Title: *** 2010 Missouri Tradtional Deer Hunt thread
Post by: Mudd on September 15, 2010, 12:52:00 AM
It's about 10 minutes until the 15th of Sept and just a few hours away from shooting time.

I knew I wouldn't have time to start this in the morning because I'll be trying to get out the door and in the woods.

I hope all of those that get to start tomorrow will check in and give us a report on the days happenings.

Thanks in advance!

God bless,Mudd

I'll be going up next week for a couple of days, hopefully. Since I'm nonresident, I'm saving the majority of my MO hunting time for the week before gun season opens, when the rut peaks.

I would move to MO if my wife would allow it.

I had to come in early this morning.

I have a P.T. appointment for my back.

It was a great morning! I got these pictures.

This year I've decided to try to keep a photo log of the season. We'll just have to see how that works out..lol I have a hard time remembering the essentials much less a camera..lol

The pictures start in the house just before I walk out the door.

Dressed to kill!

These two are at the end of my hunt.

I made it out this morning. Day off work. Sat a old ladder stand I have not used in 2 yrs. All grown up around it. Perfect. Sat for about 4hrs and saw 2mature does and 2 young ones. This is encouraging because about 4yrs ago we had a outbreak of blue tongue that hurt pretty bad. Herd is just starting to make a comeback. So it is all trad and be real selective. Old does or mature bucks only. White oak acorns are starting to drop in our area as well. Good hunting and be safe.   Jim Pyles

I went out Wednesday morning and evening and sat in my favorite spot.  I didn't see anything but a few squirrels and plenty of bugs.  It still beats a day at work hands down.  Had to come back home to work Friday but you can be sure I'll be back in my blind Saturday.

Good luck and good hunting guys-TRW

Went out this morning and sat my stand. Saw squirrels but no deer. On my way back in sotted a doe at the same time she spotted me. I saw which way she was sneaking off so tried to intercept her and her twin fawns. Long story short I made a mistake before they did. Deer 7 Jim 0

it was very foggy this morning in the river bottoms with visibility about 100 yards. had 4 deer about 75 yards away in a waist high weed field and could just make out their silhouettes. their heads were down feeding. one lifted it's head and was sporting a nice rack. they fed to about 60 yards away and i got a better view of the buck. he's a 130" and a real symetrical 4X4. they drifted away in the fog but it made my week. i haven't seen a good buck this early while hunting in a while.

Went out last night and this morning.

Last night had a small doe come in to 10 yards, turn broadside and reach around with her head to scratch her far side back leg – all I could see was ribs.  She was basically begging me to shoot, but I passed cause she was so small.  Then about an hour later had two more does out in the field in front of me at about 100 yards.  Also had 4 hens and a gobbler running around at the opposite side of the field where I had my ground blind this spring – why weren't they there then!

This morning started out with something small crunching leaves and moving toward my stand just as it was getting light enough to see.  Sounded like a possum, turned out to be a skunk.  He left without incident.  Turkeys running all around the opposite side of the field again.  No deer.  Hope to get out again this afternoon.

Snapped a picture from behind me with my phone hoping it would show my view, didn't show much but I thought it turned out kinda neet.

This was my first morning and a pretty good one.  Seen a flock of turkeys within 100 yds that held 13 birds.   (http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu36/L82HUNT/005-4.jpg)

Seen 4 does none of the yearlings came close enough, the big does know there safe. (http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu36/L82HUNT/006-2.jpg)

Had this 8pt at less then 5 yds from the tree.  But he needs a few more years. (http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu36/L82HUNT/007-1.jpg)

I finally made it out this morning and hunted from 6am till 9:30am and it was already starting to get hot. Only saw a gazzillion squirrels and 2 chipmunks, but the trail cam pics look promising. Several does and 2 hen turkeys about 5ft. away from the lens, which is only about 20 yards from my stand.
Too bad it's so dang hot! I'm not much of a hot weather hunter, so I'll have to wait until it cools off a bit before I hunt evenings. I'll probably do the same in the morning and hunt for a few hours till the sun gets up high then quit on it. New location tomorrow.....see what happens.

