Title: Never seen this on arrows .....
Post by: LookMomNoSights on October 03, 2010, 08:54:00 PM
I picked up some older arrows not long ago....yard sale,  $1 for all 4 of them.  Anyway,  looking at the arrows as of late, I noticed something strange - 1 of the arrows has alot going on ....a continuos taper from 23/64 at the point to 5/16 at the nock.  The arrow is straight fletched and (this is the wierd part, to me!) these fletches are in a channel that was cut or routed into the shaft!  Ive never seen this before!  Was this common in arrows of yesterday?  The arrow seems old but,  is very well made.

They are from the 1950's. Don't remember much about them except that for a while they were being made. Never  had one in my  hand though.

I have seen them before but cant remember the name of them. The channels were supposed to be to let the blood out in the event that the arrow did not completely pass through. In more recent years thay were also produced in aluminum but they didnt last very long on the market I guess they just didnt catch on.

I remember the aluminums .....those were called Xcalibers.  A cross cut section of that shaft would reveal an "X",  as 4 "stiffening" channels ran the lenght of the shaft,  allowing the manufacturer to make a lighter shaft that was still very strong!?  Think they may have even been endorsed by Chuck Adams at one point, but I may be wrong. Those didnt really catch on did they.  Anyway,  this wood arrow only has these ruts carved where the fletch is attached ....like a depressed channel to hide the base of the fletch!  From the 50 huh?  Interesting!

Those xcalibers too.....I can remember the older guys shaking thier heads when saw them ....cuz you couldnt possibly straighten it if you put a bend in it!

Dick at Traditional Valley archery has a bunch of those. They are pretty cool. Are your feathers glued in or are they just slid into the channel?

They are glued in .....straight!  All 4 arrows are different,  that 1 is the coolest!  Id think about posting a photo but not convinced the channels would show up,  due to the black dip and cresting.  As it is,  I didnt even notice it at first.  Looks nice tangled in the rack of a 11 point Hoss I took in Indiana a few years back!

Wasn't there some aluminums called "Fluted" as well?...
