Title: NC hunters?
Post by: J-dog on September 12, 2010, 05:14:00 PM
Anyone done anything yet? Have not seen doodly - some dude was running his hounds in preparation for the gun season   :knothead:   - back and forth across where i was sitting, the thicket I know the deer should come from they just kept doin laps. Heard the deer a couple times within 10 yrads of me but he/she weren't leaving the cover. Got to listen to a good race anyhow, sorry but I remember the days when I was younger and would have been in the middle of a dog hunt!

Hope yalls seasons are good!

I live in Texas now, but I'm heading home to visit friends and family, and hunt in Pender County at the end of bow season, 1st weekend in October.  Running deer with hounds on small tracks of land is incredibly annoying. I can't believe it's still legal.  I guess we can bowhunt on Sunday now, and enjoy the quiet though.
Good luck.

Tell me when curve! glad yall got that doe recovered. On a club now though have not set foot on it but once so far - got to get in there and get set up. Luckily it is land I hunted freely as a youth and know where I want to be and know no one else is in there! Hopefully that turns out.
Good luck to yall -- anyone else?

No luck yesterday morning.  It was actually chilly and sprinkled rain for a bit (which is a 180 degree change in the weather).  The deer must have been smart enough to stay in bed ...

A young friend of mine got a 80# Doe last evening in the National Forest. Can't post a pic as it was with one of those other bows. However it brings out a good story and a great feeling for me.

I met (Chris and his father) out in the National Forest, close by, hunting, back when I first moved back down here from Maine. He was about 15 then, now he's 29. Not long after I met them I helped him get started on archery, at his request and with his dads support (wheelie bow). Real nice, country folk - he and his sister home schooled by his dad. Always pleasant and friendly. He and his dad hunt as often as possible with all means they can, right around here, and do well. I ran into his dad, Jimmy, at the grocery store Fri. and he said Chris wanted to switch to trad and a long bow (I had mentioned it to him in the past on occasions). I told Jimmy to bring Chris over anytime and I'd be glad to start him off, as I have a lot of folks.

Sat. AM the season started (I didn't go out as no sign anywhere near my stand). Jimmy and Chris surprised me by showing up at my door about mid-morning. I was tickled, since I was sort of bummed about not being out in the woods. I started him off with a 35# Browning Wasp Recurve I had picked up in a trade a few weeks back, for just such purposes. He said he'd had a fill of the weight and tinkering , etc. with the wheelie bows and had lost some confidence. After a couple hours of watching great form and, with very little corrections, seeing him go from not so good, to 3 arrow groups anyone of us would die for. I sent them home with the bow, a tab, an arm guard, and some arrows, with this advice, "From here on out it's just practice, Chris. I can point out some things to help you more and I would love to shoot with you anytime, and we might even help each other. Shooting is always more fun with two or more but basically the more you practice the better you'll get, with or without me." I told him to take the gear and practice until he felt confident to switch over, to give me a shout (he lives just down the road) anytime he wants to shoot, and if he feels like it we'd go out into the National Forest together and hunt.

I know this is long but the bottom line is Jimmy called me today to tell me Chris felt so much better about his shooting, etc. after yesterday's session (and some more practice at his house) that he decided to go out last evening, though he hadn't planed to. Of course he couldn't use the trad bow (must be 40# here) but he got the doe with his "other bow" and tomorrow they are going to show me a couple "new" places to go - close by - LOL.

Oh, yes, Chris is ready to get a trad bow as soon as he can - he loves it, and feels he'll do even better - with the "freedom" of it.

Good going, Bernie.  I'd love to hear where those "close by" places are. Just out of curiosity, of course, because I never had much luck there locally....just never could find a decent food source or reliable trails.  PM me with the details if you wish - I promise not to tell nor to go there.  Less'n I move back to the coast when I retire, that is.  ;)

Tom, mostly those "places" are in the same areas I took you walking "way back when", I hunted those areas. However, it's been so long since I've hunted the Croatan that subtle little changes have  (or may have) altered things some. This very close, father & Son team have always hunted the same basic areas (close to home), stay on top of the small changes, and always do well on deer (with the son almost always doing better than his dad - but I think there has always been some parental deferment to the son there - LOL - putting him in the best spot, etc.) I used to run into them a lot, when I hunted there, - walking in (or out) together, chatting on the "CC road" at the cars, exchanging sightings etc. We've always got on very well and enjoyed talking about things in general at our chance meetings. They also had the town contract for roadside mowing on my street, for some years, so we saw each other often that way too. Good folks and well liked in the community. I'm looking forward to the "walk around" with them this AM, and perhaps a hunt with Chris this evening (Jimmy doesn't actually bow hunt but is most always within radio distance of Chris for his hunts, loves to watch him practice, etc. - still - he feels it extends his season).

Had 5 does,  Two mature and three w/ spots, yesterday afternoon.  The biggest doe came 20yrds but no shot.  Went on in the field (downwind) and didnt like what she smelled.  She bounced off waving the white flag.  The others milled around in the timber and went back the way they came.  One of the fawns came back bout and hr later and offered the shot I wish the mature doe would have.  I quess thats why she is what she is.  Then 20 min before dark and a hugh bobcat came by.  Very fun afternoon in the woods.

No deer sighting last evening but I did have a squirrel come out and yak at me a little before sunset. Spent a nice evening and mentally picked out about three different tree choices, for when I take my climber in there. On the way out of the area, I ran into Chris (and his dad) and he had seen a doe with a really small (late) fawn up another road where he was, a little deeper in.

Title: Re: NC hunters?
Post by: ber643 on September 14, 2010, 08:54:00 PM
Yep, such as there is. Of course there is browse most everywhere - and they roam most everywhere. However you can find preferred food in some spots, such as acorns, etc. There used to be food plots here and there that were maintained by the gov't. A number of years back they had to cut it out due to budget cuts. However they still go in and mow them every other year or something like that, so new growth provides more desireable browse. Also the deer like open areas and tend to move towards them as evening approaches - it says here in fine print - LOL. Also these days they selectively log various areas which also makes new open areas or semi clear-cuts, which also helps as new browse comes in. There are a lot of deer in there but it isn't all that easy to pattern them unless you're really good at it, and work at it (not me). Like most National/State lands.

Killed a six pointer this evening, I wish I could find the camera I still dont understand this one. Everything went picture perfect he came where I thought he would, my shot was at 8-10 yards, then things got interesting. I got down and the arrow showed all signs of a liver hit, what the !@#@$#? I followed a VERY light trail for about 100yds and there he was. necropsy show a shot a shade high but within 4-5inchs of the shoulder blade. Ribtek blew a perfect hole thru the.......liver! Never touched a lung!It was a first for me, but the results are the same either way.

Ive only sat twice. last sat. opening morning, had a cowhorn in velvet come in and got nervous and left before I could make a move. Monday ( my birthday) had a 83lb doe come in late. Shot her almost straight down. Had to unscrew the head and pull the arrow out. Through the backbone and out the brisket. Took the heart out also. Short tracking. Died right there in about 10 seconds. Haven't had a chance to get out since ,but maybe this week. Don

Not had the chance to get out - got on a club now that is still set only (thank you Lord!) it is not great territory but there seems to be good sign. I got eat up with the chiggers and seed ticks!
Got a little spot in there set up, gonan let it calm a couple days then go back in there, hopefully by Wens.
Just been so busy (as alot of us) haven't able to really go back out and hunt since I started this thread.
So a 6 and a slick! cangrats to both. Hopefully a day this week will see some proper fur.

Good kill, Don, congrats.

Well, I finally saw my first of the season, yesterday evening. Unfortunately the nice, big doe saw me at the same time. Story, such as it is, under a New Topic - First Sighting of Season.