A doe with 2 spotted twins the first morning, Friday a coyote came about 40yds before he busted me, Saturday all I seen early was a curious armadillo that wanted to climb my ladder. Mid day a hen with 7 young turkeys came by, they were about the size of a banty rooster and 2 more does each with twins in spots. Getting ready to go and see if I can find a deer with out spots or nursing one. Would like to see horns but the freezer is empty sooo anything is game as long as it doesn't have milk on its face.

My every one be blessed today

Hey Living Waters, you need to exterminate those dillos. They will tear up quail and turkey nests and south Mo. is becoming infested with them. Here around Farmington we have an over abundance and they tore my garden up on a regular basis until I put up chicken wire and staked it to the ground.

Back to topic..............Here's a view from my stand over looking my clover food plot, and this is pretty much how it looked all day long.
No deer or turkey sightings yet, just a squirrel and a curious hummingbird to keep me company. The hummer really liked my bright orange fletchings.
In this pic the big wooden back board for my rifle target is 23 yards.

Also had an unexpected visit from the old guy across the road who was out exercising his beagles this evening. I need to remind him that it's bow season and our pasture is off limits until January.
The small walnut tree directly in front of me is 19 yards. It's a solid 30 to the center of the foodplot and the far side is 40 yards. Way too far for my Bear Grizzly recurve, so I'm hoping that I can get a shot at one closer to the walnut tree or my rifle target.
The tree that my stand is in was the only tree reasonably close to the food plot or otherwise I would have gotten closer. I may end up moving a couple of big round hay bales up closer to the clover for a natural blind and hunting off the ground, all depends on where the deer are feeding most of the time.

How wrong he is........The state of Missouri considers them an invasive species just like feral hogs and there is no season or limits on them, but MDC has a "Permissive Code" which means that it tells you what you "Can Do" and not what you "Can't Do" so you would just have to use your own judgement on that. It may ultimately come down to which agent you speak to?
If they aren't protected by any regulation then I see them as target practice, especially since they are tearing up my garden, pasture, food plots, and even though they mainly eat worms and grubs, they have been known to eat quail and turkey eggs. Besides carrying diseases such as Leprosy.
I suppose you could email the conservation dept. and ask them if you are unsure about doing something illegal, but I doubt that any agent would write you a ticket for killing armadillos unless he was in a really bad mood or having a rotten day.
Personally, I consider them a complete nuisance and they have no business in Missouri or my yard and since we can't coax them back to Arkansas, Texas, or Mexico then we do what country people have always done for centuries......we deal with it ourselves.

Semo; I wish-hope you are correct. Our local agent told us that we have a non- permissive code . If it is not listed  don't do it. I also calledthe regional office and they told me that unless they are tearing up our pasture or yard then do not kill. If you need to kill then you have to contact your local agent first.  I also compleatly agree with your last paragraph. Jim

Got another doe tonight.  Sometimes its better to be lucky then good.  A girl I work with has a small farm close, I hunted there once last year.  I decided to take my climber and really do just a little recon.  Wouldn't you know it, I was not in my tree an hour before four does came walking up the hill toward me.  They passed my recon tree at 10 yards.

Fortunately for me Dad was in Springfield so I called him and he helped me find it.  Now he expects me to buy him breakfast.

Once I got home I had a little helper during the skinning process.

I shot this little guy at about 6:30 today. It all worked out like it's supposed to for once. I hunted this stand for the first time today and he was the first deer to come by, he stopped at about 20 yards and looked away. I picked a spot and the arrow found it's mark! He kicked his rear leg's high in the air as the arrow blew through him! He trotted off in a semi circle through the brush and I caught sight of him again at about 50 yards. He stopped and started to go down in the rear and then the front and it was over! The whole thing only took maybe two minutes from the shot to a dead deer!
I was shooting my 47# Border Black Douglas Hex-5 and 515gr. Axis 400's tipped with Muzzy Phantom 220gr. 4 blades, they sure did a nice job!

I have my wife to thank for the frilly pic! She got a bit carried away, but I ain't gonna tell her that.

I have only been one other time since I shot the last doe, and about 15 minutes in I was wishing I was home on the couch.  Had a little dental emergency over the weekend last weekend.  Short story is I have two fewer teeth.  Don't get your hopes up it not the front teeth.  Lower back teeth.  Not I get to spend my 2011 hunting money on implants.

