Title: amazing penetration
Post by: jim phenes on September 04, 2010, 09:29:00 AM
just thoughtt i would tell everyone about my accidental 3/4 inch plywood story. I was shooting at my target i had fixed on my round bail the other day at 23 yds, well i hadnt taken my ply wood backing down for my 22 cal paper targets that was standing next to the bail, i pulled the shot by accident and hit the wood to my amazement when i went to try to pull the arrow it was no problem it had almost went the whole way through the ply wood, i was shooting my bear montana 60 lb at 28" with a zwickey broad head. I knew these bows had alot of kinetic energy but had no idea they packed that much of a punch!

It's supprising how much power a Stick & String combination actually has with the proper set up for the archer.

Not Traditional related but when I help a friend with Hunters Education I present the Archery portion & since one of the primary drills we try to get to the students is BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET & BEYOND well I shot a Stainless Steel Canteen Cup from 40 yards away with my then hunting compound bow & the G5 Montec penetrated both sides with 18" of shaft on the opesite side & I would persent it in that condition to the students to show that within most common Hunting yardages the shot you make could be shared by another if you did not pay attention.

Looks like you have plenty of oomph to take on a Elk when you have the chance.

Good hunting.

Too bad most folks don't know how GA got its 1st statewide bowhunting season....

Had to do with one GA mayor and his deer rifle's bullet stopping in a sand bag, and Dan Quilian's longbow shot arrow blowing through it.

Its not just 'KE'....but Momentum as well.

Terry, I read that story somewhere once. He did that at a county fair if I remember right!

I thought that was fred bear that would shoot a throught the sand bag with glass on the back side to show the arrow passing through and breaking the glass.  it was in Dick L's book Papa Bear.

I think that story was in "Traditional Bowhunter" magazine. They did a story on Dan shortly after he passed away, right? I can dig the issue out when I get a chance, unless someone else can chime in on this one.

When I taught shooting sports for 4-H I'd take a 5 gallon bucket of sand and shoot a 30.06 into it and let the kids dig through it afterward and retrieve the bullet.

Impressive!! You betcha but them I take a bow (wheeled) back then and blow through a different bucket filled just like the 1st bucket.

Now they were really impressed!!

I wish I had been shooting traditional back then. I'm solid sure that almost any of my bows today could repeat that performance.

God bless,Mudd

While you guys are talking bout penetration care to relate some specifics on best combinations you've found? What grain tips, FOC, wood as opposed to carbon?
