Ocober 1 is only 10 DAYS AWAY!!!
I know im pumped as ever to get out there and hunt. I just hopethe weather cooprates.
Im fortunate enough to be able to hunt Steuben county opening day then headed down to Jackson county for sunday-tuesday.
Where's everyne else gonna be?
plan on hunting in harrison county.fri-sun.
our season in ohio opens this saturday.plan on going probably first five days here before heading to indiana.
Where you hunting in Jackson County? I live in Jackson Co. just outside of Brownstown. I was going nuts for October (had two weeks off for season)...I have five weeks of training now for my job so no October 1st opener or any hunting till the first week of Nov. Good luck in Steuben Co. and Jackson Co.
I'll be in Sullivan County.
My father-in-law lives in Brownstown. Retired assistant manager of Jackson/Washington State Forest. I visit every two weeks. In fact, his farm backs up to the forest but I never hunt it except for squirrels.
Instead, I hunt near Attica Indiana with my best friend about 3 times (9 days total) each year. The beans have been picked very early this year and by the time I get to Attica (mid-October) the deer will be heavily focused on acorns.
I'm hoping for a recurve shot at a deer like THREE I saw last year in Attica -- all were 145-160 -- the closest was 38 yards.
I grew up in Indiana so I know what it is like waiting for October 1st! I started deer hunting in 1969 and went to Brown County every weekend for about 10 years there after. No deer were in Richmond, IN where I lived in those days.
I will be in Vigo or Clay opening weekend.
I will be hunting Morgan and Clay if work schedule permits.
When I get to Jackson county ill hunt a family farm that's west of the river a few miles, and probably head over to the state forest one day. I truly think that S. Indiana has some of the best hidden potential for monster bucks in the midwest. There are some freaks down there!
I'll be setting up deer camp in Switzerland County this Saturday and checking out the acorns.
If the weather in early October is like this week, I'll be target practicing instead of hunting.
My back yard looks pretty good.
please refrain from saying indiana has big deer,i have a big enough problem with tresspassers now...lol.i lived in jackson county for many years, seymour.killed my first deer on lake priscilla road 20 years ago this season.i miss it over there every once in awhile.....
We'll be in washington and jackson area for the first 5 days can't wait to get there, never hunted deer outside of MI, really looking forward to it, be in the Salem area all weekend. Todd
oh ya ill be hunting dearborn, ripley, scott, and clark counties
Be huntin hard here at home in good ol' Pike county.
Going north to hunt with John Scifres and a few other trad gangers for a few days the second weekend up around Brownstown.
Good luck to all, and just for the record there ain't no big deer in IN. :saywhat:
Stiks
the hunt was just 4 of us last year. I was lucky to have it be on my fall break but this year my break is earlier so i wont make it.
Ill be hunting a trespasser opening weekend. Found his stand last night while hanging my last one of the year.
Should be in Putnam county first couple weekends, and maybe in Owen too. Re-hanging stands this weekend for acorns and water.
I will be in Allen county when the season opens(even though I have an urban spot). Between working at an archery shop and having my daughter get married I have yet to have time to hunt. Plus I am waiting for it to cool down a little. I butcher my own deer so without a cooler I am hesitant to have one hanging when it is in the upper 70's & 80's. When I get serious later in the month I will be hunting in Steuben county.
Biggest deer I've ever killed: Elkhart County, Indiana -- 265#'s field dressed on Kingsbury WMA State Scales. The two biggest racked deer I never shot at, also in Elkhart County, IN.
I probably won't hunt opening weekend unless it's Saturday or Sunday afternoon on Parke County.
I'm pretty sure all the big deer in Indiana have been killed out but we got lots of 100# does and 50# fawns to kill. You non-residents should pony up the $150 tag price for the 4 pointers and fawns we have. Word is we have too many deer and not enough money.
ya what john said aint no big deer here so dont bother with the travel to get here... :dunno:
I'll be setting on the Jennings/Jefferson Co. line next friday. Don't forget fall turkey comes in that day too.
where ya hunting at in Steuben county I live in Steuben.