On Sunday I did have a spike at 15 yards broad side and let him walk, that a big improvement for me.  I had a skip at 30, I could have shot, but I thought it would come closer and I could not tell if it was button buck or not.  What I am leaving out is I was hunting a friend place who wants some does thinned, which means bucks are off limits.  If I would have been in my home spot my buck tag would have been filled on a spike and would not have been disappointed at all.

the shot i missed was about 15 yds. and i came up short with the zwicky no-mercy hitting rock and threw  sparks about ten feet high, i dont know who was more freeked me or the buck, thanks for readin and good luck yall.    p.s. il tack up a pic. if i can ever figure out how to.....

Way to go guys. I went out last evening after work. I bumped a deer about 50yds behind the shop. Got to my spot and sat the rest of the evening and saw squirrels. I am sitting on the ground most of the time this year. Just backed up against a tree with a little bit of stuff around to kind of break me up. I feel a lot more relaxed this way.

Well, I confess I was feeling kinda pouty as we'd been very busy and I'd not even been hunting 3 weeks into the season.  Thursday evening I cleared a hole and off we went.  Arrived to find my son's stand had been stolen, so that was a set back but I told him you never know what can happen.  We threw up another stand and pushed through it.  I was on stand late as a result but it turns out it didn't matter, 30 minutes later this doe presented a shot and I had my first deer of 2010!    :jumper:

It was dark and nasty thick with the leaves not down yet so I left retrieval to Friday morning.

Here's a pic of the doe with my "Track, recover and drag" team.  Love to get the kid's involved!    :D

Good shooting on a couple of big does!

Well I finally got deer within shooting range this morning. Unfortunately the thermals gave the lead doe a little of my scent and they did not cross the fence onto family property. So I had to watch them walk by me at 9 yds. Sure was nice to have deer close though.

My season has been a total zero so far. I've seen turkey twice, and busted them up once. Have had 2 deer blow at me, and the only actual deer I have seen with my eyes is right here behind the garage in my clover food plot....a big doe and 2 fawns. Other than that, the only close encounter I've had for a shot was the coyote at 18 steps and I missed right over it's back.....shot for 20+ and held high, nice to know the bow is shooting right where I point my bow arm though.

I'm so down in the dumps right now I just wanna quit. I've never had this much trouble patterning the deer and turkey. I blame it on the acorns cause there are so many everywhere! I can't seem to get zeroed in on anything, and the deer abandoned the food plot about 3 weeks ago for acorns.
My frustration isn't from lack of trying either, I've put about 10 miles on my boots so far and hit every hot spot in memory and still come up with zilch! I hate mid October....it's always been a rough time for me, but October 31st has always been magical. I've killed more deer with a bow on Oct. 31st than any other time of the season except for the first week of rifle season in November.
I might just take a break for a week or so until I get the urge to go at it again and maybe I'll have a fresh attitude by then.

Congrats to all you Boys from Missouri who have scored! I'm sorry for sounding like a cry baby, but it just has a tendancy to wear me down when I put forth my best effort and then some, but just can't seem to get anything working.
We have some new property in Montgomery County up north Missouri and we are going to hit that in a couple of weeks, maybe I'll have my own stories to tell and pics to post when we get to set foot on that new ground? Something has got to change sooner or later and it's been my experience that my first time on new ground does wonders for my attitude and success rate.

Great Job! How do you like those Suffers, did it do a good job on entry/exit hole? You didn't say if it was a pass through or not, but just asking your honest opinion cause I'm using the Snuffer 125gr. screw ins and glue ons this year and haven't got a chance to put one through an animal yet.

With that kind of help in the recovery, you should hire them out and make a little extra cash!  :D

Chris,

I feel your pain, up until yesterday I wasn't seeing deer. Was feeling pretty discouraged about it but figured I can't kill them on the couch and the boom boom hunters will be out pretty soon. So I better just keep getting out there after them. Good luck to you things will turn when you least expect it.

