The server at the email link given keeps rejecting my email. I am posting my email here:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was saddened to read of the passing of Mr. Glenn St. Charles. It is a day that I have known to be inevitable, but I hate change.
It is the passing not only of a man, but of an era. I first shot a bow in 1964, and grew up reading of the accomplishments of Fred Bear and Mr. St Charles.
I was encouraged to call him, when I purchased a copy of "Bows on the Little Delta", but am somewhat shy and retiring in the face of such a personage, and regretfully, never did.
Thankfully, I am sure that this great man never had any doubts that he had made giant steps in making the paths of archers everywhere a bit easier to follow. There is honor in the path of the archer, that he helped to illuminate, and inspire us to achieve.
He did not need me to tell him that.
What makes me glad today, is that as he passed, I was shooting 3D with a young man and his daughter. I lent him my Bitz, after setting it up for his arrow shafts, gave the young girl encouragement and pride in her shooting, had a grand time. When we got back out of the woods, I mentored another young man who wants very badly to shoot, and I gave his father good information on getting started and links to more information, measuring his son's draw length and allowing him to shoot my two longbows and arrows.
I feel that this would have made my mentors smile, should they take a backward glance. The era ends, and it also lives on.
I pray for strength for the family, in their sorrow, and solace in that the joyous accomplishments of the man, and the inspiration that they instill in those following, will live for as long as a bow bends to launch an arrow, or a human heart aspires to a mountaintop.
Blessings and peace,
Kathryn M. Collister
I am hoping that, should I not be able to find a viable email link, that this could be read by one of the St. Charles family, and it be understood that my heartfelt respect and admiration are included.
Killdeer
It's a sad day for traditional archery...
A great gracious man. I had the fortune to meet him a couple of times. My prayers go to his family.
Art
very sad news indeed
:notworthy: :pray:
This will give us all something to contemplate this fall as we pursue our quarry of choice. Thanks Glen and my condolences to St. Charles Family.
Goodbye to a fine man, and a REAL gentleman of our sport. Rest in peace, Glenn...
I plan on putting one up toward the stars tonight in honor of a great man...
Froggy
We lost a good man and real role model.
Got my first bow from him at Northwest Archery many years ago. A real loss to the archery world. If you haven't read it "Bows on the Little Delta" is a great book by a great man.
Condolences and prayers for the St. Charles family. May God Rest His Soul. He has given so much of himself throughout his life to promote and preserve archery and bowhunting. Without his early efforts, bowhunting would not have been accepted as a viable form of killing game. Thanks you Mr. St. Charles for your selfless devotion, allowing me the opportunity to pursure game with my stick and string. God Bless, and God Speed on your journey towards eternity.
This is a sad passing of one of our living legends. Fortunately the fire he started has been kept burning in all of us here young and old.
About 5-6 years ago while visiting my daughter in Seattle I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours with Glenn. It is something I will always treasure.My prayers and condolences to his family.
Truly a sad day for all that knew Glenn and his family. He was a true icon for archery.
Travel safe now Glenn... thanks for your efforts and I still love your book.
ak.
I was able to buy a hard bound copy of "Bows on the Little Delta" and he signed it for me a couple years ago. I was also able to sit with him for a few minutes, one of the highlights of by bowhunting life. He will be missed - but never forgotten.
God Bless his family.
Thank you Glenn and God Bless.
Prayers for a great man. :pray: :pray: :pray:
My prayers and thoughts go out to the family.
God Speed for an Archery Legend and prayers for the family.
Bows on the Little Delta will be "relived" again in the Great Hunting Grounds in the sky.
Winterhawk1960
Even though we never met he will be missed. We all owe Glenn a big Thank You and a prayer.
Was sadden to receive a call this afternoon telling me of Glenn's passing. My daughter had baked a batch of Margret's 'cardboard cookies' yesterday, and we talked about sending a few to Glenn. Killdeer's post was very fitting. He will be missed.
Craig
Others have expressed so many wonderful thoughts and sentements. Just an absolute titan in our history. So many contributions.
If you haven't already get a copy of "Bows On The Little Delta."
I was aware of how sick Mr St Charles was. I have been communicating with Suzanne for a couple of weeks while ordering arrows. Suzanne said that he was diagnosed with lung cancer. This was the communciation from her to me:
Tuesday, we found out that dad has lung cancer. That explains the fast decline. Spent today with him. He has lots of support. 24 hour care (hospice as of today) as well as all 5 of his kids taking turns hanging out with him. He told us today that he doesn't want us to give up on him. He said he is going to beat it.
He was a strong and determined man. We are all better for his time with us.
Martin
Few can be called a legend in their field - Mr. St. Charles is one of the exceptions. My condolences to his family and friends.
He has touched the lives of a lot of people who he never personally knew. We should all be so impactful.
Rest in peace and thank you for everything.
Truly a sad day in archery. I remember feeling bad when they sold Northwest Archery and closed up shop a few years ago...but not nearly as bad I do today.
I will wander outside this evening, nock one up, and let it fly in memory of Glenn. Rest in peace as this arrow will.
