I was wondering if anyone has made their own decoys for either deer, elk, or antelope?
What materials did you use? Have you found any success in it?
-
I am gonna guess that the more "natural" material you use in it the better. Rather than paint I mean.
Also, rather than a full body "perfect" decoy, sometimes a partial that is placed in the woods or weeds where you wouldn't expect to see all of a critter, is all it takes to draw attention away from you.

Google Pete Ward bucky. Some good stuff by Pete.

I just finished this one,"Maybeline".I scaled up a picture using a grid pattern and made it to fit within a 4'x4' piece of 1/4" plywood.I cheated and used an airbrush for some of it but a brush would work fine.I used water based paints. The color of the plywood would have been fine for the tan color but I painted over it.
I used 1/4 rod wired to a front and back leg with tie wire and they extend down 6" below and are pointed,to spike in the ground.
For added stability,as it gets very windy here,I added a swing arm as a third brace that comes out at a 45 degree angle.
The carry hole will also act as a peep hole if I need it.I also plan to make a small set of horns that have a sring closepin to attach if I need a small buck.
I plan too,to make an immature buck head that attaches above her back to simulate one standing behind her.
There is very little cover where I am hunting and the goats haven't started getting rutty yet,but it won't be long. The stituation is,there are about 30 some bucks and only 11-12 does.I expect when the rut kicks in,somebody will be looking for a doe.
I am hunting out of a blind and I am going to first put her near the blind to see if that will bring one near.
Later,it may work to draw one of the bucks that can't get a doe.As a small buck,it may just tick of a buck with does if I can get it close enough to be a threat.I forgot to add,it is painted on both sides so it can also be used as cover to sneak behind without the doe walking backwards.
As a doe with a buck standing behind it,who knows who that will tick off? Will it work? I don't know but if it helps me mess with their heads like they do mine,I will be happy.
Timing is everything with decoys and I'm sure that a homemade one will work as well as a store bought one.
This one weighs about 5 lbs and cost about $35.

Nice work on the decoy Jim

I tried a Bucky like decoy. I do not know if it just luck or really worked. Had some interest from a doe early in the season.
-
that is a great looking decoy JimB!!!
-
I made a whitetail doe like jim's, but cut the legs short and used rebar. I also cut the deer in half, and used hinges, so I could fold it. I'll post pics if I can find them. If not, I'll revamp the deke, and take some more pics.

I've told this story before but it bears telling again..lol Its such a funny story!
I made a doe deer decoy out of cardboard which is just about the right color. I painted up the rest. I thought it looked good.
I placed in out in the middle of an alfalfa field just so the deer would relax and come out earlier instead of hanging back waiting for the boldest one to come onto the field.
I'm sitting in my tree stand on the edge of the field maybe a 100 yards from the decoy when all of a sudden a small pickup comes roaring onto the filed and one youngster jumps out grabs the decoy and throws it into the bed of the truck and they were gone!
I was shocked to say the least...lol it all happened so fast. about the time they were going out of sight I broke out with laughter that was so hard it almost caused me to fall out of the tree...lol
I wish I knew if the decoy worked or not. I never went to the trouble of making another..lol
God bless,Mudd

Here's the before and after pics of the deke I made 10 years ago. It had been sitting outside for quite some time, so it needed some TLC. It actually looks better from a distance. The paint is on both sides. You can see the hinges at the base of the neck. I use a clip to hold it open when set up, and wooden dowels for the legs held in place with pipe holders. In CT, we must cover decoys with orange for transport in and out of woods.
I've had a young doe come nose to nose with it. It must look OK to other deer.

Thanks for all of your posts so far, it gets the wheels turning. My favorite post is from Hawken1911 - that is a classic of the fawn!