Thanks Ryan, and I've noticed you've been hard at it yourself already this year.    :D

SEMO HUNTER, I've hunted with Snuffers quite a bit but never managed to shoot anything with one before.  I was surprised at the penetration, it "poofed" right through her and stuck in the ground.  Nice walnut sized holes and a very easy recovery.

I was impressed enough that I mounted up a couple more Snuffers this afternoon.    :D

That's Awesome, that's exactly what I wanted to hear. Now I just need to get some field testing of my own done with the Suffers.
That's what I'm loaded up with, and that's what I have the most of, so it's reassuring that they will get the job done if I can do my part.  ;)

Thanks for the feedback and field testing!

That's true, they ain't gonna run through your living room, unless you live in a tent.

I went this evening for about an hour right at dark.....still a big zero. It's starting to cloud up and looks like rain, maybe they are all in deep cover?
I'll be glad to get up north Mo. at least I know I'll see some deer up there. Lots more there than down here, even if I don't get a shot it would be nice just to watch them.

Ain't that the truth, although where we hunt up between Macon and Kirksville they are getting em thinned down pretty good. Sure not like it was a few years ago but still plenty of deer.

Yep, you can only have open quota doe tags for so long before the herd gets out of whack, then the population suffers. Sometimes I wonder what they are thinking? There needs to be a better system of keeping track of how many breeders are taken out to use as a better management tool, and that telechek system ain't the answer.
It's been my experience that some areas are over populated and others are almost devoid of deer.
I think it's time to back off the unlimited doe tags for awhile. Just my 2 cents.

Unlimited archery doe tags are not hurting Missouri Deer.  We have one of the best Conservation departments in the nation, and they do put the quota's by area.  Anecdotal evidence on a few area's does'nt come close to the infromation that is gathered for the whole state.  I remember when people complained if you shot a doe in this state, now there are way to many in a lot of area's.  I am happy to leave this in the hands of our conservation department.

Rainman- I had a lengthy reply in mind for your comment, but instead of disrupting someone else's post with a long rant I've decided to start a new topic on the subject entitled "MDC" if you care to join. All I will say at this point is if you think I'm just complaining about our home state's Conservation Department, think again. I'm proud to have been born and raised in Missouri and we do have one of the best Conservation Departments there is, but no organization or system is without flaws.....to think so would just be naive.
Some may take a "Passive" approach and just let other people handle it, whether it's right or wrong, but I chose to take a "Proactive" approach and voice my concerns....which I won't do in this thread.

I just got off the phone with my brother, he took 3 days off from work this week and he filled me in on the status of our new hunting property.
He said his father in law (it's his property we are hunting) had cut all the beans and the deer were starting to work on the spillage left over. He has seen quite a few does, and a nice 1 1/2 year old non typical fork horn with 2 main beams on his left side. I was like WOW, he's got some potential. Hopefully he won't get poached by some idiot and he will make it a couple more years. We're heading up there next Wednesday and will be there through the weekend, 5 days of hunting!!
It's like waiting on Christmas to get here, I can't stand it! I just love the anticipation of hunting brand new ground.

Boy I sure hope so! Thanks.
The lack of deer sightings around here has really got me down something terrible. I don't mind working hard for my share of game, but when you can only catch rare glimpses of deer and turkey, it's just a matter of time before you start to think you would be better off doing something else? This is the worst I've ever seen it down here in this part of the country, makes me wonder if something hasn't happened?
Doesn't matter, I've got work to do and I'll just concentrate on that for now until I can get up north. I hope I've got some pics of my own to post here instead of just drooling over everybody elses.

Have not been seeing much around our area either. We are in the recovering stage of blue tongue. It has been almost 5yrs now and I am just starting to see a few more deer. Last year I saw about 2 doz. total for the year. I was told it could take up to 10yrs for a complete recovery. Jim Pyles

Missouri has had some documented cases of CWD, so I just hope it hasn't spread to my deer herd. Kinda makes me wonder though?
On the bright side, I haven't found any remains of deer that died of unknown causes.....so that's a good thing. My area just gets hit real hard during rifle season and I think the onslaught that occurs every year in November just keeps them thinned down real bad. If some of these poachers around here would get put out of business, I might start seeing more deer. Not much I can do about it though, the local warden knows about them and chooses to do nothing about it. So whata ya gonna do?

Your right Fireman_3311, I went back and re-read my Missouri Deer Hunter magazine and it was captive deer and Not free ranging deer that had CWD. My Bad!    :knothead:
Thank God none of those made it out of the pen!

I'm headed up to Montgomery City this morning going to be there for 5 days/4 nights and I have it figured out to a total of 8 possible morning/evening hunts if the weather is cooperative with me. If I can get access to a computer up there and I can post some pics I'll let y'all know how I do?

I was fletching up some more cedar shafts last night and dreaming about huge bucks while I was fletching. I'd stare at each one as I meticulously fletched them with as much precision as I possibly could and wondered which one of you will take the magic flight through my first trad kill?   :saywhat:    :jumper:

I'm headed to a friends place east of Fulton so we won't be too far apart.

I think I might hang out there until after gun season or until he runs me off..lol

I've been running into a problem hunting near home. The deer are coming in groups, (2 - 8) in a group. That makes it more difficult to put together everything for a shot when I always have a set of eyes looking my direction.

The fewest I've seen on any given day is 6. There were a total of 26 yesterday(morning and evening) Two of which were shooter bucks.

Good luck!!& Good Hunting!!

I have hunted Missouri many years now but will pass this year because Arkansas has added Missouri to the CWD list which means that a hunter cannot bring a deer home unless it is fully deboned or processed; I hunted carrol county with great success but will have to pass now....   :(

Hope all of you in Missouri have a great season....   :campfire:

I killed a button buck last Sat. morning. He came running down the trail past me and stopped about 19-20 yards away quartering away. The way his head was with the ears I couldn't see the buttons. But he is sure going to eat good.

There's deer! It has been hot and dry and the woods are full of food. They just haven't been moving during the day. Cooled down a little this weekend and we are seeing some good bucks. Since Saturday morning have had 5 bucks in shooting range just haven't got a good shot. Forced one yesterday and paid for it.

Just got back home today from up North Missouri, and hot and dry is right! The woods are so dry it's like walking on tin foil trying to get around. Stalking or sneaking is completely out of the question. I did see a handful of deer though, most were running......away from me!

So with sneaking or stalking out of the question I decided to put a stand up in a funnel where 4 brushy ditches and draws all come together to form a pinch point. My first morning sit in the stand I had 2 small bucks come within 15 steps of my tree and I let them both walk. One was just a fork horn which isn't legal in Montgomery Co. (4pt. rule) and the other was an 8pt. wanna be that had 4 good points on one side and only a long dagger spike with a brow tine on the other side. He was a young deer maybe 1 1/2 year old with potential and since it was so warm anyway I just decided to pass.
It was reall nice to finally see some deer though and the buck sign up there is unreal. Scrapes and rubs everywhere! I found some scrapes the size of a Volkswagon hood and some rubs the size of fence posts! So I know there's at least one bruiser buck in there somewhere.

Pics to be posted later when I get them downloaded into my computer.

Has anyone seen any rut action yet?  I am hoping to get at least one hunt in this week.

I sold my compound last month, picked up a Hornes Ridgerunner off of the classifieds and am getting close to being hunt-ready (at least out to 10 yards!).  I'm looking forward to taking a curve into the woods instead the wheelie bow!

Here's my update on our new property up north Missouri, and to answer Kevin's question while I'm at it.....no I haven't, but the rubs and scrapes are Everywhere!

I found the best funnel/pinch point on the entire property and laid claim to it with my Big Dog Man and a Half 18' ladder stand. The property is fairly flat with few hills, mostly brushy ditches and draws. It was mainly pasture ground for cattle for years, but this year the property owner decided to move the cows and plant soybeans......Yummmy!

There's also a dry creek bed that holds pockets of water running right along the edge of my funnel. Squirrels, doves, skunks, and other critters have been drinking from it daily and I think it's one of the few water sources in the area. That's a bonus!

All the beans have been harvested and the only cover left is the ditches, draws, and fence rows. Where my stand is place is right at the intersection where about 4 of these come together and connect to the main chunk of timber that runs the entire length of the property from one end to the other. It's a major artery for all deer movement on the property which is 1/4 mile wide by 1 mile long. Rubs and scrapes are plentiful throughout this major timber highway and on my first morning sit a couple of young bucks came cruising by...a fork horn and a wannabee 8pt. which had 4 on one side and a dagger like spike with a brow tine on the other. I also got them on video. You can see it here >>---->  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYaeUWZbZ2M

I saw quite a few does also and deer movement was restricted to early morning and late evening due to the warm temps and full moon, but I saw plenty to give me the confidence boost that I was needing.

I also found some of the largest rubs I have ever seen in my whole life that ranged from the size of your thumb up to the size of a cedar fence post. Then as low as knee high off the ground up to even with my man boobs.

Here's a large rub that's one of the many that adorn my funnel and is less than 50 yards from my stand. I stood my Bear Grizzly next to it for size comparison.....I'd like to get a crack at the Hoss that whittled on this cedar tree!   :jumper:

This shows part of an access road that crosses the dry creek bed for tractor and combine access to the fields. Deer tracks galore in this road and I've got my trail camera set up on the edge of it facing in one direction up through the ditch my treestand sits in. Hopefully I'll catch one of the bruisers on camera that are roaming this area.

Thursday mornig had a nice 8 pt 120" buck come up a draw that I could hear before I seen him he grunted a half dozen times in about a 50 yard stretch.  He was pretty swollen but I never seen a doe in the area that morning.   Sunday morning watched a basket 6 chase 3 differant does in a field.  The does were not really happy about it and I think he was just more or less trying to figure out what to do.   (http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu36/L82HUNT/031-2.jpg)

Glenn, are you in the Northern portion or the Southern Portion of the state?

The 2 bucks that I saw were just traveling, but since I only saw those 2....I can't really say for sure that the rut hasn't started or not. It's just around the corner and could be anytime now. When it clicks it will be like somebody flipped on the light switch and all heck will break loose all at once. We just went through the rutting moon (2nd full moon after the equinox) so 2 weeks after that is supposed to be close to peak depending on where your at. I hope it starts cranking up by this weekend, Halloween weekend is my favorite time to bowhunt.

Gasconade Co. is right below where I'm hunting. Just outside Montgomery City, but I live in Park Hills. My brother still lives in Montgomery City and this is his father in law's place we are leasing this year. This particular area has a reputation for producing some really big bucks in the past......I just hope that legacy holds out.

Good Luck this weekend!

Have gone out last three mornings and had quite a few sightings and close encounters. Still windy but in a good direction for this stand. Several non-legal bucks running around. Saw one that went out a couple of inches past his ears and was about one and a half times as tall as his ears but was only a six point (three to a side ). He was definatly mature. Big sway belly and back, grey face. Only ten to fifteen feet away, but we have the four point rule. Saw one leagal buck but he kept stopping in the wrong places. Maybe today is the day. Seeing very few does. I think I am pushing them out as I go in befor light. Leaving to try again and watch another of Gods beautiful sunrises.  Jim Pyles

Sighting #13 was almost lucky thirteen for me. I heard a deer jump the fence and saw a flash of movement, when he came out from behind a cedar tree all I could see were HORNS and my first thought was man that is a little bodied deer. Then I was focused on picking a spot, about that time he saw me and trotted off to the north. I guess that was my trick now I am ready for my treat.  :)

Just got back from up North Mo. and finally had an eventful weekend. Saw a definite shooter Friday evening about 30 min. before dark. The big dude slipped around me about 150 yards out across a cut bean field. Something spooked him, but it wasn't me and I got a pretty good look at him, but don't have a point count. He was wide and heavy, at least a big 8 probably a 10 or better, but I can't be sure.

Saw 5 does and 2 bucks Saturday eve. all from about 100 yards away as I hunted in an observation blind watching a funnel. Small fork horn and a med. sized 8pt.
Sunday morning shot at another coyote, the bugger slipped in on me at about 30 yards before I knew he was there and he busted me. I came to full draw and whistled him to stop at 25ish and cut hair off his back.......Dang it!

Lastly Sunday evening saw a buck bumping 3 does along with the poke and lick method.....his nose must have been cold cause the does didn't much care for it.  :p

Couldn't tell how big he was, forgot my binos in the truck and they were all the way in the creek bottom below my stand.....lots of yards of brush between us.

