about that except go to a 2 blade solid and I don't really want to go that route. I'll stick with my 3 blade heads cause I've got 12 of them and I'm not going to switch right in the middle of bow season, besides the BH's shoot great so I would like to stick with them. Hopefully the deer I shoot at won't duck my arrow? I tend to shoot a bit low anyway so if it does try to duck, then maybe it will drop right into it?
Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks Dave. It's always fun to talk trad archery with you guys. We have a lot to share.
Anyway, I tried to trim the full shield feathers but that did little good for me. The 4" feathers were the big difference.
Do the deer hear them? I had 2 duck so far. I think so. I'm shooting low from now on too, but my 4" feathers will be tested next shot I take. If they don't duck, guess what?
I'll keep you guys posted
Thanks and good luck