My friend Chris asked me last night to start looking for him a good hunting weight (45-50#) trad recurve that he can afford on his limited budget - he's ready to go trad.  Ya gotta love it when a plan comes to fruition - LOL

We hunting game lands all weekend. It was cool at night for a change. My son shot a nice doe. I shot over the back of a doe. I was hoping she would JUMP the string but in the upward motion. Did not work out.

Public land and we both got within 20 yds of deer, I think that is a success in itself.

That's sort of how I feel too, OBXarcher, even though it was closer to 35-40yds (if I had stayed put it would have been 20 - LOL). No, J-dog this area is close to the Cape Carteret end of NC58 (that Haywood Landing is on). I have hunted there before (both turkeys and deer) but not in a number of years now.

Good on ya, Cory! Taken up near where you live or som'ere's else?
Title: Re: NC hunters?
Post by: smokin joe on September 21, 2010, 03:43:00 PM
I think Cory is right about the bright moon this weekend. That and the high daytime heat may keep the deer pretty nocturnal this weekend, but after that things should get serious, especially in the mornings. Work has kept me away from the woods so far, but I have three stands with active sign and nobody else hunting where I hunt, so I should be OK.

Man, Cory, a 2 yard shot -- that must have been something. Were you in a ground blind?

That's right, Don - Cory has that bow you built for him, and he said he was going to hunt it this year, didn't he. He really fell in love with that bow at the spring turkey hunt when you gave it to him. He was shooting it good too, and he does seem to "live his hunting" (I don't know about the corn in the LR stuff though - LOL).

I'm disquested!

I shot my 1st trad deer/ last night @7:20.  She came in at 12yrds.  I was ready and waiting, having heard her coming to me in the leaves.  She came in quick, I didnt have time to get nervous.  I made, what I would consider a good shot. Right behind her shoulder.

She turned and I could see bout 6" of my arrow out of on the off side. I was suprised no pass thru. She tore out of there.  I heard the aluminum arrow catching on everything.  Ting! Ting! Ting! She made a big cirle and everything got quite.  Yes!  She's down.  Wrong!

I got down gathered my stuff and went to the truck.  Made a couple phone calls for some assistance dragging her out.  Approx. 45min I started blood trailing.  This is odd, very little blood.  Drop here, drop there.  Not like what I've experinced in the past w/ the non-trad bow.  Blood got less and less.  Then cut off.  So we backed out.

This was hard for me to do.  Knowing last nights lows was in the 70's.  Meat would probably go bad.  But,Starting to doubt my shot placement after 75yrs tracking job coming to a halt, we backed out anyway.

Went back this morning.  Fifteen yrds past my last blood for the evening prior.  I found all but 6" of the business end of my arrow.  Flethings had splatter blood but no pass thru blood.  Evidently the arrow broke on the back side and backed out.  Up to the fletchings was covered in blood.  But still no futher blood trail from where I found my arrow.  I did a grid search coming up empty.  This was my 1st trad deer, or would have been anyway.

A friend /landowner is going back this afternoon to do some more searching.

This is my second deer that I've lost.  The 1st was 7 or 8 years ago.  Shoulder shot!  Sounded like I head the side of the barn.  And now this one, on what I thought was a double lung.  Apparentlly NOT, last blood was found approx 100yrs trail. From what I've seen in the past, a double lung shot deer doesn't run that far.

    :banghead:

I hate that this has happened.

We all do, (I certainly do and have had it happen) and unfortunately, sooner or later, it happens to an awful lot of us. It always bums us out. Quite often (more times then folks think) a scenario like that occurs when a shot is high on the deer and sort of straight across, either because we are even with them, or a defection of the arrow, after entering the deer, sends it straight across instead of downward. So - most bleeding goes into the body cavity, below where there is any hole for it to leak out. Also quite often the deer will survive and heal up - fantastic how they have the capacity to do that. I shot a big doe out in California (years ago) that it turned out was missing the lower part of a front leg from an obviously old wound (she had two healthy yearlings with her BTW). When my buddy and I feild dressed her you could see where she was carrying "old" stomach contents where she had been shot, and it leaked out into the cavity, and then somehow her body formed a seal of tissue that kept it from her vitals and entrails. She had gone on living (and breeding) a healthy life. The meat on her was in perfect condition too. her wounds were gun wounds - it doesn't just happen with trad gear. You did the best you could (and/or were "supposed" to) at the moment. It's OK to regret the outcome (we all need to be humbled by our choice of sport from time to time) but don't let it live with you (other than as a lesson). You'll do better next time. If the deer does by chance die, nature will use her, my friend, trust Mother Nature to make things balance out. Good luck in the future.

Bernie's right, theres 3-4 in. between the tops of the lungs and bottom of the spine. If the arrow goes thru there it will touch nothing important. I killed a 8pt a couple of years ago in dec. that I shot with a bow in sept. He had a helluva scar but felt good enough to be lookin a lady friend.

Found my deer!  Thanks to the vultures.  It ran another 150yrs and went down in the cotton field.  I knew the shot looked like a kill shot.

Not an ideal 1st trad kill.  But my 1st none the least.

Man, I was wanting some backstraps.  Maybe soon!!!

Was there enough left for an autopsy to see where the shot truly was and what it did or didn't hit?  Definately doesn't sound like a double lung shot, but would be interested to see what you did actually hit, or if the arrow deflected.

That's ashame, but at least you got some closure.  Now go get your real first trad kill and get some fresh backstraps!!!!  Good luck!  NC season is kicking my butt so far.  I hate hunting when it's 90 degrees!

This coming week ber!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I gotta take the family to Asheboro zoo!
I have a feeder out in this one area and have a few hitting it. But it seems they are there at midnight! Hopefully I will go sit in my ground blind Mon. evening and get one early to come in.

It seems I am internet hunting this season so far!!!!!!!!!!! living the hunt through yalls stories! Just been killed so far with the FD.

Campbell those things happen man, it stinks yeah but you keep hammering them - least you had closure. 15 yrs ago I knocked one DOWN I mean she was flopping on the ground with an arrow in her. Well she was followed by a buck which I swithed my attention to as the doe regained her composure and ran away. I thought she aint goign far! well I never found her - I was distraught! to say the least ------------- A man O knew killed her in gun season and returned my BHd. I know you found yours dead but kinda similar stories. it just happens, but many that are "lost" do recover.

Good hunting to all - I will be away for a couple days but I hope yalls hunts are full of excitment.

J

My freind/landowner gave me the call this afternoon.  He didnt get to close b/c of the smell.  Vultures have already done a number on her by what he has described.  I will swing by in the morning to check it out for myself.

I'm sure with the 95degree heat and scavangers, that there will NOT be much of an autopsy.  I dont think my stomach can handle it.  I will howerver take note on the entry/exit wounds.

Closure is good, even in bad circumstances.

Thanks everyone.  And good luck to my fellow NC hunters.  The coming days, it seems the weather will cooperate for us hunters.  The 80degrees highs will be a nice welcome.

That's a bummer, LCH but you'll teach 'im (or another one) next time.

I went out with Chris again yesterday evening. We were hoping the deer would sense the pending front moving in but apparently it's not happening like they predicted - yet. It was comfortable when the breeze was up but every time it laid down, it was immediately HOT. Still a nice evening sit though. Chris was in a ladder stand down in a creek bed, and I was on a low oak ridge above it. Neither of us saw deer but I was amused by 4 squirrels - one of which was NOT amused by my being there - LOL He had been in the tree right above me, and when Chris came up from the creek bed he wanted to know what that weird racket had been - because the fool squirrel had given himself a sore throat, or something.

I expect Chris to get his "New to him" trad bow from Paul in the mail tomorrow or Tuesday, and we are hoping for better (less heat) days in the coming week - and maybe a little rain, or at least clouds.

Good luck J-dog - and all.

