Title: Prairie Traditions Headed West
Post by: Whip on September 02, 2010, 07:51:00 AM
Next Friday morning (Sept. 10) I will point the truck westward and head toward Wyoming to chase elk for the rest of the month.

While I am gone my goodwife Irene will be able to help with pack orders, etc.  I will also check email and phone messages from time to time as I get within cell phone range, but response might be a bit slower than usual.    ;)    But I will get back to you when I can.

If there is anything you need before I leave please let me know.

Whip,
Prayers sent from TN that you have a safe, enjoyable, and PRODUCTIVE trip ! Remember, when packing the select pieces of young, tender, cow elk backstrappage to write, " Nocams Only " on the freezer paper. These will be carefully packed for the Compton trip in June. May your arrows fly true and good luck brother !!! Please send us updates from time to time when you get computer access. Love your pics and stories.

Good luck Joe......though something tells me Mr. Golden Horseshoe needs none!

Love the X2.  Got it fully packed out with the spike duffel and may hike the local bridge for some mountain simulation this weekend.

Joe,

Have safe travels, a safe hunt and may your arrows fly straight and true to the intended point of aim.  What bow, or bows, will you be carrying with you for the hunt?

Bill

I'm hoping to disappoint you Jimmy.  I'm thinking more along the lines of serving chili next year from a gnarly old bull   :readit:      :D

Charlie, we will be in the northern Bighorns west of Sheridan.  Good country for sure!

Bill, I think there are a couple of bows that will see time walking around the mountains this year.  #1 is my RER LX, 55#@29 which has been so good to me.  Also will have a 1968 Bear Super Kodiak that I have grown very fond of lately.  It is 56#@29, and I can shoot both bows interchangably with no difference at all.  I've really gotten hooked on the old Bears since I started working on them.

In case everyone does not know...... I had never met Whip until Compton this year, but had heard nothing but good things about him from DW and Skyler. Yes, they were all true ! Normally don't take up to well with Yanks but Whip and the wifey are about the nicest folks I have met in a while, haha ! The first day at Compton Skyler introduced Mason and I to Whip and his wife at their booth.

On Sat night at Compton we found our way to Whip's camp to hang out with Whip, his wife, Fletcher, 4Runr,Raginbull and wife and Shaun. Me, Mason, and Skyler were trying to head back to our hotel but they just would not let us leave and kept feeding us off the fire. I have to admit I had serious doubts about Whip's cooking skills as I watched him throw a cow elk roast on the campfire grill whole, very little seasoning..... We had never had elk and always wanted it. I was thinking, " I finally have a chance to try prime elk and Whip is going to turn this into a dried up piece of leather ? "

Boy, did I ever eat this thoughts and some of the best elk on the planet ! After he crusted the whole roast on the first side he sliced it into steak size slices and rolled them onto their sides. A few more minutes and pulled them off still med rare. Got to really taste what elk tastes like due to them not being covered up with seasoning or marinade. I think I would eat shoes if Whip is doing the cookin ! Good luck in Wyoming my friend !

Only one tag in my pocket Jimmy.  It is for either sex, but I don't know.  Hate to make promisses on a public forum of what I will or won't shoot.  But I've been having these recurring dreams of a bull with antlers so big I can't get my hands around them

Okay Whip, elk tacos it is bud !  :scared:

Been a while since a decent sized buck had been killed around our house and Mason got a great 8 point last year that was all rutted up. I knew when I dropped him off at the processor not to cut any steaks, tenderloins and burger only. After eating sweet 1.5 yr old does 90% of the time , trust me you can taste a 3.5 yr old rutty buck ! Needless to say we been eating a lot of deer tacos and finally got him gone. We are now back into the last doe and if all goes well the freezer will be at zero deer stock by Sept 25th.

I hope you get one so big you gotta get the Heli Loggers to get him out with the twin rotor chopper ! Hope it is the last day too so we get to experience a whole month of your adventures. Good luck my friend and a safe trip too !
