would love to hear about your hunts, game you saw or anything you want to add. i can not hunt untill Saterday but i plan on adding a little something about each days hunt to this thread. anyone get out today?
3Feathers, KAT and myself spent the mourning on the mountain before the rains came. Not much move'n,alot of acorns dropping but not a bad sit. I only feel asleep twice....[yea right] :biglaugh:
My wife let me go outside to take the trash out... Does that count?
Go Get 'Em Ken! Show Ron how it's done. :)
... mike ...
Hey Mikey, did you any alley rabbits on the way to the trash.... :nono:
Didn't see anything this morning but saw 8 does in the evening. Nothing close enough to even get excited about. Tons of turkeys as well. Saturday I hope to get a turkey, deer and another bear. Not that I want much or anything like that, right....
Good luck out there guys. Have fun.
How about some pictures guys? They don't have to be trophy shots.I'd love to see some of the country, especially as the leaves turn.
Good Luck you guys. I wish the Army woulda kept my son at Fort Drum. I really enjoyed the contrast of hunting those Northern New York woods compared to AZ.
QuoteMy wife let me go outside to take the trash out... Does that count?
Without the leash
As soon as the rain drops off I will be on the
moutain again,so far just dropping acorns and pesty red squirrels........
I went up to the big wood yesterday am,didn't see a thing, did alot of scouting! mast crop everywhere's! Our trail cams have been showing more yote than anything else the past year! they have done a number on our deer herd! I'll head back up thurs am,but on friday i'll be hunting yotes! Good luck guys and be safe!!
Good Luck everyone! Tough hunting in the big woods, a deer sighting is a success. A deer Kill, well, That is outstanding!
Going up tomorrow to spend some quality time in the wood, changed packs, going lighter with a Cat Quiver and waist belt. Trying only to take the things really needed.Sooner or later I'll get it right....lol. Weather sounds good but it might be a bit warm.
Gonna do a deer dance for you Ronny.Youll get it done this year.
man wish i was there tommorow!
I'll eat a samich for you Ken.... :biglaugh: Just me and 3Feathers tomorrow, would like to see some action.
good luck to ya! i plan on staying the weekend at camp, Zmonster is staying at camp as well. you would think they would move a little tommorow morning with all this rain and wind, if its calm you might see some movement.
Good luck Ron and Tim.
watching, waiting and wishing...
looking the the fellas have a good morning to hunt, i would think the deer would be moving a little afetr this last batch of warm weather and rain.
I haven't had a chance to get out yet as I am just finishing up a new roof for the house. But, my son got a bear on opening morning of the early bear season with his homemade recurve. Was not even able to get a good pic before it was cut up though.
Good luck everyone and stay safe.
Mike
Got to sit Monday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon. Not much moving in this area yet.coyotes howling at prime time..Mike
I was out yesterday afternoon in Oswego County. Nothing moving except the acorns were falling like hail. I will go out for a walk again this afternoon for a couple hours.
Spent the better part of the day on the mountain, not much moving, lots of acorns, some deer sign. a few tree rats, BUT it was a nice day had lunch at the campsite and put a lil push to Tim in the early afternoon, brushed in another blind, ready for Saturday!!!!!!!!!
Good luck Ron
yeah man come on Saterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Felt good to be in the stand.Guess I will have to
put some time on the mountain, sooner or later it will happen.
without a doubt bro just got to pay your dues for sure! takes a while to get a good feel for the mountain, you will though and it will talk to you! just think how big that place is and we are trying to make it happen in just a couple days, thats hard hunting for sure! we WILL take a deer of the mountain this year, i PROMISE you!
Ken & the boys,
I am praying for your success! Hope to meet you guys there for some hunting and camp life. Long season but goes by so fast with more work days than days in the woods. Good luck!
It was nice to be out yesterday afternoon. Quite a few beech nuts falling in Parish. I had one walk by me in a hurry about a half hour before sunset. It was about 50 yards away. I got my binoculars on it and watched it for about 10 seconds and it disappeared. It had its tail straight out and looked to be walking in a zig-zag pattern. Wasn't feeding as far as I could tell. So, I was happy to see something.
Its a wet one today. Keep dry every one and good Luck.
Dont worry Tim, Like you said if it was all about the meat, we would be using Guns. Your time will come.
Is everybody ready for Saturday, Broadheads sharp, knife sharp, lunch made, boots waterproofed. I'm looking forward to the big hunt on the mountain with the crew. Stands are up, blinds built, lets all shoot true if we get the chance,,,,no, when we get the chance!!!
looking forward to it!!!!!! hope to put a hole in some deer tommorow!!!
Took Monday off (opening day on last years tag!!) But Mama came down with the flu ------- 4days and 6!!!!! that's right 6 inches of rain later here in the Adirondaks my stand which was on a high spot inside a mucky but traversable swamp, it's now impossible to get to it unless I portage a canoe 3 miles in!!!! NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED!!!!!!!!!
FINALLY got my power back! My power has been out since I got home from work yesterday. The wind knock down a power line something fierce. Momma and baby were very unhappy. It was miserable humid and hot in the house and no breeze coming through the windows. Iraq flash backs.... Nobody slept. I couldn't convince my wife to sleep in a tent in the yard under the rain. lol It would of felt better.
I cant wait till the morning. Gotta get up at 2am. Im SOOOOO looking forward to this. See you all in the AM.
GOOD LUCK!!! My Friends & Brothers!!!!!!!
we will be 7 Tradgangers strong tommorow morning, deer killin time fellas!!!!!! i am EXTREMLY confident that we will SEE deer tommorow, the KILLIN is up to you!
Whats up Chuck? wish you were here my friend.
What a great mourning, birds singing, owls hooting, coyotes howling and turkeys clucking, but no deer. I almost had a shot at a turkey hen until her brood came along like Moe, Larry and Curly :smileystooges: and spoiled the whole thing. Lots of tree rats having a field day. Lunch around the fire at noon and just a good day to be out .....I'm sure others will chime in later!!
3 others had chances at Turkey. No Deer sighted. I saw 3 squirrels from the top of the mountain and 2 ravens. Weather was great bit nippy but there was no other place I would have rather been.
What a great group of Trad gangers on the mountain today.
Great morning out.Good to see everybody again. No
deer again, hard to find sign with all the rain we
had, everythings washed out.Did get to draw on a turkey though, but got busted and over the hill they ran.................
great time had by all, will post pic's tommorow, VERY tired right now! will be at it in the morning!
I saw a total of 5 does this morning in the Happy Valley State Forest. And numerous rubs, maybe 5 or 6. They were all over 40 yards out, so I enjoyed watching them feed.
8 of us and 4 saw turkeys, one missed and Izzy killed a squrriel. did some more scouting today and found the mother load of rubs! will be back at it next weekend.
Sat 2 days during the week and yesterday morning in Prospect, saw 11 does. Had a couple within 30 yards, not close enough for me. Had 5 on the way in on a main trail, 50 yards out and coming, but the landowner decided to walk her dogs then and they headed for the hills. Oh well.
Sat this morning and evening at camp outside of Boonville, did not see a thing. Back at it next Saturday.
Adkarcher
Had a blast up there with you fellas, was much needed spiriual medication.Heres some pics. Finally caught up with an ever so elusive Adirondack squirrel. Also found a bunch of bear sign, beech trees clawed up and some poopy. Also saw a newt in a little glade that was nothing short of enchanted.Sunlight burning dew off the forest floor, a nice breeze through the hemlocks, the song of a stream and the sound of geese overhead. The spot had me caught in the moment for sure.Thank God for places like that.

ya looked right at home there Izzy! spirtual place for sure bro, its what draws me there. was really neat to see you pick up on the game trail by the rim of the shelf. that trail is pounded down by years and years of critters walking that lip of the ridge, an awesome place to sit! i can show ya some beech trees that are scared from top to bottom from bears.

Zmonster (Casey) stayed the night on the mountain and he used a hammock that he had used while deployed in the military. was an AWESOME set up and i will be buying one for sure. weighed next to nothing, he set it up in a minute flat and comes with bug screen and rain fly!!! was a real treat to learn a little something new like that!

I'll get up there this week at some point, want another go at the turkeys...lol!!!
Got a question for you guys up in the NY state, I went hunting in Northern NJ on Saturday. I usually hunt in central NJ, so this is the first time hunting where there are bear and we aren't the top of the food chain. My buddies send me up this trail and tell me just walk slow and keep your eyes open because there are deer that like to hang out along the trail. I start to stalk along the trail and get about 250 yds. from where I started from. I hear something moving further out in the woods and then I see a black patch through the trees and leaves and yes it is moving and getting bigger. The bear walks out about 40-45 yds. from me and stretches across from one side to the other side of the trail. I didn't measure from one side to the other side of the trail but it is long. It takes a lot to intimidate me but I got to tell you, standing there with just a bow, no side arm, no back up while this bear pauses by the trail crossing from right to left was a little unnerving. Let me add, I do hunt in Maine with a rifle and go in and come out in the dark by myself, and there are bear there also but not nearly as many.
So here is the question, how does one sleep in a hammock or even a tent knowing these bruins are walking around at night and they can see and smell and hear better than you, run faster than you and are much stronger than you, and all you have is a bow and no back up.
Thanks for any answer.
Very cool guys, congratulations Izzy, that is awesome. Is there a link for that hammock? I would definitely be interested in getting one of those.
Nathan
Ken you have a special place there! I gotta get back there real soon! Do you think the gobblers you saw today were the same that I had a confrontation with??? 10 more steps and we'd a been eating camp fire grilled turkey.Oh well, a few more days of feasting on acorns and they'll be fater still. :banghead:
yes i think it was the same bunch as they were all gobblers, i heard them tree gobble down the ridge from me around 7am when i was in my stand. i used my wingbone call and they came right in. tried to move my feet for better position and the lead gobbler instantly busted me!
link for the hammock.

I had one of the Hennessy hammocks and they are pretty cool. I wish I kept it. Here are a couple of the rubs I found Sunday:

Most time the bears are happy to stay away from man. They may sniff around and check out the campsite but as long as you use proper food storage and some common sense they will leave you alone. Backpacking into the Adk's. for years and never had a problem. During bow season it's not legal to carry a back-up fire arm, but I have fishing in the spring.
Great pics Ken. Thanks for the great time. I had a blast. Looking forward to doing it again. It was great meeting everyone. Izzy, Tim, Ken, Chris, Charlie, Ron. I would share camp with these great guys any day.
Ron, Im sorry, but the Widow sold. Had I known you would have been interested, I would have held off. Im sure there will be more. I hear Ken has a few...lol
As for the night in the woods, It was great. Everyone thinks Im nuts, wife included, but that kind of solitude and the music of the woods allows me to decompress like nothing else. After returning from my 3rd tour in Iraq, I learned real fast that there is no better medicine. I try getting out as often as possible.
The Hammock it amazing. I dont go anywhere without it. I carry it in my truck, on my bike, in my backpack etc. You never know when the need my arise. My wife says it makes for a esy meal for the bears. Like a human burrito. lol. She may be right, but if that's the way I was meant to go, then so be it. A least I'll be left in the woods one more time as a pile of bear scat.
The only thing that was slightly unnerving for me, was right at sun down, I unmistakeably heard some distant music. Now I'm in the middle of nowhere, and I know there is NO way it could be from the nearest town, but damn if I didn't hear it. I couldn't make out what it was, but it was definitely some rhythmical sound. I eased my concern by telling myself it was spirits of great hunters past or of a Pow Wow greeting me into woods.
Oh, and then there was the porcupine that wanted to share the camp fire at 5am. Cool looking little animal. Almost comical when I startled him, and he turned and went into a aggressive posture.
Looking forward to doing it again.
Thanks for the responses guys, I'll keep that knowledge about bears in the front of my mind when we go again this Saturday, and I'll be a little more relaxed, but just a little.
If you want to know more about North Jersey Bears.....
Talk to Joe Skipp, or one of the "Jersey Boys" here on the "gang".
The bears in North Jersey have absolutely NO fear of man,(due to them not being hunted) and DO NOT give ground!!! The boys have had many "hair raising" encounters over the years!!!!! :scared:
All of the guys carry bear spray with them...

Be nice if the rain would stop..........
Ron & anyone else interested. It is legal to carry a firearm during archery season. The only week it is not legal is during muzzle loader season. This is straight from the ECO officer in my area. The reason it is legal is because of early bear season is still open with firearms. You can carry a gun in case you decide you want to shoot a bear with a gun even though you are bow hunting. I carry mine almost every time out. The night I shot my bear with my longbow I had my rifle with me just in case. The regs are not really clear on this fact and I half think that is on purpose. The ECO who told me it was legal also gave me his card & told me to call him if anyone ever tries to hassle me about it. Legally early bear ends the day before muzzle loader which means pistols & rifles are not legal that week. Good luck out there guys.
Dan
Your CO is wrong.....If your bowhunting you CAN NOT carry a firearm of any kind. I have been a Bow -ED instructor for 15 years. The only way you can carry is if your a law enforcement officer, such as an off duty cop who happens to be bowhunting.
crotch horn...pm sent!
I think Crotch Horn is right.
Legally I was told by a co that you can't hunt with a person if he has a gun and you have a bow and either could help the other in pursuit of their intended quarry....now maybe things have changed. But I find that hard to fathom in our great state of New York. I hope your right.
You can't carry a firearm (even a hand gun with a permit) while archery hunting in NY.
Bob's right.
:coffee:
Weather not looking good till Thursday Afternoon, may have to grab a few hours on the mountain when ever I can. Even a little while in the woods can be productive sometimes.
Im a peaceful man, I dont usually pack heat anyway but its an interesting question that Ill have to research.Hunted Moose River Plains and Indian Lake yesterday.Although it beautiful country we saw nothing, nothing, nothing was seen by Cuz or me. Saw a mama with 2 tiny fawns near the camps and a big old girl on the drive out but the woods up there were devoid of last years sign.No tracks, rubs, poopy or anything else.Come on Southern zone.
torn up in the swamp on top of the mountain right now, rubs EVERYWHERE! will be hunting Saterday and Sunday if anyone wants to join.
Ken
How crowded was Happy valley last weekend?
I have not been there in several years and even when people were there it was easy to find another spot. Havent scouted it out in some time.
Phil
Somebody up there has got to whack one soon!! Waiting & hoping for you guys.
Hey Phil,
When I was in Happy Valley last week-end I saw one other vehicle parked, and another on the road driving out. No pressure at all. I was hunting west of Whitney Pond.
Ron
This is from the DEC regulations under manner of taking:
Manner of Taking
It is unlawful to:
Take big game while the deer or bear is in water.
Possess a firearm of any description when bowhunting or when accompanying a person bowhunting during special archery seasons.
Link to DEC Website (http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8305.html)
These's no need to guess at the regs, they're all in the books you get with your license and posted online.
Good luck up there....
My Lyme disease has flared up again something awful so shooting a bow isn't looking good for me right now :banghead:
No-sage, sorry to hear about the flare up. Rotten timing. Hope you feel up to shooting soon.
No-sage....thank you for the info and the link.
My ECO told me that is where the glitch is Ron & to anyone else interested. It is a Regular archery season not a "special" archery season as stated in the regs. Ron, I actually always believed what you stated to be the truth. At best, it depends on which officer you talk to. The best thing to do is talk to whoever patrols your area & see what their take on it is. The ECO where I hunt says I AM legal so during the overlap of early bear I will be packing. I am sorry if caused any confusion but like everything in good ole NY..... You just can't get a straight answer even if asking those who are suposed to know.
I've stayed out of this for some time but.....
The bottom line is, You are either BOW HUNTING or you are BEAR HUNTING!!!!! Simple as that.
There is a "early" Bear Season with which you can use firearms. It DOES overlap the Archery Season by a few days,HOWEVER... The Archery Season is for Deer AND Bear!!! If You want to hunt Bear with a firearm, that's fine... HOWEVER, If you are BOWHUNTING with a firearm in your possesion, you are in direct violation of the law!!!
There is no "glitch" Your ECO is wrong!!! Also, IMHO he wouldn't be the first "dumb" Conservation Officer that I have come acrossed. More than a few of them don't know the laws they are supposed to enforce. You could take his line of thinking in other directions too... Squirrel Season is also open, but you can't carry a .22 then again,Turkey Season is also open... But,you can't carry a shotgun...
Plain said and done... Once the Archery Season starts, you better not have a firearm in your possesion if you are BOWHUNTING!!!
It doesn't get any simpler than that.....
(Thank You for listening, I'll get off my soap box now)
OK then...........Is anyone going up to hunt on Sunday. I can't make it Saturday but plan at least half a day on Sunday.May spend some time up near the camp looking around, sneak and peek if you know what I mean.........
i can not hunt Satreday morning either but will be hunting all saterday afternoon and evening. will hunt all Sunday morning in to afternoon.
I will be hunting sat. morning. Will not be able
to make it Sunday got to get ready for south......
This will be my last post on this subject. The thread is about hunting not regs. I contacted a friend of mine who is a Ranger in a different area of NY and asked him. He recieved the same question from 2 other people the same day. Basically he said what has been stated before. If you are bowhunting leave the guns home. He said when it does come up it is up to the officer to decide if a violation has occured. He said the law is very unclear the way it is written and they take that into account when coming upon someone. He said it is usually obvious if someone is carrying a pistol for backup or trying to get away with something. He said it is one of the issues they are trying to change so there is no question. Until then he said it depends on who you run into & how they interpret the law.
Now let's stop all of this and talk more about hunting!! Good luck to all and I am sorry to anyone I may have upset or offended. I always try to obay the law and if the ECO had not told me different I would not question what you guys are saying. It was how I believed the law to read. Enough said I hope.
Dan,
this groups skin is thicker then leather bro no worries here! ya better make it up here this year to hunt though!
I will be hunting tommorow afternoon untill dark and Sunday all morning untill 1 if anyone wants to join. looks like a few will be hunting tommoorw morning as well. as allways everyone that can make it is welcome.
crotch horn... PM sent my friend!!!
OK, this really is the last post on this from me. First to those who have apologised.... Accepted. Takes a man to do that. I have killed two bears in my life. The first was in 07 and was my first trad kill. First animal I ever shot at with a recurve. I took up trad shooting in Jan of 07 and was blessed to make a clean kill so early. My second bear was just a couple weeks ago during early bear. This was with my Lost Creek longbow. I hunt early bear with a bow because it is a love of mine. Why all the fuss? Well, back in 07 while standing on my logging road after dark waiting for my brother I was charged by a 515lb angry black bear. It was not pleasant to say the least and the bear stopped the charge litterally two feet from me. We stood face to face for a few seconds then he turned and ran off. How do I know what he weighed? One of the guys I know shot him with a rifle a month later. He was leaning against a tree and turned around to see the bear coming towards him only 8 yards away. Luckily he dropped him on the spot. Last year on public land in the same area I was walking out after dark holding my recurve and moving towards the road when I heard something running towards me. At about 15 yards I could make out what it was. Two cubs with mom in tow were right there. Once again they ran the other way. I don't need a gun because I have any doubt about my ability with a bow ( although some of my buddies may differ on that. Lol), the gun is for self defense and only if I were actually being attacked. I did not fire a shot at the 500# bear running at me in the dark because I did not have to. On the other hand had it gone badly I would have had a chance at least. I must admit since that charge I am not as confident walking in & out in the dark but I do. Sometimes if I am up there alone I carry the pistol. If hunting with others it stays in the truck. Am I breaking the law? Many may say YES! I say I proved myself to those that be when they issued me my pistol permit. I am trying to keep myself safe and return home in one piece to my wife. I am not out to shoot an animal illegally or any such nonsense. Let's just all enjoy eachothers company and the thrill of being out there. There is to much good out there to always worry about the bad. If anyone looks poorly on me for my choice so be it. I can accept that. I look in the mirror and know I hunt ethically at the end of the day.
Now, Ken and all of my fellow hunters up there on the moutain. Good luck and fill the meat pole!!!!
Well said Dan!!!!! Thank You!!!!!
(Some say... "Better to be tried by 12,than carried by 6") ;)
Hey, just wondering if you guys could let me know where you're hunting? I'd love to hook up with some other trad hunters. You could e-mail me or just post it here, PLEEZE. thanks, Chuck
Chuck, we are hunting near Rockwood N.Y. on RT. 10 just north of RT. 29. It's a short hike up the mountain to mostly state land. Hard wood ridges, broke up by spruce and hemlock. Lots of acorns and some beech nuts. And a fair amount of deer and Bear sign. Adkmountainken can give you a better lay of the land.
Anybody hunting sat morning???
Can't make it Sat. Going on Sunday AM.
headed up to the mountain till dark shortly, maye tonight is the night!
nothing tonight but lots of frsh sign. me and Ron W will be hunting there tommorow, anyone want to join?
Good luck tomorrow.
What a beautiful mourning,36 degrees, clear and just a slight up hill breeze. Sat for a bit more than 4 hours. Saw what I always see.........ZIPPO! AdkKen was up the mountain and saw 2 deer that winded him and 4 turkeys that hung up and didn't come close enough. Still a nice day to be out for a while, acorns still falling........
Nice guys, Wish my plane landed earlier and I was feeling better, I would have been there with ya.
I finally got lucky and found some private property to hunt on. Didn't have time to set anything up so I just went in and stood by a tree, I kept scanning the area but not good enough, they came in and I didn't hear them at all. I had about a 25 yard shot but got busted from my slow movement by the one that already passed me.
Next week, up a tree I go. I should have known better today because there was no wind and hardly a breeze. There are some nice trees right by and I'll set one up during the week if possible.
I shot this one last night and didn't find it until this morning. I can't believe it made it through the night without the coyotes getting it. When I shot it I thought that it was I doe, I didn't know he had spikes until this morning.

Rick,
AWESOME job man!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats Rick  :clapper:
 Nice Rick!!
good for you.Deer are not easy to come by in the northern zone.glen
Way to go! Congrats!!
Glad to see somebody connect up north. Congrats.
Way to go Rick! Lucky you recovered the whole deer. Those yotes and bears can make quick meal on a deer like that.
Nice shooting Rick
I haven't seen too many deer the last few times out. It has been too warm and they must be moving more after dark. I have to move my tree stand maybe another fifty yards to the west of where I have it. The deer that I have seen, seem to be crossing the same knoll from all different directions.
A couple of nights ago, I did see a doe that seemed to be chasing her fawns off as if she might be getting ready to look for some attention from the boys. The rut might be just around the corner.
Rick
Congrats