Worst is - this year we can finally bow hunt on Sundays in NC - but only on private land. However we don't have access to any, just yet this year. we are checking it out though. Chris is really anxious to start carrying his "lighter" trad bow (as soon as we get it all set up to hunt). I told him last night , after asking him to hold my Anneewakee Addiction while I turned my boots up, "Yeah, that's why I keep handing mine to you - to keep you fired up on trad." LOL

Got a Buck in S.C. September 3rd hunting in the river swamp close to where I live. Rack was not much but deer weight was 210lb. Almost had a shot at a feral Hog two weeks ago. Wind was swirling and I'm sure he got a nose full and the deal was off. Had a good Doe slip by me last saturday morning. Next morning heard Deer coming from behind me, then they stopped and started blowing. This went on for about 15 minutes. Might need to name that stand site Hurricane Branch after all that blowing.  Will try to get a pic of deer posted. Good to hear from you Preston.

Still waiting for the temperature to drop and it looks like it may be getting there. This is the year that I want to take a deer with primitive equipment. Several of the guys around the shop have taken on that goal also. One of them has already taken a doe with an arrow and point that I knapped, so I guess that they really will take a deer. It may take a while but for me it has to be a close (10-12yds) shot that feels right. It doesn't matter whether it's a buck or a doe as long as it doesn't have spots, or has a fawn with it with spots.

I hope to, Cory, good lord willing.

Chris, got his bow in the mail today, a well behaved Montgomery Wards black and brown  beauty. I invited he and his father over as soon as they called me about it arriving. We made a Flemish B50 string for it, served it, and installed a string nock point on it. Then we went outside to shoot it (and my Addiction, Blackie, also - LOL). Chris very quickly got familiar and friendly with it after I tried it out for a couple shots. He was doing real well in no time at all. Dead 3D deer and turkeys all over the place. another day i will show him how to quiet it down with fur, etc. and readjust it some, after the string stretches in a little more. I see no Problem in him hunting with this bow (soon) whenever he feels ready. He is very focused when shooting. I'll try to remember to get a pic next time. Almost as much fun as hunting - LOL.

He (Chris) shot my Anneewakee Addiction for the first time today also, and I think he already is saving for one for next season - LOL. He got 2 out of 2 10s at 12 yards - then I took it away from him    :D  .

The only thing that excited me was 3 longbeards eating in one spot the last 3 days in a row, prospects for this spring.I guess the does had better look out because when it gets cold i get hungry and with no big bone on camera something is gonna get shot. Well, everybody in Eastern NC got more than enough rain looks like, even as seen on the national news - anywhere from 12 to 20 inches in some places. My little corner of the world fared well as we are on the highest ground around (although still not very high) but Jimmy's rain gauge registered 18-19" since last Sunday, right around the corner. There was/is flooding, literally, all around me. The rain ended for us around 7:30 last evening but our pre-planned Fri. eve hunt may well be off, even so. Tomorrow the black powder boys will be in the Saturday woods, full force, though we still can use bows (during those two weeks) for the first time this year. However, we can't even get into the Croatan Forrest, as the road is washed out right near our end (and at the other end too) as well as near one of our spots (where I saw my one deer, earlier - LOL) and other low places. Well, I do have a couple ideas in mind that I/we might be able to get to for a sit. I can't "walk-in" like I could have a few years back but these places are close to the edge and not hunted much. We'll see, the deer should be up and about, feeding, after all their bedding and hunkering down the last few days..

I heard that, Rudy. We are too - not necessarily by choice. Turns out all roads to the National Forrest (Croatan) around here are closed by the Forestry Dept., due to washouts and/or flooded road areas. Jimmy did hear them discussing on his scanner that they had to get on them quickly, both for the Contract Loggers and the hunters so we are hoping for some quick repairs. They are not handled by the Highway Dept., which is good, since they have their hands full with the state roads/highways.

LOL - sounds about like a viable plan, ncrm. Sounds like Bertie County and Windsor was one area that really got it bad water-wise according to the TV and their videos. Of course water doesn't bother deer a whole lot (not near as much as most people), deer go through it like one of those amphibious cars, that's why they love swamps. Good luck Sunday.

We got it BAD around here Bernie farmer up the road said 20" here locally. I had to go check on the school late thrusday night (I'm the fix-it boy) and ended up tow cars outta the water for 3 hours. People just don't think, I was in a dodge ram with a 4" lift and told a guy in a honda civic. "You cant get across its pushing it in this truck". the deputy how was there and I go to turn around the next car and he goes anyway! Of course he stalled and the water pushed him in the ditch. Deputy wrote him a ticket when he ask for a tow out I had misplaced the chain somehow.........   ;)    :knothead:

LOL - I hate to say it but serves him right. They had one down this way that folks were doing their best to wave back - kept right on coming - in his PT Cruiser - got washed off the road, turned over and disappeared. It was on TV. don't know if there has been any resolve or even how many were in car. Like you said, folks just don't think - or believe the power in moving water.

Got work and family business over with this morning just ran in to the house to get my stuff together and found my wife washed me camo in with the rest of the wash. So I kinda like washing my camo in just baking soda and water so doing that now. Will get to the club this evening and HOPEFULLY get a chance to bloody an arrow. If not it will be a good sit w/Mac the best of company - after the week of rain and the dealing with contractors and pumping water out of the town and all that jazz - to get in the blind and wait for a deer will be great.

It is good that bow is legal during muzzleloader this yr!!! i still just went and reread the regs to be sure LOL - do not want a warden educating me on the road.

Hope all who head out today be safe and successful however you define successful!

WOW WOW WOW what an exciting day i saw so much deer movement it wasn't funny. i have 2 blown shot opportunities under my belt. i went in the woods kinda late about 7:30a.m. i was told to expect rain, so i wasnt expecting to be in the woods to long. i had deer moving all around me. i put on the stalk and started to move in on a small group of does, i guess they thought they saw movement . at the same time i had crouched behind some tall scrub oaks and stayed put and watched, i guess i didnt spook them cuz they stuck around for about 20 minutes, milling about here and there. 2 of the does i guess were headed up a trail to my left where i had come in at, i saw the 2 through a small clear spot about the size of a garbage can but the shot would have been 30 yrds or better. i had to let them walk. i have no clue where the other four went. about an hr later i put the stalk on a lone doe, and she blew me out big time huffn and puffn every step of the way as she bounded outa there. i desided to circl wide and to the left to get back where i origanally. but i came up with nothing. i decided to get home and get my climbing tree stand. and get back to where i firs was surounded by does. by the time i got back there were to big does feeding and milling about right where i was gonna get up in a tree. im so surprised i didnt spook them cuz my treestand was still on my back. i crouched down and dreww an arrow from my kanati quiver and nocked it on johns personal anneewakee addiction recurve i was all set to draw when the one doe raised her head suddenly. satisfied that it was nothing she went back to feeding . by this time my hear is pounding outa my chest so hard i was suprised they didnt hear it cuz it sure was loud to me. i had to have been no more than 12 -15 yrds. i came to full draw now or never, isuw her sillouett perfectly through that fan like swamp weed stuff we have growing all over the southeast. well i let her fly the arrow just went under her belly and hit a berm right behind her, the kind a logging skidder leaves behind. she lit outa there like nobodies business and the other doe ran the same direction but stopped at about 25 yrd looked at me blew reel hard and hauld butt. WOW WOW WOW WOW WHAT A DAY! it took me almost 2 hrs to calm down from that adreniline rush wow! y'all have a great week ruddy

LOL - Good on ya, Rudy. The thrill of the hunt is a lot of times far better than a kill - especially when you get a clean miss (as opposed to a wound that gets away). Best part is that you usually learn more and more each time a close contact like that occurs, and each time you think it over (relive it). In the meantime you are having a ball.

The Forrestry folks tell us down here we have more roads closed than anywhere and it may be awile. They are bringing a specialist down to survey and estimate what's needed apparently. In the meantime folks can either walk in or ride a bike - but no vehicles of any kind. A couple guys went around the barricade (some always do/will) and the ranger sent them out with only a warning - this time. Jimmy and Chris walked in and relayed all the info to me. It's a blessing to have friends!

I asked this question originally on Don B.'s nice buck post, but would like to get feedback from here also:

It's a well-known fact and corroborated by the NC wildlife folks, but I never have quite understood if rutting activity is triggered by photoperiodism, why does it begin a month or more earlier in the eastern part of NC compared to the western half the state? If the amount of daylight hitting deer retinas due to the shortening length of days is what is relevant, sunset time is changing uniformly across the state even though it will begin a few minutes earlier in the east and move westward. Any armchair biologists want to clue me in? Does this phenomenon happen in VA. or S.C.? If so, I haven't heard about it?

I walked in with Jimmy and Chris last evening (with climbers on our backs). Actually hunting different areas but also walked out together. None of us saw deer - or anything else (including mosquitos, as Jimmy said - LOL). We did see 11 turkeys on the way in though. It actually was cool enough to make our hands get a little too cool towards the end of the sit - and still no deer. A neighbor said he saw 3 different doe today but all were running (from something - probably doggers "exercising" their dogs early, or not getting them back up after putting them out for exercise at night). He did see a couple dogs come out from the same area later.

Chris got his package of shafts , adaptors, etc. yesterday where I helped him order things he needs to get his trad gear ready to hunt. Also a  few assesories we both needed. They called the order in to 3 Rivers on Thursday and it got here Monday - they are always quick, even in season - ya gotta love it. When his BHs from ABowyer get here tomorrow or the next day I will show him how to fletch his arrows (for hunt and practice and save him the cost of feathers and fletching the shafts). He's already really shooting good (using my arrows). I'm proud on him - LOL. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see him kill a deer with trad gear this year.

Hunting from the ground is fun but takes a lot of time and experiences for most folks to get it down right for actual shot opportunities with bows (of course some folks seem to be "naturals" at it). If you can get more observation (and maybe a kill or two) to understand their behavior better, under your belt, from your tree stand first it will help the learning process and boost your confidence, Rudy. In my opinion. I've only got one from the ground with trad gear so far and I do about half and half (tree stand is getting heavier every year - LOL)- I think the story is still in the archives. As long as you are seeing deer you are doing good though but, if you spook a given population too often, - soon you won't see them during hunting hours anymore - most usually. They won't put up with the pressure without "going nocturnal". Not trying to be a know-it-all, just my experiences/opinions.

Ber _I have a feeder out in one spot that I hunt. It is a ground hunting only area as no trees in the right spot big enough to get into. These deer for the past month the trail camera has been out have only been nocturnal. I have only filed the feeder twice and hunted there once.

It is really baffling me that these deer act like they are pressured when it is a still set only area and there is no chance of deer hounds pushing them or people bothering them. The president of the club said these deer seem to always be a nocturnal breed!

I am no biologist but was hoping these deer may be more daylight oriented than what I find on game lands. Was my whole intentions and hopes when getting in this club.

Maybe they will change as I have quite a few deer in there on the bait.

J

Yeah have hunted a couple times so far and still have not seen a deer in the woods. I did see one through binos in a cutover on my walk out. It was so dark I could only make out the ears in my binos!

Most all of the deer that I've ever hunted in eastern N.C. have tended towards being nocturnal.
When I'm hunting with my rifle, there's actually not any need of me even getting in my stand until about 45 minutes before dark.
The only deer that I've seen that aren't nocturnal are "city" deer that are NEVER hunted.

Try a spot and just throw your corn on the ground with a camera on it and see what happens.I have had heard of people that have said they have had to leave feeders out for a long time before they would see deer in shooting light.

I have never baited before myself have shot two deer off bait in my life but it was friends piles. It has never been legal where I hunt at on Game lands.

I am ued to hunting pressured deer that have been run by hounds and they are a pain - ussually in the thickest stuff you can possible find! Make cambodia look like Kansas! (from the movie predator)

These seem to be on the same note pad!!!!!!!!!

We all talk about deer "going nocturnal" but actually deer are nocturnal creatures by nature, some genetically more so than others - sometimes we all seem to forget that part -    :D   . Anytime you see deer at other times you are real lucky, real good and/or both. Of course there are times and conditions that make it more of a possibility  to see them during shooting hours or we'd never get one. Factors such as, breeding seasons/rut (may see anytime - LOL), full moon (try in middle of the day), dark of the moon (try early in AM - they may stay out a little later - and perhaps come out a little earlier in evening. This one also can apply on cloudy days/times). This is all "repeated info" to pretty much all of us but we tend to forget it as we get frustrated (or older and can't be quite as dilligent in our pursuit -    ;)   ), or work/family responsibilities, health, etc. claim more of our time - things like that.

Perhaps the best advice I've often heard is: pay attention to all the things you know you should do - when you can - but hunt whenever it is possible for you (personally) to hunt, regardless of whether it's a "good time" or not - after all, it may be the only time you get a chance to hunt.

There are certain dedicated, talented hunters (we all know of some)  who are almost unbelievable in their successes but for most of us it is pretty much a gambling sport, even if now and then it's better calculated gambling.

Just my take on it - when I can (make myself) look at it philosophically and just enjoy the experience    :goldtooth:

Yesterday evening we (Chris, Jimmy, and I) Had got our bikes ready (enough) to use them to get into the National Forrest to hunt. Chris and I went to one area and Jimmy another. Chris showed me a likely spot on the way to his spot. As he was leaving there and i was heading towards a spot to sit, he jumped a doe and two young deer. Chris only saw their backs but I heard the Doe sort of snort and saw her jump into the brush behind a tree, where she turned to look in the direction she had heard Chris walking. I dropped to one knee and nocked an arrow but she was a good 35-40 yds away and showing only her rear haunch to me broadside. It seemed like she hadn't actually seen Chris , as she didn't seem too antsy and just stood there like she was watching in that direction. The one snort she gave sent her yearlings scampering into the brush and I never saw them but Chris saw all three of them (backs only) from where he was standing still. I was hoping that she might turn and come my way, not knowing her youngsters had headed away in the opposite direction. Of course that didn't happen and she finally turned and bounded slowly after the kids - apparently never even knowing I was there. Evidently they were either bedded there or just coming up the small slope when they heard Chris moving through the brush/woods. I also thought it boded well for the evening to come but none of the three of us saw anything else in any of our three areas. It made the hunt exciting in any case, and doubled my personal deer seen for the season to two - LOL.

I made the foolish mistake of using a skinny tired bike (one with speed shift that I figured would make it easier to pedal), forgetting the fact that those no-tread tires are made for the pavement, not for sand and crushed marl roads. I won't make that mistake again - balloon tire bike next time, for sure - shift capability or not. That blasted bike was all over the road, and pretty much going where it wanted to go, not where I wanted it to go. I particularly didn't want it to go in the ditch and toss me in the wet mud - like it chose to do on the way out - LOL. Fortunately - no harm done, and I will not give it another chance! Man that wet mud was cold on my right butt cheek         .

Today I had to take a little trip to keep a Dr. appointment so couldn't get out but tomorrow AM I get to try a morning sit. I'm pumped for that.

I missed on Monday. Medium sized doe behind my father's house near Wentworth in Rockingham Co. He only has 12 acres but has deer everywhere. My fear is that I shoot one but it travels well beyond his boundaries. Hopefully the neighbors will be supportive if I do have to track one onto their land.

Sign here in the piedmont has been good.

Anyone seen signs of any rutting?

Killed two slickheads yesterday. One fullsized and one travel sized. The little ones are better practice (smaller target) and they eat better. I have two spots that are overrun by does and raghorns so i am trying to do some thinning. I seen 5 does altogether in bowrange yesterday evening. I am glad that i finaly got to go, work is still wide open. Going after em in the morning. Later,Preston.

