So what kinda deer hunter are you? a meat hunter or a sport/trophy hunter?
This is almost like a loaded question. NOT trying to start trouble here, but there is another side to the story. I hunt because I like to eat deer, my family likes to eat deer and I like to hunt. That part makes me a meat hunter.
I also hunt because I like to find a buck (pick 1 buck out) and hunt him. Not just any deer that comes along. That makes me a sport hunter.
If I am hunting an area that I have not had the ability to scout all summer, therefore I don't know what is using the property, I will only kill a nice mature buck with a good set of horns. That make me a trophy hunter.
I choose the does I kill for meat and the bucks I kill for horns. That is just me. Does eat better but a set of ears on the wall would just look silly... :saywhat:
I voted for meat hunter, but only because as a generalization horns don't even really rank on the importance scale. I hunt to have hunted; because I just love it, and because it's something I'm driven to do. I think you could maybe break the poll down even more, as "trophy" is a very relative term and doesn't necessarily have to have anything to do with horns. It can be different for every individual...
Can't answer - it's not that black and white.
I didn't vote as I don't fit into the little pigeonholes.
Both.
I am a meat hunter, I guess any deer is a trophy to me. That said, even if you can't eat horns, I would not hesitate to put an arrow through big "moster buck"!!
Bob.
..one that kills deer
i truely doubt that the majority who responded meat are hunting for the meat. we hunt because we enjoy the pursuit, the thrill, the euphoria of hard won success. i'm sure if you have the discretionary income to buy all the equipment for hunting you can certainly afford to buy meat at the store. now if you use the term "meat hunter" to mean i shoot whatever i can get, that's different.

ME TOO
Yea I have to say both...I hunt for meat to feel my freezer. But if I usually look for a nice buck with a bit of age on him.
I'm a little both, I'm a meat hunter & have no problems taking a nice Doe for the freezer but if I spot a nice Buck then I'll try to close the distance on him.
Haven't seen many nice Bucks around here so meat for now.

There's other reasons to want to eat wild meat Fred... like trying to avoid all the unnatural crap they pump into most animals raised for commercial meat production... :scared:
Since I remarried about six years ago I guess I'm a trophy hunter to a degree but I always put one in the freezer for sure and take a doe or two for some elderly folk that can't get out and hunt but like the meat.
My wife will cook but won't eat it and my girls have slacked off on it so I just eat deer once in awhile.
When I was single it was meat all the way I looked at horns as good handles for draggin out meat.
I just hunt because I love it, don't really even care if I kill one anymore but it's nice when I do. Being there is good enough if that's all it was.
Stiks
Both, but like the pole results so far, I am about 85% meat hunter and 15% trophy/sport hunter. I don't have a lot on my wall, but we eat real well.

The money I spend now on gear, bows, guns and so on is my hobby. I use more of it off season then on. I could get rid of about 90% of it and probably have little effect on my hunting success. I have what I need to kill a freezer full of meat every year, and it was paid for about 20 years ago. Only gas, one or two arrows and licenses really are required every year. I figure about $300 for about 150# of meat. $1.50 per pound prime stuff with no fat, bone, hormones, antibiotics, for fast growth feeding. Sounds like a good deal to me.
I couldnt find a button for CRAPPY hunter :)
I voted as a "trophy/sport" but only because my dream for every season is a buck bigger than I've killed before. I classify myself as a sport hunter because I will only very rarely shoot a young buck. I'd rather fill the my either sex tag with a doe than more bucks like I've killed.
However, I always kill 1-3 does for myself, my family, and/or hunters for the hungry.
I like to fill my freezer and will not pass up an opportunity to do so, but that being said, I will make every effort to take the biggest buck if the opportunity arises.
Fill the freezer early....then hunt for a decent buck.
I am just an OLD hunter....
Who has fun hunting and enjoys being outdoors.
Charles.
its not a 'sport'.
Not very good.I get board to quick and start chassing other varmits or trout.I do no not care if I get one or not.Do not need the meat but I like it.

I agree.
My family really enjoys the, healthy, free range, renewable harvest of venison that I am thrilled to gather by hunting... Big bucks are renewable too...I just believe we should "roast what we kill" and that there should be a balance of Woo Hoo and thankfulness at the end of every successful hunt.
I beg to differ ...hunting is a sport, as is fishing, mountain climbing, cycling and sailing. The so called sports of today are actually games. Hunting is not a game. So , that being said I voted meat hunter because I love to eat venison. But I must be a bad one because I have yet to kill a deer with Traditional gear. But it's only been 42 years.........
I can't vote because I am both. I like big bucks but I will shoot a big fat doe.
I take what the woods will give me.The hunt and the meat are more important to me that a huge rack for my game room.
I will not partake in the pole!
My answer is I love to hunt, I kill animals because I spend my time hunting them, I eat what I kill, The enjoyment comes from getting as close as I can.
Guys its a general question not a label if you find yourself holding out for a big buck all year= a trophy/sport hunter. If you hunt to fill the freezer first due to you depend on that for meat and it doesn't matter about antler size= a meat hunter. Im not trying to make anyone feel bad about the way or how they hunt it's about what you prefer to do when you go out.Lighten up. I prefer to hunt for meat and then a rack and I also like the feeling of the hunt and the shot.
Deer with "drag handles" never blew up my skirt so... Guess I'm a meat hunter... Just LOVE them back strap cutlets!
... mike ...
I just like to get in the woods and see if I'm able to outsmart the deer. I usually give away the meat except one ham and a backstrap. The last deer I shot was given away totally. But it has been some time ago. Wife only likes jerky made from deer. Not deer sausage or any other form. Jerky only. I have to admit it's my favorite type also.
defenatley not a sport-(there are no teams).
i hunt for meat and big antlers,
Last year I made a ton of jerky and ate it all, still ain't had a bowel movement. :jumper:
I'll tell ya'll straight, I'm a sporting meat hunter lol. I go for the groceries and use trad gear to do it to make it sporting.
Both here as well. For me it really depends on the hunting unit!

Like bornagainbowhunter said.
I looked and looked but did not see the choice, Blessed yet unlucky hunter
"a meat hunter or a sport/trophy hunter?"
Depends on the situtation...8^)
Sport hunter who eats the meat.
No trophies - I hardly take pics and have some bone around here somewhere
I personaly take whatever clean shot within my range I am offered and consider it a gift.I ,like most hunters would love to shoot a heavy antlered buck but I am fully content with a doe.In the past I had a three year drought, and not because I was being selective.Just happy to be out there.Glen
I thought about this alot and I have to say my answer is a little different than most I am not a very good deer hunter lately.
I won't go hungry if I don't hunt but I might go nuts!
Hunting is something I just do and deer are one of my major targets but not my only one. I shoot more does than bucks for several reasons. Bucks tend to get to my nerves more is a biggie for me.
That doesn't stop me from trying them and that's something because boiling those racks still doesn't make them edible. Go figure!
I voted meat but that's because you didn't have the choice of I love to hunt, I have to hunt.
Now look what this has done!! My mind just zipped over to those tasty "catfish"/tenderloin? steaks!
God bless,Mudd
PS: insomnia makes me rattle on! Sorry!
I'm plenty happy putting 6 does in the freezer. My family enjoys the venison, I save money because I don't purchase much in the way of new hunting gear. With a freezer full, we buy some pork and chicken to add variety, but after a good year,we won't purchase any beef at all. We know the venison is healthy and lean and fix it any way you would use beef.
I have never passed on a doe to wait on a buck, so I feel pretty firm in my choice of " meat hunter" :campfire:
