Title: What gr. shoud i use?????
Post by: FoMoCo429 on September 21, 2010, 11:01:00 PM
I think i have a choice now for what broad head i want to use, But now i was wondering what gr should i go with? I shoot 125 gr field points on a beman 400 spine carbon arrow. It seems to fly great. I was thinking on going to a 150 gr broad head for deeper penitration. What do you guys think?

Try  tuning a field point in the weight you want before investing in broadheads.

I believe that your thinking is on the right track. If you build your own arrows, you might retune your arrows for a heavier broadhead. It might require a stiffer spine or maybe a shorter shaft if you can stand it with your draw length. Keep experimenting with it, and you will eventually get there.

Go to bowmaker.net and read the tuning information. For a broadhead to fly well and impact in the same place as your practice arrows, the setup has to be tuned.Changing point weight, changes the dynamic spine of your arrow,ie. makes the spine act weaker (more head weight) or act heavier 9less head weight).

A change of 25 grs head weight can equal 5-7 # of spine weight.Fletched, field point arrows can fly vey well when not really tuned but a bare shaft may act differently and a broadhead will even point out more discrepencies in the tune. When you find the right point weight for your setup, all 3 shoot impact together in the target.

The best way for me,is to have a big variety of field points and shhot both fletched and bare shafts together. When I think I am about there with the point weight,I then try the same weight broadhead.

My point is,if you haven't tuned the setup yet, don't settle on a point weight.Your setup will let you know what that should be.All the information you need will be at that link.Good luck.

The broadhead will stiffen the arrow a bit anyway and I also believe 25 grains is the point that won't change much as far as added weight. The added weight will be balanced by the fact the geometry of the broadhead stiffens the arrow and the weight weakens it so it should be an even trade. Shawn
