The bears on my baits have been very greedy this year. I thought (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Shortbldtr/NH%202010%20bear/IM0003482.jpg)

Not fair your holding out on us. :nono:
That bear looks HUDGE.
Oh boy, the killer is at it again!! :clapper:
On with the story.... :campfire:
It is actually two different bears.. The bigger one I've been chasing for the last three years...
:campfire:
Dont hold out on us anymore :nono:
Good things are worth waiting for Paul , like holding out for that big boar for 3 years but don't make us wait 3 years for the story. Please!!!!!!!
The trail cams showed the bigger bears mostly after 8pm(legal shooting time ending 7:20 )and early am. The visits by the bigger bears were getting earlier each day. Resting the stand for 5 days I was settled in at 3 pm Friday afternoon with a honey burn going. There have been two 150# +/- bears hitting the bait just about every afternoon. That afternoon they didn't show. Weather and wind where perfect. Quiet, clear sky, with a slight breeze in my face. At 6pm a Kestel landed on my bow hanger hunting the chickadees that had been entertaining me.As we looked each other over from the space of a couple of feet I wished him good hunting.
At 6:39 on the camcorder a large black head materialized from the brush to the right of the bait.....
:banghead:
Paul,
Bears should FEAR you by this point!
Where is this hunt happening? I look forward to hearing "the rest of the story!"
Daryl
Boy's I'll get you the rest after a nights sleep. Photobucket just took 45 minutes worth of work. :banghead:
Dabnabit!!! Darned hold-outs!!!
:help: :wavey:  :notworthy: :archer: :coffee: :goldtooth:
Come on PV ya gotta give up the goods!!
Hello, hello...anybody out there ? Love bear stories.

And sent it somewhere I can't find it!
Back to the story:
The bear committed to the bait quickly. He was favoring his right forearm. Not the big boy but big enough. I had decided before season I would take a large(300# +/-)bear if the opportunity arose. He sat down with his back to me at the barrel for a few minutes then turned and walked a few steps to the honey burn and lay down facing me. He lay there for quite a while( the video recorded thirteen minutes of footage before the shot)satisfiying his sweet tooth with honey, chocolate and granola. The bear then stood, turned, slightly quartering away, and looked up at the beaver suspended over his head. The grizzly tipped arrow was on it's way. Took the bear high behind the shoulder. He hesitated for a moment then headed out slowly. The bear stopped at 30 yards or so. He was out of sight but I did hear a few deep breaths a few minutes after the shot. Not the sound I was hoping for. It was now dark and when in doubt back out.
After a night that we all dread my freinds Jay and Erin and the boys Jacob and Joseph and I were back to take up the sparse blood trail...
The fleching section of the arrow was found 30 yards from the hit and was broke off 20 " from the head.About 150 yards from the hit we found the rest of the arrow. I did not get a picture as I had other things on my mind.Right about then I was wishing we had one of Jays excellent bear hounds along.Thankfully a few yards further we found his first bed and a few yards after that his last... (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Shortbldtr/NH%202010%20bear/IMG_1205.jpg)
The bear is a few feet in front of Jay and Erin.
After doing a little clearing....
This land is cut over with about fifteen year old regrowth. Although the bear was less than a 1/4 mile from the road it took us three hours to retrieve it with a fourwheeler and winch.

Thanks guys!!!!!
The bear weighed 292# Prime coat for this early in the fall. His front right elbow was broken. No marks on the hide so what happened to him is a mystery to me. The arrow passed through the top of both lungs.
In NH you have to call the game warden when you check in a bear and if requested too you will bring the officer to the kill site. By the time we got the bear to the truck the game warden Greg Elllison was there to check the bear and remove a tooth for aging. How old I will find out next year. I have to say that everyone from the NH Fish and Game I have dealt with has been professional, helpfull and extremely courteous.
While I still have a couple more bear hunts this year in MB and VT this guy
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Shortbldtr/NH%202010%20bear/IM0000522.jpg)

