Hey all,
I just bought my first bow!! It's a York Thunderbolt Recurve 54" 47#@28. I wanted to get something much heavier, but this one fits my budget. I'm really excited about learning and getting back to the basics with hunting.
My bow is naked right now. Since this is my first bow, I am hoping to get some advice from anybody and everybody. I'll need to get a few strings, but don't know where to start with sizing them or which ones to steer clear of. My bow is old, so I know I can't use any modern strings. I read a number of posts on here aimed at newbies that made the differences perfectly clear. :)
Should I reach out to some of the site sponsors that make custom strings and have some made or are there some commercial strings that I can use for now?
Also, before anybody feels they need to say something, I won't be using my legs to string my bow. :) I'll do it the proper way just like Arnold did in Predator - over my shoulders. haha Just kidding - Bow stringer all the way.
Thanks everybody!
check out 3riversarchery.com it will have the charts you need to get the right string. or you can give them a call and they can fix you up with whatever you need.
I would get a 12 strand B-50 or B-55 for that pundage. One of the sponsers would be a good choice. The strings made from that material choice are not that expensive.
Tradgang member LBR (Champion bowstrings) makes a great B-55 string, perfect really
Thanks for the suggestions! Once I get her strung up, I'll start shooting at targets and working on some fundamentals.
Again, any direction that you all can give is very welcomed!
If this is your first bow, 47# is plenty. B50 12 strand would be good and cost around 10 bucks.
Oh yeah, get some good string wax. It will make a big difference if you keep it waxed.
All of the sponsors that make strings are top-notch. They can advise you on what you need also. I get mine from Josh (Oliverstacy). Check out the Sponsors Classifieds.
Good luck with the new bow, and Welcome!
Thanks everybody!
I'll have to look up string wax. I saw that mentioned in an article I read, but have to look it up specifically. Thanks!! The reason I wanted a heavier bow is because I'm not a big guy, but I'm crazy strong. 50# was easy for me to draw, so 47# will be great to learn form and technique with. At least that's my thought.
A member PMed me and offered to make me a string!! What brought me here was a really nice guy that I met in Cabela's. He told me how nice everybody is on the site and how incredibly helpful it is since most archers don't know anything about traditional archery. Looks like he was spot on!
You should start with 2 B50 Dacron strings, AMO 54".
Install some Catwhiskers and 2 nock points to start with.
