Don't tell me you found another stray elk in the Bighorns! :bigsmyl:
OK OK there is a little blood on the arrow.
I left Cheyenne Monday to come up to my home town Sheridan for my favorite vacation of the year. It was going to be a great couple of weeks, I just had a feeling.
Since I could not seem to draw any tags this year I was hunting on a General License. Now anyone who has done that in Wyoming know the challanges that you face. I knew that if I was going to find elk this year I would be working a little harder.
I spent time with friends Tueday and chased a few deer and stopped in and got to meet Whip. I tell you what if you all get a chance to meet joe dont pass it up he is awesome guy and it was great to finnally meet him.
On the 15th I decided that I would take the morning easy and head into the elk camp that I had hunted out of the last few years. Since they were in an area that boardered the area that I would be hunting I decided that would be my first plan of attack for the high country.
Wednesday afternoon I gathered my gear and headed over the divide to a place that I know holds elk and good elk. It was not long before the fun began. It was nearly three miles before I got into my hunting area but let me tell you it was worth every minute. As soon as got on the divide I could that beautiful sound of nature. The bulls were talking.
Now this is some vast and huge country and though I could hear them I could not find by glassing. I moved down a ridge line and kept looking. About an hour later I found the bull making all the noise. Almost two miles away in a straight line I was going to have to move fast. I moved quickly all the way to the bottom and all the way back to the top to find an awesome bull with 30 cows. He was not dumb though and had his cows really high up in a big saddle and was moving them to the other side. With the closet peice of cover nearly two hundred yards away I chose to let them be rather than blow them up. On my way back down I spot an impresive bull. I was loosing light fast and did not get to make a stock. He had long G3's and very impresive mass. The image of this beautiful bull is burned into my mind as I walk out that night in the dark.
I was not able to hunt the next day as I had to go to town and pick up my girlfriend so we could spend some time together hunting.
Come Friday though I could not stop thinking about that bull I had seen. It was a long walk but I just had to go back in there. Lindsay and I left the truck about two in the afternoon on Friday. Little did I know how great that evening would be.
Ok I gotta take a break and go get you all some pictures before I continue. This country it to beautiful to not show you some. I promise it wont be long.

I dont know what I would do without a few strays running around. :) How is your season going Sir?
tap-tap-tap
didnt he say it wouldnt take long,
Bet he won't be shooting that arrow again! :D
Ok that took a little longer than I thought that it would.
Where was I. Oh yea we were leaving the truck. Three miles later this is the view.

My girlfriend and I took a short break got a little food and enjoyed the beauty of the country.
After hanging out for a little bit it was time to move on. Shortly after we spotted a spike. With the wind kinda messing with my plans we kept going. With the spike there we knew there must be more.
Another mile and I spotted two cows. I knew we just found that bull I had seen a few days before. The he bugled and it was confirmed. The stock was going to have to be quick or the swirling wind would get me busted. I still could not see him so I started moving to where I had heard him. Lindsay stayed back a little hoping to watch it all unfold. Watching close and moving steady and quiet I finally saw him. It was him. My heart started racing. I was 40 yards and started to close the gap. Risking a chance at the wind I had to go with the cover. Tree to tree I made my way in to 22 yards. He was feeding with his head down facing me. I would not have to wait long. He soon turned broadside. I drew and anchored and loosed my arrow. The bull lunged a few steps and slowed quickly. Forty yards later he was down. I was so excited I could hardly talk.

No unfortunatly she could only see parts of him through the trees. She heard everything but did not get to see much. I wish she would have been able too.

Dad and I ran a tape over him last night. Since I am a gross score kind of person whats your guess?
Congrats. How did that Ox do at hauling him out?
I'm guessing 385-390 gross.
That's a whopper dog, Ryan.
Good for you, buddy.
Did a certain blue handled knife work on that one???
Congrats, great bull and story!

Super bull! Congrats!
Good question Ray the blue handled one did do a little work as well as an awesome blade from Maniac and a Don and Skyler original. I should have taken more pics of that part, but I was in a little bit of a hurry.
Outstanding job!!!! Oh, and the elk is nice too!!! You'd better marry her, helping ya pack that dude off the hill!!!
Outstanding! Truly a magnificent animal. It is great you got to share the moment with your girlfriend. Congratulations.
Great job to guess his score 340's? Congrats on a fine bull;;;
Do we get to choose a score range??? Great bull, and great story. Still a dream hunt for me....
370-380 is my guesstimate.
HOW DID I MISS THIS THREAD? Awesome bull my friend, and a general tag to boot! So impressive buddy :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
No since nets are for fish I'm with you on the gross score: how 'bout 346?
Holy Crap man. Looks like the "Randys" are bringing home the meat and bone this year. Awesome Bull Bro. Congrats. That is an amazing hunt. That ground looks perfect for sneaking and stalking. Is that the Bighorns? Never been more than real close to them.