Got a last minute invite to Pungo Lake for extended opening weekend, saw a couple bucks and maybe a dozen does over 4 days, missed a cowhorn in velvet and a doe on the way in to 2 different stands, shot a small doe, got ate up with skeeters, ticks, & poison oak...( in other words...had a fantastic time!!)

At Pungo (it's a neat place - used to hunt there at least once a year) you are lucky you didn't have to fight a Bear for your kill. They think all kills belong to them and they (bears) are seriously protected there. The rangers say if you shoot at one you better have claw/teeth marks on you.

I was finally able to get back to my "batman" site (Thanks to Don) Friday AM, and it was a glorious morning sit  - populated with a bazillion talkative (and very active) squirrels. Didn't see any deer this time but sure was nice just enjoying being there and having the opportunity to sit what amounts to a hardwood forest for these parts. May get in an evening sit there next week. Thanks again, Don.

Good on ya, Cory and Preston

It also sounds like Cory is having a great season.

For lots of reasons I have not been able to get out yet, but Friday will find me in my ground blind and I will be spending Saturday in a tree stand -- at last.

Keep at those deer, guys. The season will be over before we know it.

I went out in the Nat'l forest this eve and sat in a beautiful new(to me) spot but no sighting again. Did see another brood of turkeys with the hen though. Chris saw one but he had just got in his stand and was turning around to pull his gear up. The young buck busted him, blew three times and ran off. Jimmy saw one just after hunting hours, while waiting for Chris and I to come out to join him on the road. Chris got his Abowyer BHs yesterday so tomorrow afternoon is new hunting (and practice) arrow assembly lessons time - LOL. He'll be tickled to have all his own gear ready to go after that.

Oh, they got part of the roads open in the forest (Croatan) today - it's the long way around but it does help some, for some places - like where we were tonight. Didn't have to ride a bike this time - so it was easier staying out of the ditch - LOL.

I gotta take the camera with me too the hunt club. I took david saturday and let him take the boom stick. We saw 6 deer and 37 turkeys and 37 different birds, but the highlight was the biggest freakin bear track I've ever seen. I put both fistes side by side and there still a 1/4 inch width left in the track. I haven't seen him, he may not be the biggest bear I've ever seen but he has the biggest damn foot I've ever seen! I saw a 725 wiegh at the cotton scale a couple years ago didn't really pay much attention to his feet tho.

I got out 3 evenings last week - no luck and saw the signs of disgusting behaviour following a smokepole kill by someone. Gut pile in a plastic garbage bag dumped in the National forest (illegal here, of course), and then torn open by the buzzards - right where I parked on one of the few open dirt roads.

Got out again yesterday evening - still no deer but a flock of nice sized turkeys worked their grazing ways right past my ground seat at about 14 yards. It was a long walk in (to where I saw my first deer this year) since the roads are still mostly closed. My wife got me a nice, new Comfort style bike for my B'day but I don't have it rigged to haul my bow, etc. - yet.

Hunted Pville friday and Sat Friday had 2 dee come in straight from behind me got within 15yrds poppin white oak acorns - try to get around but they weren't having it. Then a rather large coyote came slippin out into the cutdown about 50yrds from me. Coyotes are a new addition to the area and this is the first live one I had seen - time to buy a predator call!

Saturday same stand but the doggers dogs ran em too hard - saw plenty but couldn't even yell at one for a shot - they were not slowin down as they passed. Couple good days, have yet to see deer in the club I hunt though many pics on trail cam.

I guess it's headed for another year of my seeing everything but deer that I can shoot at. Yesterday evening a Racoon came out behind my left shoulder and ambled (with  some purpose) across behind me, and beside my chair at about 6 feet away. I was sitting beside a big tree with some "break-up bushes/limbs around me, and he never even looked at me (or saw me, that I could see), as he angled off away into the denser cover. Now why couldn't that just as easily have been a Deer? (I know - it could have - LOL) Nice overcast evening too.

Oh, when I first got there and was standing in one spot, looking for the "best" place to sit, a large grey squirrel came down the side of a tree about 5 yards in front of me. He stood way out on his tiptoes (the way they do) and stared right at me. The funny part was he had a huge white blaze across his nose and about a third of his tail (at the tip) was white. I don't know which one of us was taking the most intensive look at the other but it was a close contest.

A little hunting update at my place north of Raleigh, NC.

So far, hunting has been good in my NC neck of the woods (my 6acre homestead). Well "good" as far as sightings and some oportunities. As I tell everyone "I do a lot of 'hunting', not a lot of 'catching'."  :)

Last year, as soon as gun season opened up, I never saw another deer. Did they go fully nocturnal? Not sure.

This year is different, I am seeing the same deer over and over again, even during gun season. At one point I was seeing a 6pt or 8pt, but never again after the first few weeks. I am hoping he is not harvested.

I was unsuccessful during bow season. I hurried a shot and scared the crap out of a doe as the arrow slammed into a tree right next to her. Ugh!

Launched another arrow at that 6pt buck, but it was slightly off target and the string must have slapped my arm or something. He did some sort of Matrix-movie-like move and dodged the arrow like Neo dodged bullets. It just barely missed him as he lunged back, down and away. Ugh again!

Gun season opened up, I grabbed my 30-.06 and told the wife: "Need to put meat in the freezer." A few days of that, and I snagged a doe at about 15 yards (could have arrowed her! Grr!) Ah well, not the satisfaction of a bow kill, but... we have venison. I have meat in the freezer now. I put the rifle away and switched back to the self-bow. If I get no more deer, so be it.

Hopefully... I shoot a bit more accurately. I haven't seen that buck, but there is another smaller one (large-ish spike) that is tearing up all the saplings in the area. I am watching him. He came right into my lane the other night, but it was just too dark for me to take an ethical shot.

Wish me luck. I put a pause on hunting my back yard for a few days to calm the deer a bit. Then... back to it. Everyone in my neighborhood is hunting their land as well, so hopefully the pressure is not too much. They seem to only be hunting on weekends, which is good.

Best of luck to the rest of you.

First day of muzzle here in Central. Missed a doe Thurs. String dip again. Arrow just over her back. Gotta aim lower I guess.

Need some clarification Tarheels, if hunting my own family land, can I use a bow during muzzle season? I read the reg but it's not clear to me. It states archery is allowed in permitted areas during muzzle, but doesn't explain what permitted areas means. Areas needing a permit or ares where archery is permitted?

I am lucky to hunt in a place that gets very little gun season pressure so the deer on that piece of land stay pretty calm through gun season. So I'll keep bow hunting through the gun season and hope the buck I'm after shows up near one of my stands while I am there.

Thanks everyone.

I'll tell you Bernie in my experience its about a waste of time bowhunting an area that's dog hunted. I wish you lived closer to me - I could put you on some deer.

Mike - are you the guy I sold the Iron Mtn longbow to? That was a killing machine for me even though I only had it one year. I killed several deer and a turkey with it.

By the way, the 8 point I posted a pic of I called in. I had bleated(can call) 7 or 8 times and then grunted 7 or 8 times. 5 minutes later I look to my left and he's there at less than 20 yards looking at the base of my tree - definitely looking for the deer that made the calls(me  :)  )
I like to blind call like that this time of the year - its worked for me many times.

I got me a new ILF recurve bow I'll be trying to  break in with a deer kill next. Its a Hoyt Excel riser with Trad Tech Black Max Carbon limbs. I dropped my weight back to about 45 pounds and my shooting has really tightened up. Can't wait to see how it performs on a deer.

You boys keep the updates coming in.

Wally,

Yes. I'm still shooting the Iron Mtn.  When I bought it from you, I had 4mth old twins.  I couldn't put the time into it being it was my 1st trad bow. Had to wait a couple of years before my like turned back to some kind of normal.

