After many years of Hunting as much as possible, with work and family taking priority, I scored early in the season on what maybe a "once in a lifetime" bull for this hunter. I cant remember the last year I hunted opening weekend but two years ago I found a isolated wallow and this year I took the weekend off from work so I could be sitting there at first light. Well Saturday was a long day and although I heard a few bugles far away I didnt see an Elk. Getting back to camp that night my friend had better news to report. He had Elk all over him far and near. We decided to hunt two different water sources on Sunday morning in that same area. Once again, hiking over an hour in the dark I was at a wallow by first light. Bugles above me by 2 diferent bulls sounded promising. After 1 hour or so and maybe 20 bugles the bull directly above me sounded as though he might be moving off. I cow called just 2 soft mews not knowing if he could even hear them. He did not scream back. 5 minutes later he screamed and was obviously about half the distance he had been the last hour. Very shortly after I could hear his horns and hooves making a racket as he came in hard and fast straight down the steep north facing timbered slope. And then there he was, tipping his head side to side to maneuver around tree branches, maybe 80 yards away. It looked like he was gonna sidehill to the far end of the water/ mud complex which would put him out of range but then he swung onto one of many criss-crossing Elk trails and descended down to the water directly in front of me 18-20 yards. I was on my knees and had a 20 inch pine tree out in front of me, blowdown behind and to my right side. All I could see of the bull was his front hooves in the water and his head and brow tines. His big right eyeball appeared to be looking at me so I did not move. While he sucked in what must have been over 5 gallons of water I waited, trying to keep it together. Taking a break from drinking he looked back up the hill he had come down and I took the opportunity to lean out around the tree and look at more of his body. I was surprised to see his body was broadside because previously contemplating his body position, judging only from his two front hooves and facial angle I had thought he was hard quartering toward me. Turned out he was turning his head to drink and was actually in a great shooting position for me. So then I rocked back to rest again on my heels and he turns back and begins to drink again. After another long drink he lifted his head again, muzzle dripping, and looked again back up the hill and away from me. I leaned out again to visually clear the big tree 8 feet in front of me and locked on to my aim point as I drew the bow. His flank was absolutely huge as I struggled to narrow my focus to one small point. As I reached full draw the bull was swinging his head around to focus on me when I let the Grizzly tipped shaft go. I'm sure he had a little time to jump the string but I thought I still got him good.
After a failed attempt to locate my buddy I returned to my little "hide" and tried to read my book and enjoy a little Skoal. When 2 hours had elapsed I took up the trai. After 10 yards I found first blood and then 50 yards later I lost the blood trail. Taking one trail I walked 10 yards out looking for blood when I looked up and could clearly see a big Elk 100 yard away through thick timber. It was meant to be. My wait was over. I had finally achieved my long awaited public land big bull dreams. My bull of a lifetime was down. I took my time walking up to him and at one point after studying his motionless form with binoculars, fell to my knees with relief and thankfulness. I took pictures and quartered and bagged the meat by myelf (not a ton of fun). This animal was so huge I couldnt roll him over until I had removed the meat from one side of him and cut off his head/horns. Still I struggled to get him over (didnt help he had drank so much water before the shot) :help:
With my Blacks Creek Canadian pack I was able to haul out the first quarter, and everything in my daypack, 2 slow/hard hours back to the trailhead. Driving down the road I ran into my friend coming up the other way to check and see if my vehicle was still there. We pulled up window to window and he said, glancing at my bow in the passenger seat, that "I wasn't missing any arrows". Well it was my pleaure to correct him and show him the slightly shortened blooded shaft that had missed his detection.
2 hours later I had arranged for Grandma to watch my children the next day and we located another buddy willing to make the drive down and take a quarter out on Labor Day. This meant we only had to go in once more for the rest of the meat. It also meant the party could begin at the closest Saloon and then later at the big fire at our campsite. What a deal..... :archer: :archer:

Doesn't get much better than what you described! Congrats!
Fine bull and nice story with pics. A bull elk with my longbow is one of my dreams.
Thanks everyone for the nice comments.
The bow I was using was designed and built by myself this past spring. It is the first off the form. Maple and Rosewood I-beam riser with maple limb lams and black glass. I have "snake skin" spandex socks on the limbs (first year mess'n with them). It pulls 55@27". Arrow is the Cabelas Stalker Extreme with 160 gn Grizzly head with 100 gn steel adapter and 50 gn brass insert.
I have some friends that demanded to be allowed to measure this bull. I fought them tooth and nail of course because I dont care about such trivial things  :bigsmyl:
Anyone want to guess his green score???
Could be fun....I've has some folks guess within 3 inches already. Amazing as I can never tell a bull within 10-20 inches if its a big'un.
Of course I'll be a little better now that I have one to compare others to.
:archer:
Thanks for sharing! Those pics and your story were better than three cups of coffee...I'm very awake now!

That's so cool!! Great story and you should be proud.
My jaw just hit my desk!! BEAUTIFUL pics in the woods. Nicely done.
Ok this thread has slipped to page 3 while I have been gone for a few days so I wanted to thank everyone again for taking the time to slap me on the back. I wish everyone the kind of luck I experienced to get on this bull.
Some post kill notes. 8 days after killing this bull my partner was apporached within 13 yards by a very, very dominant agitated Boar Grizzly. My friend was sitting the same wallow and the bear apparently was still on the kill. Also, that day 2 black bears were observed in/around the kill/wallow area. About the same time 20 miles away a hunter was mauled severely by a Grizz. These animals are way more common these days than any official person will admit and many of them have no fear of us. They need to fear us!!!! We need to manage these bully's instead of turning a blind eye and looking the other way everytime someone is killed and/or scarred for life. IMO.
Kind of takes the fun out of the whole hiking in the dark thing.
I'm crapping my pants just thinking about it!
I have tried to cut/paste this to the "Highlights" page. No luck. The text went over but the pics didnt. Looks like "crapolla" over there.
Does anyone know how to do this?
PM me please with computer help. :banghead:

UNBELIEVE-A-BULL !!!!!!!

I have to disagree with you a little here though. IMO, based on watching/hunting/working around griz in MT and AK, you will never instill enough "fear" into every griz to keep them all from defending gut piles/kills. Sure, some bears have more submissive personalities while others are more agressive, but still, defending a food source is a highly evolved and very important survival skill for them! I don't think it would be possible to hunt the "aggressive trait" into extinction without hunting the entire species to the same end. I think that all the evidence points this way... there are still "aggressive" bears in AK and Canada, even in heavily hunted areas.
With griz around, there will always be a risk to hunters, bowhunters in particular. It is a risk that I am personally willing to accept, along with the risk of hypothermia, falling off steep rocks, getting shot by a rifle hunter, falling on a broadhead, dying in a car or plane wreck on my way to go hunting, etc. etc.
I was out hunting blacktails yesterday and I saw three black bears and one HUGE coastal grizzly, all from less than 100 yards. I made a lot of noise on my way in in the dark (up a salmon-filled creek) and I was glad I did when I saw that big brownie on the same creek on my way out.
One of the black bears clacked his jaws at me after I jumped him out of a berry patch at 20 yards. He took one step my way, but I yelled at him in my "bad dog" voice and he reconsidered.
That brown bear's head is the size of my torso. He is in a heavily hunted area and he was 200 yards from the road. He has coexisted with people and evaded hunters for many years, but I still wouldn't want to startle him, particularly if he was feeding on a moose carcass.
But what can you do? I guess I figure the best approach is to always be as alert as possible while in bear habitat, to learn as much as I can about bear behavior, to take note of where bears are hanging out and when they are there, and to put hunting on hold and make LOTS of noise when necessary, like while hiking along a salmon spawning area in the dark. The more experience I gain with this, the more I realize it has to be LOTS of noise, just casual conversation doesn't do it. Whistling is worthless, I haven't found that bears pay any attention to whistling. I sometimes carry a small air horn while doing salmon escapement counts for work.
Hunters have dealt with this risk for thousands and thousands of years. I believe it is part of the wilderness experience.
Sorry for blogging here on your bull post, but you brought up a topic that I'm strongly opinionated on. Again, CONGRATULATONS, that's a great elk!
Very Nice Bull...ConGrats and just glad I wasn't there to have to help pack all that meat out...

