Last night (Sunday) was part of a doe only hunt here in Michigan, any weapon allowed. It lasts about 4-5 days. I went out and decided to bowhunt.
I sat on a hedge row and was enjoying a nice evening and got busted by a couple of different doe groups because I must smell like a pile of trash to them! They are always sneezing at me. Anyway, there are so many deer around that you just can't tell where and when they will travel through and the wind wasn't steady so it makes it tough, especially from the ground. I just do the best I can.
Suddenly I hear a gunshot up the row and my grip tightens a bit on the longbow. Then I hear the thundering of feet coming toward me. 2 small deer pass and then an adult runs in front of me at no more than 10 feet full sprint. She darts to her right (on my right side) and clears the hedge row about 8-10 yds away. As she rounds the pine stand at full stride I stretch my neck and see my arrow is sticking out, quartering away and through the chest!
I am not one to normally shoot a running deer, but there it was. A 30 yd recovery and good blood trail. Not bad.
But when I looked closer I saw guts protruding out below my arrow which was quartering forward through both lungs. The gunshot I heard put a bullet clean through the paunch with a 300 Mag. I found the hunter floundering for a sign or blood trail and told him I shot his deer and he was very thankful. Little did he know how thankful I was that he accepted it back! STANKY!
So although I was disappointed that it was stinky and tainted, at least the guy gutted it (I helped a little...gag) and took it home. I patted myself on the back both for that shot and for taking the wounded deer down (although unknowingly). I smile every time I replay it in my mind!!
So what shots have you made that were rediculous looking back??

Tradbow 1 Rifle 0.
Well done !!
I LOVE it!!!
thanks, you can see the blood from my arrow hole and below it, the intestine hanging...yuck.
Do you guys not have to wear orange when the season is open to guns?
That's a great story. Thanks for sharing. Not many people get the opportunity to be in that situation, much less pull it off.
How cool is this? Way!! I'd say..
You done good Robin Hood!!!!
Thanks for sharing with us.
God bless,Mudd
CONGRATS ON A GREAT SHOT, It surely makes you feel good when it all comes together;;
thanks, and no we don't have to wear orange unless you are carrying a gun. I wear it when moving, my hat turns inside out for walking around. Sitting I turn it back to camo. Seems backward huh?
Well-done!
Great shot for sure!!!
I was not as brave as you.
Where I`m at, guys were "clearing the fields".
Several guns opening up at the same time, on the doe groups that had been coming out all summer.
Never seen anything like it.
Great Shot!
better check the regs, you are required to wear hunter orange even if bowhunting..
Maybe he took that awful looking orange off for the photo?
I had an experience that was simular in nature. One hunt i will remember for a long time. I had killed alot of deer before this one, but none that will stick out in my mind like that.
Here is a link to the story I wrote just after I shot the deer.

Some things just work out. Good thing you got an arrow in her.
Only one thing about that hunter orange rule that I am not sure on. Turkey season is open this year at the same time. No orange for gun or bow turkey hunting. So if you have a doe tag and turkey tag in your pocket and a bow, what are you hunting and do you need the orange? I had an orange hat to move around, but stashed it when in my stand. I didn't think it stood much of a change at a turkey decked out in orange.
Hat's off bro. Great shot.
Congrats!
bow and gun season for deer is open now in Michigan ??
Congrats on the shot.
Michigan allows you to be out there with all the leaves on the trees in camo, while someone else is shooting a high power rifle???
Seems risky.
Great shooting!

yup, my hat turns inside out to orange. I had a doe and turkey tag so went camo while sitting though. With X-bow launching devices being legal, I always move with orange on now and use a flashlight all the time in low light or dark! Not that I want to be the first, but Michigan has had a stellar record over the past few years for deaths due to mistaken identity. I know it can and does happen, so I take precautions, but things have seemed to be pretty safe around here for a while now. Over the past 20 years I have never felt fear while hunting and I hunt a lot...both public, and more recently private land.
good shot buddy.that is one really cool story.your bow took down what a 300 mag couldn't.good job, steve :clapper: :archer2:
