I know, I know........sorry for all the questions about traditional wood arrows lately, but I honestly don't know squat about building my own cedar trad arrows. :confused:
I've built my own carbons and aluminums for 20+ years and the transition should be simple, but it's just not the same animal.
Here's my question:
My raw shafts measure .365 with calipers. That puts them slightly over 23/64ths, so would this be considered what guys are calling a 11/32 shaft??
What size nock do you all use for a shaft that measures .365 and what do you call it?
Could you suggest some quality nocks for my PO Cedar Shafts?
I want quality on a budget, if that's possible?
But, I don't want to waste my money by purchasing the wrong size, so I'm putting my faith in the "Gang" here to steer me in the right direction before I run out and buy the wrong nocks. :help:

No! 11/32" would be 22/64. Smaller not bigger.

The Bohning Classic is a very popular nock for good reason. It's better not to scrimp on cost when it comes to your arrow nocks... they are really cheap to begin with.
I'm with Charlie. Tried others but like the classic index. Good quality and affordable.

I too favor the Bohning and sometimes size depends on the string used. A 5/16 might fit a skinny string better.

I was kind of assuming that you would use a nock size slightly smaller than the actual shaft diameter, but it's always better to ask first.
When all we had available to us many years ago was glue on nocks, before the uni bushings hit the archery scene, we chose a nock that was smaller than our aluminum shafts to avoid nock contact with the arrow rest. But that was aluminum and with shooting off of a beaver hair rest I don't think it will be a problem.
One more question while I'm thinking about it.
Your tapers for points and nocks, are 11 degrees for nocks and 5 degrees for points....correct?
AMO standard is 11 1/2 degrees. If you buy a pencil sharpener type tapering tool, it may or may not be 11 1/2 degrees. Your shafts are 23/64, a standard size. Bohning does make 23/64 nocks, but I agree with Charlie, 11/32 will also work. I believe the throat size is the same regardless of the nock diameter. Regardless, once you decide on a size, stick with it. They're not the same thickness so a change in nock size does change the nocking point height ever so slightly. Good luck.

chuck the shafts into a drill, and run some 100 grit sandpaper thu them. It will bring you to 23/64ths and if you sand enough, you will have 11/32nds. It doesn't take much with cedar, so go at it easy. I prefer the classic index nocks. And I only use 11/32" nocks. Even if you have 23/64" shafts, if you lightly sand the nockend, the 11/32nds nocks will flow right into the shafts.

The classic nocks are the ones I've been looking at. I found a seller who will sell me 100 indexing classic nocks for $7 bucks plus actual shipping, can't beat that. I used these nocks years ago when I was building aluminum arrows and they are hard to beat, tried and true. Everybody says 11/32nds so that's what it will be.
Grapes- Funny you should mention using a drill? That's how I've been spining my shafts down is with a drill press. I turned the head of the drill press to hang over the edge of the bench like a vertical wood lathe. It goes much quicker than wearing my arm out scrubbing back and forth. :thumbsup:
