Title: cheap target idea!
Post by: jim phenes on September 10, 2010, 12:27:00 AM
not sure how many of you guys burn pellets for heat but if you do I have taken the empty bags and stuffed as many as i can untill i cant put any more emptys into the one i have open then i wrap the top with duct tape draw a spot with black marker or just paint a spot on it, it will last thousands of shots and its free! the only draw back with this idea is broad heads dont pull out you have to push them through the back but they push very easy.

Good idea.

I did similar with larger cardboard boxes. Broke down other boxes & laid them flat inside the bigger box. Once full you have 2-4' of tightly packed cardboard to shoot into lengthwise. Last longer that way. Anybody else?

I'm always looking for cheap target ideas!  Thanks for the info.

Not sure what the material is called, but I found some large bags made out of a plastic woven burlap type material.  I went to a local plastic bag manufacturer and bought a case of plastic grocery sacks, stuffed as many as possible into the large plastic bag and sewed the top shut with string.  Works great, stops field points right now, and easy to remove arrows.  When the outer bag wears out, just transfer the inner stuffing into another one and you are ready to go.

Burlap dog bed from Wal-Mart.  Has a zipper on one end.  Stuff with plastic grocery bags.  Excellent for field points.

There is a yuppy coffee house here were I live were they roast there own beans.  They get all of there beans in burlap bags and are kind enough to give the bags to me.  Well I guess they cost me 2.75 because I always get a cup of their coffee when I am in there.

My cousin gives me the bags that his pheasant feed comes in, looks a lot like plastic burlap. I stuff them with shrink wrap from work. Free and works great.

When I was in college, I used a mesh laundry bag that came with with the draw string on the top and the cheap PVC frame to hold the laundry bag.

I think you can still get these at Walmart. I would then go to the nearest loading dock somewhere and ask the Doc Foreman if I could have the plastic wrap that they cut off the pallets. (always a big pile of it every night and day being thrown out)

I was never denied when I told them what I wanted it for.

Works great! Once the laundry bag is stuffed full you zip tie (if needed) it to the PVC frame. The frames usually have wheels and are great for indoor targets because you can wheel it out of the way when done.

I use feed bag targets around my property but one word of caution.  If sunlight hits them they will disintegrate quickly.
