So I told my elk story already. After getting that all taken care of I went to chase a deer.
After stopping to talk to Whip for a little bit I took off to a spot where I had seen a few deer before. Knowing that there was a few large bucks there that my Dad a few friends had chased before I was excited.
I had no sooner walked a few hundred yards from the truck when I spotted a nice buck. He was not a big buck really but I decided to try a stalk. I spent the next 45 mins walking around a hill to get the wind right. After finally getting to where I needed to be I had 200 yards of dry timber to sneak through. It took nearly two hours to make the stalk quietly. Glassing often moving only while he was feeding once I could see him. I lost him 40 yards out. I knew he was close so I kept moving closely. Then I heard a stick break behind me. I had some how got past him in the blown down timber. Slowly I turned knocking an arrow. He had me though. I waited and waited. Finally he turned his head away and I drew. He was 16 yards I picked my spot and released. The arrow flew true to its mark and he bounded off.
I waited 30 mins and started tracking seeing really good sprayed blood at first, but it went to just spots. I was a little lost but soon picked up the trail again. I traked him almost 500 yards before it got to dark in the trees to see blood and decided that I would have to come back in the morning.
The next morning I brought a frind with me and we found him shortly after getting on the trail. It was the longest track I have ever had on a well hit animal.
This is the exit hole. I was above him so the entrance was midway just behind the shoulder.

I don't know why you would say he's not a big buck? I realize they get bigger, but that is a dandy trophy. I'd love to have that on my wall to go with the few whitetails I've got mounted. Heck, I'd love to have any mulie cause I've never got to hunt them....so that would be a once in a lifetime trophy for me.
I can't explain why he ran so far, but this is my take on it. If you were above and hit midways behind the shoulder and you obviously got a low exit wound, I would venture to say that you clipped the bottom 1/3 of the entrance lung and missed the heart. Or clipped the bottom of the lung and just grazed the heart. Deer can go amazing distances on one good lung, and on heart shots where no lung is hit, they can go 150 to 200 yards on pure adrenaline before piling up.
I killed a 155" 10pt. in 2008 with a rifle and hit right behind the shoulder and low with 130gr. Interbond, taking out the top of the heart and both lungs. The buck still went 80+ yards before piling up, and that just blew my mind how tuff they are.
You made the right call to give up the search and look again the next morning. Too many times people just have to keep looking in the dark and end up tromping all over what little sign there is and never find their deer. Had they just left it till daylight they might have recovered their animal. Congrats on a nice buck!
That's a good thing Randy.....you've done a lot for a 'young man' no doubt. :notworthy:
Congrats on a Great stalk and a heck of a nice buck!