This morning was a bust......nada....came home about 2:30pm......gonna try it here around the house for a few days and let the property up north cool down a bit and try to hit it again this coming weekend. The rut is starting to trickle in so this weekend should be even more action.....can't wait!  :jumper:

Hunted on the ground yesterday evening after work. Stepped into the timber south of the house and donned the ghillie. The high winds helped cover the noise as I snuck in. 30min before dark I saw a buck below the pond dam making a scrape! Hit the grunt tube and here he came... All bulled up with his hackle raised, ears pinned back!! He made another scrape 15 yds from me, but was on the wrong side of the tree. He did take a step closer, but stayed quartered to. Nice 9 point, 4x5!!!  Going back in there again today after work!! Rattlin horns in hand!!!

That's awesome, go get after him while he's aggresive and hot! It's been my experience that when you call a buck in at a certain area, he is probably guarding it and very intolerable to outsiders....which makes them easier to call in multiple times. I sure hope you get him.
Good Luck!

Rattled up a monster 10 pointer sunday night, couldn't get a shot at him. Didn't spook him so maybe I could get another chance at him later on. Seen him 2 times while walking out after dark in a near by field. Left the stand and my buddy hunted it Monday after work he said he came with in 70 yrds of him chasing some does. Went out yesterday and there was 6 trucks parked right where he was crossing the road. Guy in my stand needing educated on the legality of ownership. For 3 weeks me and my buddy have been the only people hunting with in a mile of this place, someone must have caught him in the road or field. The joys of public land hunting. Cant wait to leave next week for western MO, will have 5 days bow hunting with only a few locals that always come by to talk and get some of our famous gourmet camp food

This Friday had a lot of activity in my neck of the woods.  I counted 18 deer and two came within 15 feet of me as they stopped to take a breather.  They were being chased by a buck.  This fellow here was taken and I had a very good morning.  I harvested him with my HH bow and a HH broadhead that was given to me by Tim of Breaveheart Archery to try out.  Thanks again Tim. I am truly lucky.  On a lark Dad and I put in for the Blue and Gray County Park hunt.  Now we really did not expect to get drawn.  But since Dad is in Kansas right now and going to Illinois next week we figured we would put in for the hunt we would least get drawn for.

As luck would have it we got drawn.  The hunt started on Oct 30th, with youth season and Halloween we did not go up until Monday.  We got there early enough to hang a couple of stands and hunt Monday evening.  It took till Wednesday before we dialed it in to have deer come by within shooting range.  This is one of the hunts that lets you shoot a bonus buck as long as you shoot a doe first.  Deer hit the ground on Wed, Thur, and Friday.  After Friday evening we pulled stakes and headed home.  All in all it was a pretty good 4.5 days of hunting.

Great Job Nevin, and nice buck! Don't you just love it when the woods just seems to come alive with deer activity all at once? I haven't had an experience like that in a long, long time. I'm truly envious!   :D

Looks like you and your dad had a great hunt Scott, congrats to both of you! Once again......I'm envious!   :D

I was seeing quite a few deer up north Mo. until this weekend and it was pretty stagnant. Few does, and no bucks at all were seen. I think the deer are in some kind of transition they go through right before the rut because I've seen this happen before. It's almost like somebody just shut the water off and the hunting goes stale for a bit, then when it comes back it's like somebody just threw the light switch on and the woods comes to life with rutting again.
I just hope they get straightened out before this weekend.

Kinda intested in what you guys saw for a rut this year?  Lots of little bucks chasing does but never saw a big buck with a doe or a big buck cruising.  I was hunting an area with some really nice bucks as well. Probably just bad luck but I'm certainly not the only one I know who saw the same thing this year.  Interested in what the rest of you guys encountered.

I didn't see but only one small buck bumping a doe along with his nose and that was during bow season in late October. I did not see a single buck chasing a doe at all during the rifle portion.
I did get a heavy 8pt. with a rifle, but I had to walk him up while still hunting mid day on the Sunday of the season opener.
He was all rutted up and stunk to high heaven, but he hadn't been breeding as evidence of no hair missing on his brisket area. He appeared to have rubbed his horns slick on the inside from torchering the poor cedar trees in the area, evidently out of sexual frustration?   :dunno:

Something definitely seems amiss this year with the rut, I can't quite put my finger on it.

