...because I think a old mature doe with years behind it is one of the toughest deer to kill ..She's way smarter that any buck...and is a true trophy to take with trad equipment (or any gear) ...HUNT DOE'S
Plus .. antlers are only good to stir the soup !!!
-
cause i like to eat!
-
Because several places where I hunt have habitat damage from too many deer.
Overbrowsing is a real problem on my mothers property.
Killing doe's does way more for controling the deer population than killing a buck.
-
i agree...taking an old monarch doe is a difficult challenge!
-
I would just hate to have someone think I was a Male Chauvinist :)
-
........and they taste great!!!!
-
Big does are smart. If she has two fawns with her come hunting season, she is likely at least two and half years old. So she had to be smart enough to keep herself alive for at least a year and half to be bred once. Six more months of avoiding predators, bows, and guns in order to give birth. And then 6 months of not only looking out for her own hide, but also that of her fawns. I think we've all been busted by many more does than bucks.
-
Because "I" bought the tag !!! When someone else starts paying for my tag . THEY can tell me what to shoot ;) Bill
-
Indeed they are tough. Been busted a few times o far this year. Had 3 at less than 5 yards last night. Couldn't close the deal.......
James
-
Why shoot them? Because they run too fast to club'em into submission!
-
I like shooting does, because I like to eat.
-
Cause we got 50 does to every buck in the public area I'm in. And they taste so good !
-
Because I can
-
I like them with really BIG BUTTS!!!
YUMMM
chris <><
-
Because it is DEER season, not just BUCK season with a bow...
If I had a 10pt buck, and a fat doe, both at 10 yards broadside..I'd take the doe.
I am not hunting to prove anything, as if killing a horned deer proves anything, I love to hunt, and I love to eat venison...
and the doe eats so much better...
-
Because I can't get them to jump onto the arrow. :biglaugh:
-
YOU are all lucky , the government in Mexico thinks that if we don't kill does we will have more bucks, we have 8 to 1 ratio on does per buck and that is a lot
we don't have doe permits and we do have bucks
they think they are smart
-
I find the meat from a DOE is way better in taste then a buck. Also it is best to help keep a deer herd Healthier by taking out a few of the Old DOEs.
-
You must shoot them to go with the onions and garlic that are fry'n in the cast iron skillet. Or to keep the veggies company that are on the kabobs on the grill. :goldtooth:

This is why Mexico doesn't have Big rack bucks. When a Government does things the wrong way it hurts Us all as Hunters.
Only if Mexico could do this like some of the Record States DNR, They would have Monster Bucks. I Mean the temps down there are little better then Texas and Texas has some monsters.
-
They are tasty!
-
Because it is legal and its a deer.
-
because they taste so darn good and much more plentiful than bucks around here.
-
because they come within range
-
Little Rock AFB has started a doe before buck policy for flight safety, better wildlife management and to help with the tick problem. A nice doe sure is good eating too.
-
MEAT!
Keeping the faith
Magnus
-
because they fit so well between the mashed taters, gravy and the cathead biscuits.
-
Cuz it is illegal to hunt em with a knife.
-
Like the commercial says......Frank's Hot Sauce...........I put that &%$# on everything!
-
I really like the ~thump~ when the arrow hits them- that's why.

I dont know about this statement.I sure belief the ecperience of a hunter like getstoneprimitive, but around here i would say old does and old bucks are equally smart. The difference being that the bucks hormons erase his smartness when they jump in.
Kinda like humans aint it? ;)
-
Like a friend told me one time, "If God didn't intend for me to shoot does, he wouldn't have made them out of meat."
-
Food, plain & simple.
I've taken a few Bucks in the past, nice ones too but to me the antlers are a plus, I'm out there to take venison for my family & with many areas around here where the populations are up to 40:1 Does to Buck ratio it makes sence to help thin the heard for a much better deer in the long run.
-
My family prefers the meat of does over bucks, I can't tell the difference except with rutting bucks.

Where I live the deer are over populated. And I do agree they taste good.
-
It's hard to say no to the ladies :bigsmyl:
-
Saumensch..Yep them bucks are smart.... But here in Ohio...the "OLD" Ladies got it over the Boys..... You know how us guys get when were .."alooking" lol !
-
"Why Shoot A Doe?" Cause I have no interest in a deer with Drag Handles! That's why. :p
... mike ...
-
> WHY SHOOT A DOE ?????
Cause they are made of meat !!!!!
:D
-
Because I've never heard s'ghetti noodles being sexist...OR taters and onions, or bell peppers, or the grumblin' in my tummy!!!
'Sides; you ever try to stew an antler??
-
They are smart and quite a trophy and it is your tag and you can shoot whatever you want that's your business but for a healthy heard if you shoot the young does to keep the population under control and they eat real good. The young and old does are going to both reproduce but the old does will produce a more healthy offspring which helps have a healthy heard which means bigger healthier young does and bucks. All these small scrub bucks is sign of over populated heard and their mother was a yearling doe.
-
Chili, stew, K-bobs, roasts, venison parm, .....
-
Because you only have so much food and bedding on your hunting grounds and if the does get it the bucks don't. Shoot 'em.
-
They are easy to kill. You just need to be there when they are. Here is one that is 10 yards from one of my Double Bull blinds. Obviously I wasn't in it at the time.

i've never bought into the old doe is smarter than the buck nonsence. if this were true alot more people would have wall hanger bucks. sure a 1.5 year old buck is an idiot and occasionally you can blunder into a rut crazed big one doing something stupid. but i kill big does by the dozen every year. i work very hard just for 1 or 2 chances at mature bucks every year.
-
because all venison tastes better than tag soup.....
-
Generally speaking a Doe is going to have less fat on her than a older Buck. At least this is my experence from Processing my own over the past several years. Which makes the Meat much easier to process without getting the Fat in the meat, It you have ever Bit in to some Ground Deer that has to much fat in it then you will know why Does taste Better.
-
Fred Hill I agree. I take my 5 allowed does every year to improve the quality of the herd and wish they would increase this limit. I also only try to take the big mature ones cause I believe in allowing all deer to reach their full potential. I have taken one mature buck in the last 3 years cause they just dont mess up very often. Now I pass on 4 year olds and could take a few of them every year but to take that old sag daddy is another story. They always know when something aint right. But I do wish there were more hunters in our area like you guys who would shoot does.
-
...I don't mix up smart ..with skiddish ! Plus I'm not talking about your ordinary mature doe..I'm talking about that 6-to 8 year old doe.. They don't make mistakes as much as a huge buck in rut. Most don't live that long... Hmmmm
-
Backstraps!
-
I read it all,So your tellen me we are supposed to shoot the ones with the pointy things on their heads! :dunno:
-
I got busted by an old matriarch on Saturday. Had 6 does (2 fawns) within 15 yards and closer but she didn't like my blind and kept looking and moving and stirring the others up. I wanted to take a shot at her but she hardly every turned to the side always facing me and kept moving. In about 5 mins they all left. I have to admit that I was catching a nap when they arrived and probably made some noise when I woke up. The others just kept eating. 2 fawns were laying on the ground. But she knew. They are tough to hunt. She was big and would have really given a good start to filling the freezer.

