Maybe you would like to see more instruction, youth, 3d shooting. Give me some ideas. I am trying to put something together. Just need more ideas. Thanks for your time, Ed
Do a traditional 101 Ed. Show how to properly tune arrows with a couple of different methods. Explain what the different terminologies mean and show how to do things like changing brace height, adjusting nock point/tied on nocks, etc. A search to find what the most common questions asked here and in the shooters forum would give you a good reference on what's needed. A lot of new blood coming in and quite a few folks are better visual learners than written word learners.
I'd like to know see what the most stable positions to shoot are, when not standing straight. Best ways to properly kneel, squat, even lay down and still shoot. Marco
I'd like to some goomer with a wheelbarrow full of gadgets and gizmos look into the camera with a goofy look on his face and his arms and compound thingy held over his head like he just won the world heavyweight title saying "give me second folks" , "Dontcha love it when a plan comes together " or "I just smoked the XYZ buck "
:bigsmyl:
Oh wait a minute ......... thats 99.999% of the videos on TV !!!!! ............ LOL
Well besides myself with a huge buck I just harvested, I guess I like to see the set up, arrow flight and impact and the tracking job.
I guess I like to see info on how to be a better ground hunter. Also, just basic hunting stuff, not all the hype on the best camo etc. Scouting info and shooting info, then have it all come together on a filmed hunt.
trad hunting or instructional video?
Keep it coming fella's some great input!!!
How would feel about Bowyer interviews. I plan on doing this with out title sponsers, so include different bowyers. Maybe hunt and video some fellow TradGang members and get their take on set-up and hunting tactics. Be very educational and fun. Ed
My favorite already exists. "Traditional Archery by Tim Strickland". This guy is a 40-year archery veteran, still holds NFAA records, coached multiple Americans to Olympic medals, and has a traditional hunting show.
Tim Stickland is truely a Archery Legend. Very well versed in all archery. Ed
I'd LOVE to see a video of guys just having fun with their bows. Granted you are gonna have some basic instruction in there about set ups, safety, shooting tips..... But mostly just plain fun!
... mike ... :archer2: ...
* P.S. I know of a place were you would be welcome shooting some parts this video... I'll send you a PM about it.
The traditional video I'd buy next would be of folks hunting with this equipment. I know there are some of this out there and I need to start buying them.
Of course my favorite traditional video would feature sommeone who looked a lot like me with a very tired grin and straining to lift the head of a bow-killed Bighorn ram!
Follow some of the ol Fred Bear formats.
Show some woodsmanship, some critters, some nature. Try to get us to feel the scene and the moment, not just seconds before the big deer comes in.
Take a bit of Fred Anderson's Reflections video and expand. Maybe not quite the humor, but definately the serenity.
A bit of the videography of Primal Dreams.
Anyway, that's what Id like to see. Honestly. . I don't care if you even get anything on video.
ChuckC
I would like to see a video that really teaches me how to hunt and is realistic. Instructions on bow set up, gear set up, tree stand safety and placement, shot placement, lots of trailing instruction. and last but certainly not least. how to butcher, preserve and prepare the spoils.
It seems like a lot of people would learn from this type of video. I meant all we see are kill shots and recovery shots.
Just my two cents.
Caleb
I love over the shoulder camera angles so you can see the arrow released, flying and hitting the target.
I guess it would be hard to put everything in one DVD but I would like to see at least one hunt from start to finish. Start with scouting and end with grilling. :)
Maybe start with an ariel photo of the site. Then ground shots. Picking a spot for a ground blind or finding a natural one, etc.
Then the hunt (with over the shoulder angle), tracking, dressing, butchering and eating.
Here is why. Most videos are from up in a tree. One camera on the shooter and one on the deer (or whatever). You see the draw then cut to impact. You miss the best part... the flight of the arrow.
Also, a lot of guys show locations and talk about funnels and pinch points, etc, but they never really explain that "deer are bedding here and corn is over there... there's a cow fence that runs along this line and a stream here so we're going to setup in such and such a place". I think a lot of new hunters will appreciate the step by step and even guys who have done it a thousand times will like seeing more than just a deer walking in toward a tree stand and then running off after the shot.
Or maybe I just haven't watched the right DVDs.
I would add tips like others suggested. Setups, tuning, etc.
And fun hunts. Bowfishing, frogs, rabbits, hogs, geese, squirrels, predators... I think we've all seen enough deer hunts (except like I described above).
