Title: WHY SHOOT A DOE ?????
Post by: getstonedprimitivebowhunt on October 05, 2010, 08:18:00 PM
...because I think a old mature doe with years behind it is one of the toughest deer to kill ..She's way smarter that any buck...and is a true trophy to take with trad equipment (or any gear) ...HUNT DOE'S

Plus .. antlers are only good to stir the soup !!!

Because several places where I hunt have habitat damage from too many deer.

Overbrowsing is a real problem on my mothers property.

Killing doe's does way more for controling the deer population than killing a buck.

Big does are smart.  If she has two fawns with her come hunting season, she is likely at least two and half years old. So she had to be smart enough to keep herself alive for at least a year and half to be bred once. Six more months of avoiding predators, bows, and guns in order to give birth. And then 6 months of not only looking out for her own hide, but also that of her fawns.  I think we've all been busted by many more does than bucks.

Because it is DEER season, not just BUCK season with a bow...
If I had a 10pt buck, and a fat doe, both at 10 yards broadside..I'd take the doe.
I am not hunting to prove anything, as if killing a horned deer proves anything, I love to hunt, and I love to eat venison...
and the doe eats so much better...

I find the meat from a DOE is way better in taste then a buck. Also it is best to help keep a deer herd Healthier by taking out a few of the Old DOEs.

Food, plain & simple.
I've taken a few Bucks in the past, nice ones too but to me the antlers are a plus, I'm out there to take venison for my family & with many areas around here where the populations are up to 40:1 Does to Buck ratio it makes sence to help thin the heard for a much better deer in the long run.

They are smart and quite a trophy and it is your tag and you can shoot whatever you want that's your business but for a healthy heard if you shoot the young does to keep the population under control and they eat real good. The young  and old does are going to both reproduce but the old does will produce a more healthy offspring which helps have a healthy heard which means bigger healthier young does and bucks. All these small scrub bucks is sign of over populated heard and their mother was a yearling doe.

They are easy to kill. You just need to be there when they are. Here is one that is 10 yards from one of my Double Bull blinds. Obviously I wasn't in it at the time.

i've never bought into the old doe is smarter than the buck nonsence. if this were true alot more people would have wall hanger bucks. sure a 1.5 year old buck is an idiot and occasionally you can blunder into a rut crazed big one doing something stupid. but i kill big does by the dozen every year. i work very hard just for 1 or 2 chances at mature bucks every year.

Generally speaking a Doe is going to have less fat on her than a older Buck. At least this is my experence from Processing my own over the past several years. Which makes the Meat much easier to process without getting the Fat in the meat, It you have ever Bit in to some Ground Deer that has to much fat in it then you will know why Does taste Better.

Fred Hill I agree. I take my 5 allowed does every year to improve the quality of the herd and wish they would increase this limit.  I also only try to take the big mature ones cause I believe in allowing all deer to reach their full potential.  I have taken one mature buck in the last 3 years cause they just dont mess up very often.  Now I pass on 4 year olds and could take a few of them every year but to take that old sag daddy is another story.  They always know when something aint right.  But I do wish there were more hunters in our area like you guys who would shoot does.

I got busted by an old matriarch on Saturday. Had 6 does (2 fawns) within 15 yards and closer but she didn't like my blind and kept looking and moving and stirring the others up. I wanted to take a shot at her but she hardly every turned to the side always facing me and kept moving. In about 5 mins they all left. I have to admit that I was catching a nap when they arrived and probably made some noise when I woke up. The others just kept eating. 2 fawns were laying on the ground. But she knew. They are tough to hunt. She was big and would have really given a good start to filling the freezer.

Because I actually drew a doe tag this year . Buck only in most of my state,I miss the days of either sex tags.  :readit:  One other one I like to mentions is the cow elk, them mommas are smarter than most bulls. They are the eye's and ears of the bulls. 15 cows is 30 eyes looking around. Get a bull by it's self they are much easier to hunt I think. The mom's fight of predators all season from their young it gets them educated.

1.Hunting does is great recreation. I'm "caught" in the stand more often by an adult doe by bucks every season.  A doe with the job of looking out for herself and her fawns is a pretty wary beast!

2. Does are just as good to eat as bucks.

3. Every deer hunter shoot try to keep the herd in proper gender balance by killing at least as many does as bucks, except in the rare case where you are trying to grow the herd.

4. If you are a buck hunter and would like to keep your button bucks (fawns) in the area, killing the doe before she runs him off (nature's way of dispersing the gene pool) is a good way to keep him in the neighborhood (research proven).

5. When I've decided I'm going to try to shoot a deer (hope to get a shot in other words) I get nervous -- buck or doe.  If its a small buck that I know I'll not shoot at, I barely get nervous at all. I believe, I settle down a bit after killing a doe or two before the hoped for old buck comes along.  The ideal season for me is to kill 1-2 does early. Then the buck comes along that I want to shoot.

I have friends that are sexist. They think there is no honor in killing a doe???  Can you believe that!

Around here all our gun seasons are buck only except for a couple of days when you can shoot does . . . but bow season is either or. The does make it through gun seasons pretty easily but the bucks don't live long enough to gather as much intelligence . . . the does are WAY more alert and have basically been their and done that with most set ups!

To me they are the real trophies!

I hunt small tracks of land around housing developments. I have a doe on my place that I call spastic, because 1 scant molecule of human scent and she well, goes SPASTIC . If it were true that does were smarter here in Kansas, I would have taken several bucks over 180 inches.  If I had unlimited tags I would take several old mature does every year.  The ones with the sway back and pot belly.  The ones we leave alone so that when grandpa comes, it eases his mind and once in a while he screws up. Instead I only get to take 5 does and most of them have been short on teeth!  It is still too bad that more people do not harvest does here though cause the few of us that do can not keep up with the ones who WONT.

In Ohio, you can take many does (how many depends on where you can hunt) but you don't need to take one before you take a buck.

I don't know if I want my ability to take a buck taken away from me. I agree with you tho. I looked over the responses and only a few were from Michigan, where we now have unlimited doe tags, so to speak. You can buy no more than 5 doe tags a day.

5 tags a day. Most of Michigan's freezer's should be full by December!