Anybody see sign that the rut ain't over or maybe second rut. I don't hunt during gun season so my last hunt was the weekend before gun. Bucks were chasing on my last hunt and yesterday along with finding newly pawed ground, I watched a 8 point chasing a doe.

Hey Chris, I'm thinking the rut will be longer and spread out this year.  I hunt around your area and activity was sparse prior to gun season.  I'm out in the woods tonight, first time since gun ended and see a lot of new rubs and scrapes still fresh.  No deer, kind of windy.

I'm pretty sure you are right about that Neven. The rut did seem sporadic and not very intense in my area at all. Lots of rubs, scrapes, and buck activity......but I think mostly nocturnal?
I had heard from someone else that the rut forecast was supposed to call for exactly what we got.......a sporadic rut, less intense, and drawn out longer. I believe that's truly what has happened. Which isn't such a bad thing for us late season bowhunters, it means we have a better chance of catching a buck crusing for does further into the winter season. It could be a bonus?

I agree Semo, and last night was an example of that.  Even with the winds, at about 4pm a small four pointer was following some does around.  He got close to me and was picking me up, but wasn't too shook up because he kept on after the does.

this arrow that hap had sent me had killed three deer,so it had some good history behind it.
i shot the arrow a few times after i got it, it seemed fat compaired to my carbons but it shot very good, anyway,i put it on one of my mounts rack and its been there since,i look at ever now and then and think, you know thats pretty cool that some guy killed three deer with that one arrow and now i have it to look at all the time, when really its his memorys that are in that arrow,he's the one that got to see it slice through the brown hair of his deer,so thats when i decided to ask the question of other tradgangers(did you kill anything with your arrowtrade arrow?)...... went out about mid morning just looking for a rabbit or something maybe a coyote, sinse theres been so much talk about yotes, and theres plenty in these woods, there very vocal rite now...got to where my stand is and seen several trails converging just under my stand, with turkey tracks everywhere and i mean everywhere.
so i backed out and went looking for rabbits around the old house, i jumped 1 with no shot , wanted to go get somthing to eat and drink but i knew if i left i might not get back to hunt the evening.
so i just stayed, and goofed around in the old barn, but i couldnt stand it any longer i know theres turkeys around so i figured i would go sit in the stand the rest of the day.
at 1:30 i climbed up and started to wait for what ever would show up....

i was just starting to get cold(fingers and toes) and starting to think about bailing out.
it was about sunset i caught movment off to my left about a hundred yds away.
got my hands out of my pockets and picked up my bow and knocked the arrow.
nice big fat doe,( oh boy here we go.)
thats what i always say to my self, she was on a trail that would tak her about 50-60 yds away , and for what ever reason she turned and came down on the trail leading under my stand,
thirty....twenty....fifteen...shes nervous, i know she can smell me,i been there for what three hrs. she stomps her foot trying to get somthing to move, sticking her nose in the air checking and rechecking, she's not sure but she takes another step, then she turned her head aweay and i raise my bow and draw all in one motion slow and smooth,
she seen me and hops afew yards away and ive good a goodshot and it just feels rite..
that arrow was so pretty in flight it was like a slowmotion movie.PERFECT!   sheran about 40 yds and tipped over.......buetiful doe! (http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae69/arrow30_photos/recurvedoe3.jpg)

HEY-How about that! Good shooting Arrow 30! That's why we make them. Too bad it broke, it was sure on a roll.

The arrow I received was a real beauty-but about 3" too short.

Hap

Turkeys anyone.  Got these last Saturday evening.  Had a blind set up on the edge of a hay field where I have seen deer and turkeys feeding.  There was a group of 20 or so turkeys come by.  Only one was really close enough to shoot, so I took the shot.  I hit it a little higher than I would have liked and severed its neck right at the base.  Lucky for me the bird never even flopped.  All the rest of the birds just stood there looking around, like turkeys do.  Finally after about 5 minutes a mature hen came over to investigate, now we have two turkeys for Christmas dinner.