During the 08 season was the 1st time I took it to the woods.  Man I felt I was handicaped.  Only took it a few times, could not fully make the switch from the wheels.  Beginning of last year, I hit it hard.  Praticed alot!!!  Gave my wheelie bow to my brother.  Last year never paid off. Had alot of close encoutners and missed two bucks. One really nice 18" wide 8pt. Both shots were high. But I was having fun.

This year, I kept  practiceing.  When I walked into the woods for the 1st time this year, I didn't feel hadicaped at all.  I felt lethal with the Iron Mtn.  So far this season, I've killed two deer and a coyote.  And I've got this week off from work.  Hopefully some more success that I can add some more notches to the Iron Mtn.

Here's the Iron Mtn all camo-ed up. I also put a leather grip on her.  I felt I had big shoes to fill when you had told me about all the kills you had with it.

I've actually got a Black Creek T/D Banshee ordered that might be here in time to hit the woods with this year.  So the IM may be taking a back seat for a while!!

Talked to Rudy (broketooth) a little while ago (on phone) and he said that he had a great day hunting Sat. Said he posted it on here but I haven't found it yet (no deer yet but a great time anyway).

Seen a nice wide racked buck checking scraps @ 7:20 this am.  And a buddy seen another buck just after daylight, running off a small 4pt.

They seem to be cruising, scent checking does in my neck of the woods. Great time to be hitting it hard!!!!!!!!!

They're definitely on the move.  Had 2 behind me this evening with no shot and another 10 yards away behind a cedar tree (again, no shot).  Unfortunately, seeing lots of deer hit on the side of the road too.

Next couple of weeks are going to be good.

Let a small doe pass this am. Let a button buck pass this evening. Neither had a clue I was there.
Funny thing is, I built a tree stand yesterday beside my ground blind and got in it this am for the first time. The doe was on me at dawn. Barely seen as she approached, but she stayed long enough for the sun to get high enough for me to see her good. She was this year's fawn.
The button buck came in at about 5:30 this afternoon and wouldn't leave. I had to try making slight noises to get him out of the area so I could climb down. Little one inch buttons. maybe if he lives thru gun season and into next yeara he might be a good opportunity.

I'm waiting for a mature doe or a buck with antler showing. I just couldn't shoot the little ones. If I have to drag one out I want it to be a chore

i missed again $*@#$&%%#! this morning about 8 a.m. i saw a lone deer entering my area about 100 yrds out, i grunted a couple times looked like it went back to where it came from, less than 5 min later here it came right through the center of the oak tree grove i was hunting near.he headed straight for the scent wick i put up. i think he was a little skittish. i started to draw but he looked like he was ready to duck. i guess he decided to get out of there and started to trot off so i did a mouth bleat he stopped dead in his tracks and i sent an arrow right under his belly right at 20 yrds. now im 0 and 4 arrrrrggggg. ruddy

Bud B.,
You can use a bow during muzzle loader season and during regular gun season, but you have to wear a hunter orange hat or vest starting the first day of muzzle loader season. As I understand it, you do not have to wear orange on your own land, but you better double check that.

Cory,
Way to go, another doe. Good job.

In my limited time out I have been seeing deer -- saw 4 last weekend. I expect I'll have one in range and get the job done in the next week or so.

Keep those broadheads sharp, guys. And stay safe out there.

Joe

Last evening under a nice overcast sky, I went to one of my favorite spots. It has been a good crossing/feeding area in the past and will be this season as time progresses (it says here in fine print - LOL). Had a busy evening but still no deer around me - yet. Had plenty of company - 3 or 4 squirrels around most of the evening, a Pilliated Woodpecker feeding and flitting, a gun hunter walked almost up to my seat before I finally caught his eye, (he was some shocked and turned back in an apologetic manner - I would have motioned for him to pass through, if he had given me time before he turned away in embarrassment - LOL), and I saw a fox on my way back to the car. I took some pics when I first got there and will post them in another thread.

Heading back to the tree stand in the morning. The rain we had in central NC will help getting to the stand be a little quieter. Rut is full swing I believe. Deer are being hit everywhere. I drive US 220 from Asheboro to GSO for work. Had a deer get hit by an SUV in front of me a few nights ago coming home.

Hopefully they will be moving near my stand  :)

As a general rule, deer don't like wind (any better than I do - LOL). They like the woods to be quiet - so they can hear us and other predators, Rudy. Some folks score hunting in the wind but I've never had much luck when the wind is up - even back when I had "luck" - LOL.

Nothing but squirrels, Friday evening (didn't hear any shots either, though).

Good on ya, Lee!

Fellow tarheels I've been lurking to see how it's been going.  My home is in Pender County and my dad and brother still live there.

Went home year before last for bow season and thought I would burn up.  The bay bushes were thicker than I remembered and tracking was very hadr in that stuff. This brings up the next thing I have.

We have a 30 day gun season here in Arkansas and 5 months of bow.  Anyone want to come bowhunting let me know and I'll be glad to take you.  Woods are not near as thick and lots of deer.  From Wilminmgton to my house took around 17 hours to give an idea of how long a drive it is.

Running dogs in Ar is leagal on private land but not on our gamelands.  Plus most of our gamelands are bow only.  Don't have to worry about dogs or rifles.

Just something to think about for next year.  A group of us Arkansas trad hunters organized a hunt at one of our national forests back in Oct.  We plan to make this a yearly event.  Out of state license for 3 days is about $125.  I can't remember the exact amount at the moment but that's pretty close.

I put a show of sorts together to remember the trip by.  Check it out and if it is something you would like to do and can save the money up we would be happy to have you come hunting with us.

It is public land but lots of deer.  Between the 6 of us we saw over 80 deer in four days of hunting.

Bernie that's what I said after seeing 32 deer and only one long shot.

Forgot to add how many other hunters were seen on this public land in four days.  O, zip, nadda zilch.  There was another guy hunting that was staying at the campground but we never saw him in the woods.

Flying would be cheaper than driving and I'd be happy to pick anyone up at the airport.  I have to drive right by it on my way to the lake.  I can get you back too.

Wow - the things dreams are made of. Afraid it is just not in the cards for me though - as much as I would like it to be. I really do think it is a fine thing for you to be offering though. Like Ruddy, if anyone does get to go and join you, I sure want to read the story about the hunt, and enjoy it second-hand. BTW arky714 certainly seems to be a solid "booster" too - the state population ought to be in for an increase - especially in traditional archer type folks -    :archer:

congrats on the 8point lch. i cant wait to see the pics. i had an interesting day in the woods, due to the time change it has been difficult to say the least to get in the woods early.i got in the woods just as twilight was hittin and got to my ground blind to sit and wait, well not but a few minutes into the sit a blue fox strolls by with a purpose. kinda surprised me. well when the sun started coming through the trees i decided i didnt like it so i picked up and moved to another location , in a fire break between 2 dead falls. my eyes were about ground level, got my hood on and got settled in. about 30 min later i look up and what appears is a red fox headed straight for me, i had to reacte fast, i stood up and held my arms in the air and growled at him, ive never seen an animal backpedal so fast. it reall raised the hair on my neck, nov 20 is just around the corner. this afternoone i sat another location , nodded out and woke up to the sound of wing beats. when i opened my eyes i had 5 turkeys feeding from me at about 50 feet away. purrin away and milling about. finally heading off in the opposite direction cant wait until spring. very interesting day to be in the woods. shoot straight , ruddy

One of the does was HUGE like P&Y huge. Gonna hit it again this Saturday but my mind si starting to drift to hogs. We worked our hog camp last week and things look promising. OK Tarheels, What are you seeing as far as deer behavior?

I had a yearling doe and a yearling button buck near my stand again this morning. The same twins I've seen several times this year.

The doe came near first. She ate LOTS of acorns. Noisy eater too. SHe then was about 20 yards to my right and I saw her squat and take a looooong pee. She stood there for a long time twitching her tail as if she's coming in...

OK, she's doing this for quite a while and then the button buck comes almost straight in to her and as he's about to get close enough to mount her (I really thought he was going to) she walks off. He then noses her spot and then positions himself over her fresh urine and does it too, for a long time.

They stayed near me for about an hour. She tried bedding twice and he was slowly tailing her and she got up each time as he approached her.

They eventually meandered away.

Watching their activity I got the feeling she was in or close to estrus. Is this possible for a yearling?

And he seemed like he wanted to do something, but wasn't quite sure what to do.

I've seen more deer this year while hunting than in all my hunting years combined. I've only not seen deer maybe 3 or 4 times. Every other time it's been multiple deer. I had six under my stand last weekend. If nothing else, I'm getting an education on thier habits.

The acorn crop in Rockingham County has been remarkable. They should have plenty to get them fattened up for the winter. Randolph has a good crop to.

Very little in the way of deer sign at all. Few scrapes, few rubs, really nothing much. Went into some old haunts today looking a particular buck and found his same rubs and scrapes made he makes every yr. For three yrs now this guy passes through this one area rubbing same  tree and same scrape. He is just in an area I swear to cut trails into every yr and fail to. He is too far back to hunt without cutting some decent trails to come out on. Google earth says it is a mile and a half as the crow flies from any rd, walking is further the way you have to access that place. It is a swamp between Pollocksville a catfish lake - truly like middle of no where, think a gps even looks a tyou like your stupid when you get in there. Though I forgot that today, turns out daughter was playing with gps and I left it at the house!!!!!!!!!   "[dntthnk]"  12 dollar compass coupled with a 10 dollar map saved the day. Important skill my Marine Corps Father taught me well.   :D

Been a way off yr all the way round here. Good note is my lab finally got to make a blood trail and recovery for some dog runners yesterday on this same rd. That was COOL! and we were both tickled - though his main role is feather getter, I hope he will double duty as a trailer. He got to do the feather thing this evening. :-)

I have been in the woods quite a bit this season. The one thing I have noticed is the lack of abundant buck sign (rubs and scrapes).
Right now I am seeing bucks roaming looking for does, the activity really picked up this past week.
All the does I am seeing are extremely skittish and their fawns are by theirselves alot. This indicates to me that breeding is happening now.
To me the rut seems to be a week or two behind but so has the whole season.
I was seeing bachelor groups of bucks up to the end of October. Just my observations.LCH

J-dog -

Funny you mention Pollocksville. My wife's folks are from Pollocksville and Trenton. We've been there twice this year for funerals. She has a large family. Macon and Gerogia Harriett's decendents. They lived on Hwy 17 near Ten Mile Fork.

We were there for sad reasons but I couldn't help notice how much sign I saw while walking the family land for a short spell. Deer tracks everywhere. I can attest to your need for a cut trail down there. Some of the areas I've seen are hands and knees only areas. Unbeleivably thick. Even for dogs.

Are you hunting public land? Maybe a trail cutting party is in order. Feb/March is a good time to cut your trails. I would like to go back down there for reasons other than funerals.    :(

Bud i have heard that last name mentioned before??? I will ask David and Daniel as I know that call a couple places we hunt around by Harriett.

Thick is not the word! Cambodia looks like Kansas in some of these places! and that is exactly what this buck is crossing into - We used to be able to take a bush hog and cut paths how we wanted in there this buck rubs and scrapes on the remnants of one of those paths. On the far side of a fire path is club land that they only push dogs through never still hunt. and it is pretty oak ridges and woodie ponds. Now they make it illegal to take tractors out there. I bought a weedeater with a blade just for this reason - had to wait for cold weather though -- there are rattle snikkies out there!

Be glad for yall to go, cant promise deer but can promise a hunt! During bow season should be good if yotes leave us any deer, right now the doggers have it wrapped up though I have shot a deer off their hounds; sorry not that proud and she stopped!

Good on ya, Don.

My report is: Nutin', nutin', nutin', and the same around here for most all of the guys hunting this area that I've talked to - for a couple or three weeks now. I did have a neighbor who took a friend out Fri. (with his dog - and the friend saw and bagged a nice spikehorn). The neighbor said there was a larger buck chasing the smaller one before it ran to his friend. The smaller one sure smelled "rutty"  when I looked in the truck at him - FWIW. It was nice just to see one (even if it was dead - LOL).

Ruddy, "broketooth", and I are planning to go out in the National Forest around Wed.(day depending on the weather) this week, just so I can introduce him to the area down here a little. We'll mosey/look around some and then pick a place for an evening stand/sit.

So glad you enjoyed it as much as i did, Ruddy. Anytime - as long as it doesn't look like my thin ol' blood will freeze up on me - LOL. I really wasn't sure whether it was Rudy, or the penny I found, as we left the car to walk into the forest, that brought me the luck. Yep, I finally got to see two more deer, as well as an 8-flock of turkeys (makes four deer seen for the season now, and is perhaps a good sign - after all, my total DOUBLED - LOL). If I had been in a tree I might have got a shot - they weren't real spooked just didn't like the looks of me and my chair, so didn't come on through the area. I got a pic of Ruddy while we were loading up to leave, and i think he got one of me. I'll post the one I took a little bit later this AM and perhaps he'll post his.

Dang i aint been on here in a month and Ruddy is posting pictures of turds.Wish ya well in your new spot i hope it works out for ya.I have hunted a little here lately killed a real nice nine the day after turkey day with my traditional Browning 7mm a-bolt. Going in the morning with my Mathews,my acs blew up a little while back so trad hunting isn't an option right now. I sent the limbs back but no update so far.Been seeing a lot of good bucks for next year if they can make it. 15-16 inch wide 7's 8's and 1 9 that was almost gonna get it but held off.He better be glad i killed the other nine the day before or he would have eat lead. Seen one six point the other day about 18 inches wide but he had short tines and no mass so i hope to see him in a year or two. Good to get back on here and chew the fat with my ol buddies.Hope all yall are well and good luck.Later,Preston

Good pictorial, Ruddy. As per our Phonecon early this evening, I'll be glad to join you on a hunt in the National Forest up your way next week. Looking forward to it. We'll talk again in the next couple of days and set it up.

Preston, you behave yourself and take care of the family, buddy, - good to hear from you. Sorry to hear about the ACS.

We are finer than frog fur, thanks. Freezing sounds about right. It's going to be cold down here too, for the next couple weeks. That
s good for deer movement (they say) but i don't move so well then - LOL. I am going to try to get out at least once with Rudy, in his neck of the woods, this week though.

the weather people are calling for record low's tomorrow morning. my fellow carolina trad gang members , please heed this warning and dress appropriately hypothermia is no joke! you can get it just as easy in 40 degrees  or 17 degrees. to all those trying to get out and finish the season please be careful. if you get cold pack it in, there will be another day. hypothermia is not worth risking your life over. be careful out there. shoot straight . ruddy

Such a shame. God be with his family.

Nice bear pic Jason (we found out today J-dog is a Jason and not a James - LOL). It was a pleasure meeting you and your Black Lab, buddy. Enjoyed the hunt and watching the racoons - two large ones and two medium size - those two climed a tree, either to eat or play, or both. Stayed around for a half hour or so. Beautiful woods and fields. Lots of fresh deer tracks and "scat" (also from various other critters) - and we only saw two other hunters - not really in our chosen location. Good day - but I'm still chilly this evening - LOL.

I haven't reported in awhile, I took off work yesterday so I could hunt tne cold snap. Baby it was COLD, but worth it. I found a ridge runnin beside the river swamp, i knew it would be a gold mine. I saw 5 yesterday morning and noticed a limb off a small tree under my stand was in little bit in the way. when I went in the in the afternoon I took a bucket of corn in with me. After I dumped the corn I flipped the bucket over and cut the intruding limb and a half a fistful of corn fell out. I saw 6 deer that afternoon 4 to far and you guested it 2 under me eating the 50 kernels of corn that fell out of the bucket. they stay close to 2 hours under without offering a shot, they were so close I could hear the crunchin as they eat. Oh well it was fun.

