Title: Fall day in Alaska's interior
Post by: ArcticArcher on September 21, 2010, 12:46:00 AM
Was out on Sunday, looking for moose and/or caribou.  Beautiful day and warm for this time of year got up to about 60 degrees, but it was chilly starting out, frost on the ground, ice on the edges of ponds.  Didn't see any moose or caribou, but hada a great time.  Was able to take a couple of ptarmigan and some beautiful pics of the country I am blessed to be able to hunt in.

Nick, man!

You aren't kidding, that really is some wonderful country! I don't think anything, anywhere else could compare.

You are, indeed, a fortunate hunter.

Where wer you Nick?  Looks like the Denali, and you are right it is tooooo warm right now.  We were at our cabin just south of Paxson, killed some grouse and got a lot of grayling, but the moose aren't talking yet where we were.

Actually Bill I was just south of Paxson also, Meier Lake area.  Trying to fill subsistence tags. Still going to try and fill the state tag in the Fairbanks management area, have until the end of the month and then another chance in Nov.

Absolutely beautiful.

I lived there from 85-88. I miss walking in true wilderness where seeing another human almost never happens. What range it that?

Thanks for sharing.  My brother lives in Eagle River.  He just came back from a week long hunt.  They had a good time but not many sightings.

Mr. ArcticArcher,
Didn't realize there were any other Trad Hunters in the Delta Junction area.
Was out looking for Grizz yesterday but only saw 3 Sharptail Grouse.  Nice day nevertheless.
Best Wishes

Nick,  We must have passed each other several times.  Our cabin is 12 miles south of Meier, on top of Hogan Hill.  Next time you are in the neighborhood, give me a shout.  We are smack in the middle of the designated no ATV area and can hunt right from the cabin.
Anyhow,,the coffee is always on and if our gate is open I will be there.

Nice shooting on the ptarmigan Nick, have they started to grow white feathers for the winter? Thanks for posting those beautiful pics of where our Texas northers come from. Down here in north TX we will finally have frosty mornings and 60 degree highs around the day all those turkeys are roasting in ovens across the USA. Where you live is at the top of the list for many of us. I can tell from your pics and what you say about it you appreciate being able to live, hunt (and fish!) in Alaska. Thanks for the photos, and good luck with the moose and caribou hunts.

Thanks for the pics Nick.  It is still 97 and 98 degrees here in LA.  Anytime you feel like sending more of that scenery, I am up for it.

Thanks,

Billy

Not sure of the exact range, but the river below them in the Gakona River

Forgive the intrusion but if you were looking northeast from where the pic was taken into the headwaters of the Gakona those would be the Olgalvie Mountains.  They kind of are the start of the Alaska Range that continues west.  Denali is in that range to the west.
