Title: cant find arrows long enough....any advice
Post by: rogers on October 02, 2010, 12:45:00 PM
I have a 32 inch draw lenght and I just cant find arrows long enough.  I build my own bows and have to make them 70#'s to be able to shoot a carbon arrow .300 spine because they sell that spine 33" long.  I have been shooting that weight for awhile and can pull it comfortably but I really want to shoot a lighter bow.  I just built a 60# bow for a guy and I shot it for awhile and it's so easy to hold I was suprise how much my shooting seemed to improve.  The problem is the 340 spine is 32" long and when I put a broadhead on I nearly pull the arrow off the string at full draw.  Lighter spines are even shooter.  I really want to shoot carbons arrows but I have to have them 33".  What do you guys think I could do?  Any of you with a long draw what do you do?  I though about calling beman and seeing if they could cut some longer for me, but its hard to see them goin for it.  Thanks
Caleb

Simplest thing is to pick a different anchor point so you have a shorter draw.

Another way is to do what Howard Hill did--flex the bow arm slightly so you have a shorter draw.

One of the human body's greatest assets is adaptability.

I used to shoot with a 30 inch draw. Picked a different anchor point 10 or 12 years ago and never looked back. Now have 28 inch draw.

Iv tried to shorten it by different anchor points to shorten my draw but it brings me out of alignment, brings my string side elbow to far out to the right and I start pluking the string and bad things happen.  Its just natural for me to anchor thumb by my ear, had it all my life and I shoot very well with it. I dont know if I could change my natural shot.

Just add point weight to your .300's when shooting a lighter poundage bow.

Have you considered cane shafts they have a wide spine range they shoot good and are very tough.Call David or Cora Knight at Primal Need Archery he has nice shafts and can make them any weight length and spine.

You might have to go with some aluminum arrows,I believe.Alot of them are 33" to 34.5" long, with a lighter spinne then a 300 spine carbon.Like 2115,2117 are 33" with spines of .461 and .407.

Try switching to woods, and then get them footed for added length.

shoot aluminum, I just measured a 2413 shaft and from the end of nock to end of shaft was 35". Legacy 1916's were only 31 though. They get longer as you go up in size. I had a guy in bow shop back in the early 90's shooting wheels and he had a 34" draw and we just put inserts in and he shot them full length!!

Do not change your anchor if its working for you. Shoot carbon heritage express 150 they have a 32 1/2 inch shaft.

You can find someone making there own wooden shafts. They can make any length they want. They come out all differant spine weights and there could be some they dont need. I used to make my own, and if I still was Id have some for ya.  Mark

Why not get a aluminum shaft that will fit over your arrows and a dz. inserts to fit. Foot your carbons with the aluminum w/insert. That would get you an extra inch. Hap

easton light speeds are 32.5 to 33".  also some of the carbon express arrows are 32".  i have also had outserts manufactured for some of my arrows.  its not the cheapest way to go, but it works well.  essentially you can retrofit any arrow if need be.  i have a legitimate 33" draw and struggled for a while with trying to shorten my draw.  after a conversation with rod jenkins i was convinced NOT to do that.  there are ways.  p.m. me for more info.

Just shoot the 300's. Add a brass insert and then work out the point weight.  Cut the bow center as required to work it out.  You may need to fine tune with the strike plate because you can't cut the shafts.  A bow with a plunger would be handy.

I have spliced carbons at nock end with the small diameter carbons , has worked great for me. I do this to repair short arrows.

Switch to aluminum arrows.

I like to foot my carbons with aluminum as stated before. If you need more weight up front you can leave the carbn insert in and you can also use lead shot to weight the arrow
