Title: Ohio?
Post by: Gil Verwey on September 24, 2010, 02:42:00 PM
Every year we head to Ohio for few weeks to deer hunt. We were going to Vinton County for a while and staying in Lake Hope. This year we are going to Shawnee. We will be hunting starting October 31 for two weeks.

Is there anybody from the area down there that can tell me how the acorn mast is this year?

Also if you hunted Shawnee has the dead falls from that terrible ice storm a few years ago gotten cleared out a bit.

Thanks
Gil

Not sure about down there but in central Ohio (not too far north of that area), acorns have been down for weeks.  They seem to be weirdly early this year.

The acorns are everywhere and like Jim said they've been falling for sometime.

Mast is great this year. I'll be hunting the white oaks early in the morning,,, I hope!

The deadfalls remain but the limbs are starting to break off making getting through a little easier. I was actually out cutting osage during that ice storm. SCARY STUFF!!!!

yes the acorns are falling early, maybe because it's been abnormally hot and we had extremely strong winds. i went squirrel hunting a couple days after and couldn't believe how many had fallen. have you been to shawnee? it's pretty much all hills and woods. the part that really stinks is there are no quads allowed, and all the roads seem to be on top of the hills. you have to drag your deer uphill. good luck there are some really great bucks there because of the lack of pressure.

Thanks for the information.

John you made my day. That is just what we look for in a spot. We like hunting whitetails that aren't pressured too much.

If we can't get some property in Adams County west of Ohio Brush Creek we will be hunting the Backcounty and Wilderness areas.

Thanks again everybody
Gil

Was around Shawnee a week ago acorns all over the place. The best thing about Shawnee is there is no QUADS ALLOWED!

Ohio bucks are cagey.  They improvise body armor and stuff - don't mess with 'em.