I would like to see Howard Hill and John Schulz out doing some rabbit hunting and stump shooting.
Camp life!!! No fancy 5 star lodges, although I do like em. Im talking back woods camps and showing the cameraderie and comings and goings of a real down to earth trad bowhunting camp and the hunts the way they happen from the camp in real life.
Definitely the flight of the arrow. Plus would like to see the different bows and set ups the hunters use and why they use the particular bow/set up.....Randy

Ed You are welcome in our new ADK camp. We can take turns filming and shooting.
You have a chance at Deer, Bears and small game. Not to mention a primitive shelter and a good crew of guys. Cooking over a campfire and telling stories.
That's the kind of stuff I like. Ground hogs, Frogs, Squirrels, Rabbits, all would make a nice change also.
Good Luck Ed!

I agree to camp life.
Selfbow, longbow, hyrbid, recurve, ILF. Different bowyers, different hunters. Ghillie hunt, stalking, stand hunt. Show the whole set-up from bow>arrow>broadhead>glove>etc. and maybe even some practice shots.
I would love to see a video on how to film your own hunts.
Great ideas guys, keep them coming. I definitly want to include both women and children. Thanks Ed
Ed you're getting some great input, let me know if there's any way I can help bud :archer:
Film a hunt at Ron LaClairs Shrewhaven, or someplace similiar to that.
I would like to see more info on gripping the bow and string, and how different variations in grip style of different bow types and finger to string pressure with release affect your tune. That is something I don't see covered in stuff I have watched so far, but I have not watched them all yet.
I would be interested in some slow motion video of shots off the bow and video of shots over the shoulder to show arrow flight and the effects of different changes to your bow, and string grip and release. Some showing what a good tune looks like including what changes do to the flight in slow motion so you can see what the arrow is doing.
I would also like to see something on tied in nock points or even served nock points.
Maybe something on BH sharpening a three blade and two blade with different methods. There is a lot of good stuff on hear about that, but those are important things I don't see in video.
Of course I need to see some stuff arrowed and tracked.
One big thing I don't see much of is the planning, scouting and strategy of the hunt. I know some shows that would be "we went to this game farm and set up on this feeder, or what ever, to shoot this big buck that has been hear everyday on the game camera..................." But, I figure some good honest hunts have some good old know how to scout and set-up based on topo, sign, and other things the way I hunt. I would like to see that.

x2...impact, animal reaction, tracking never gets old
Small game bowhunting, small game bowhunting, and more small game bowhunting...
I want thought put into it.
Most hunting shows start with the hunter already in the tree. I'd like to see why they picked that set up (scouting, funnels, food, etc).
Throw in some camp life, small game hunting, stump shooting, and basically having fun with your bow. Most compounders miss out on all the neat stuff we do and don't know what their missing.
I would like to see me Hitten'em like Howard. An average every day hunter who is not a pro always makes me feel like I can do that.
Grizzly, Moose, Black Bear, Mountain Lion, etc etc hunts. Whitetails have been done to death, let's see some stuff that isn't out there all over.
Lot of great ideas. I would second the archery 101. I have been at this only about 5 years and in reflection, it took me a long time to figure out what stuff mattered and what didn't. Heck I am sure I am still figuring that out, but nonetheless I am much further along.
I would also add a trouble shooting section to the 101 course. Identify some common problems and then solve them eg. Poor arrow flight, nock fitting problems, brace height adjustments and outcomes, etc..
Good luck.
Realistic hunting scenarios with build-up, from sharpening broadheads to setting blinds/stands, stump shooting, etc. and then hunting.
Also, shooting "everyday" deer, does, small bucks, etc. Small game and hogs, too.
Blood trailing until recovery.
Little or no music.
No re-inactment, all as it happens. Don't let the cameraman be waiting at the deer when the hunter arrives to look surprised when he finds his big buck.

In the kind of places that a lot of these hunting videos are filmed, they probably didn't give that much thought.
There are places where you can just go climb any random tree and see deer every day, and by seeing deer over the years, they set up stands in certain better locations. So if you were to ask them why is the stand right there, the real answer would be - years of seeing a lot of deer right there. No matter what kind of BS feeding bedding theory they might actually say.
I spend time at a couple of camps on places like this every year. I do a little hunting there, but not too much. It is a thousand times easier than hunting in some other places. Last year I walked out to a 12' ladder stand in bluejeans, and a montana rancher's coat (tan w/ white fleece) and some blaze orange, and a tan ball cap. In about 30 minutes I had a doe on the ground. 20 yard shot quartering away - with a rifle. I didn't deer hunt last year - was just trying to help them fill doe tags.
Friendly and Family fun at 3D shoots would be good filler and always entertaining.

I totally agree with Tarponnut!
I get a little disappointed when I see a very good hunting vid and when the hunter is in for the closure they start with some film music from "Jaws" or similar.
When I`m out hunting I don't start to humm "dadadada" when I start drawing my bow, but hey that`s just me :goldtooth:
Margly
There's a reason why Primal Dreams took so long to put out. It's the best I've seen so far. I'd love to see a video of different hunting seasons in a hunter's life though. Maybe one year he goes for elk, another for moose, squirrel, deer, etc. It'd be tough to capture it all though.
I also think it would be cool to see a dvd shot on public ground(since alot of people only hunt this way)or small private land(50 acres or less).
Not all of us can afford to go on big money outfitter hunts, it would be sweet to see a hunting vid that takes this into consideration.
How about a reality show :dunno:
Lot's of good ideas. I would like to see more of the "whole picture" meaning showing things like scounting during the offseason, etc. Like mentioned above, I like hunts that average guys can do. Squirell hunts are great on film! I am still amazed at the number of people who do not hunt squirells with their bows. It's great fun and you don't need alot of money for a lease to do it. Hunt's on public lands are great, since many people must hunt these areas.
I also like to see different tacticts employed for whitetails. Opinions vary on the subject of "deer drives" with bows, but we do it all the time. We cannot shoot running deer, but we still get shots at deer that are at a walk or those that have paused for a second or two. Watching it on film is fun!
Get in shape and give me a call and we'll get some mtn goat footage!!
The WHOLE hunt process, not just all close ups and kill shots. No food plots or southern drawls, no high-5's, ZERO tolerance for mentioning brand names.
Bowyer interviews, yawn......
A kid , his dad, pawpaw and some friends( young and older) setting around a campfire telling stories of the old times.
I enjoy the videos where there is little or no talking while the hunt is on. Maybe a calm voice-over to set the segment up or say where the hunt is taking place. I honestly don't see how all these TV guys ever kill anything while trying to stage whisper to the camera.
I have had some experience with video production. I can't stand segments that add in B-roll (we used to call it BS-roll). No shots where the camera is placed across from the deer and the hunter wanders up and acts suprised to find it. No shot of the arrow flight then 3 angles of the hunter taking the shot. No shots of a down animal without the real footage of the hunter loosing the arrow. No quick cut-aways to "build drama and create suspense" Just a guy, gal or kid trying to hit a target, stump or animal and what it took to get in and out. Pure toned semi-classical or gutiar instrumental for background music. No rock and roll, no techno-crap.
If anyone is excited about "smoking" a deer it better be footage of mealtime. Stands are ok, blinds are ok, ghillie suits would be cool. Small game, turkeys, big game...stumps! Wood arrows, alum. arrows, carbon arrows. No geewhiz mechanical anything. Kill something barefooted and I will give it four stars.
Don't want much.. do I?
OkKeith
Why do hunting shows almost always have annoying loud music to cover up the natural sounds. When that big buck came close last year, maybe if there was some loud annoying music to mess with my head, he would have gotten in under 30 yards so I could have taken a shot, just like a TV hero. They could start by simply getting real, enough with the BS and brain games. I don't listen to hard rock or rockabilly on my way out hunting, it is the last thing I want in my head.
I would like them to explain why they chose their set-ups (bow, arrows, broadheads, clothing, etc.) and the tuning of bows. As for the hunting, I would like it to be more instructional; stalking, ambushing, how to chose hunting areas, and where and how set-up ground blinds would be great. I'm tired of seeing someone sitting in a tree overlooking a trail that goes from a bedding area to a feed field. A deer walks by and the hunter shoots it. The hunter is then excited as to having a rewarding and successful hunt. Hunting videos should be more of the "pursuit of game."
I would like to see something the average hunter could do. Whitetails from the start to finish meaning scouting why a stand is put where ,the shot and bloodtrail. Small game hunting , Turkeys and pigs.Maybe a hunt with a canoe...A group of Buddies camping / hunting.
Maybe an interveiw with some "critter killers" about why they shoot what they do, How they get it tuned, shooting tips from them, hunting tips as well.Blood trailing tips....The average hunter with any weapon I know does`nt do well on a blood trail at all and skills there alone would probably give them 20% more recovered game.RC
I agree PAVAN....I HATE the music. I want to hear the wind blowing, the leaves rustlin....I have an iPod if I want to hear music.
