I've been out and back a few times already.  Have been running into elk regularly but no shots.  I plan on taking the last week of season off and hopefully they will be talking a little more by then.  I have only come across one screamin bull so far and a few other light bugles.  Always fun.

Went out for over a week with another trad ganger from Cali.  Had a blast, we saw tons of elk, got close a few times.  No clean shots. Busted by the wind mainly is what kept a kill from happening.  Bjorn is still chasing them critters while I am working.  Late season can't come soon enough!  The local Deer are in serious danger right now!

Hunted the Four Corners area for a week.Had a fine camp, smooth whiskey, and good food in some beautiful country.Saw elk, bears, turkeys, and mule deer but never got close enough to nock an arrow on an elk.Almost froze our Texas rear ends off and had a wonderful time doing it.After recuperating from the 24hr drive home,we're already planning the next trip.

Hunted opening weekend with a fellow trad archer from the area.   We packed in 8 miles with his llamas and set up camp on a very active ridge point.  After putting up the Teepee, setting up camp, staking out llamas, etc we settled into our camp chairs for some much needed rest.  It was the evening before the Montana opener.  Slowly we hear bugles intensifying to our south .  We looked at each other and smiled.  We decided to warm up the diaphrams and bugle tubes a bit.  Well you guessed it, we called a 330ish bull into camp with two nice satellites and 40 cows.  I mean RIGHT into camp as in they would have run us down had the llamas not held them up.  They lingered for a solid 10 minutes before circling enough to get wind.   Needless to say we didn't take any bulls in the next 3 days.  Murphy's law.  I captured a taste of it on video, but I'll need help posting it.  I haven't even posted an avatar.. I'm thinking video will be a stretch.  But if its easy let me know?

Here a the youtube link.... Let me know if this works.    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPMwK15oXTO

The audio is very quiet so turn up the volume up to max.  The first part of the shot is me with a small point and shoot focused through one lense of my binoculars.  The herd was 100 yards or so when the video was shot, but worked upto about 50 yards.  I didn't film any of the closer stuff and I regret it.  I was too focused on holding still and drooling over the herd bull with my binos.   :)

Been out three times so far. Spent all last weekend moving so that put a dent in it.

I've seen lots of cows and one spike bull so far. No bugling, but I anticipate some vocals this weekend. Daytime temps are still hot in this part of the state, rough hiking. Still hope to score!

just got back.

*had elk within 5 yds....winded us and no shot
*had elk within range and closing...winded us and no shot
*while still hunting, found a bedded 6pt bull at 40yds unaware of our presence....wind swirled and...yup winded us and no shot!
SOOOOOOOO
totals: a lot of cows were saved by the wind and
6 legal bulls were saved by the wind last week in CO

A little screaming, not much. These are public land elk and were not into calling so I just kept it quiet. They are educated and just weren't interested or responding. I could tell they were getting a little fired up to start putting on a show.

Learned a ton again and had a great time

Lost 8 LBS...173# down to 165#...LOTS of HIKING and HIGH up. The norm.

Went up over Labor Day weekend and saw a BIG bull.  I spent the next 2 days deciding if it was prudent to try getting into his hole (Hell's Canyon...) and decided against it.

Get to head back up this weekend and sounds like they might be up to talking now  :)

Back from a 9 day backpack DIY with 2 patners. My 2nd DIY. Saw a few cows, heard a few bugles, had a bull answering one evening but could not pin him down. Good trip from a learning standpoint, tested some gear and food options. found tons of fresh sign just could not put it togehter. Now I have even more questions:)Those mountains are something!

It took me 3 years...meaning 3 weeks...of hunting a 3 mile section of mountain to learn it. It is tough DIY without much time to really do enough to prepare and kill one. I have done great on chances and encounters, but no kills. I have a good plan for next year. Great time hunting and learning! I think the wind saves the elk race every year. It was tough for us this year with a variable wind. I didn't even sit most evenings because no elk in it's right mind would ever come close enough to me in that fickle wind.
