Title: Hog Hunting Near Sumter, SC??
Post by: Cmalone1 on September 01, 2010, 10:24:00 PM
Moving to Sumter beginning of October and I know SC has some hogs so I'm REALLY excited about moving!! I have been looking at some areas around there to see what's available...

Have been looking at manchester state forest but didn't know how many acres was there or if it held pigs...Any public land that people know of that holds some hogs I would really appreciate it!!

Thanks,
Coty

I lived in South Carolina for 41 years and I am going back soon I hope. I was born there and moved away what was I thinking. Anyway when you get to Sumter check out the local mom and pop stores where you see the older guys hanging out all day. You will be near Manning and Santee both have great hunting and fishing. Orangeburg is near also and has great hunting and fishing. You will be in a good spot check out the local spots you will be amazed how many people will let you hunt their land. Good luck.

I was stationed at Shaw AFB from 88-91.  Use to hunt Manchester state forrest.  While hunting one day somebody busted out the window in my vehicle and tried to steal the radio.  Made a real mess and still didn't get the radio.  So make sure to lock up to slow them down a bit.

I also hunted at the Army post in Columbia.  The only private land I had was a few peanut fields owned by another AF member.

I was told there were hogs at the Army post & I saw hogs while floating the Saluda river.  At least I think that's what the river was called, many moons ago.

Manchester state forest is 23,135 acres.  There are pretty much hogs all over the state now.

Do you think that It would be worth hunting there beetle? and also does SC allow baiting? Couldn't find anything in the regs about it...

Unless they have changed the law no game in S.C. can be baited. Turkeys and ducks allow decoys. Pac you are right it is the Saluda river and Edisto river both run in that area, the Ashley river is a little more south east.

You can bait all you want to on private land but not public land here in SC.

The State is divided into game zones. You can bait on private land in the lower half of the state. You can not bait on public land anywhere in the State. You can not bait in the upstate at all. Clear as mud????

Benjy

I've been thinking about checking out Manchester State Forest. It's on my list of things to do.

Coty, you should come to our Bowhunters of SC trad shoot 3rd weekend in Febuary at Rocks Pond Campground At Santee Cooper near Eutawville. You can meet a lot of guys there that might can help you out. The nearest public land to me is Pee Dee heritage preseve in Darlington county. I would be glad to mail you a regulations booklet if you give me your address.

Coty, If you do go to the shoot at Rocks pond there is good BBQ and there used to be a steak house where you pick out and cook your own steak in the Eutawville area.
