Site For Multiflora Rose
Just finished a Primitive "stone" tipped hunting arrow made from "multiflora rose"
Its my first.... Cutting shoots is a pain... You should seen my arms after that...grrr.!!! But they make a great arrow... I really like it. The wood is dense ... kind of like bamboo. Its light , but very strong. Easy to straighten too.
Never thought I'd ever find anything "GOOD" about this pesty bush .. But now I did...and I'm glad.. I bet you can get anyone to let you cut all you want.
Try it !!! I think this will be the first arrow I let fly at a DEER this Season ...Jeff

See the dark spot near head ..thats were a thorn was.
Wow! Come on over to SE PA...our Game Comm. put it in on game lands a long, long time ago and it's taking over everywhere!
Like you, can't believe there is anything "useful" about that miserable intrusive plant! I had to open and see. Nicely done.
Doc Nock ..its everywhere too in Ohio here.... I'm telling you it makes great shafts.... Look for the ones that are long shoots that don't have many thorns.. there the straightest and dense.
That is unbelievable, nice job. You can always tell which driver in our gang tried to walk thru that stuff, his clothes are shredded and he'll be bleeding!! If you should miss with one of those and lose it, try going back in the spring, it will probably be sprouting!lol
Heres a full lenth shot of arrow

great looking arrow Jeff.i hope you get one with it.i am going to try my hardest to learn how to make some primitive arrows for my new bow.good luck this season.your friend, steve
Good job! Do you glue your feathers too or just wrap the ends? I've tried the wildrose and it is good to work with. I wonder why it isn't more widely used by the primitive guy's here?
MFR is the nastiest stuff on the planet! Amazing that the deer love the stuff (and eat it as well).
It's good to hear that someone found a good use for it (other than for making an "nuclear grade" barrier).
Looks deadly!
Just got back from cutting more Multiflora Rose ... Got to tend to wounds ...lol !!!
two by themself are .."PRIME" shafts. I scrape the thorns off in the woods

OSAGE TREE ... I glue and wrap...feathers !
Seabass I'll send you some shafts
I can say that those are "sweet" looking but that's because they aren't pointed my direction...lol
I'm sure they will be deadly when the time is right.
Thanks for sharing with us.
God bless,Mudd
the place I hunt in Coshocton County has a life time supply. Man that is nasty stuff to drag a deer out of
....more of you guys should try theses for arrow shafts...There free.. I don't think anyone will not want you to cut them ...WARNING It hurts getting them !!! lol
Ferret, Mickey Lotz made plenty of arrows from it!! I sent him a bunch from NY years ago. It was planted as a natural fence in NY in the 1920s in my area. The birds are the culprit for spreading it everywhere with their droppings. Talk to my bunny hunters about it around here, brutal stuff!! Nice arrow by the way! Shawn
Thanks Guys
That is cool.......What is the drying time before you can make arrows out of it?
Nice work Jeff!
Horner ... I think a month...I got so many I really never checked. I just took bark off a few fresh cut today ..to see how long it will take that way !
It's liable to check on ya...I think Pat said maybe leave an 1"-1.5" of bark of both ends to help prevent checking?
Nice looking arrows. Been looking at some rose, but can't bring myself to do it while there is still sourwood. lol

Thanks, I will look forward to your findings on how long it takes.
I might just have to go hacking some myself. This is one of the best ideas ever.
Horner ..go cut some but wear long sleeves ..lol ! Good luck with arrows ...Jeff
Jeff, thanks for sending me some shafts.i think thats the same rose that grows behind my house.i tried to get rid of the stuff, but i couldn't.now i have a reason to let it grow.i am on the hunt for some stone heads.i posted a thread for some knappers to get a hold of me.i am also ordering some turkey feathers from stingsteatcher.i am almost ready to make some real primitive arrows.now look what you've done to me.lol i can't thank you enough, steve
Great looking arrows!I've got some shafts from choke cherry...been wanting to try Rose. That stuff is insane in those Ohio woods! You guys have 15,000 times more of it out there!
vtmtnman... Its everywere.... Deer love to hide in it too... It will kill ya if You don't watch...lol.....!!! Finally found something good about it.
Seabass ...Should of been at "Flint Ridge" knap-in on Labor Day Weekend... Lots of great points there. I got 12 off a Guy for $2.50 each...That was a steal. Let me see if I can get ahold of him....Jeff

wow!!!! jeff those are some real cool looking arrows they would go good with my osage bow that joe made me. way to cool.well done sir :clapper:
On one hand we are lucky not to have that growing up here in Michigan(at least I have never seen it in the wild) and on the other hand no arrows!
Way cool arrow! I tried cutting some rose during turkey season this year, but the only stems I could find that were of suitable diameter were way deep inside the thickets. Eventually I had a "screw this" moment.
Around here, you don't have to look for it. You just walk through your local thicket and you'll find more of it than you ever wanted to find. Those hook shaped thorns hurt just to think about it.
I've just gotta try those!
They take about 6 wks to dry. Get a dozn or so bundled together after you peel and straighten them (over heat). Bundle them tight as you can with string or twine, stack in a corner and forget for 6 wks. Then got to work. You'll probably need to re-straighten some and sand off the "bumps". They do check a little but I've not tried leaving some bark on the ends. I've always had enough length to cut that part off.
I carry bypass pruners when I'm hunting and usually need them to get thru the nasty stuff when hunting around here.
Mr. Creason is right, the good stuff is usually in the middle of a big nasty bush. You have to gingerly snip your way in to get it. You WILL bleed! Try to get only the best with no "kinks' or little branches shooting off. It is surprisingly hard to find really good shafts considering the volume of it that grows.
They are worth the trouble though. The shafts are almost as strong as fiberglass, easy to self knock and cut slots for the stone. They are heavy for their diameter compared to cedar.
I tried soaking some in Fornbys but they really didn't absorb much weight although it does make a nice "primitive" style finish. (No shine). I'd say an overnight soak would be sufficient. You can also use any other style finish you want and they will take leather dye pretty well if you want to tone down the "white".
I hope this helps. Sorry to highjack the thread. I've been experimenting with it for a few years. I was tickled when I found a use for the danged stuff, but it ain't easy to "harvest".
Also, Make sure to only cut living plants. the dead stuff is too brittle.
They used to say about big bore center fire rifles: Maim on one end and kill from the other.
I would think harvesting and making arrows from that danged, cursed MFR would fit that same catagory of maiming to harvest/build and then kill when used.
Yikes! That's dedication! I'm impressed
Doc Nock ...too funny !
I sure hope my sourwood works out.......that stuff is too mean to look to as an alternative! haha
It does tend to frighten women and children when you explain where they came from.
:)
If your gonna be dumb you gotta be tough!
That rose grow wild around there? Looks like good shaft material. I haven't saw any here in louisiana. Woder if it's here? I find plenty of different canes.
Gene,
If'n it ain't growing in the wild wonderful state of LA, kiss the ground.
You can more easily buy other shafting material than ever want a "free" supply...
That stuff is like offering amnesty to illegal aliens --it takes over in a heartbeat! Wretched, cursed vile stuff!
There is a blood debt on each and every shaft you harvest!! On the property for the youth hunt my son and I collected close to 100 candidates for arrow shafting. Never used it before this but it looks like a fun project (strange what I find fun eh?) and my son was absolutely tickled to be rooting through these thickets of hells weed with me oddly enough (weird kid, wonder where he gets it from). I didnt mind getting in there and cutting the stuff so much as breaking off all of those thorns, awful things! Oh well if you aint earning your hunt one way or another its probably not as fun.
