Going to Northern Idaho for a black bear hunt on Thursday! I'm stoked!
I'll be with Weitas creek outfitters. Sounds like the weather is going to be awesome. 40's at night and 80's during the day.
This is my 1st fly away hunt.
Good luck and have a safe hunt!
Magnus
Go Get 'Em Jim!
That's exciting.Good luck and take a lot of pictures.
Beautifull country and a great outfitter!!!
You picked a good one for your first fly away hunt.. Good luck and post some pic's when you get back!!
Good luck. Bear hunting has been on my to-do list for a long time.
Hey Jim, I think Idaho is the gem state isn't it? While you are on the prowl for black bear up there be sure to pick up some of that nice obsidian. With your skills that shiny black rock will make an awesome point! Good luck with the bear hunt, that 40s at night sure sounds good.
:archer:
Lucky for you...I've got another 12 days!
Just got a new camera so I'll be taking pics like crazy. Won't be able to post any till I get back though.
I think I'll take some flint knapping tools and some preforms to kill some time during the day.
I was going to take a selfbow and some stone heads but I'm going to just stick with my TD BW. Too much hassle to fly with. Maybe next time.
I'll be using 160 gr Snuffers on carbon shafts.
Good luck. Shoot straight, pick a spot and watch him fall.
Best of luck to you......Randy
Best of luck to you! Make sure you get a lot of pictures. :)
Good luck to ya  And have fun.
Good luck.Let us know how it is gone.
Good luck

Well... it is done. What an amazing hunt. Don't have much time or a way to post pics but I will upon my arrival. I would do it again in a second!
7 hours and counting.........

Alas, no bear for me but had bears in almost every time I sat. I made some poor shots and some poor shot placement. Both bears I shot at will recover but will be much wiser. I'll post later about each event.

Absolutely awesome slide show!!
I can't thank you enough for sharing it!
I know there was at least one "tank" in those photos, a bruiser of a bruin.
Thank you again!

This guy knew there was a bigger bear nearby I think. The Outfitter Gary Haight said that was what they do when they get whooped at the bait. It is amazing that they can hear other bears coming as quet as they are.

Love the pics Jim! Love hunting bear!!
This was my 1st fly away hunt. We were picked up at the airport in Lewiston and started our way toward to mountains after a good nights sleep in Kamiah. That's where the fog pictures were taken.
Once in camp some two hours or so later, we went about getting moved in and our bows set up again. We had a roomy tent with a wood floor and a wood stove.
The camp has two functional out houses and a camp shower. Water is heated by the cook stove in the mess tent and used in the shower via gravity. Over all the camp was very comfortable and the food was incredible!
Gary, the outfitter assigned me the bait up the road from camp about a 1/4. I had bears in every night except the last.
I have so many incredible memories crammed into that week it is hard to remember what happened when.
I believe it was the third night that I was watching "boo boo" the yearling. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/keyman/trail%20cam%20and%20hunting/2010%20bear%20hunt/CIMG0172.jpg)
I was standing behind a large stump. I looked to my left and a biggerbear was coming in! There I was just standing out in the open. They can't see all that well so I just froze.
I looked toward the bait and Boo boo was gone. Subordinate bears have a sixth sense about them when it comes to bigger bears. It is amazing how stealthy they are. I got to where I used Booboo as a watch dog but he let me down on this occasion. The bigger bear came waddling in and started letting out a low grunt... "oouhh oouhh oouhhh". I looked at the bait and Booboo was gone.
I decided to try for this bear.
I've always heard of buck fever but never truely experienced it. I had become more relaxed being on the ground with the bears but when I decided to shoot this bear I got the shakes and i could actually hear my heartbeat in my ears.
I tried to calm myself and stepped out from behind my stump. The bait was 10-12ish yards away. I had a broadside shot but there was an 8" log laying three feet my side of the bear. The bear was laying down with his head in the bait hole. This left a narrow verticle window for me to shoot through. The bear was up and down checking for bigger bears.
I came to full draw at least 5-6 times. The bear would look up at me and I had to just hold where I was, 1/2 draw, 3/4. I was shaking like a dog passing peach seeds by now! How could that bear not see me?!?
It got to the point that I had to sink back behind that stump and take a break! I took deep breaths and tried to calm down. I've never felt this shook up before! I kept telling myself that it was only 10 yards and that I could do this!
I picked up my bow and stepped back out. The bear raised up and I picked my spot. I drew to anchor and released. The arrow flew perfectly...