Great job Paul and still smiling after getting the bear out of the tight spot. Those two boys will never forget that adventure.Take care Kip
Ya thats a big bear no doubt!! Great hunt, thanks for taking us along!
For a minute there the title to the story led me to believe this was going to be a police story, LOL, I can say that being retired from the force.
Great story and photos and even a better looking bear.
Nice bear Paul! I bet that one didn't fall off the back of the truck on the way home.
Fantastic!
Paul, super job  That bear's ALOT bigger than the bear I had in the back of that Toyota :)
:notworthy: :archer2:
I am not familiar with bears but that sure looks like a great one ....congratulations
Excellent Paul! :clapper:
congrats on a really nice bear, steve
Thanks guys! Glad you enjoyed the story.
George:
The bear was trussed up like a Thanksgiving turkey and I didn't have a custom cargo carrier like some folks I know....
Kip:
Having the boys with us made it a special day for sure!
Nice job Paul. Thanks for sharing the story and pics. Where you chasing bears in VT?
Beautiful shot on a beautiful animal. Congrats
Way to go Paul! I think you shoulda drug the story out like you drug out the bear- more slowly! Great animal.
Nice Bear, and great story and recovery!!!!!
thanks for sharing
Dude! I really want to shoot a bear this year!
Very very nice bear Paul and congratulations! Did you kill it with that nifty takedown longbow you built?
Excellent job Bro!!
Nice going Paul. Congrat's.
Cogratulations on a great bear Paul! Very nice.. Great story and I am glad to hear the hunt really came together for you. Sounds like the big one will have to wait one more year and he is sure to be a monster! Hopefully Manitoba and Vermont will treat you just as well. Good luck!
-Jay
VTer:
Lunenburg area
Marty:
Thought about it but I'm hunting 3 different states at the moment and not home much.
Also there may be another chapter to this story. I've some freinds,a father/son team, that have been hunting with me that have yet to see a bear although the baits are getting hammered. I'm hoping that, like some Floridian I know, they can pull it off at the last moment
Hey Bill!
Yes It's the bow I had in Quebec this year.I've taken quite a liking to her.
Jay:
That sharpening system is the cat's a@@. Washed the broadhead off and a quick pass on the wheel and it's shaving hair. Can't thank you enough bro!! Good hunting!
Returned to Manitoba last week, where I hunted last spring, with two good friends for some of the best cooking to be found in any bear camp.