Man oh man! :clapper:
great story and bull!
I just enjoyed it all: the story, the pictures, the bull, and the thrill one feels with someone else's successful hunt. Good job!
ONCE MORE,JOB WELL DONE,,,,AWESOME
Outstanding bull and you told a great story. The pictures are great. That bull is the trophy of a lifetime and you earned it! What are the specs on your your bow, arrows and broadhead?
Found your specs on page 3. Nice setup, a lot of FOC and you put the arrow right where it needed to be.
I am jumping on the bandwagon way late but it has to be said...HOLY SMOKES! That bull is unreal! Way to get it done. :notworthy: :notworthy:
Awesome Trophy!!!
Well I was pleasantly surprised to see someone brought this thread back up.
Yes tradshooter you are right...lots of FOC.
One of the disadvantages of spending three weeks in the mountains like I did last year is that I missed out on a lot of great threads like this one. I don't think I saw this before today. But on the plus side it sure is cool to see it now!
Absolutely a stunning animal Randy - congratulations!!! You sure give us something to dream about as we wait for the tag drawings this spring!!
I also missed this thread I hunted Elk the hardest I ever had last year I came close but no elk. This thread has put the rush back into me hurry up Sept. That is awesome Bull CONGRATULATION!!
great story, thank you for sharing.
Heck I missed this one also, as I was out chasing them at the same time. What a great story and elk. Well done!
Trax and Randy,
Not sure you guys are really on opposite sides of the coin, but that is only guessing from what was posted and how I read it.
I think there is wisdom in wanting "better management" than the "oh, poor fuzzy bears" attitude that has seeped into even Western game management by a very vocal minority.
I think Trax also makes good points, but I don't see the two views (asperceived by me)as actually opposing viewpoints. Both are viable in the same situation. FWIW.
Randy,
The animal is an incredible dream come true, but to have the chance to DO what you did in the country you were in, and do it all on your own, is at least as awe-inspiring to me as the bull itself!
Lived in MT for 6 yrs...and never felt like I could take a deep enough breath to drink in all that my eyes saw and memory tries to relive.
Congrats on you. The entire experience is what many of us dream about into our aged years. To have done it must be something that will take years to become totally REAL, even to you!
 :notworthy:
Good job, congrats..♠ :campfire: :archer2:

The story is even better the second time around, especially in January! Thanks for pulling that one up Randy - you must be getting the fever too!

Beautiful Bull and great story. Love the pics Congrats!!!!!!
Nice one!
This won't make September come any sooner. Thanks for bringing this thread back up.
Hey Randy...thanks for bringing this back up. I was just reading one of your old Elk kill threads. Like I said in my short story..."What a deal".
Someone asked where this went down. A little ol'drainage we refer to as Notellum Crick.
;)
Notellum Crick is located in SW Montana to be more (just a little) specific.
I wonder how many people will Google Map Notellum Crick now? :) :)
Just as good the second time and an amazing bull indeed. Great work.
Hard earned, well told. Thats a true "Mr. Nasty" right there.
That's an awesome bull! I like the mass and the symmetry. I did notice that it looks like you broke your arrow.... Sorry Man..... It's a tough sport!
I've copied 3 pics from this site to my computer, this is 1 of em
Re-read, again. What a great story and great elk Randy!