Cause antlers are pretty to look at but they don't taste very good and meat from a doe is better tasting than tag soup just as Bob said.
-
Because I actually drew a doe tag this year . Buck only in most of my state,I miss the days of either sex tags. :readit: One other one I like to mentions is the cow elk, them mommas are smarter than most bulls. They are the eye's and ears of the bulls. 15 cows is 30 eyes looking around. Get a bull by it's self they are much easier to hunt I think. The mom's fight of predators all season from their young it gets them educated.
-
i'll shoot either one given the chance.i hunt for the hunt, not the trophy.i just like being out in nature.you can't eat the horns and i don't have the wall space for a deer head.btw does taste great, steve
-
1.Hunting does is great recreation. I'm "caught" in the stand more often by an adult doe by bucks every season. A doe with the job of looking out for herself and her fawns is a pretty wary beast!
2. Does are just as good to eat as bucks.
3. Every deer hunter shoot try to keep the herd in proper gender balance by killing at least as many does as bucks, except in the rare case where you are trying to grow the herd.
4. If you are a buck hunter and would like to keep your button bucks (fawns) in the area, killing the doe before she runs him off (nature's way of dispersing the gene pool) is a good way to keep him in the neighborhood (research proven).
5. When I've decided I'm going to try to shoot a deer (hope to get a shot in other words) I get nervous -- buck or doe. If its a small buck that I know I'll not shoot at, I barely get nervous at all. I believe, I settle down a bit after killing a doe or two before the hoped for old buck comes along. The ideal season for me is to kill 1-2 does early. Then the buck comes along that I want to shoot.
-
I have friends that are sexist. They think there is no honor in killing a doe??? Can you believe that!
Around here all our gun seasons are buck only except for a couple of days when you can shoot does . . . but bow season is either or. The does make it through gun seasons pretty easily but the bucks don't live long enough to gather as much intelligence . . . the does are WAY more alert and have basically been their and done that with most set ups!
To me they are the real trophies!
-
Just imagine what would happen if nobody ever shot one. It would not be a pretty sight.
-
Comes down to this...my mom's first words to me when I brought home my first deer (a 170# dressed basket 5pt)
"Why did you shoot one with horns? The other ones taste better."
Momma knows best.
-
Because I can.
-
Not picky, makes good sense, and it is still hunting.
-
I hunt small tracks of land around housing developments. I have a doe on my place that I call spastic, because 1 scant molecule of human scent and she well, goes SPASTIC . We have been trying to take her out of the gene pool for 3 years and cannot make it happen . A real trophy IMO! Plus they sometimes come close enough :)
-
You hunt Bucks for trophy's, hunt Does for eating, nothing better, In my book. R.W.
-
Because they have ruined my day on so many occasions with their blowing.
-
Why only shoot "a" doe when I've got unlimited doe tags?
:knothead:
-
If it were true that does were smarter here in Kansas, I would have taken several bucks over 180 inches. If I had unlimited tags I would take several old mature does every year. The ones with the sway back and pot belly. The ones we leave alone so that when grandpa comes, it eases his mind and once in a while he screws up. Instead I only get to take 5 does and most of them have been short on teeth! It is still too bad that more people do not harvest does here though cause the few of us that do can not keep up with the ones who WONT.
-
Here in Jersey early season if you want to be able to shoot a Buck you have to wack a doe first. :readit: :saywhat: :knothead: I had my chance didn't take it. :banghead:
-
A good doe hunter makes a great buck hunter!!
Kennyb
-
I agree, Does are much better table fare! Yum!
-
Why not?
-
I'll shoot ANY legal deer right now... freezer is getting empty!
-
IMO Michigan should adopt the policy of hunters must take a doe first before being allowed to draw a buck tag.....Something like Ohio would be nice.
-

In Ohio, you can take many does (how many depends on where you can hunt) but you don't need to take one before you take a buck.

I don't know if I want my ability to take a buck taken away from me. I agree with you tho. I looked over the responses and only a few were from Michigan, where we now have unlimited doe tags, so to speak. You can buy no more than 5 doe tags a day.
5 tags a day. Most of Michigan's freezer's should be full by December!
But not before the rut....
-
Cause I can get tags to shoot 3 does for the same price as shooting one buck.
I should be able to shoot my first one tomorrow.
DDave
-
You have to, its deer management to control the numbers and restore the balance.
Last night my stepson and I saw 15.
-
They taste good!
-
Where I'm going to hunt, public land, they require I shoot a doe first.
-Jeremy :coffee:
