Title: Missing......lets be honest here......
Post by: BowHuntingFool on September 27, 2010, 12:30:00 AM
....oh man, I'm sure we all miss from time to time but I'm on 3 in a row here! I missed twice during the last week of last years season and missed a Doe 2 days ago! Well, the Doe was on high alert and just rolled under my arrow, pretty awesome to see actually!

How many among us miss a few here and there! LOL!

Spine the next one and add a finisher. Multiple hits on one deer bumps your overall hit rate stat  ;)

Missed a doe late last season.  Last day of the season actually.

I've missed a few and killed a few-all part of the game. Turn those misses into hits and all is good again.

Just my opinion, but I don't think threads on high numbers of missing are good for us. Lots of misses suggests lots of wounds as well. There are a lot of things between a miss and a kill - they are not the only end results when an arrow is loosed.

It happens from time to time.  But a clean miss is way better than a bad hit.

Me too, I missed a doe last year.  I missed a 150ish 8 point 3 years ago, that one still stings.

We all miss.  I've always tried to tell my son that he needs to be so comfortable shooting that he should be the most surprised person in the woods when he actually misses.  I've went 9 yrs. straight without a miss and then had 3 in a season.  Things happen and you are shooting at something that has its own reactions.  We just need to be as well prepared as we can be and take the shots we know we can make and be shocked when we hit nothing but air!

Remember to not pick your head up to see where the arrow is going. Let it get there first.

If we aint missin now and then we aint huntin hard enough friend.  My last miss was actually a solid hit, I had several yards of clear shooting at a nice deer but managed to center punch a wild grape vine hanging from a tree just about 4 yards before I would have skewered a fat doe.  Come to think of it I was probably aiming right for that darn vine so never mind I never miss and I never lie.

We all miss, but if nobody is around you don't have to admit to it.

Don't feel bad.  I double lunged the first traditional archery kill that I ever shot at.  It was a deer.  I felt pretty confident.  I at and missed the next two around 20yds.  I practiced more and more.  The next deer was at 30yds.  It was a poke.  I shot the doe turned all the way around and the arrow hit her in the oppisite side hind quarter.  Luckily it cut the femoral artery and she fell about 10yds away.  That was pure luck.  I definately learned that 20-25 yds is my max effective range.  I couldn't believe that she had time to turn opposite the way she was facing.  Needless to say, I had to share my luck story, but also the lesson that I learned about my effective range.  Good luck, and we are all gonna miss.  We just need to take something from every miss.

3 years ago I missed the same doe twice in a matter of 20 min from a ground blind.  She was'nt more than 18 yards away both times and totally oblivious to my presence.  She did'nt spook when the first arrow slipped underneath her, and simply walked off only to return a few minutes later. The 2nd arrow actually cut hair from the underside of her chest, she did'nt hang around after that.  I kicked myself in the butt repeatedly andf called myself a few choice names.  :banghead:

Maybe, but then again I hear about wheelie guys and gun guys missing all the time and wounding deer all the time.

Gee Joe, after your video, I thought for sure there was no way you could miss.

I will be hunting the Family Farm next week near Richland Center.  The big ten point we passed on last year (earn a buck) is bigger and better than any deer we have seen in a few years. There are a few other fine bucks roaming them hills too.

Hang in there Joe, you will connect!

And yet another reason to not repeal "Don't ask Don't tell"   :nono:

Honestly I like missing far better than wounding.

And it says the same for them as it does for us.
Anyone who misses regularly wounds regularly as well. Lot's of room between missing and killing. It is not good for public posting - or even worse, laughing about multiple missing. And before anyone accuses me, I am far from perfect - but those details will only be shared privately.

Steve, I am not disagreeing with you, In fact I agree That it may shed negative light for people who choose to read into things.  We  know there isn't any shortage of them people in NY, that's probably why hunting is declining here.

Perhaps those people need to be brought over to my buddies farm. There is a doe who had 3 fawns this year.  All 3 are dead and she has wounds all over her.  He's a Biologist and said coyotes killed the fawns and wounded the doe. I'll take his word for it.

I dont know exactly where I'm going with this except, wounding deer is natural, It happens and it isn't only inflicted by humans. People who assume missing means wounding and look poorly upon hunting are already anti-hunters.  Yeah I know theres no reason to get them riled up but then again there's no reason to talk to them anyhow since I am not skilled in the area of rhetoric enough to change their opinions. But I also think that when talking about what we love, we shouldn't have to walk on egg shells, we just need to be respectful and tasteful.

You are right Steve when you say there is nothing funny about wounding deer.  It kills me to hear of people giving up as soon as they lose blood.  It also irritates me to no end when I hear guys talking about deer hunting in public places when they say things like "I blasted it" or "I shot that M.F.er in the ass"  words like blitzed or wasted, waxed and rittled or emptied my clip and shot its legs off.

these kinds of conversations are what brings a bad taste to peoples mouths, they certainly do mine.

well seems like most of you guys are talking about big game . . . I'm in, lol . . . but then someone talked about missing squirrels . . oih. I have only missed one deer, a dandy 8 point, their was a sapling covering his front shoulder, I was so worried about hitting that dang thing that I nailed the tree  :biglaugh:  I have missed WAY to many shots on small game to recount, lol

I might be jinxing myself for Friday morning (I know where a decent buck crosses a saddle every morning at about 8:15, and have a tree stand hung in a pine down wind).....but ever since I started my "slam dunk shot only" policy I haven't missed one. My furthest shot in a couple years has been 7 yards.

I just wish I could get close enough to a deer to miss.  Maybe this will be my year.

I think being positive that you can make the shot is half the battle. That being said I have missed my share of the other half the battle, the SHOT itself. It happens we're human. I see guys with wheels on their bows do it all the time. I don't know why we do it but I know I tend to miss high when I miss. I overdraw vs the shortdraw we hear about when faced with the animal. Adrenaline does strange things to us.

I sent one right over the back of 300" class bull just over a week ago. It was a steep downhill shot and him jumping the string didn't help any.  I think the arrow actually skipped off of his back.  Oh well, it was way better than not having that opportunity at all.  I will redeem myself.

I miss a cow elk at 25 yd and didn't get a chance the rest of the hunt and it a 15 day hunt.  Here in Az you may not got but one shot. That is the way hunting goes.