and if we could pry ourselves away from the table perhaps a bit of bear hunting....
We would be hunting ag fields as there is no baiting in the park in the fall.
First night on stand the bugs, that had not been an issue in the spring, where out in force. Having no thermacell or bug net made the bugs happy.
At 6 pm a nice 250# +/- black bear came in and hung around for ten minutes or so. Captured some good video. If he had been a color bear my hunt may have been over early.
With 30 minutes of hunting time left the bugs had taken the day. I packed up and lowered my bow to the ground...
Awesome, wish I had gotten my bear tag for this year, as I had one come in behind me while in my blind the other morning.
Too bad you can't use bait, here...
That banana cream pie would SURELY pull in a trophy!
Sounds like you are having a fine season. Here's to finding a special color phase bear.
Don't know about that pie bringing in a trophy Darryl but it got me back for a return trip
Hope your fall season goes well.
..A last look around before climbing down. There was a black colored, brown snouted bear on the same trail as before.I raised the bow back up not nocking an arrow as I assumed it was the bear from earlier. The bear could see the bow going up but due to the cover could not see where it went.I was hoping to spook the bear off without giving my postition away.Bear stopped and sat down for a few minutes then took the same path to the bait as before. Not really paying any attention to the bear I'm standing there squashing bugs as quietly as possible hoping he won't be there long. After what seemed like an hour but was probably only a few minutes another bear appeared under my tree.
Wait a minute! That looks like the bear from earlier?
I look back at the bear at the bait
OH MY GOD!!!
This bear is sitting down behind the upright barrel scooping out of the hole in the top.
My primary goal for this hunt was a color phase bear of which there are many in the area but also any black over 400#
This bear easily surpassed that..
Now how to nock an arrow without the bear at the base of my tree spooking. Well I almost made it. The bear spooked, spooking the larger bear but neither ran far. As the big bear came back to the bait he gave me a good appreciation for how large he was.He once again sat down behind the barrel and fed. The smaller bear inched closer to 20 feet from the larger bear. The big bear came around from behind the barrel and turned broadside.....
And the saga continues!!
Well done Paul. Adam still talks about the Bear he ate at Denton!!
Congrats on a nice bear.
Lets here the story. :banghead: Your going to make us wait again.
Not long Ben I have to get up early and go hunting....
The grizzly tipped arrow (same broadhead that took the first bear in the thread) was on it's way. The lumenock showed the hit as it passed through.Low and tight to the leg.The bear reacted with a grunt and ran a short way before stopping. A few seconds later I heard some rustling. It was the other bear running up to the bait.Hearing nothing else after a 5 minute wait I lowered the bow and took the climbing stand down. The smaller bear was still at the bait 15 yards away. The arrow was a few feet away from the bear. As I took a few steps towards the arrow the bear let me know that the bait was now his. Shined my light on the arrow to check the sign and walked out.
Even when you're confident of the shot it still is a long night with unrecovered game in the woods.
Back at first light with my hunting companions Don and Regina and outfitter Brian Forbes we took up the trail. No blood between the hit and 70 yards where we found.....
The recovery team...
Fortunately we were able to get the rhino right to the bear. It took a tilt bed and all the four of us had to get him loaded.
There is no scale at the lodge so no weight but the hide measures 7'3" from nose to base of tail(unstretched) and the skull measured 20 1/4" green.
My friends also tagged out as the week progressed while I checked baits, called elk and glassed some very nice deer and bears.
Tagging out early has it's perks:) :) :)
What a beauty  :notworthy:
Congrats again Paul!!
What a brute!!
Paul your the "Man" !Congrats !
Man oh man Paul! You've had a career year with your bear hunting! Congratulations again!
WOW! What a brute. :notworthy:
That is sweet!!!
2 bears!!!!
Brett
What a pair of beasties Paul! People say bear are tough to judge the size of. When you see one like that you don't have to think twice! What amazes me is the body on that second one. 20+ head and it still is dwarfed by the body.
Paul can you hear this from La.
WOW! Nice job Paul!
Awesome. Good stories too. What is next?
   WOW what a bear ,congrats. And like it-m-grow said what next?
Two brutes for sure. Well done!
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Paul, good for you, my friend. You helped a lot of us on our first bear hunt with Bear Quest and it's time for your reward. Congrats again.
Denny Shick
2 GREAT bears!!!  :notworthy: Congrats sir! I hope the rest of your season continues on this streak. :clapper:
That's a beauty Paul. Congrat's.
Congrats on 2 great bruins. Love the white patch on the bigger one's chest. Congrats!!
Way to go Paul....that's a beast!!!!! :clapper: :archer2:
David
Thanks guys! Glad you enjoyed the story and pic's. Been my privilege to hunt/shoot and enjoy some fine camps with many of you.
As for whats next I've got a pocket full of deer tags and a bunch of bows to build.
Going to put some big bear mojo in them for the guys that will be hunting bears with them next year. Hope they all get bigger bears than these
Also the wife has been complaining about the lack of elk meat in the freezer and there is always that elusive color phase bear.......
Good hunting,
Paul
Great Bear !!
GLENN
Great job Paul wish I could have been there to see the bear up close.
Wish you were there also Jim!!
Maybe the next one?
Paul, Good on you. Congrats!
You are having way too much fun. Nice bears. Gary
