I see them on some risers and was wondering the pros and cons?
-
don't like them,,,, I even tried them with my own finger pattern and still didn't like them--> it constricts me to that one grip position but where I shoot different positions where my hand on the bow changes a bit or wear gloves it does't feel right to me..
-
I like it. my dalaa has them. I never notice them unless im gripping the bow wrong. that is the point right? :)
-
Don't like them myself but each to their own.
-
Personal preference thing just like so many other things related to trad shooting. Only you will know if it's right for you. you'll have to shoot one with the grooves to see if you like them.
-
Don't like them, I prefer a small thumb rest though. Really gives positive hand placement.
-
I hate a thumb rest, cut mine off my Mikuta. Finger grooves I kind'a like, my Zipper and my Morrison both have them and that gives me a positive feel. It's a personal thing I guess!
-
I have a Cascade Golden Hawk Mag with a single notch for the index finger along the front outside corner of the riser. It really seems to help with consistant hand placement. I'm not a fan of a full set of finger grooves on the back, though.

Thanks for the replies!

It depends on how you grip your bow, it doesnt matter to people with relaxed bowhands as they dont grip the bow that much for the grooves to be felt.Others have a firm grip on the bow so finger notches provide a reference point for them. I myself shoot olympic style recurves so my bow hand is very relaxed, i really have to close my hands a little just so that the bow wont fall from my hand.If I hold my trad bows like i do in olympic style recurve,I need a sling to catch the bow after my shot.
-
I like the way they look. But I don't use them as I hold my bow with three fingers curled.
-
I always wondered, what would happen if you needed to change your grip if you had gloves on. Better than a square back, I think I would just prefer rounded.
-
Not a big fan of them
-
I like them
-
My fingers don't touch the back of the bow anyway, 'cept for the thumb and pointer.

I don't like them. They never feel natural or comfortable to me. I like to be able to move my fingers I guess. Grooves distract me and I want to focus on the target - not my bow hand. Can't totally explain it but I strongly dislike the ones I've tried - to the point that I would consider it a deal breaker on a bow.
-
Strictly a personal preference.
I do not like them.
-
I agree it is a preference. I think that you have them made when you shoot one way. What if you change your form and the grooves feel off? Just a thought before you break the grinder out:)
-
Strickly personal preference. I like straight grips on Hill LB's. Locators front or back bother me.
-
Don't really like them for all the reasons already posted.
-
no way.
-
Nope.
-
My hybrid has them on it and I like it for when I'm carrying the bow still hunting. And such. I shoot with a semi open grip. No preference here.

I shoot with only my thumb and index finger touching with a horizontal hand, so my fingers never grip the bow. But I will take finger grooves EVERY time. Cuz they look awesome!
ABSOLUTELY personal preference. You've gotta shoot both and see.
-
My last recurve I built has the finger groves and it does look real nice but I don't grip my bow so it really is not that important other than more work and a cool look. My other bows all have 2 groves on the opposite side of the grip as I usually shoot with 2 fingers curled under much like Asbel does. The groves give me a natural cant every time and keeps me from griping tightly on the bow and causing torque. I find my groups really change when I don't use this method so the finger groves on my last bow are not used when I shoot except for the top 2. Just my personal opinion but works for me.

These are the grips for the curled finger style I use

try this again?

Generally I'm not attracted to them and have no bow with them. To be honest, I've never even held a bow with them so I should reserve judgement. However, I would think it very unlikely a bow with finger grooves would fit the grip I use. If it didn't it wouldn't work for me at all.
-
Now, if a bowyer had a "form" for his riser that someone like me could grip and mark, it might be cool to have the grip made with some slight (non-torque inducing) indents to help me to set the bow hand consistently.
By the way, the more important reference for my hand and the grip is where the lifeline of my bowhand is placed on the grip. I'm thinking about taping a small diameter string in this spot (vertical) to set my lifeline on it the same way every shot.
-
I don't like them and don't need them.
-
I like them. I have 2 Zipper recurve and one on order. I notice not having them on other bows, I don't notice the one's on the Zipper while shooting. I like the thumb groove on my Stalker too.
-
I build bows both ways. Seems to be a tossup as to how many people like them and how many don't A lot of how they feel is how well they are done. god bless you all, Steve
-
Seems like a toss up! Chortdraw, thanks for the photos of the riser never seen one like that before.

My Zipper standard recurve with finger grooves helped me kill quite a few animals. I've never shot a bow and I've shot hundreds- as well as I do that Zipper...Bob built it for me in 1988 I think..
I retired it this past year and now shoot a Centaur I bought from someone else...you guessed it- with finger grooves. I shoot it lights out when I have time to practice....I grew up with recurves...high grip, finger grooves and straight wrist give me the most consistent hand placement and follow through on release...
Those are what I need for consistency.
Other people need other things....
