Title: Muzzy Phantom and 45lbs.
Post by: jonsimoneau on September 29, 2010, 05:30:00 PM
I have a buddy who is not on this site, but is looking for input on the idea of using a muzzy phantom broadhead...with the bleeder blades in...and a 45# recurve on midwestern whitetails.  I gotta say...the guy is a good shot, so shot placement will not be much of an issue...(he hopes!)  Anyway, does anyone have experience using this head on whitetails with a lower poundage bow?  Penetration issues?  Keep in mind that 99% of his shots will be taken from a treestand.  Thanks guys.

Your friend is fine, he will have two holes on most of his shots.

My wife shoots them and she pulls 42lbs and I saw a young girl put down a 400 lb hog with them and she was shooting 40lb.

I have posted this before so please forgive me. My wife took her first big game animal with a 46# @ 26"  DAS recurve and a beman shaft with a 100grain insert and a 100 grain Muzzy Phantom. She got a pass thru. (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a322/Arrowworks/Bearlo2.jpg)

Then she used the same set up for this four pointer with similar results.

Pictures speak louder than words so i won't add anything.

Jon, no doubt they will kill a deer. I hunted with them for two years and shot many deer from my 50 lb bows. But a field point will kill a deer if you hit is in both lungs but it's the shots that don't hit the mark that are suspect especially with a mid 40's pound bow. I ended up going with Magnus Stingers as the bleeder on them is much smaller and I've seen better penetration with them.

I would like to make one other point about mutiblade heads. When Fred Bear designed and marketed the four blade Razorhead the average hunting bow  weight was 45#.....50# was considered a "big" bow back then. They (four blade heads) worked very well then and they still do with bows of that weight. Get them sharp and put them where they belong...simple!

We know that young lady pretty well!   :bigsmyl:  She killed that big ole' hog with a compound set at 40# and it zipped right through it.

Here she is with a 250lb +/- hog that she took using Muzzy Phantom 125's and a JavaMan Tanjavur pulling 40@25, her first trad harvest.