Any of you fellers located a little further west closer to me?  School ends Dec. 17th and I have a few weeks off before the next semester starts.  I'd like to get together with some people and hunt rabbits or deer or whatever season is still in at the time.  I'm thinking of heading to Perkins game land to check it out and a guy on another site told me to check out Lake Jordan.

LOL - I hear y'all (Lord but I hate cold weather - even when I'm "geared up" for it -        .) I may just take you up on that though, Don. One thing about it, I do know that is a good stand to go to for about the last 2 or 3 hours of the day and stand a better than even chance of seeing a deer. My old friend, the big bruin, might even come out to "play" - and take my mind off the cold - LOL. Wed is about the best day for me this week (and weather-wise), I'd say - so let's say it's a plan, unless something comes up that I can't make it (and I would let you know if that occurred). Thanks for the offer, my friend, and I'll see you then - good Lord willing.

Oh, Ruddy, just hold onto the cords and we'll keep them in mind as "emergency equipment"      :D

Another empty morning (saw one Squirrel and one Flicker). At least the rain/sleet was very spotty and light until just after i got back to the car, and i got home before the roads down the way i was going got too bad. Anybody from around the Boone area?  I'm taking my kid back to school around the second week in Jan. and wondered if anyone wanted to go Grouse, Quail, Woodcock hunting.

I no longer have any idea where to go in the Boone area.  I went to school there 74-79 but now there's a giant Walmart sitting on my old trout creek and summer homes in my grouse woods.

I've been thinking back on the old days where I kept my shotgun and bow in the dorm and was able to go hunting pretty much where the football stadium is now.  Oh... the good old days.

Tradgangers from NC....

Is anyone up for a quail hunt that has some land available? I have a good quail dog. A loveable and energetic Brittany. Wild or pen raised ('cause around here pen raised is all you're gonna get)

I'm up to driving at least two hours from Asheboro to get to a good place. Maybe more if'n it's down east.

And still in for rabbits on some local gamelands Kenneth. PM heading your way....

Bud,
You do realize those quail will have to be taken with a bow!

Brings to mind a rabbit hunt I went on at the Guilford archery club where the only rabbit harmed was one that had the poor judgement to stop and laugh at my shooting.  The dogs caught him and I got the last chuckle....fried rabbit & gravy w/mashed taters, mighty tasty.

Sorry, about this little "joke", guys - (worst of it is that, like this evening, the wind has been so bad in NC this winter, these are the only decorations we can have turned on half the time. However I did get pics of everything on one day, and posted them to my Facebook.)

We have found some Woodcock down on Sandhill's game lands if you are interested.  Never found a quail out there but Woodcock with a chance at a rabbit.  I've heard there is a pretty good flight of Woodcock around Badin Lake every Jan but I'm trying to get more info on directions and the actual defination of "Pretty Good".

Cory I'm sorry to say I aint real tech savy, so no pics. this is the 3rd deer this year with my new to me boyles t/d and the 1st with a treeshark all I can say is OMG! It was a good hit from about 9yds and the trail was unlike any I've ever seen. I never had to bend down to inspect anything, just a walkin track to the swamp and there he laid, pretty as you please 100yds from the shot. I shoot "heavy" gear 68lbs recurve and about a 700gr arra. those treesharks are MEAN with that setup.

Deer have virtually quit moving during daylight around where I hunt. Gun hunters have'em spooked into night movement I guess. I haven't seen any the last two times out but after dark they're in my parent's back yard just hours after I leave the stand about 50 yards away. I spooked 3-4 the other morning walking to the stand just after 5:30am, but nothing the rest of the day to be seen except squirrels.

I went back to the club this morning only to tote corn, those deer are eatin me outa house and home! I'm up to 150 lbs twice a week now.Anyhow I took my duaghter Bailey with me she wanted to see where I shot the deer. Just for kicks I started her on the bloodtrail and to my disbelief she followed it right to where I found the deer last night. I think every 7 year old girl outta know how to blood track right? lol Bernies gonna post the pics I took, to tell the truth the camera we have ain't hittin on much and the pics dont do justice to the trail. in places sprayed 8-10 feet from the deers true path. Think simmons wants to use bailey as an spokesgirl lol......"bloodtrails so good your 7 year old duaghter can follow them" LOL  :biglaugh:

Merry Christmas NCers. Looks like many of us will see snow. I hope to be in the stand today by 2pm. And maybe again in the early morn if'n I get skunked again this afternoon. (I've tried to be good Santa...)

Whatever you do today or tomorrow, enjoy the scenery and be safe in your travels.

Bud.

That's good advice, Bud B.

Well nc r's pics came in last night (along with Santa, I guess - LOL) and I've uploaded them to PhotoBucket  - so it is now my pleasure to post them for our perussal and pleasure - Thanks, nc r. One of the pics only half of came through - it is apparently of a tree that got "blood spattered" big time. I am posting it also (in it's half-form) and if they can resend that one, I'll exchange it here in the thread later.

Oh I forgot the pic with bailey pointing to the ground, well I am fasinted by the forensic sciences and bailey has to endure countless sceince shows on the subject. LOL well Bailey was on the trail and says, "Dad I remember the tails of the blood drops points the direction the deer run". WOW I dont think I learned that little trick till I was 19 or 20! smart kid.....she got that from momma LOL

The pic of the tree came through and some of the deer so I've added them to my original post, so go back and eyeball the pics again. (BTW Your welcome Cleve, and it's still really my pleasure.)

Also this one of Bailey's take on the "Job Well Done" came through - I love it!:

They never got closer and I never saw anything else. Even the squirrels were laid up today.

I still think the season is "THROUGH" Jan First, Ruddy, as it says in the regs,  which would mean it wouldn't end until a half hour after sundown on the first, Sat. this year - (and so do a lot of other NC folks from what I've heard and seen). That doesn't mean I'm right but no one has shown me proof to the contrary yet and a lot of folks I know hunt on Jan 1 every year. I can't with this cold but, if you want another day to hunt, I'd call a Game Warden and ask, if I was you.

Saturday is the last - hoping Ruddy smoked one this day!
Title: Re: NC hunters?
Post by: broketooth on December 31, 2010, 08:52:00 PM
nope the only thing i smoked today was a cigarette. don graciously invited me to come hunt with him at one of his favorite spots. i helped him pull some of his stands so he can perform maintainance during the off season. got in the stand a little after 2 and got out a little after 5. there was one rule that had to be followed. its not a shooter if its less than an 8 point. at 4 pm a 4 point and a spike stepped in to the area to feed on acorns and browse . i watched them for an hr. both were less than 10 yrds the whole time. so i became very observant without spooking them until they eased on off to a southeast direction. the 4 point was very watchful, he looked 3 times, to which i would slowly turn my head to look another direction. the spike wasnt as watchful. he was also sportin the prettiest chocolate brown coat ive ever seen on a deer. i was really taken by that. for an hour they circled my tree stand and eased off. i can see how don has learned to be very patient. i was very excited and happy to be there. thanks for inviting me don. its a great spread to hunt. no pics this time fellas. maybe tomorrow 1 day to go we shall see. ruddy

Had about five under and around the stand about 30 mintues before you could see this morning. As soon as the sky started lighting up it was like someone turned off a switch. The deer slipped out without hardly making a sound. Kinda creepy actually. It's like they vanished. Only saw one squirrel all day.

Hope you all had better luck than me.

Is it Deer season yet?    :D

Oh sure, now that the season is over, I begin to feel better (still feel like a you-know-what that's been poked with a stick but I can tell it is on the run and I should begin to feel/sound more like normal any day now).

Time to start planning for next season (I sure hope they get the roads fixed in the local part of the National forest).
