Hi! Im new around here and i just purchased a vintage 1970's slimline corsair recurve. Im new to traditional archery and archery in general (i have a compound but only for a year or so) i wanted to try my hand at traditional as well as the techy stuff. i feel more at home with the thought of traditional stuff though.
Even though i have no intention of hunting with my little bow, i do enjoy target shooting. i hope to gather lots of information and learn from the best and friendliest. :)
Any begining advice would be wonderful! i always have an open ear for advice. :)

Welcome to the forum !
Dan
Welcome. I had a Wing Corsair Slimline target bow in the 70's. I think it was like $35.00 new in 73 or 74. Mine was 66 inches long and 35 pounds at 28". The Hoyt stick on is a great rest for that bow, I shot target archery and used a springy rest along with a 30 inch stabalizer and was able to shoot in the high 270's at the indoor 300 shoots. It is very accurate for what was considered a beginners target bow at the time. Just have fun with it.
Welcome aboard! :campfire:
God bless.
Welcome to the trad world, glad you are here.

A bit of advice that will shorten the learning curve, get your self the Masters of the barebow dvd series and you will get leaps and bounds ahead of the game.
Good shooting :archer2:
Welcome to the campfire! :campfire:
Wow! I can't get over how many people popped up to say hi! Thanks for the awesome warm welcome. I'm so excited to meet my bow. Haha. Just picked up some basic supplies tonight and was so excited!
Thank you. Now I know it's going to be fun hanging out here.
Yaa basic supplies are always good.Armguard, bowstringer, shooting tab or glove that fits nicely, string wax, quiver, bowsquare, nockpoints, crimping tool.
A fletching jig and fletch tape and 100 feathers are essential tools as well IMO.
The DVD mentioned allready (Masters of the Barebow) is a good place to start as far as getting of to a good start with good shooting form and or technique.
Setting your brace hieght correctly is always important and nock point hieght.
Have fun!
Welcome. :wavey:
It's nice to have another soon to be trad addict around the campfire! :campfire:
Glad to have you as our new friend :wavey: :campfire:
Welcome.
Howdy,
Plan on having way more fun missing the bullseye with a trad bow than hitting it with a compound.... enjoy the journey !! :campfire:
Froggy
What Froggy just said is certainly true (I didn't even start archery until I was 46 (except a tad bit as a little kid), and then when I switched to trad gear (about 8-10 years ago) it was a whole new game - of much more fun and feeling of accomplishment (even when failing - LOL). Let yourself love and enjoy the fascination of the arc of the arrow, and everything else will come with time and practice. Welcome aboard from this ol' hoss.
You guys are great. I uses to have what I believe was an old bear fiberglass bow when I was little. I was a pretty good shoot when I managed to whip up a decent form. Hehe.
Thanks again guys.
Good morning and welcome.
Girls smell funny! lol

Welcome.
Such warm responses.
I went and got some supplies yesterday. My bow shops on Friday and so super stoked.
I was at bass pro yesterday. ( the only place remotly near me that sells trad stuff) and was looking at the recurves they have on the wall. I was amazed at how incredibly light they were.
I was looking at the pse razorback because it was what I was originally intending to get since I'm new and wanted a really light bow and light poundage. I was so excited. I can't wait for my slimeline to come in!!!!
Odd ball question. Are limbs interchangeable? For example if I get the razerback and want to later upgrade to heavier bow is that possiable? Or are limbs proprietary and only work with specifics brands? Perhaps there's a weight limit? (probably)
you can get some from the manufacter.that will fit their riser.welcome and dont be afraid to ask for help
Most of the time, you have to get a whole nother bow, I think that if you just wanted to get another set of limbs for your bow, they would have to be made by the same manufacturer and be for your model bow.
Now that i've said that, there are what they call ILF limbs, I think it stands for International Limb Fitting, and I believe that if you have an ILF bow, any other ILF limbs will interchange with your riser and vice versa.
Here are just a few reputable companies that you will want to contact for a hard copy catalog of great traditional archery supplies...

Welcome, always awesome to have another woman in the sport!!
Yeah it seems I'm always the odd duck in whatever hobby I do. Other then crafting anyways. But I like it that way. ;)
Thanks for the advice. Gosh I want my bow so badly!
Welcome, you are on a wonderful website.Tradagngers are very helpfull and nice folks.any questions for these guys feel free to fire away.WELCOME!
Enjoy the new journey and welcome to this crazy addiction. Before you know it there may be several different bows on the wall. Let's see:indoor, outdoor, and 3d's are the minimum I'm envisioning.
Hahaha if I really like it I know I'll have at least two different recurves and a long bow. Hehe. That is of course if I can afford it. But well see. Man Friday seems so far away! That's when my bow ships. And even then I don't have arrows for it. :( but I'll give it some tlc and go from there. :)
There are a bunch of trad archers/hunters in FL that I'm sure would be tickled to hook you up with some loaner (or maybe even keeper) arrows to help you get started. Perhaps some one will come on here (if they are in FL they could get them to you quicker). Not sure if there is a Florida Forum but there may be (check the Forum Home list, down near the bottom for state/club forums also). I have a (lady) friend who used to be real active on here (before a serious health bout) that is in touch with me now and then and I'll touch base with her. She may feel inclined (again - she & her husband used to help many, a heck of a shooter too) or could point you towards someone. No harm in contacting her at any rate.
Have you had the pleasure of eating any wild game?
Like frog legs? They are fun to hunt with a bow and very tasty.
Being from Fla. you have gators that live in the same places that frogs do. I have heard that it tastes good too.
I love wild rabbit and squirrel!
I hope your new bow is everything you want it to be.
God bless,Mudd
I had my first gator meat (stew) this Spring (courtesy of Cory on a turkey hunt) and it was de-lice-e-ous!
I fired off a e-mail to my old friend - no guarantee - her name is Dina in case she makes contact or refers it to someone else. She was known on here as Country Gal and then later GatorGal (She arrowed a couple of gators) She is a "Hoot" and a fine person (her husband too). I took the liberty of giving her your name and home web site from your bio. (Hope you don't mind.)
Be nice though - her husband is a *huge*, highly effective, retired Police Officer (and a teddy bear) - LOL. She's a little retired school teacher. Everybody on here and at shoots loved them, individually and as a couple.
Be careful, you will find out that you will need a bow for asunny day, cloudy day, hotsunny day, rainy, windy, snowy, wait a minute ....
Those are all of my reasons(excuses)to the wife for all of the bows on the wall.
As said you just cannt have one...
Welcome and enjoy the fun
Later....Buzz
Welcome. Since you live in Florida look up Traditional Bowhunters of Florida and you will really enjoy yourself with that organization. They have a website listing here on Tradgang. You can get alot of help from them also locally.
I believe Dina was (and may still be) a long-time member of TBF I know she used to compeat in their shoots, etc.
Depending on your draw weight and length I may have a few arrows that would get you started. I've also got the Masters of the Barebow series that I'd be happy to loan out to ya for a while.
If you want to get REALLY serious. Rod Jenkins who is one of the stars of the Masters of the barebow will be in South Fl next month for a 2 day clinic. (Shameless plug. I need folks to sign up!! LOL)
thanks for all the heads up! i'll check out the club listings (if any)
Im having trouble getting my draw length accuratly checked. its between 25 and 27"
I have an inbound Wings Slimline corsair. :D its really lightweight though. only 20# at a 28" draw length...so i assume i'll be pulling 17-19#'s max probably. just a rough guess from my newb self. :)
i'm also a newbie but welcome to what seems like a good bunch of people
Don't think I've got any arrows that light weight. Might give Big Jim a call. He is a sponsor here. He did have some 15-35 spined carbons on sale a while back.
As far as local clubs down that way. Look up Lee County Archers. They are a very active club and have shoots of some sort several weekends a month. Their range is off of Bayshore road in North Fort Myers. Nalle Grade if your familiar with the area.
Hope this helps
Brad
Welcome from Kentucky
thanks swampdrummer! i actually went to the lee county archers last week. couldnt go this week due to the rain. it was under water the time i did go, and it hadnt really rained. id hate to see where it was this week. Hahaha
just wish there was one a little bit closer. ^_^
Hi Oops and Kentucky! thanks for the warm greeting!
Welcome Irene. Don't pay much attention to "Killdeer". She can probably outshoot most on here. Even if she can't outshoot ya, she loves traditional archery and is wise in the ways of the woods. If you are looking for help, all you need do is ask on this site. There is not a better group of people on the net. :wavey:
LOL, yeah Lee County archers range is kinda low out that way. The county has declared Nalle Grade a "disaster" area so they might come in and raise the roads... LOL. Locals just shake their heads...... I don't know of any other clubs down that way but there may be some.
I did some digging around today and I may have some arrows that will work for you. A friend gave me a pile of arrows and I don't know what they spine out at but they shoot fine out of my wifes little 20# long bow. Only problem is that they are only 26" long. If your drawing 25" you'll be fine. If your at 27" well. You can see the problem.... :p
Another option for arrows at your low poundage would be to just build your own. 1/4 inch dowel rods work fine. You'd have to jump into it and buy nocks and feathers and points and a cheap fletching jig buts its all fairly easy. Just something to think about.
If you want to borrow the masters of the barebow dvd's Your more than welcome to them. I've only watched them about a 100 times. :D I can mail them out to you if you'd like.
Brad
Welcome to the campfire, glad to have another lady around to keep us wild boys in line.I think it was wearing Killie out.You will find some of the most knowledgeable and respectful people here.Enjoy!
if you get a chance post a pic of yourself on this thread, and check out the mugs of some of the guy and gals you will be hearing from.

Well I went to a pro shop today and had myself measured. He said it was between 25-26. Lol. I guess it's however far I draw. Guess I'm not as consistent as I thought I was.
I don't think there are any other ranges. Maybe in lauderdale but that's an even longer drive. Haha.
I wouldn't mind giving the arrows a try. Obviously I won't shoot my hand off if it's too short.

Otherwise, thanks guys for all the heads up. I will Try and add a pic if I can find a decent one. ;)
lol, Ok, I'll fletch up a half dozen of them and we can figure out how to get them to you. They will at least work to get you started.
Irene, You ok with yellow and purple fletches? I'd hate to fltech them up with colors you absolutely hate! :-)
Thanks so much swampdrummer! Yellow and purple sound extremely awesome!! Thank you so much! You can send me a private message or I can to discuss things further. Sheesh. I think I need to hit goodwill to find a pair of pants to destroy to make a quiver! You guys ate so totally awesome!!! <3 I'm in live with this forum and it's kindness!!!
LOL, If you stick around this forum you'll see. Thats just what we do.... Its an amazing place.... I'll get to making up some arrows in the morning....
This place makes me feel very blessed! :D
You found a great site, with some of the greatest people you will ever meet. The knowledge and generosity on this site amaze me daily.
Good luck with your new bow!
Welcome aboard. Always nice to have a nice lady around. Lately we have just had to make due with Illbeer.
Don't try to pick on Killie that way, Charles - she'll "Chief Thundercloud" all over you - again! :D ;)
Glad to see things coming together, Irene, with the arrows and all. Being in touch with Dina now will be a big help. She can tell you more in a single e-mail than I forget every year (come to think of it - that's a whole lot - LOL). There are some skinny Easton Aluminum Arrows called Jazz that are very "purty" Purple and silver (that look like a cosmic sky). The best part is they are very good for beginning ladies (and kids) drawing light weight bows. We used to recommend them a lot for those shooters when I worked in a archery shop. Best of luck.
I agree with ber! Don't pick on killdeer. Us ladies might gang up. Haha!
Joking aside I've been really blessed to find this place. Actually the seller of my bow recommended thus site. I'm glad he did. :) I'll thank him when the bow arrives and I have to leave him feedback. It's been a hoot reading everything here.
