Title: flemish string length before twisting
Post by: Wingbow on September 02, 2010, 11:49:00 PM
Hope this is in the right forum.  searched and couldn't find an answer.  What should the total length of a flemish sting be before twisting and looping?  Example: 66in recurve, 66-3 or 4= 62 to 63in, 62in + 10in= 72in on shortest strand before twisting

This is the formula I use: AMO bow length - 3 (longbow) or - 4 (recurve) + 18 (for loops) + 4 (Darren's fudge factor for really round strings)

Hope this helps.

When I make a string, I measure the length of the string I will need, add 16" to it, and drive two nails into a wall at that distance. That's the length of the string you start with, and after adding the twists and loops, you will wind up with a string of the correct length.

Hope that was what you were asking.

Thank you both for the input. I built the jig in the how-to section and the string came up a little short.  I just wanted something to compare. Again thanks.

Going by bow length is a shot in the dark.  FWIW (not a lot), AMO/ATA says 3" shorter, longbow or recurve.

Measure an existing string, add 16" or so and you have the bundle length.  Everyone twists a little differently, so what works for one might be a tad off for another.

When you make a string, take notes.  After I make the first loop, I measure to find the starting point for my second--the string part, not the end.  If you take notes, you will know about how much to adjust if you miss it the first time.