A couple more pics until Jim gets back.
If you are gonna hunt from the ground you need to shoot from the ground.

Rick if you hadn't told me that was bear on the grill I would have sworn that meat cooking on there looks like leg quarters off of a chicken...lol
Great camp pictures!
I hope the same doesn't hold true for camps as workshop spaces.
Remember the old saying "A clean workbench is the sign of a sick mind!"
Your tent cabin is way too clean inside with everything in its place...lol
Thank you for sharing and trying to placate us until the rest of the kill story can be told.
God bless,Mudd
nice pics guys, makin me wish I was bear hunting.
Mudd -
Not big quarters but that would be one heck of a BIG chicken with quarters of that size :bigsmyl:
Perfectly that is, right into the log about 2" from the top!
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/keyman/trail%20cam%20and%20hunting/2010%20bear%20hunt/SUNP0021.jpg) Here you can see the arrow stuck in the log in a pic from my trail cam.
The bear jumped and trotted away about 10 feet. I was standing out in the open and the bear stared a hole through me as I tried to make like a tree. He finally started feeding again and I sunk back behind the stump and gathered my composure and another arrow.
At this point I was now a physical and mental wreck. You'd think I was shooting a huge pissed off grizzly or something! I got calmed down as much as I was going to and tried it again.
I repeated the same process of getting in position. The bear was even more figety now and I drew and let down several more times. I really should have passed on this shot but when I got an opening I let it fly. The arrow flight was bad from the begining. I think I may have caught some sleeve above my arm guard. That arrow fishtailed low and right. It must have glanced off his belly then took a chunk out of a log beneath him. He took off and made about a 30 yard circle and stood out in the brush looking at the bait. He sat down for a bit then came back into the bait and ate a bit more. He then stepped over the logs and calmly walked away.
I knew the shot was bad and prayed he hadn't taken it in the guts. After about 15 minutes I walked over and found one 1/4" spot of blood. I went back to my stump and sat down to replay the whole event.
After about 5 minutes of mentally bashing my brains out I looked out to my front and saw this odd black spot between two trees about 50 yards out. I caught movement and knew it was another bear.
Sounds like you were in the heat of it all!! Keep the story coming. :campfire:
See what I mean Rick!...lol Just another of my mistakes in 2010..lol
I have a feeling there's more to come?? So far my heart goes out to you Jim.
I'm willing you success... for what it's worth.
Thanks again for sharing with us.
God bless,Mudd
I watched that bear skirt around me checking things out. He was super nervous. It was getting dark and I didn't want to get pinned down at the bait with him feeding. I made that mistake earlier in the week and had to just stand up and walk out scaring the bear off. I found out later that I should have thrown some sticks opposite of where I wanted the bear to run so it wouldn't see me walk out.
This nights bear never did come in and and I'm glad. I'm sure I couldn't shoot a decent shot at this point. I quietly snuck out after he left.
I walked back to camp bummed about my "two" shots but glad to see the bear was had only a flesh wound. Hunting bear on the ground is one of the biggest rushes I've ever had.
When I got back I was still wound up like an 8 day clock! I think everyone got a kick out of my story and how excited I was. I think this was the same evening that Rick got his bear.
The next evening I had a much bigger bear come in. I saw him stalking around the bait very cautiously as he had the night before. It took him a while but he finally came in and offered me a shot. I had a military Gortex parka on. About half draw he heard it and bolted.
Shortly he came back in and I SLOWLY took the parka off behind my stump.
I got back into position and picked my spot. I was much calmer this time and had a lot bigger target. His front leg on my side was forward and I chose to put my shot right behind it. He was angling away from me slightly though. the arrow penetrated up to the nock right where I was looking. It was just too far forward. It exited from the center of his chest thus missing all the vitals.
He was the last bear I saw on this trip. I'd do it all over again in a second. Next time I'll be better informed and much more confident.
Thanks for looking.
Jim, sure sounds like you had a great time on those bear hunts. Great story telling too, it felt like I was there hiding behind a tree next to you watching Boo Boo and his big uncles. You saw some beautiful woods, got some shots, ate like kings, racked up some lasting memories, what a great trip, thanks for sharing it with us. Did you find and bring back any black, shiny rocks to knap on? :clapper:
If you've never been to Northern Idaho, you may maynot come back to OK! It's God's country that's for sure! Love those cool nights and early mornin'!!!

You sized up my whole trip in one paragraph except for the shiney rocks. Didn't see any Obsidian.