I would like to see scouting and wide-angle of hunting spot with detailed explanation of why stand or blind spot was chosen.
Start to finish hunts would be cool as well. Ground hunts are something I'm interested in.
Off the subject, but I went to BuckMasters here in Montgomery this year and the ONLY trad bow in the whole place was holding a quiver that was for sale....
I like the videos that truly look home-made, just like a guy like me might throw together.
When Bowhunter TV (Prime Media) did a segment on the Black Widow clinics the cameraman told me that camera cost $25,000....you have to ask "where in the world is this going".
Make sure you include all the standards. There's a buck, its a shooter/ He's down, He's down/ That's what I'm talkin about/ It doesn't get any better than this/ That ______ broadhead put the smackdown on him and don't forget There's no ground shrinkage here.
No Music. None. It doesn't belong in the woods.
Hunt from the ground once in awhile.
Only take reasonable shots at the first decent animal within range. You can hunt horns, or you can hunt animals."Trophy" and hunting, don't go together.
No Stupid "High Fives" and giggle fest after the shot. Show some respect for the animal.
Don't blow about this bow, or that Scent, or a special camo pattern, yada, yada
I guess that's why I don't watch them.
IMHO music is fine.
I HATE the redneck nonsense and nephew got a guitar and is forming a rock band garbage.
I want creativity/artistic stuff. Seen pretty poor attempts at it recently on some VS shows- amounting to nothing more than a repeated clumbsy camera movement before focusing on the hosts.
Laughable at best.
Do understand that sponsors pay the bills but IMHO it has gone past ridiculous, what is considered by most in camo to be "entertainment".
Only video I think I've seen worth a hoot in the last 2 yrs is "Full Circle". Not perfect but different enough to be of watchable merit.
The dude running much of the camera was an art dude, so frosty grass, birds etc.......are done nicely, give a nice overall feeling.
Pleasant.
I think that missing in much of video these days (not just in hunting commercials).
FWIW I get rather focused listening to Type O Negative rather loudly on the way to my hunting spots in the dark morning.
Love it.
Can't see heading to the fall woods without "October Rust" playing.
The "death" stuff helps get a little amped too.
I remember talking about this a little bit in camp this past week. It gave me a little time to think about it. I remember the old videos from the late '80's and very early '90's, such as October Whitail's 1 & 2. They all seemed to be instructional. Set up each hunt, each tactic. Tell why you set up where you did, when was the best time to sit that stand, and why. Maybe include early, mid and late seasons, and the differences in tactics. Maybe film a kid taking their first animal with a stickbow, from start to finish. also explaining safety tips.
this may also be stretching it a bit, but, how about the differences in the different parts of the country. If its whitetails, go through the differences in the north east, mid Atlantic, south east, mid west, south and so on.
Good Luck
Yep, no music, please. And, I rather think that a film with heaps of assorted Alaskan tradbowhunting action would be great!
Steve Gorr does it right...! Watch and own Bowhunting Reflections if you can. In my opinion better than PD and that is a bold statement... LOL
Ground hunting using natural blinds and gullies. camping talking about why they used the techneques they chose and hunt preperation
Got some great ideas folks, keep them coming!!
Put in some of the blood trailing, showing the care with which one must take to make sure they find the animal. Guess nothin' is for sure, but I'm sure you get my drift,Big Ed... I don't think there is enough emphasis put on the art of following a blood trail.
I've never bought a hunting video, but if I ever do, I'd like it to follow just 1 or 2 hunts. None of the "28 kill shots" that I've seen advertised. Hap
Simple. Me making a perfect shot on a 6x6 bull elk. :goldtooth:
Families hunting together.
I don't want to see vidoes of you in bib overalls without a shirt on. Just brings back thoughts of the movie Deliverance. :)

Kids and families would be great.
Alot of different activities that you don't see like small game and stump shooting type stuff as filler.
I don't think I can improve on all the sugestions here. I agree with them all. The films that I really like are about the hunt, the whole hunt. From choosing a destination and setting up camp to packing meat and sharing the spoils over a campfire.
If the video has some primadonna not willing to get a little blood or dirt on his custom embroidered sponser shirt, I wont watch!
Many of teh older films are exactly what is being decribed here. Little if any music, the sounds of the wind, bloodtrails, a reason why the blind/stand was placed where it was. etc...
great idea Ed!! im ready to buy the dvd
I wanna see more anger after people miss. Temper tantrums, smashing bows, foaming at the mouth etc!
:biglaugh:
That would be a reality video!
Hey Mike when do you want me to video you?
Hunting, the instructional thing has been done to death
Since I didn't opt for the digi box for my older TV, I watch a LOT of videos. I enjoy most of the Primos stuff...
As for the high fives... if you listen to them describe the situation, I think it's a bit more understandable: hunting hard for 8 days, difficulty getting 2 stands, cameras, gear up a tree, moving frequently, getting busted or just being in the wrong tree...and it finally, finally comes together. I can relate to some of that...where it goes on and on and you're sure you're jinxed and them:BAM! It happens... emotions are real and raw at a moment like that.
I'd rather see some exhuberance than the dead pan stuff of Marlin Perkins in "Wild Kingdom" era with his non-emotive, "The bear is chewing on my foot...this is painful...and dangerous" commentary. :knothead:
It still sometimes challenges me in a new woods, figuring out just what a pinch-point, funnel, edge looks like the "right way."
I know what it means to me, but then I'm never 100% certain. Someone said it before several times... the 'Why?'of a set up. I think many of them say all that stuff, but it's because the "outfitter/guide" told them.."hunt there!" That doesn't help me... :)
I know I've seen one or 2 vids over the years that tried to show the "scounting and picking locations". On film, it sucked. Just can't put it all on tape even w/a wide angle lens... so that is a huge challenge!
There are three main types of videos INSTRUCTIONAL, where your trying to teach someone YOUR method of shooting ( and usualy selling some service pr product with it ) They are done to death and I dont think they are worth the effort .
HUNTING lots of good ideas there > MY self my two sons and most of the guys in my camp,( Bradford County ) hunt from the ground Id love to see more ground hunting that inclodes a lot of small game.
INFORMAL AND FUN TYPE Get to the PA BOW HUNTERS FESTIVAL , DENTON HILL , talk to bowyers there and shooters there interviews and shots of shooting at those type places PA LONG BOW shooters shoot in Early june this year would have been ideal. Lots of diversity in bows and equipment some good old timers to talk to some very interesting shots etc
I would like to see guys try and hunt some of the small states like Jersey and such.
How many of you would want to watch a reality tv style dvd where they follow the hunter through the whole process and in the end he's eating tag soup?
They would probably not sell enough to cover the production costs. It is frustrating when those seasons actually happen to us, I'm not sure if I would really want to pay to watch someone else go through it. I find it more entertaining when it finally comes together and they show or describe how hard it was.
Thats what made Tred Barta's show great!
It's not always the kill that makes the hunt.
I can tell you what I don't want to see:
Acting like an idiot after shooting an animal and yelling stupid things like "I smoked him baby!" and "BBD!". Making a poor shot and then telling everyone on camera that you made a good shot. Explaining the importance of letting small/young bucks walk so they can grow into big bucks and then shooting one at the end of the hunt so you have kill shot footage. Telling people if they wear/use your product you can "forget the wind". Dumping a pail of "C'Mere Deer" on the ground and then announcing you are ready. High fencing showing in the background as you get ready to shoot the big one. Think that about covers it for now!
How about an interview of 3-Rivers VP of Operations T. Williams, she could give a tour of the building, or at least footage of her shooting her longbow on a big game hunt?
I like to see the working man type videos hunting on private and gamelands with does , young bucks , and a big one too if a little lucky . I would like to see homemade treesands , climbing stands , and alot of ground hunting using blinds but mostly homemade brush blinds . Would also enjoy some small game hunting , stump shooting and yes some shooting tips . If someone put together a video with all this I would be first in line to buy one.
Mike
Tiffany Lakoski shooting a longbow or recurve! She can leave Lee at home..........
Pheasant hunting with some friends would be awesome!! HINT,HINT!!! I know someone who has a good young Llwellen Setter and birds!! HINT,HUNT!!! I also know of some guys who would do some shooting too!! Shawn
i can say this Ed tuned my bow and arrow setup to perfection!!!!!
he didnt fool around either he in my opinion was one of the best employees Lancaster Archery Supply ever had in my opinion!!! he knows his stuff
i still appreciate the help he gave me Thanks again Ed!!
I would like to see 3d shoots, stumping, and people shooting a mix of trad bows then talking about how the bows preformed.