That is so sad. A true pioneer. I even think Fred Bear followed his foot tracks. I wished I would've read this this morning, I would've shot some arrows in his memory while out scouting and setting a stand. :pray:
I met Mr. St. Charles one time, at Denton Hill. Although not much was said, I've never forgotten our exchange. Long story kept short, to me, it will always be a very pleasant memory.
Your back in the woods!
GOD Bless,
David
Sad day for archery. Great guy with a wealth of history & good. Thanks Glenn.
Another archery icon has passed. Prayers for the family in this difficult time. Glenn really made his mark in Archery history. Never to be forgotten. A great leader. What a wonderful life he lived!
I bet he's hunting with Fred right now, somewhere.....
Glen did more for bowhunting than we can probably imagine. He was there at the right place at the right time and he did what it took.
We who march behind him need to remember the work and the effort he made and to not let it be forgotten.
Next time you are sitting in your stand, take a moment to remember that in part, you have that ability because of Glen and a few others like him.
ChuckC
Rest in Peace, Glenn.
One of bowhuntings Mt Rushmoore faces. Very sorry to here that. God be with him and his family
Truely an ispiration for all of us he will be missed but not ever forgotten
Great man and one of my archery heros. Billets to Bows was one of the first books I ever read about bow building. I met him when I was about 25...not really knowing who he was, but picked up an autographed copy of "Billets" and "Bows on the Little Delta". Wow! He had a huge impact on myself and the rest of the archery world. His storys were awe inspiring and will not be forgoten. I am truly greatful to have met such a great man....Thank you Glen
Ihave had the priveldge to meet Glenn, he was an inspiration to many and did so much for the sport
Prayers for the St. Charles family on the way.
When I first got started in Traditional archery. I made a trip to his museum. Glenn was having a snooze, but his family were kind to me and walked me through the museum , and then I was able to view all of it myself. I know that traditional archery has changed my life...and the way I think about life. Thanks to Glenn we enjoy traditional archery hunting...Not onlt was he a strong advocate for achery hunting ....I believe he designed the modern day recurve that we most shoot in 1952..... a great man and a great family...god bless
Very sad news. The man is a legend.
I need to reread his book tonight. He did so much for archery.
Back when I first saw this thread, yesterday, I made a post of similar expression of caring as all our other members. however in reading the thread over today, I don't find it - so i am sure that (once again) after i finished typing I hit the "X" to close (from force of habit) rather than the "Add Reply" button - DUH!
Just wanted to now add my feelings of compassion for the family and many friends and admirers of the late, great personage and archery supporter, Glenn St. Charles. May he walk the golden fields and forests of pleasurable, unhurried stump-shooting with all his old friends of archery who went before him.
I've spoken to Glenn on the phone several times but I never met him in person. I am truly saddened by this news. What an inspiration he was to the archery world and to mankind. Prayers sent to his family from Louisiana.
Words are inadequate to express the sense of loss I feel, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. Mr. St. Charles was someone I both envied and admired without limits. Sincere best wishes and prayers for the family. Grant Young
Just keeping him at the top, Hes worth more than one post to me. Rest well old friend..Warberg
I'm posting this pic and message for my Dad, Grizz...
Prayers are sent to his family and friends.
A wise man once said a person is either a "giver" or a "taker" in life. Mr. St Charles was certainly a "giver." Will be sadly missed. Beav
Another of the great old time pioneers passes on, what a wonderful life lived.
Enjoy the hunting on the other side. Thanks from all of us for what you envisioned and turned into reality for all of us. None of us here today would be the people that we are without your insight and determination to see it to reality.
Happy Hunting.
Very sorry to hear about the loss of such a great archery legend and pioneer of our sport.
My sincerest condolences to the St. Charles family.
Glenn, we will miss you, but we'll share stories about you around our bowhunting campfires forever. A part of you will always be with us. Peace my friend, I look forward to seeing you again. We'll string our bows and hunt for trophies.... unless something else comes along. God be with you. todd
I always admire someone who puts their life passion to work. Glenns hard work has helped us all.
he will be missed, a true father of archery
It is certainly a sad day in the passing of one of the legends in this passion we call a sport. I've read many of his words with enjoyment and excitement. And they will continue to give others that same feeling. We were Blessed to have him for 98 years, he is the stuff that legends are made of. Somewhere you know he's shooting with Fred Bear, Howard Hill and Ben Pearson and so many others that went before him. God Bless his family.
Cheapshot-Tomi Varnell :archer:
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all that you did for Bowhunting. The many lives you touched and for the contributions you made not just to the archery world, but to all those who knew you and even to some that didn't. Ron and PaleFace expressed my sentiments better then I can.
He was an inspration to many and will be missed.
Had the pleasure of speaking with Glenn over the phone a couple of years ago when ordering a couple of signed books for myself and a friend. Truly enjoyable conversation.
Just read about Glenn's passing. My condolences go out to his family. I got to meet him briefly and get him to autograph my copy of "Bows on the Little Delta" back in 2000 at the St. Louis PBS banquet. Still is one of my favorite books ever.
He was a true legend and inspiration for all of us in the bowhunting world. He will surely be missed.
Huck
Sorry to hear this. I've been reading "Billets to Bow," and like the way he thought. The chapter called Instinctive Shooting is terrific.