 :scared:  :scared:  :scared:
Randy you the man! how many elk is that under your belt now?
Mr. Morin that was an awesome bull that you got. Your guess is right on too. 364 is what he comes out to green.
I am headed up the mountain again now gonna go see if I can find whip.
I was guessing gross....mine's a 360 net and that looks bigger than mine... whatever it "scores" its a world class elk....I'm proud for you bud!
Wow, just an incredible bull!!! If I was hunting elk this year I think I would go to the courthouse and have my first name changed to Randy before I left for the hunt! :bigsmyl:
Again?!! Great story and pics, Randy, but wasn't it supposed to be Lindsays turn to shoot first? Every time I see a picture of you with another nice bull, I think of how your Dad fanagled you out of school to be in the elk woods. I'm sure that you thank him every year. Look at what THAT education has done for you. Congratulations,elk-meister!
Yeah Ray I think he means 363 "Gross" score. Just that the measurement is "Green" as in the horns arent dried out yet...course you know that I'm sure. But I'm a terrible judge at these big Bulls. Course I am getting better here lately. :D
Good luck finding Whip Randy. I'm gonna Antelope hunt Wed. then help some friends Thurs. Friday with some Elk calling.
Man, what a bull!! Congrats, you certainly have the force with you. Glad the knife was in your armory of skinning and butchering tools. I hope it is the first bull of many you use it on.
Truly congrats Randy!!!!!!!!!! :campfire:
Congratulations Randy.....you're a machine! :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:

You done good...real good...Again!
Oh OK Randy, I guess I'll forgive you for ruining a perfectly good arrow on him! ;)
Great Bull, Congrats my friend... Thanks for sharing the story and pics with us!
Was that your new Pronghorn?
I'm not much of a "score" guy so I wouldn't have had a guess at how big he was other than "SHOOTER!!!"

Sorry for so many posts. I just got down off the mountian and I am trying to answer the questions everyong asked.
The OX is great. I packed three elk and a deer on it this year. On the second trip for my elk I packed 105 lbs over four miles and it was better that any pack I have had before.
PS I dont recommend doing that. :knothead:
Good job Randy thats a great bull.
what kind of pack is that? Three years ago I went to my hometown of Sheridan as well and helped my dad try to score on a general tag, not so lucky as you... Good Job!!!
Randy!!!!
Another Monster. :scared:

The pack is a Badlands OX. If you need a pack to carry a lot of weight that will do it. I had well over 100 lbs on it more than once this year.
Over the top dude!! GF along makes all the better. Thanks
Ok I had a few people ask me about my methods of packing out my elk. I think this is because the only picture I have of that process shows what looks like me carrying only the head out.
I understand the concern that some had with that. Allow me to explain. Anyone that has hunted elk knows that you cannot pack an entire elk anywhere in one trip.
When I harvest an elk I first quarter and bag all of the meat and hang it up to cool. When I leave the kill site that night I try to take all I can with me. In this case we took the back straps and the head. With the head being the most difficult to carry and the back straps the most difficult to hang that was the best choice.
This is a great advantage of the OX pack. The bag extends away from the frame and you can pack meat behind the bag.
The next morning I went in with my girlfriend and three others and we boned and packed out the rest of the meat.
I hope this clears the confusion up.
Great, great bull. Congrats and thanks for sharing.
that is a great bull Congrads!
Wow your sure doing something right you have had some good bulls in the past and now this! Hats off to ya!
Just caught up tp this thread. Great job, man!
I talked with Randy on yesterday before coming back to Italy,I though he was a little lucky,I was wrong this young dude KNOWS elk,he is a damn great hunter.Congrats once again Randy
Congrats on a magnificent animal Randy
Travis
It's not that Randy is lucky...it's the animals that are UNlucky!
I have been asked a few times lately about the elk in my avatar. Here is a short story version. The whole version was in Extreme Elk magazine a couple issues ago.
What a stud!! And that bull is huge :) Getting me all fired up for this fall
Just as good the second time around! My jaw drops every time I see that beast!
Yep 2nd time around as good as the 1st.
Thanks for sharing your adventure and congratulations on a awesome bull!
