Has anybody shipped a longbow to Australia? If so, what did it cost you and how did you ship it??? I've had an inquiry and have no idea about such things.
ask Ben kleinig he would have an idea
I sent a few down there. It didn't seem much more than sending them domestic. They were small bows though.
I sent a longbow to Australia. I put it in a PVC pipe and sent it with the US Postal Service. It was around $50-$75 if I remember correctly and was only 5 or 6 days in transit.
UPS, FedEx and DHL were all several hundred dollars because of the length.
You can't ship anything longer then 60" max length International through USPS.If it is longer you have to use another shipper like UPS and will cost approximately $150.Thats what I was told a few years ago to ship to Australia.I shipped a 70" Hill to France about 3 years ago and it cost $122.50,he recieved it in 6 days safe and sound.
I shipped a recurve to OZ a few years ago. It didn't make the length requirement for USPS so I had to ship it Fed Ex, and it cost around $175.00, as I recall.
I don't know how those guys afford bows from the U.S. On top of the exhorbitant shipping, they have to pay an import duty, on top of the price of the bow.
I don't know if it helped my buyer, but I marked the Customs form used sporting equipment.
Sent my last anything via UPS. They about destroyed a longbow I shipped a few weeks ago in heavy PVC tube. 8-10 inches missing from the top of the tube and a big hole in the bottom--and they left it on the guys porch that way. "What can brown do to you?" should be their ad slogan.
yup yup yup!! it is even expencive to ship em to NZ if its over 60" thats why i love short bows. just buying one is expencive what with the exchange rate an all. and aussie is only a 3hour flight. and a week in a ship. hey scattershot you should try sending one down here if ya think aussie is expencive as we are the last bit of dirt before the south pole.
The shipping costs vary according to what sort of deals a bowyer has with shipping companies, or whether a seller gets lucky with an overlength bow being accepted by UPS and then by Australia Post. There are stories where people got lucky with the latter, and the bow made it through cheaply. Howard Hill Archery has one of the best shipping deals for longbows to Australia, via FedEx, at US$115. Black Widow uses UPS at US$95. These are super low shipping prices, and I've had good luck with both these companies. Other bowyers or private sellers don't have the same deal, so shipping can be around US$220 via either FedEx or UPS. I'm talking about one-piece bows, obviously. I've learned not to worry too much about shipping costs for a good bow that I really fancy, and the cost of shipping is soon forgotten, anyway, when the bow makes a memory. While I'm on the topic, for awhile I thought that 52" recurves like the Kodiak Magnum could be made to fit the requirements for UPS for a cost of around US$60; however, I was wrong; it just so happens that I got lucky with them accepting a couple.
I've shipped to Australia and New Zealand and both were cheaper than one I shipped to Texas.
Go figure!
God bless,Mudd
BTW: The bow I shipped to Australia was a 72" ELB that was won in the St. Jude Auction.
i had three rivers send a fire piston to JeffB in new zealand.it cost 30 dollars.i can only imagine what it would cost to send a bow.it was worth the cost though,i got a sweet quiver that i almost use daily.thanks Jeff, steve
I shipped a three piece (Prairie Nomad)longbow to Australia in May and it cost $57.60 plus $9.40 for insurance via USPS Priority Mail. With a three piece, I had no problem staying under length though. A one piece would be a problem, I would guess.
Shipped a 62" longbow to Oz two months ago using USPS. It cost $57+change and took 8 days to get there. Used PVC pipe. There is a length+circumference requirement so check with your PO.
I've bought bows from Friend and RobHood off here.
Both where T/D recurves and where roughly around the $60 mark for shipping. (guys if your reading I'm loving them both still :) )
As Ben said no point in sweating the postage cost for something that will give so many hours of pleasure.
But what does tick me off is that Scattershot is correct.
Here in Australia we have to pay an import tariff on any and all goods over $1000 AUD.
Even if it is a present or 2nd hand.
On a $1100 bow it is about $240. But worse than that is it delayed my bow delivery about 15 days!!
$52.00 plus insurance this morning to Oz.. 6-7 days Priority mail...
One piece recurve bow.. Box was just under 60"..
