Squirrel is the best to use because it is tougher. Squirrel has a really tough hide to it ,It would be better a specially for using it for boot laces and things.

Do an internet search for "brain tanning".
Go to "brain tan.com" you'll learn all you need. I've done it and made a good quiver with it, lots of work though!
brain tan is not rawhide. Brain tan is soft and rawhide is hard and works best when wet. usually made from cowhide.
A company called Van Dykes has dehairing compound. After you skin you der flesh the hide as well as you can and follow the directions with the dehairing kit and then after it's dehaired built a frmae and stretch it and let it dry. I done 6 or 7 seven that way and used it to back bows.
Oldgoat is absolutely correct, brain tanned hide is not rawhide.
PaleoPlanet has a great tutorial on making rawhide. You can see it here: http://paleoplanet69529.yuku.com/topic/15036

Soaking the hide in a mixture of wood ashes and water, after you flesh it,will loosen up most of the hair.
Yeah I'm not wanting brain tanned buckskin, I'm wanting deer rawhide to back bows.

The above replies are correct, braintan leather is not rawhide, but the initial steps in making both are similar with only slight variation.
1. Flesh.
2. Soak in a bucking solution until hair falls out easily
3.Rise hide thoroughly
4.Membrane
5.Dry
Now you have rawhide.
Details can be found at braintan.com as noted above or in books like deerskins into buckskins or Buckskin, the Ancient art of Braintanning.
good luck.

Pick up Primitive Archer Aug./Sept there is an article about macking your rawhide from a deer hide.
Isn't that squaw work?
The brain tanning web sight will tell you everything you need to do, just don't tan it.
Other than that the process is the same.