BleekLight,
almost in Hamilton actually. My Godparents have a farm on Shaughniss rd right off on SR1 that ive been hunting since i was 9.
Where do u do most of ur hunting?
I do most mine with my friend his grandparents have some property just off of a metz road or we go to his parents woods right outside of Hamilton.
I am in the very southern part of the state(Crawford county). As others have said, there are no big deer in this part of the state LOL.
Mike glad to see you bud. Hows your Back holding up? I need to get down sometime and camp for the weekend.
Crawford county is God's country and sure is purty.
Stiks
I still have not decided if I will be in Parke County, IN or in IL on the opener! It depends on the forecast and wind direction which I will choose.
Kris you are welcome anytime. My back is still giveing me some trouble, but after 3 1/2 months of therapy and another round of epidurals I think I will be able to do some hunting this fall.
About those small Hoosier deer. I can tell you this, if a 130 PY walks by me in Indiana, there's no way I'll shoot it.
I don't mind the $150 to IDNR at all. I do wish I could get the 1st Doe tag for less than $150 though. I'd be happy to kill a couple of does and the place I hunt has lots of them, but spending $300 for two tags is a bunch and I can't burn the either sex tag (statewide archery) on a doe after traveling 240 miles one way.
I worked for IDNR for 12 years. My last position was as Manager of Patoka lake 1985-1989. I laid out and had the archery range constructed when I was at Patoka.
Thanks bowwild. That 130 is the last one we have. We need to let 'em walk so we can recall what one looks like. Shoot one of the millions of 1 year old 4 points we have. Most of our 2 year olds are 4 points for that matter. Bad genetics and all. Plus all the oaks have died off from this drought. Crops have failed too. Probably be 10 years before we can count on seeing much more than does and fawns around. Forgot to mention the EHD outbreak we're having and have had for the past 3 years.
Just north of Martinsville.
Dave
dpowers311...give me a call when you get to martinsville and i'll buy you a cup of coffee. Terry 317.557.4862
Washington Co. I'll be steppin out the back door on my little 40 acres or up the road to a Nature Concervancy property I got into this year.
3 DAYS!!
Can't wait! Leaving tomorrow night for my cabin.
I'll be about 600yds from the northern Jackson County line.
I am heading out with Terry tomorrow evening! I am pumped, it will be my first time hunting Indiana!! I promise I won't shoot a real monster! I will settle for a 140"er!! Shawn
Bowwild, why didn't you by a lifetime license when you where a resident? Did you think you would never come home?

Yep, theys some monsters in IN!! I saw several 150" + bucks there and I missed a 190" + buck!! I will be going back there to hunt but not this year.
Good luck to all of you!!
the weather looks like its gonna be perfect!
mid 40's at sunrise for a crispy morning for sure
I'm still trying to swing an afternoon hunt on Sunday. Can't hardly handle not hunting opening weekend. Especially with the weather being so cool! It gets all them 4 points all randy and up and movin after all them fawns we got.
Shawn, now you know I told you several times. There aren't any big deer in Indiana. We are going to look for a little doe to fill the freezer! :)
I once saw a 140" deer while driving through Ohio to get to Indiana.
ya you all just dont get it,there are not any big deer in indiana so dont be telling fibs of those urban ledgend deer..they just arent here
ill be heading to the woods for the first time with a stick on friday. cant hardly wait to see what noble county got in store for me this year
For any of you western Indiana/Eastern Illinios guys that haven't seen it in earlier posts - I'll be doing wounded deer tracking with my blood tracking dog this fall (NO CHARGE!) - I want to get him on as many tracks as possible and hopefully recover some deer that would otherwise be lost.
Will travel within 1hr of Brazil/Cloverdale area. Maybe a bit farther in the right situation.
My tracking cell # is 812-241-2802
The best thing is to call if you have doubt about your shot placement BEFORE going in and looking around with a bunch of buddies - the hardest part for the dog is often getting past the first 100 yards where human trackers have messed up the track and tracked blood all around. We'll talk it over and figure out how to proceed.
Weather is not an issue for the dog (within reason) and neither is time - we train on artificial tracks AT LEAST 24 hours old or it is boring for him. REAL deer are NEVER boring for him!
Ryan
Terry, I forgot!! I will let all the bucks over 140"s walk and wait for one of those tender does!! :bigsmyl: Shawn
laxbowman,
We still never met. I'll be heading up to the U.P., but I'll be hunting here in Steuben too.
I go to Trine and work out most Mondays.
Have a great season!! Shoot True. todd
My only wish is that the State would charge out of staters what it costs us to hunt their state. Nothing personal against those from Illinois, Iowa or Kansas but I doubt they would spend $400 to deer hunt here.
150 plus is still kinda steep. I think we'll definitely see another price hike in out of state prices soon though
150 is not even close to steep. 600 is more like what I was thinking for an out of state tag. We also should be a draw only state for non-residents and make those tags non-transferable so they cant be purchased by outfitters from people who draw and cant hunt. Anyways, Less than 24 to go now, its almost time.
I would come if thet tags went to $1000 each! Of course I just happen to be a lifetime license holder over there!
Good luck Shawn and Terry and everyone else!
headed out to my property now.
44 and a light NNW wind at sunrise. The PERFECT october morning!!
hopefully in 12 hours ill be draggin and doin some work!
Goodluck to all going out in the morning
-john
Well????? Anybody put their tag on one those 4 points or fawns?
Had a nice tom at about 12-13 steps but he caught me before he hit the shooting lane.
im sure lots of guys made meat but i blew my chance.
saw 13-15 deer on friday and had a nice doe bust me at 17 yds. no other shots were presented. i had turkeys behind me later that were feeding towards me. in horror i watched as the neighbors beloved cat stalked them through the woods. i counted down the seconds til he busted up my hunt. he's not gonna be around much longer if he comes in the woods again.
when i went down to southern IN i went bust both on both hunts other than some squirrels.
Best opening weekend weather wise in a long time. I had a blast. Hope everyone else did too!
I got out sat. saw 5 bucks in all. This is my first timw using a gillie and what a blast that is. I hunt crosley most of the time. public land.
for yrs i have packed a treestand on my back. What a treat only carrying 5lbs instead of 20+. pick a spot just about anywhere, slip on the gillie and become invisible.
One buck was 6 steps from me.
Hoping for the urban legend this year. :biglaugh:
I saw this 6ptr on opening weekend. Posted on IN bowsite forum too but what the heck, its fun posting pics. :) -Chris

Chris S., that is one heck of a six! Congrats! I finally have a weekend off and will hit the woods for the first time this Saturday!! Good huntin'! Mike
Thats an amazing 6! Congrats!
Saw almost as many coyotes as deer. It was hot and dry on Friday. Saturday morning was very nice until the torrential downpour hit. Deer just weren't around like normal. I saw 10 deer total and only 5 of those while on stand. One was a small 8 pt about as wide as his ears and spindly. He was a whopping 3 ft from the base of my tree. Just couldn't spend my only buck tag on him. Shawn saw a whopper out in the field right at dark. Things were just getting good and unfortunately Shawn had a family emergency and we had to pull up and head home. Long drive for 3 sits on stand. Heading back out in November.
We had great weekend in Indiana, saw a ton of deer most we saw from the truck, we saw some really big deer. Farm we were on had just picked the beans, hunting there was very slow, by sat p.m., all tthe corn fields had been picked, deer flocked to those fields by the hundreds!
I smoked a big doe on fri. nite it was the only deer I saw while on stand, 18yd shot, 25yd recovery watched her wobble then fall. First pass through with a stick, always close, but that 550gr, carbon+woodsman combo, whistled right through her and 5" into some very dry hard ground.
Our farm was all beans, surrounding farms all corn, deer covered up those farms, beautiful land down there, going back for rut hunt next year. Todd
Chris S big six! Nice job.
Chris S,
I knew we had that one 6 point in the state. That's a true trophy here in the land of 4 pointers.
I'll be posting my trophy fawn pics next week. My truck's on the fritz so I'll be hunting out of the Toyota Corolla micro-car. Be fun to stuff a deer in that one :)
Good luck all!
