Was thinking of making my first stand appearance tonight.
but....
its 82 degrees
sw wind at 20 dies down to 10 at 6 pm (perfect for my stand)
and is supposed to rain about 2 hours after sunset.
What would you do?
What would I do? You're kidding right? I've seen those Kansas whitetails.
Never know what will walk by.
If the wind is right I know where I'd be...
Hunt crazy man! If there is rain moving in within hours you can bet the critters will be active. Besides, its hunting and why wouldnt you go?
I think I will head out at about 5. Sucks wearing orange though since muzzleloader guys can hunt also.
Thats ok though A orange man with a bow in a tree can still kill!
Hmmm I'd have to think about that one ....NOT but then again I'm a huntnfool !!!
My first day will be a week from Friday
RAIN OR SHINE!!
I think I would be in the stand.
Will give a report when I get back.
Isnt it always windy in Kansas anywho? Thats what I have always heard.
Statistics alone grant that the more time you spend in the woods the more game you will encounter. I care little what the weather is like. When I can hunt I do. No matter what. Its not like the game goes back inside and watches football when the rain comes down.
Maybe this wasn't a serious question and you're just pulling my chain :)
HUNT.....
To hunt or not to hunt? That is not even a question. Get out there and show the muzzleloaders how it is done.
Click the heels of your ruby slippers together three times, and get out there. Better yet, I'll try it and wish I was in Kansas.! Good luck!
Man if it was 82 here we would call it a cold front!
If I had land or a place close to My house, I would be out hunting... If it's hot out, I'll be looking for water holes, streams, ponds and rivers.
Was a good night in the stand. Then again when is it not? I did not see any deer, but I was amused for about 30 minutes watching the fattest squirrel I have seen in a long time.
James
Hunt every chance I get, as long as the wind is right. Shawn
Can't shoot one in sitting in the house. :p
I guess I disagree with everyone else. I just will not hunt under those conditions. The biggest reason is I process deer my self and very slowly. I'm trying to learn to be faster about the process and last year I did make gains, but I'm still not there yet.
I also process my own deer... I would be hunting!! Next Friday is the day for me too. I will be like the mailman; rain, snow, sleet or shine...
:biglaugh: :biglaugh: What was the question.
I have skipped a couple of afternoon hunts just because of conditions just like that. Then there have been times I just wanted to go so badly that I went knowing full well I had no intention of dropping the string on anything.
I am not going to take the chance that if I were to put an arrow through one that it would get lost because of heat spoiling the meat before I could find it or the rain washing away the sign, again leaving me with spoiled meat before I could get to it.
There will be other days!!!
Quirky!! huh? But I am what I am.
God bless,Mudd
I have not written about my hunt this year; because early on I fell end over end and rolling for a hundred yards down a mountain; broke some ribs; busted myself up pretty good; and could not even pull my bow back for a week.
I have eyes - used them to find an elk trail; which at one point crossed a road. The elk were using it in daylight every 5 days.
Knowing this I waited for that next rotation - and on the fifth day: I got to my stand -- and the road had been freshly graded; and the grader and a bulldozer and its trailer were parked right on the trail.
Its a long road...to pick that one spot to park.
I have permission on private property for hunting deer and elk; and the owner took off for a trip; and the neighbors let loose dogs; flattened a tire( cut off the stem) gunned the engines on their vehicles as they drove by; yelled and screamed ( yes screamed) in an effort to keep me from killing 'their lawn ornaments'.
Oh yeah - this is land connected to National Forest land and is 150 miles from what people would call a city.
Deer were feeding in a weed infested old pasture; and that got all cut down and the deer and elk stopped feeding on it.
Another hunter saw me walk into an area and spent the next three days walking all over it from dawn to dusk. He saw elk and deer running off (from their beds); but never got a shot; or sat down for over 5 minutes ( by his own admission). That moved the animals out of that planned opportunity.
He was happy to have seen some elk and deer.
A tree fell in the forest smacking my treestand over my bear bait off the tree and into stand heaven.
The bears though are feeding on every fruit tree down low on private land. In the dark.
Wolves are keeping all animals on edge. The animals go down to private land and hang out there because they won't be hunted there- until the opener of rifle season when they brag about shooting deer and elk from their windows and porches.
Weather has been hot; the animals are moving at night with the full moon.
And you want to turn down a chance to hunt - WHY again please ????????
Wind in Kansas - you bet! I moved there in 1989, moved out in 1992. Great state great wildlife department (but again, I'm biased). I love to squirrel hunt also. When I learned that KS' squirrel season started in May and ran all winter I was escatic. However, my favorite days are windless ones so I can hear and see a squirrel move in the leaves. The average daily wind in Newton Kansas is 13 MPH. Most mornings I would get up to go squirrely hunting and the wind was already going at it! lots of squirrels, almost no squirrel hunters, but pristine calm days were very rare.

I was in Garden City for a week last October and the wind blew about 30 mph. every day. I didn't think it ever stopped. A guy that lives there said that it snows sideways because the wind blows so much.
